For years Tom Shutes has been quietly working behind the scenes on his budding vision for a rejuvenated Grimsby.

Now the philanthropist and businessman is ready to reveal all about his plans - starting with Grimsby Town FC. For the first time, your Grimsby Telegraph can reveal the first-look images of Mr Shutes’ ambitions for the beloved football

club and his desire to “Bring the Mariners’ Home” by building a new stadium in their spiritual heartland of the town’s iconic fish docks.

The images, produced by London-based architects Waugh Thistleton, show a new 14,000-capacity stadium constructed in the shape of a ship and in the view of Grimby’s iconic dock tower, in a nod to the town’s proud fishing’s legacy.

Alongside the stadium sits the derelict, grade II-listed ice factory which Mr Shutes also hopes to develop as part of the plans.

Mr Shutes has been a prominent but lowprofile figure in the regeneration of Grimsby, playing a key role in the £90m Town Deal which promises to revive huge swathes of abandoned industrial areas in the town.

He had been engaged in talks with the football club’s majority shareholder, John Fenty, over a possible takeover for a number of months, but they came to a standstill when Mr Fenty announced in February that he was “calling time” on the sale.

Mr Fenty claimed he had pulled the plug on the sale because there remained “unresolved questions” over Mr Shutes’ bid. “The facts of the matter are there was an agreement in place, and as of last September they ran out,” he said at the time.

“If actually he [Mr Shutes] could have transacted, he would have done during that time, but couldn’t.”

But in an exclusive interview with the Grimsby Telegraph, Mr Shutes rejects suggestions the money was not there and speaks of the plans he has drawn up with Grimsby born-and-bred Jason Stockwood who has held leadership roles at lastminute. com and Match.com - and Andrew Pettit, of the famed family of Grimsby butchers.

“For what must be about two years, I have agreed various different versions of a takeover, in good faith - all of which were, in the end, rejected, “ Mr Shutes told the Grimsby Telegraph.

“The three of us got together and we put a cash offer on the table - it was a cash offer for the shareholder interest in the club, for several other of the largest shareholders, and a repayment in full from cash of all the outstanding debt.”

of credit” for “saving the club and stabilising things financially”.

He said: “We genuinely wish them nothing but the best so what we’ve said is ... you know who we are, you know where we are; if you’d like to talk at some future date, we’re really happy to engage.

“And in the meantime, what we’re going to focus on and concentrate on is a fantastic real estate proposition for a new community stadium based in the docks.”

Since the talks collapsed, plans to relocate the stadium to Freeman Street have gathered pace, with the Freemen of Grimsby even releasing their own images of how the new stadium could look.

Mr Fenty has himself admitted that the current plan to relocate to the East Marsh could take three to five years to deliver,

while a new stadium alone would cost in excess of £20 million to develop..

But while the relocation to Freeman Street has been given the thumbs up by the Grimsby Town Board as its preferred site, Mr Shutes has reservations. In order to create space for the stadium, he says up to 100 homes will need to be demolished.

“First of all, nobody has to sell their home,” he said. “But even if you could get 100 homes, or 100 households, and you’re willing to pay that much to do it, you’re still going to end up with a stadium which is slap bang in the middle of a very densely packed residential area.

“I think the residents of the area would love to see something happen with what is currently a wasteland area, and it would be great to see a good scheme go in there.

But the enthusiasm for just doing something is not the same thing as having the right long-term plan.”

Mr Shutes said that in order for the stadium to be good value for money, it would need to be able to host a number of events, such as the Women’s League, FA Youth cup competitions and concerts in the summertime during the off-season.

“In terms of the community resource, you’re really going to stretch the tolerance of the residents of the area, because if it’s being used two or three days a week, that’s quite a big impact on a residential community,” he said.

For now, Mr Shutes accepts that the ball lies in Mr Fenty’s court.

In February he announced he was taking a step back from the running of Town with Philip Day now the new figurehead to focus on his role as the deputy leader of North East Lincolnshire Council.

He said he would ‘continue to support the club financially from afar.’

However, there is little doubt Mr Fenty remains the key player around which any sale or stadium plans would revolve.

In the meantime, Mr Shutes says he will continue to flesh out his plans for a stadium to revitalise the docks.

“We’ve simply said to the club, look, we understand that you know you’re not ready to transact and that’s no problem at all, we respect that.

“We want to get on with the development of the plans for a stadium project and we would be happy to engage with the club at a later date.

“And we’re going to go ahead with our plan, working closely with the Association of British Ports and the council in order to be able to bring these plans forward.”

