what is the life hack pack?

The Youth Reference Group (YRG) at headspace Ipswich is a group of young people aged 16-25 who create projects, events, and review headspace policy to improve mental health literacy and stigma in Ipswich.

They noticed that Ipswich was missing a central resource that contained all relevant information for young people and were determined to create one themselves. The Life Hack Pack contains important service provider numbers, mental health advice, and more! We hope you find it as useful as we have.

budget hacks Use free samples from shop such as Lush, Mecca, etc Ride share apps like Uber will let you book a ride without needing money and let you pay after your ride. The bill will prevent you from booking any further rides until you paid it but after that you’re good to go again. Great for emergency trips home.

To make your fresh herbs last longer, try freezing them in an ice cube tray along with some olive oil. When it’s time to add them to your cooking, simply melt the cube. Also, wash your berries in diluted vinegar to keep them from getting moldy.

Check if you have a community garden near you, some tend to share vegetables and herbs with the community.

Local Libraries are a great place to go for free internet and computer access.

Buy clothes and homeware at the local op shops.

Unsubscribe from mailing lists and avoid shopping centers.

DIY gifts, such as painting terracotta pots, making photo books, Tie Dying shirts, cook homemade goods.

Instead of catching up with friends over food, try opting instead for a picnic, walk through nature, go for a swim or watch a movie at home.

short term strategies 54321 method List 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste 4-7-8 breathing Breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. This slows down your heart rate which assists with anxious feelings Box breathing Breathing in for 4 seconds, holding for 4, exhaling for 4 Scan your body Bit by bit concentrate on how everything feels, from your head to your toes Change temperature Splash your face with water, take a cold shower, or hold an ice cube Intense exercise This could include sprinting, jumping jacks, push ups (good for opening up your chest)

Longer term strategies Journalling This could be a general journal or, if you’re unsure why you’re anxious, keep a journal (or notes in your phone) of when you feel anxious. Where are you? What’s around who? Who’s around you?

How long did it last? What did it feel like? What thoughts did you have?

Regularly undertake tasks that make you feel present These are usually activities that make us focused, and it varies based on what your interests are. It could be certain sports, painting, reading, walking in nature, listening to music, or talking to friends Lower your alcohol and other drug intake Even common drugs such as tabaco and caffiene can contribute to high levels of anxiety in the body. Try to limit caffiene to 1-2 per day and only in the morning, and remember that caffiene is not just in coffee!

3/4 cup water 3 tbsp potato, in small cubes 1 tbsp white onion, chopped 2 tbsp cheddar cheese 1 tbsp bacon, cooked 2 tsp counflour (cornstarch) 1/2 cup vegetable stock 1/4 cup milk salt and pepper

Method

Add potatoes and water to a microwavable mug Microwave for 3-4 minutes or until potatos are tender Once cooked, drain water Stir in bacon, cheese, onions and cornflour Stir in stock and milk then season with salt and pepper Place in microwave for 2-3 minutes or until it thickens with all ingredients cooked thorugh

Preheat oven to 180 degrees for 10 minutes Place tortillas on a lined tray Add 2 tbsp of pizza sauce and spread evenly Add toppings (suggestions include capsicum, ham, onion, tomato, mushrooms etc) Add cheese generously and bake for 10-15 minutes or until cheese is golden

Ingredients

Method

300g macaroni pasta 40g butter 2 tbsp plain flour 2 cups milk 3/4 cup cheese Can of tuna in springwater, drained

Preheat oven to 200 degrees and grase an ovenproof dish.

Cook pasta until tender. Drain and reserve 1/4 cup of cooking liquid. Return pasta to pan.

Melt butter in saucepan. Add flour for 1 minute.

Gradually stir in milk until sauce boils and thickens.

Remove from heat. Add 1/4 cheese and pepper.

Add to pasta with tuna and reserved cooking liquid.

Sprinkle with remaining cheese.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until cheese is melted and golden.
