Docked in the Clyde near Glasgow in Scotland, in order to fool German intelligence and the German spies operating in the Clydebank area, an elaborate ruse suggested the great ship was to sail to Southampton to complete her fitting – out. In 1940 on the morning of March 3rd with her Cunard colours painted over with battleship grey, the QE1 quietly left her moorings after receiving her sealed orders to sail directly to New York, maintaining strict radio silence, without even stopping or slowing to drop off the Southampton harbour pilot who had embarked on at Clydebank. Later that day, at the exact time she was due to arrive at Southampton the city was bombed by the Luftwaffe Eluding German U – boats, she arrived in New York six days later as she zigzagged across the Atlantic at an average speed of 26 knots As a troopship, Queen Elizabeth carried more than 750,000 troops, sailing some 500, 000 miles.