Bob Swindlehurst is finally back home in Grimsby with his loving wife, Eileen

A great-grandad told nurses ‘you shouldn’t be clapping for me, I should be clapping for you’ as he was leaving hospital after beating coronavirus.

Robert ‘Bob’ Swindlehurst, 85, from Grimsby, started feeling unwell at the beginning of April, staying inside just in case he had Covid-19.

His condition worsened as the week went on, however, and he was taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital on April 6, where he tested positive for the coronavirus.

He was also diagnosed with pneumonia, and delirium, and started a long and difficult battle in hospital.

Bob, who has two children, five grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren, was left barely able to speak to family members over the phone.

He was even fitted with a CPAP mask, which pushes air into the lungs to keep airways open, and family feared the worst as his wife, Eileen, was asked to sign a Do Not Resuscitate order, as doctors felt it would do more damage than help if they were to try.

But Bob kept fighting and was removed from the CPAP mask on April 25, starting a gradual recov-

“He is so grateful for the job the NHS have done, they really are heroes. They took his calls for him, gave him messages from family, and were just always there for him and making sure he was okay.

“When he was leaving, he told them “You shouldn’t be clapping for me, I should be clapping for you”.

“He’s so happy now, and when family keep coming down to see him from a distance, he keeps crying because he’s just missed them so much.”

Five more die as lockdown end looms Another five people have died in hospital in northern Lincolnshire after testing positive for coronavirus.

A total of 77 people have now died at hospitals run by the trust during the pandemic – including Grimsby’s Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital.

A further eight have died in care homes – one of those in North East Lincolnshire and the others in North Lincolnshire.

Another three cases have also

been confirmed in North Lincolnshire, taking the total for North and North East Lincolnshire to 546.

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust will not break the 77 deaths at its sites down by hospital. Three of the latest deaths happened on Sunday, said NHS England.

The organisation said yesterday a further 331 people, who tested positive for the coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed

reported deaths in hospitals in England to 22,049.

Britain’s overall toll is much higher than reported as new figures show that just under 33,000 deaths involving Covid-19 have now been registered across the UK, the highest total in Europe and the second highest in the world behind only the US. The latest figures were announced after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said lockdown measures will start to be lifted on Monday “if we possibly can”.

The UK lockdown is not stopping the people of Grimsby and Cleethorpes from commemorating VE Day. VE Day, otherwise known as Victory in Europe Day, marks the end of World War Two in Europe in 1945.

To mark 75 years since the end of the war, the celebrations were due to take place over a three-day weekend from May 8 to May 10, with May Day Bank Holiday moved to Friday.

There were due to be celebrations across Grimsby and Cleethorpes starting tomorrow, but these have been either cancelled or postponed in light of the Covid-19 crisis.

However, many do not want the occasion to pass without recognition and have instead changed their ways of celebration to suit the Government’s measures – staying at home and social distancing.

In Barton upon Humber and Great Coates, people have been decorating the streets with poppies and messages to those who lost their lives in conflicts.

Residents in Great Coates will be taking part in a two minutes silence at 11am on Friday, tea and scones at 4pm, and a village sing-song at 9pm.

Chairman of Great Coates in Bloom, Mike Stewart, said: “The village council have organised a small thing for the residents. It is to bring the community back together in light of recent events.”

The village will be abiding by social distancing measures throughout the day.

In other parts of Grimsby and Cleethorpes, people have been setting out plans for ‘front garden parties’, with people dancing in their driveways or enjoying afternoon tea on their lawns.

A Grimsby mother of-six is counting the cost of a hit and run driver who crashed in to two cars on Alexandra Road and fled.

Police were on the scene within minutes and an officer was assaulted as the runaway driver was arrested.

Emergency services were called when a red Fiat collided with two parked cars as it was driven along Alexandra Road, Grimsby towards Frederick Ward Way at around 2.30am on Wednesday.

Joanne Whitton’s purple Citroen Picasso was parked outside her home next to a green Volkswagen Golf.

The Fiat driver ploughed into the two parked cars causing extensive damage.

Joanne Whitton’s car was shunted into a neighbour’s car.

Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue crews arrived within minutes thanks to a neighbour who heard the crash and alerted emergency services.

Police chased the runaway driver and arrested him on Corporation Road. An officer was injured during the arrest, a police spokeswoman said.

Joanne told the Grimsby Telegraph: “The first I realised something was wrong was when the police knocked on my door. The police and fire brigade were excellent. They stayed with me because I was in shock.”

