Summer

Sorbets

This summer, Headmasters Creative Director Zoë Irwin has launched four gorgeous washes for blondes, which are natural and pretty. This delicate colouring technique gives a really gentle tone to blonde hair. Available in First Blush (a soft rose), Violet Sorbet (ash tones),

Snow Sparkle (icy white) or Vanilla Dune (nude beige), these subtle washes are inspired by tones straight off the Chloe runway. From £95. (Colour washes are complimentary when booked with highlights.)

NEWS

HOT TREND

“Iridescence is a huge trend this season,” says Headmasters Creative Director Zoë Irwin. “Update your look instantly by mixing some dry shampoo with MAC Pigment Powders. I use Vanilla for a pretty sparkle for blondes and Pink Bronze for glistening brunettes.” Zoë applies this pretty mixture to hair by using a clean, large make-up brush, and then simply shakes the hair to distribute the soft sparkle evenly.

CATWALK REPORT This season’s hottest colour is diffused and luminous

T

his season, catwalk hair colour is luminous, soft, touchable and sexy. Think natural, healthy shine rather than an extreme gloss. Soft-focus diffused colour swept the boards, rather than any bold or harsh colour statements. We have seen a return to golden blonde at Etro, Sportmax and Versace, which works beautifully with the 1970s trend. Beige blondes and delicate platinums still feature this season at Gucci and Versace, exuding understated glamour and complementing the boudoir pyjama and silk trends. Shiny browns, from medium to dark shades, are sophisticated and subtle at Stella McCartney. They look ravishing with this season’s

shades of violet in flirty silks and carefree jersey. Reds are finely spun and subtle at Givenchy, and look chic and ultra elegant in the season’s transparent chiffons and light organza. “To get this season’s soft-focus shiny colour, try Tissue-Lites for blondes,” says Headmasters Creative Director Zoë Irwin. “We achieve a soft-focus finish by using special tissues to diffuse highlights for natural finish. “To get luminous shine for brunettes, try Heavenly Halo, a technique which combines tints to create a halo-like shine on the hair. To achieve this season’s delicate red opt for ultra-fine highlights.” (Both Tissue-Lites and Heavenly Halo are exclusive to Headmasters salons.)

SECRETS OF T HE STARS Donna Air knows how to pull off a show stopping loo k and her hairdresser, Head masters Creative Director Zoë Irwin, shares her hair success secrets…

P

reparation is really important, according to Zoë: “Whenever I blow-dry Donna’s hair I always use a treatment to help smooth out her naturally curly hair – and it also cuts a handy 15 minutes off the blow-dry time too,” she explains. Zoë created this laidback, glamorous look for Donna for the Elle Style Awards. “First I blowdried Donna’s hair smooth and parted it in the middle, the chicest place to part this season. I then used a medium-barrelled tong to create gentle waves. “To get a cooler wave in Donna’s hair, I wrap random pieces around the barrel of the tong in the middle of the hair, leaving out the ends. Then I spray a liberal dose of shine spray, to make her sparkle on the red carpet,” explains Zoë.

On the

fringe

Go for the cut that’s right for any look...

T

he fringe is a perennial classic. But it is its versatility which has ensured that it has been at the heart of some of the most iconic hairstyles. Think of Audrey Hepburn with her choppy fringe, so reminiscent of the fifties age of innocence, Jane Birkin’s fringe, which oozed sex appeal in the sixties, and Debbie Harry’s fringe, which screamed rebellion in the seventies. “There really is a fringe to suit every face shape, from sweeping fringes to blunt fringes to short, choppy fringes. The choice is endless and they really can be tailored to suit the individual,” says Zoë Irwin, Creative Director at Headmasters. This Season’s Hottest Fringes Zoë has created two gorgeous new fringes for the summer season: the Daisy and the Christie. The Daisy gives you the prettiest summer hair and really lifts long hairstyles, plus it is perfect for heavy fringes that are growing out. It is split in the middle and tapered

around the edges with the cutest little flick. The parting in the middle makes the fringe more youthful. The Christie (inspired by the actress Julie Christie, above) is very similar to the Daisy, but with extended longer pieces around the face, which give it a more vintage edge. The Daisy and the Christie are both available exclusively at Headmasters salons. Celebs who wear it well Nicole Richie reinvented her new svelte self with her much-copied side-swept fringe, which gives her a girly but slightly naughty edge. Kate Moss never puts an ever-sofashionable foot wrong, and her fringe works the seventies vibe well, giving a nod to a glamorous but flawed Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface. Liv Tyler draws attention to those mesmerising brown eyes with a classic fringe. This timeless look makes her look like Hollywood royalty on the red carpet.

Headmasters expert stylists will find the fringe that’s right for you, and once you are a Headmasters client all fringe trims are complimentary! 09

FreeTreatment worth up to £15 for every reader Book a pre-holiday Kérastase ritual and get a post-holiday ritual free!

T

he holiday season can be a difficult time for hair. The combination of sun, sea and sand can be really drying and lead to frazzled locks when you return home. To make sure your hair stays in peak condition all summer long, if you book and pay for a pre-holiday ritual you get a post-holiday ritual absolutely free. Your stylist will analyse your hair and prescribe the Kérastase treatment that will work best for you. Then, all you need to do is relax on Headmasters’ lie-down massage chairs while the Kérastase ritual works on restoring your hair. Then jet off, enjoy your holiday, and return to claim your free postholiday ritual to ensure your hair looks just as gorgeous as your tan! And even if you aren’t heading for the sun this year, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out – treat your hair anyway! The treatments must be taken with another hair service, and the post-holiday appointment must be made before leaving the salon. If you re-book within six weeks, on top of the treatment you’ll also get 10% off your next appointment. To claim the offer, mention it to the receptionist when you book your appointment. For your nearest salon, log on to www.hmhair.co.uk or see the back page. This offer is valid until 7 September 2008.

