TRENDWATCH We go backstage with Headmasters’ Zoë Irwin to find out which hair trends will be making the leap from the catwalk to the salon...

As seen at Gucci SS’07

THE Roller Pony THIS PONY is really dressy, it’s perfect for the office or equally cocktails. Wash hair as normal and use a volumising mousse like Kérastase Volumactive. Blowdry your hair, using a round bristle brush for volume, and then sweep into a ponytail at the crown. Wrap the ponytail around a Velcro roller and heat it using your hairdryer, then spray with L’Oréal Techni Art Air Fix. Wait until it cools, then gently L’Oréal Techni remove Art Air Fix the roller. 06

As seen at Aquascutum SS’07

THE Wave THIS WAVE is clean, polished and city cool. It looks chic with structured clothes and complements eveningwear too. Blow-dry your hair smooth. Tong in small sections with large or medium tongs, working from the earKérastase Laque level down and Double Force winding the sections of hair in one direction. Leave to cool, then brush through with a Mason Pearson brush. Spray with Kérastase Laque Double Force.

As seen at Fendi SS’07

THE NEW straight UNLIKE THE DRIED out locks of straightener addicts seen a few seasons ago, the new straight is glossy and sleek, which means hair needs to be in peak condition (try insalon treatments, they are more effective than the at-home versions). Wash hair as normal and use a smoothing milk like Kérastase Lait Nutri Sculpt. Blow-dry using a large Kérastase Verni bristle brush, then Nutri Sculpt spray run briefly through with ceramic straighteners. Part dead centre, and use Kérastase Verni Nutri Sculpt spray for a glossy finish.

THE Undone Bun BUNS ARE a really key look this season – you want them to look effortless Paul Mitchell and casual. However, Hold Me Tight hair still needs to be clean, shiny and in great condition for this look to work – it’s not an excuse

to tie back dirty hair. Part hair deeply at the side and sweep into a low ponytail. Then wrap the pony around the elastic and pin into place. Allow a few loose pieces to fall out and spray into place using a flexible hairspray like Paul Mitchell Hold Me Tight.

THE Slick Pony THIS PONY is perfect for sunny summer days on the beach. Use L’Oréal Techni Art Fix Move to achieve a wet look in your hair, then sweep up into a ponytail at the crown. Use a fine comb or a fine bristle brush to minimise comb lines, and secure with a bungee band. Quick and easy, bringing you bang on trend fast.

RUNWAY TO REALITY

Zoë Irwin and her elite session team work backstage each season, creating the hottest hair on the runway. The team then teach every stylist at Headmasters how to achieve these catwalk styles, so they can bring the looks straight to you in the salon. It’s your fast track to gorgeous fashionista hair. A spritz of lemon juice will lighten your hair False A “spritz or squirt, is simply not enough to do anything visible, although it is true that with large amounts of lemon juice and exposure to the sun you may get a mild lightening effect. This is similar to what happens during long holidays in the sun, and is due to the natural oxidising of colour. If you want to lighten your hair, speak to your hairdresser.

CELEBINSIDER

Lisa Snowdon talks hair tales With her glossy locks and to-die-for figure, Lisa Snowdon oozes vitality and lust for life. The model, presenter and Headmasters regular reveals her beauty secrets to her hairdresser Zoë Irwin…

Q: Lisa you always manage to look so effortless, what’s your beauty philosophy? A: Try and keep positive and happy even if you are tired or stressed. Stick to a simple beauty regime with products that smell good to you and

that will create a sense of wellbeing and happiness when you use them. Always wear sunscreen everyday and eat a good healthy balanced diet. Q: I know you have to travel a lot for your job, how do www.hmhair.co.uk

CELEBINSIDER you step off a plane and look awake and gorgeous even when you feel jet lagged? A: I always take my makeup off if it’s a long flight and apply a really good moisturiser like Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream. I also drink loads and loads of water with lemon. You find you are up and down a bit to the bathroom, but when you arrive you look and feel more hydrated. Also a fabulous pair of sunglasses is a must! Q: Which make-up items do you swear by? A: I love Armani bases and I use a brush to apply them. I also use Nars concealer in ginger, Nars powder and Nars eyeliner. Christian Dior Diorshow mascara, Bobby Brown eyelash curlers, Shu Uemera eyebrow liner and Mac Dollymix blush are also some of my favourite things. Q: Do you have any unconventional beauty secrets you can share with us? A: I use conditioner as shaving foam and toothpaste for zits! Q: Are you always good and take your make-up off before going to bed? A: Yes, I am really good at doing that, even if it’s been a crazy late night. I feel so much better when I’ve washed my face and done the whole beauty regime. I am a total beauty junkie and I love all my products, even at 2.30am! www.hmhair.co.uk

Q: Who is your hair icon? A: I think Gisele has amazing hair and Salma Hayek has gorgeous glossy dark tresses.

your whole body – your legs and arms feel more toned, which is what we all want this time of year!

Q: Must-have hair products? A: I really love Kérastase products and depending on what condition my hair is in at the time I change my regime. At the moment I’m using Bain de Force shampoo, Nutridéfense Masque and to style I use Volumactive Mousse on wet hair to give it a little body. I finish with Kérastase Vernis Nutri-Sculpt to smooth off the ends.