She added: “They said the driver was under the influence of something. How anyone got in that state when we are in lockdown and the pubs are closed, I don’t know. Why would they be out at that time of the morning anyway? “

The single parent of six children said: “Luckily we did our shopping on Tuesday so I am stocked up but it means I won’t be able to get shopping in the car. It is a write-off.

“I don’t normally park in the street. I usually park in South Parade. But the impact pushed my car into the neighbour’s car. When mine was getting towed away it dragged his car. Both the airbags on the Fiat went off.”

Joanne said: “We are really grateful to my neighbour who called the police . They were here within minutes. It was an excellent response They are keeping me informed. They stayed with me because I was in shock and the fire crews disconnected the car batteries. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt.

“It is supposed to be a 20mph limit down here but no one pays any attention to that and ignore that. “ A Humberside Police spokeswoman said: “A 41-year old man was arrested on Corporation Road in Grimsby following a road traffic collision on Alexandra Road reported at 2.33am on Wednesday.

“The driver of a red Fiat Punto left the scene after it collided with other parked vehicles on Alexandra Road. The 41-year-old has been arrested in connection with this incident and also on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. He remains in police custody at this time.

“Anyone who witnessed the collision who has not spoken to police is asked to call us on 101 quoting log number 39 of May 6.”

A Cleethorpes charity shop is urging people to hang on to their donations after piles of items were left outside while the store is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pictures have been shared with the Telegraph of clothes and shoes in the doorways of the British Red Cross and British Heart Foundation stores in St Peter’s Avenue.

Though the stores “always appreciate your kind donations”, charity shops are not permitted to open during the current Covid-19 lockdown and staff are therefore not present or allowed to touch anything left outside meaning goods are liable to be stolen or ruined.

A member of staff at the Cleethorpes British Red Cross store said: “We keep getting lots of people’s unwanted items being left outside our shop while it’s closed.

“Although we always appreciate your kind donations, could people please keep hold of them until the current pandemic and subsequent lockdown are over.

“We and many other charity shops are getting reports of bags being piled high outside our doors and donation bins despite signs on all of them asking for this not to happen.

“We are not allowed to touch these donations for the foreseeable and most are unfortunately being stolen or ruined whilst outside. You could also be fined for fly-tipping.”

VIRUS TO PLAY ROLE IN SOAP BUT WILL NOT ‘DOMINATE’ IT

Coronavirus will feature in future episodes of Coronation Street but will not “dominate” the soap’s storylines, its producer has confirmed.

The programme will reflect the real world by showing its characters following hand-washing protocol, while Weatherfield’s restaurants will shift to offering food deliveries.

ITV has halted production on Coronation Street and Emmerdale and reduced its transmission of both soaps to make the episodes which have already been recorded last longer.

Iain MacLeod said the show appealed to viewers because it “reflects modern Britain” and that, when filming restarted, ignoring the pandemic onscreen would turn Coronation Street into “a parallel fantasy land”.

“We took the view that it has to exist in our world,” he said.

“However, I am also aware that people tune into Coronation Street for escapism, to some degree, and to see drama and stories that they would never normally experience in their own lives, and stuff they would normally never see in their own living rooms played out on screen.

“While the virus will exist in Coronation Street, we were also keen that it wouldn’t dominate every single story and every single scene. If your lives are anything like mine, certainly coronavirus is pretty much the only topic of con-

versation in my house, but people wouldn’t want to tune into Coronation Street and see every scene was people talking about coronavirus.

“It will be there. You will be able to see evidence of it in the way people behave – hand-washing protocols and things like that.

“The way our businesses are run will be tweaked to do more takeaways and the like, as food outlets are doing in the real world.

“But we will still continue telling the same brilliant, dramatic stories with the healthy dollop of comedy that we always do, because to do otherwise would be, again, to turn the show into something the viewers don’t recognise.”

MacLeod said the show would continue to air “hard-hitting” storylines, and not move towards showing only lighthearted content.

“People want to watch drama and they want to watch the same hard-hitting stories that Corrie does so well. They don’t want suddenly to be watching a different programme,” he said.

A recent episode saw Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King, inset) stab her husband Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) following months of coercive control and abuse.

MacLeod said fans should expect Geoff to receive “comeuppance” for his coercive behaviour before the end of the year, despite the changed schedules due to the lockdown.

Big Weekend 2020 goes virtual Sam Smith, Biffy Clyro, Rita Ora and Young T & Bugsey are among the acts who will perform remotely for a virtual version of the Radio 1’s Big Weekend music festival.

The BBC announced that more than 50 new live sets will be recorded for the festival by artists from their own homes.

