Horse riding is an art and riding to win a horse race comes after a lot of effort, practice, hard work and experience. As with all careers, nothing comes easy. While there aren’t many educational requirements, there are quite a few physical requirements that need to be fulfilled to become a jockey. Also, you need to be someone who loves being around horses, obviously.

eing a jockey can start young as one can enrol in apprentice schools or join a trainer at 16 (in the UK). This is also when someone who has already been involved as an apprentice or has worked under a trainer can start legally participating in races in the UK. Other countries such as Spain allow a rider to start participating in races as an amateur at 14 and turn professional at 16. Getting an apprentice jockey license (for flat races) is the first step in turning professional. To be a professional in jump races you need to get a conditional license. So the journey begins with an interest in horses, once that is established, working in a stable as a stable hand is the first leg of the career. Riding horses every morning for the trainer is what needs to be done. Aligning with the horse, getting to know how to work with them, motivate them and egg them on to run faster. This will train the person aspiring to be a jockey one day into all the nuances and requirements of the role. The most important factor which needs to be discussed is the body weight. Flat race jockeys are smaller in height as compared to their jump race counterparts and weigh in between 49 and 53.5 kilogrammes. Fitness levels are the highest for jockeys because despite weighing so less they have to be able to manoeuvre a horse weighing anywhere from 545 to 635 kilogrammes. Eating right all the time is a big part of this as jockeys are weighed before and after each race in order to ensure the horse carried the right amount of weight for the race. Most jockeys ensure that carbs are a very small part of their diet and focus on eating more of proteins, vegetables and dairy. As jockeys gather more experience in their careers, their weight limit allowance - which is an additional three kilogrammes besides their body weight - that they are allowed to carry on their horses for each race. And as their experience increases this weight limit allowance also reduces making the jockey more sought after.

Feeding your passion Horses are a prized possession for any owner. The fact that their success in a race brings in the goods is a large part of that equation … of course there’s also love and passion for the sport thrown in there in large quantities. Coming back to the feeding part, let’s take a look at what you should put in your horse’s mouth (no pun intended!)
I
t’s not doubting the fact that race horses are the most hardworking, super fit yet most stressed type of horses. They have to start their careers young. Before they are a year old, most horses are saddled and before they turn two, they are galloping under the saddle. By the time they cross two years of age, they are on the race track. This is a drastic change in the quality of life for the young horse. Instead of being able to enjoy the outdoors peacefully, eat grass, run about in clean fresh air, they are confined to a stall in the track with not much ventilation, not much space to move around, and the food changes from sweet grass to dry hay and grains. Add to all of these, the fact that they aren’t even fully grown yet and are being asked to work harder that their young bones and still developing joints can even work. How do these environmental changes in life quality translate on the young foal? Well, it leads to stress, losing weight and other illnesses. So, how can owners really give the best to their horses to ensure their health and happiness? The best combination

of the variety of food is what is recommended. However, this combination is what is hardest to master. Proteins are a very important nutrient that young horses need in larger quantities as compared to diets of more mature horses. A good quality protein helps in the physical development of a young horse as well as complementing the loss of energy it experiences due to the rigors of starting a racing career. Also important are the right minerals such as calcium and phosphorus which are present in hay as well as zinc and copper. All of these minerals and their quantities are available commercially with ratios of grain as per requirements. Having a fit race horse is the key to it also being successful on the racing track. Doing all of the above is the major part in ensuring the capabilities of your steed. However, what’s important to remember is a break from the daily routine and giving your horse time to play around on a grassy patch, run in the sunshine and fresh air and graze as it desires is also something which will boost its physical energy, mental health and overall performance.
