4 key ingredients to look for in a pre-workout

Citrulline

This ingredient is useful during heavy training when you experience fatigue and want to recover between reps or sets. It is an important amino acid for athletes but one that is hard to obtain through diet alone. Your kidneys convert citrulline into arginine and nitric oxide (a key vasodilator), which means it plays an important role in regulating the rate of blood flow to the muscles during exercise. This helps muscles to work hard when under duress so that big muscle pumps can be achieved especially for weightlifters.

Beta-Alanine

Short bursts of high-intensity exercise (between two and eight minutes) increase muscle burn and the onset of fatigue. Beta-Alanine is the building block of carnosine, a molecule that helps buffer acid in muscles. Carnosine is stored in cells and released in response to drops in pH. During intense exercise, carnosine lessens the decline in intracellular pH, allowing for a longer duration of exercise at higher intensity.

Creatine

This ingredient offers several performance benefits. Creatine can produce immediate support for strength and power. This allows athletes to perform more highintensity work in competition and training, resulting in improved performance.

Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)

BCAAs refer to the three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are essential amino acids that can only be obtained from your diet or by supplementation. BCAAs play an important role in the building and repairing of muscles and have been used by bodybuilders for decades but in recent years have become more popular among the wider athletic population.