Q: What was your favourite summer look at the shows? A: I’m loving natural, tousled hair right now, so the Matthew Williamson show was my ideal look of the summer – sexy, wash-and-go kind of hair.

Q: How do you maintain that body? A: Well, I recently started running – it makes me feel really good. Plus it works

Q: Are you a gloss-and-go girl when you’re not working or do you prefer to be ready just in case? A: I do a basic make-up pretty much most days and also have my make-up bag with me all the time just in case, ready to do a quick touch up or an evening look.

Lisa’s advice on how to get the best from your stylist… • Have a consultation – I think it’s always good to have a consultation to establish a bond between you and your stylist. You should feel relaxed with them and be able to talk with ease. Be honest if you don’t like the sound of or understand exactly what they are suggesting to you, otherwise you could regret it later • Be organised – If you plan your next appointment while you are at the salon you can keep

your style and colour in top condition, and it also means you get an appointment with your favourite stylist every time • Consider maintenance – If you are a low-maintenance kind of girl keep it simple and go for a natural colour and cut, so it’s easy to style • Get your home care right – Professional advice can help get your hair in peak condition so it feels good every day Lisa will be hosting the new series of Britain’s Next Top Model on LIVING this summer

HAIR BLAHFOCUS BLAH

We Love Long Hair I

The ultimate long hair masterclass

f you treat it well long hair can be luscious, beautiful and feminine. However, if it’s ignored it can become lifeless, untamed and lacking in style. Zoë Irwin shares her tips to achieving gorgeous supermodel-worthy tresses… Keep seeing your stylist… It can be tempting when trying to grow your hair to avoid your stylist at all costs, and this is the most common mistake of all. To keep long hair healthy it still needs regular trims. If you have a small trim every eight weeks you can avoid the pain of having to get a larger amount cut off when inevitably splitends start to appear. Don’t fight nature… There is no fast-track route to long hair – most people’s hair grows about ½ an inch per month but this can vary.

www.hmhair.co.uk

Make sure your diet contains B vitamins and protein-rich foods to maximise your growing potential each month. Everyone has a preprogrammed ultimate length that their hair can grow to, so you need to recognise when you have reached it and then take loving care of it.

Stay sexy, sophisticated and stylish… Successful long hair has movement and shape, therefore allow your stylist to cut in some soft layers to help you achieve this.

*

Invest in the lifespan of your hair… The biggest enemy of long hair is breakage, but there are high-tech products on the market specially formulated to fight it. One of the most recent super products is Kérastase Ciment Thermique, which is a leave-in, strengthening treatment activated by heat, perfect for blow-dries. Use protein-rich shampoos and conditioners, like Kérastase Bain de Force to help repair any damage in your hair’s structure.

Book now!

Headmasters offer House Train Your Hair classes, aimed at teaching you how to do a professional blow-dry, the hottest ponytail and the easiest up-do. Treat you and your locks to an in-salon treatment (they are much stronger than the home versions) and an en-vogue blow-dry to bring your long hair bang on trend. Try Headmasters best-selling LA Blo Out for a relaxed Californian glamour, that’s perfect for the summer. To book, call 08700 841 400 or visit your local salon (see back page).

Hair problems solved by our experts PERSONALTRAINER

I have long hair, which when I style it at home never looks as good as when I have it blow-dried in the salon. I lead a busy life and really need to be able to style it myself sometimes. Any tips? Lucy, from Wimbledon The reason a salon blow-dry looks better is that your stylist is fully trained and does about eight blow-dries a day, and practise really does make perfect. I recommend to my long-haired clients to have a blow-dry in the salon once a week and this will usually see them through another three or four days. I also suggest they book in for ‘House Train Your Hair’ which is a one-to-one, 45-minute lesson with one of our elite session-team stylists teaching you how to style your own hair, using your own tools. Laura, Manager, Headmasters Wimbledon Broadway

COLOUR CLARITY

I like the idea of having colour in my hair, but I am worried I won’t like it, or the maintainence will be too much. What should I do? Hannah, from Islington

Why not go for a natural finish to see whether you like it, before trying something more dramatic? Headmasters offer a colour treatment called ‘Summer Lites’, which gives a natural, shiny, finish. Or, opt for a ‘Glossing’ – a gentle colour treatment, which acts like a glossy seal on your hair. It’s semi-permanent so no need to worry about re-growth. Amanda, Colour Degree Specialist, Headmasters Mayfair

SUNSOLUTIONS

Every summer when I return from holiday, I spend the next two months trying to get my hair back into the condition it was in before I left. How can I enjoy my holiday and still have healthy hair? Suzie, from Weybridge The combination of sun, sea and sand can do serious damage to hair. Have a mini-trim before you leave to get rid of any split-ends as they will only get worse and fracture further. Then invest in some serious sun protection for your hair. I recommend the Kérastase Soleil range, it has UVA & B protection and will get rid of stubborn chlorine and sea salt, or Paul Mitchell Shampoo 3 for serious water babies. Once you get home, have an in-salon treatment like a moisture replenishing Kérastase Ritual to give your hair the extra moisture boost it needs. Enzo, Stylist, Headmasters Weybridge
