An Arabian heritage, the Arabian horse is to the region a loyal, noble and beautiful animal that has been legendary and very much a part of the Arab heritage and legacy. The horse has been described in history to be able to “fly without wings and conquer without swords�
T
he Arabian horse has a history that goes back to the origins of the entire length and breadth of the area known as Arabia. When you go back to trace the history of the horse, there is no one place in the area where its first sighting or archeological discovery could be placed. It seems inexplicably to belong to the entire region. The type of horse which in equine circles is known as the Arabian horse today is a bit larger than what it used to be back in the day. However besides that the horse remains unchanged. And as is a known fact in these circles the breeding of this horse is pure and remains unchanged throughout the years till date. If we go by the history of the region from the longest time the animal is known to have made kings of men and led their dynasties to victory over nations and beyond. Back in the old day, the bedouins were obsessive and passionate about the purity of the blood of their horses. Through thorough breeding they managed to maintain specific qualities and characteristics of the animal which is clearly distinguishable in the horse till date.

The heritage today and the future The Arabian horse continues to be cherished and bred in the highest standards of purity till date. UAE especially has ensured that the culture of breeding horses that has been a part of their deep rooted traditions is being continued using the latest technology. The sport that is related to the animal such as horse racing and endurance racing is one that is revered and practiced by the elite in the country. In 1992, then UAE President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan gave directive for the formation of the Emirates Equestrian Federation. Hence began the official endurance riding sport in the country. The first event organised by the federation was the modern deseert ride on January 7 the following year. That race saw camels competing with horses. The first 15 positions however were taken by horses in that race. Ever since then the federation has created a strong infrastructure to bolster the sport. Facilities include
three endurance villages in the country, 22 riding clubs as well as other equestrian establishments. The UAE’s top equestrian sport has become endurance riding. This year, the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was crowned champion of the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France when he completed the race first making a total time of eight hours 80 minutes and 20 seconds. His father, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended the crowning ceremony and said, “Ascending to the peak can only be achieved by diligence and good planning and staying at the helm requires determination and persistence for success. UAE riders have become a hard figure in international competitions given their long experience and high ability which enable them to compete in toughest challenges and win profes-
sionally. And this is what we experience in the Emiratis who recognised that the first place is only reserved for hard workers and loyal achievers.’’ At the ceremony the proud father praised his son, Sheikh Hamdan, for astute visions and planning through which he was able to attain his quality skills and aptitude to get the title. This win entitled the country to the gold title. This, incidentally was also won by Sheikh Mohammed in the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship at Euston Park, UK. The title will remain with the UAE until 2016. This truly has established the nation as the world’s endurance champion. Due to the strong backing and support from most of the royal families of the country, endurance horse riding has become one of the premier sports enjoyed by the country’s many sports enthusiasts. And not only that, the sport has been well invested into by its fans. All races that are held are electronically monitored and controlled
and are covered immensely throughout all media channels and the events manage to attract sportspersons from around the world. Let’s take a look briefly at the history of the professional sport and events from the early 1990s when the official federation was established. The rules for National Endurance Riding were formalised in 1995. For the next three years long distance specific start and end point races were held. In 1996, UAE riders attended a race in Kansas, USA for the first time. In 1998, UAE hosted the World Championship which saw a record number of entries prompting an entry into the Guinness Book for 162 participants for the 160 kilometre ride. The Guinness Book record entry was for “The Organiser of the Biggest Equestrian World Endurance Championships 1998”. The UAE has since been elected Chairman of the Endurance Committee of Asian Equestrian Federations.

The ‘locking-rings’ on the underside of the mat ensure optimal anchorage in the sub-base layer. Footing: Finally, a specially mixed footing that meets the requirements of the desired equestrian discipline is installed with lasercontrolled machines.

Oman Royal Cavalry’s Stand The Royal Cavalry’s Exhibition stand shows Oman’s devotion and care to horse and equestrian activities. The design is inspired from the Omani heritage of castles and forts. It contains silver sets of horse ornaments, Omani traditional saddles, pictures of Royal Cavalry’s local and international competitions, and landscapes of Oman. - The Royal Cavalry participated in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant of Queen Elizabeth II which was held at Windsor Castle in 2012. Our riders stunned the audience with their traditional Omani riding.