NO MORE STATIC If hair becomes static or flyaway once blow-dried, apply hairspray to a comb and comb through. Olga from Headmasters Paddington

2

COLD BLAST

For serious shine at the end of washing your hair, blast it with cold water. This will flatten all the follicles and create a really reflective surface on your hair. Justine from Headmasters Guildford

3

EASY MEN’S STYLING Blast your hair with the hairdryer using your hands to stick it up, before applying any product, because it’s easier to get hair to lay flat than to get it to stick up. Then finger it into place. Alex from Headmasters Fulham Broadway

4

SOFT WAVES OVERNIGHT To create a soft sexy wave, apply a styling cream to damp hair. Plait into three plaits www.hmhair.co.uk

and leave to dry overnight. In the morning run your fingers through it, and finish with some serum for a more groomed look. Preetii from Headmasters Putney

5

THE PERFECT FRINGE For a fringe that sits perfectly on your forehead, blow-dry it to the left first, then do it to the right, and then forwards. Jonathan from Headmasters Mayfair

6

STAYING POWER To get this season’s bun to stay in place all day, spray your pins with hair spray before putting them in your hair. Then weave them in and out of your hair in a sewing motion to fix them in tight. Laura from Headmasters Wimbledon Broadway

Your definitive guide to th

T

he crop is the ultimate statement haircut. It can be empowering and sexy or and rebellious. It has an atic dram amazing ability to propel the wearer into the limelight, for example, who had heard of Agyness Deyn before her platinum crop? Because of its attention-grabbing capacity, the crop has seen a recent red carpet revival, as seen on Katie Holmes, Liberty Ross, Erin O’Connor and Sarah Harding. A crop really is a life-changing cut, so if you are brave enough to take the chop it could be the start of something very exciting… Find your perfect crop Zoë Irwin, Creative Director at Headmasters, says: “Crops tend to work best on people with small elfin faces, and those who are confident with all their features.” To find the perfect crop for you, think about your lifestyle and what www.hmhair.co.uk

you like to wear. If you dress simply but classically, and if in your job you need to be smart at all times, then you should try a super-chic crop like Katie Holmes or Erin O’Connor. However if you are an edgy dresser and your dress code at work is more relaxed try something a little racier like Agyness Deyn’s or Sarah Harding’s sharp crops.

Colour Perfection Colour is really important with a crop. Zoë Irwin says: “Bold colours work best for a head-turning effect. Think platinum blonde and deep shades of brunette and red. For a softer effect, a delicate pastel wash over blonde can give an ethereal effect to an elfin crop.” The Perfect Finish A crop needs definition and texture to finish. Our favourite crop boosting products are:

HAIR BLAHFOCUS BLAH

We Love... Men’s Hair It’s time for men to head to the salon and try out something new

W

hy do some men have good hair and the rest don’t necessarily have bad hair, but it isn’t sexy or touchable? Ask a woman how she wants her hair to look and guaranteed she will be able to describe her perfect hair; she will probably throw in a few celeb names too like Jennifer Aniston, Cat Deeley, or for the more adventurous, Agyness Deyn. But ask a man and you’ll get a very different response, at best an embarrassed silence

www.hmhair.co.uk

and at worst an incoherent mumble followed by a swift conversation change. We have passed the age of the metrosexual man which so many failed to relate to, but some men still can’t talk about how they want their hair to look. So many shy away from the salon and prefer to head for the barbers instead, where they wait in turn and get the

*

same hair cut as the three people ahead of them and everyone else lined up behind. However once converted to the salon experience men very rarely turn back to the lottery of the barber’s queue. Salons are now genuinely unisex places where men can relax with a beer – which might also help them describe how they really want their hair to look!

You Asked

Q

I want to grow my hair but I have noticed that I am starting to get split ends – is there anything I can do? Carla, Kensington Unfortunately, once the hair shaft has split there is no way you can mend it, and it needs to be cut off. The best way to grow your hair long and keep it healthy is to still visit the salon every two to three months for a little trim, in order to keep the ends neat. Also, it helps if you use good quality haircare products, such as the Paul Mitchell Super Strong Daily Shampoo and Conditioner. Darren Hau, Headmasters Artistic Team

Hair problems solved by our experts

Q A

I love my hair, but only two days after I wash it. On the day that I wash it, I find it difficult to control and frizzy. What can I do? Lily, Brighton This is a really common issue that clients often come to me with. Your shampoo is too cleansing for your hair type and you need to use a more moisturising shampoo. I recommend Kérastase Bain Satin shampoo and Kérastase Lait Vital conditioner. Team them with a good conditioning masque once a week, like Kérastase Masque Intense, and you’ll find that your hair will be supple and smooth on the first day you wash it. Hugo Ratzel, Headmasters Brighton

Q

I would love to go blonder but I am worried about the roots and the commitment to colouring every six to eight weeks. What do you advise? Kate, Islington Why not try baliage? This is a subtle colouring technique where your colourist will paint on the colour where the sun would naturally highlight your hair, so you will look like you have spent a summer in the sunshine rather than an afternoon in the salon! Micro highlights are also a good option for you. This is where the colourist highlights your hair in very fine sections. It gives a very natural result which doesn’t demand a lot of upkeep.
