HOW TO HELP ADHD KIDS SUCCEED IN SCHOOL
.................................................................................... Kids with ADHD are characterized by hyperactivity, inattention and impulsivity, due to which they tend to have a hard time in school. ADHD children show deficits in achievement and cognitive testing and lower grades compared to the other kids. They have learning difficulties and they need tutoring. They are easily distracted and typically disorganized, for example they forget to take their complete homework to school or to bring assignments home. They tend to procrastinate and manage time poorly, but this does not mean that ADHD kids are doomed to poor school performance, and as a parent you can help your child do well in school. You need to check regularly with your kid’s healthcare provider; a combination of interventions such as behavior therapy, medication and school support is the most effective strategy for treatment. Be compassionate and remember that your kid does not fail a test or forget their homework intentionally; their disorder makes it hard for them to pay attention, concentrate and accomplish assignments. Do not use negative consequences to force your kid to focus; do not give extra homework or take away breaks because simply trying harder does not work due to the ADHD’s symptoms.
