his issue is all about planning. I love a bit of planning, a scribbled list here, a pinterest board there & more than a couple of calendars on my iPhone! Sometimes planning is essential, for example, a quick Pinterest board or a couple of magazine tears illustrating the exact shade of blonde, red, or brunette you want speaks volumes to your colourist. And a little forward gift planning takes the pain out of shopping & means you can get a little more for a little less. Check out our gift guide on page 8. Pull out & keep our masterclass on page 16 so the next time your hair isn’t doing what it’s supposed to you have a quick fix at hand. (I tack them onto the inside of my wardrobe door – making them easy to inspire in a hurry!) Plus there is nothing like having a holiday in the diary to look forward to. Many women dream of going short but worry about the day to day versatility, staying feminine & the salon upkeep

The Upkeep
On a daily basis, you need to do much less to a good short cut as its shape is cut into it therefore you need less styling to create a flattering shape. The maintenance really comes in with regular appointments with your stylist every 4-6 weeks (depending on how fast your hair grows) to avoid the mushroom effect.
The Colour
Colour can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a short cut. It can make it more dramatic, a pixie cut in a deep dark brown can be showstopping but equally highlights can create light around the face and feminise a cut. If you already have colour, you will be used to regular salon appointments too, so a little trim at the end of your colour appointment to maintain your shape should be easy to fit into your beauty routine.

“The best place to keep length is the fringe & the crown. The fringe will frame & flatter the face, length at the crown will give the cut shape. For ultimate versatility go for a transient cut – it gives you the soft texture of short layers blended with a longer side fringe to give you the option of creating different styles. Don’t automatically discount an undercut, it can work wonders for thick hair, they can be edgy & cool but we can also cut them invisibly & they just help to keep the shape of the hair slimmer!”

The Cut
Bring in pictures from magazines or create a Pinterest board of your favourite short cuts. Try to be a little flexible as this will allow your stylist to tailor the cut to suit your features. Speak to your salon about who specialises in short styles. Stylists love talking hair & lots of them will have short hair cut by other stylists as well. If you like it, ask who did it & book in with them. If you are going for a major change make sure you tell the receptionist so they can make sure you have a longer consultation time, or even book in separately for a consultation first, before you take the plunge!

he perfect blow-dry will carry you through any occasion, once learnt it will be one of the best weapons in your beauty armoury. You can build on it and give it seasonal tweaks but the basics stay the same. 1) Prep hair with L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art volume lift & L’Oréal Professionnel tecni.art pli and blow-dry using a ghd paddle brush. 2) Split the hair into six large sections one at the crown, on at the front, two at the back and two on either side. 3) Taking the section at the crown, separate into two and lightly backcomb the piece at the back leaving the front free and place over the top of the backcombed piece. Repeat this on all six large sections. 4) Taking a tong, wrap sections of hair around it then roll up and pin to the head, repeat this all over and leave to cool.