The physical event was due to take place in Dundee later this month, but was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A band statement from Biffy Clyro said: “As much as we’d love to be performing live on stage, this will

be a whole new experience for us and we cannot wait.”

The virtual festival will take place between May 22 and 24 and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 1.

In addition to the newly recorded live sets, about 50 previous performances from the festival will be played, including Katy Perry’s set in Glasgow and Miley Cyrus’ performance in Middlesbrough.

Aled Haydn Jones, head of programmes for BBC Radio 1, said that the festival is an opportunity “for us to give something back to our listeners”.

Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown has made a £15,000 donation to NHS staff on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.

The actress, above, gave £5,000 each to Bournemouth Hospital Charity, Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal and Southampton Hospitals Charity.

The money will go towards supporting workers throughout the health crisis.

Brown, 16, who has lived with her family in Bournemouth for four years, said: “Britain’s NHS workers – and all carers – are an inspiration to us all and are the nation’s heroes.

“I am in awe of every one of them and just wanted to thank those risking their lives.”

Gomez hosts cooking show Selena Gomez is to star in a new cooking programme which will see her share recipes while stuck at home in quarantine.

Each episode of the series, which will air on the HBO Max streaming service, will see Gomez joined by a different chef.

Vision for stadium is a breathtaking sight The vision revealed today by Tom Shutes for a new Grimsby Town stadium at the heart of the derelict docks is impressive.

With a design inspired by the town’s maritime heritage and views over the iconic Dock Tower it would be a breathtaking sight.

We have had plenty of artist’s impressions over the years for new stadiums in Grimsby.

Yet the Mariners remain at Blundell Park, their home for more than 100 years.

What makes this plan more appealing is that in Tom Shutes we appear to have someone determined to move beyond architects’ drawings and into concrete and steel.

He wants to buy Town and says the cash and backers are in place.

And he says despite initial knockbacks from majority shareholder John Fenty, he remains interested.

The ball, he says, is now in the court of Mr Fenty, who is also deputy leader of the council.

What is vitally important is that all the key players here; Mr Fenty, Mr Shutes, the club, the council and those involved in the Greater Grimsby Town regeneration deal, place the best interests of the club, the supporters and the broader community at the heart of this conversation.

reat Britain would only become Little Britain if it was a small part of a Federal Europe.

If Remain had won the 2016 referendum we would have to accept free movement of people. Last year the number of migrants that came to the UK was 240,000.

If 50 per cent worked in the NHS, then 100 per cent would become customers of the NHS. After Brexit we will have the points system; we can then choose the people our nation needs for the NHS.

Nothing was achieved by parliament in the years of delay and it took a general election to return democracy to our nation.

I was pleased that W Clarke made a reference to the Second World War. On Friday we will be able to pay are respects and gratitude to the “Golden Generation” that with Commonwealth and American allied forces freed the whole of Europe from fascism.

Fitties residents are rather hypocritical about their visitors IS IT not hypocritical of Fitties residents to complain about visitors when the site is made up of holiday homes and not residential homes?

It is closed annually tor two months.

As a key worker I pass the Fitties site on my way home from work and regularly stop there for my daily exercise. There are numerous public footways across both the Fitties and

Thorpe park which can be accessed.

I have noticed the site itself over the Easter weekend and weeks following have become increasingly busier with an influx of more residents and their vehicles. So by traveling to their second homes from Yorkshire and the Midlands they themselves are breaching lockdown rules. During the day and early evening the Fitties people are clearly

seen in their hi vis jackets wandering around in a threesome, again breaking lockdown rules ,no social distancing and being clearly out all day. So come on, Fitties residents, observe the rules yourselves as some of you are clearly breaking them. Do this before condemning those who only want to exercise on a bike or on foot.

Heathrow is to begin temperature screening of passengers, weeks after the measure was deployed by many other major airports around the world.

Chief executive John Holland-Kaye said it will trial technologies and processes which could form the basis of a common international standard for health screening at airports. The first trial will be launched in the next two weeks and will involve using cameras which are capable of monitoring the temperatures of people.

No fine for professor Professor Neil Ferguson will not face further action by police after accepting he made an “error of judgment” by breaching social distancing rules despite being a key figure in influencing

the lockdown. Scotland Yard criticised his behaviour as “plainly disappointing” but ruled out issuing a fine because he “has taken responsibility” after resigning as a key Government adviser in the virus response.

£100m for charities

A charity appeal to support NHS staff, volunteers and patients during the coronavirus pandemic has raised £100 million – with almost a third coming from the efforts of Captain Tom Moore.

NHS Charities Together, the umbrella organisation bringing together all the official charities of the health service, has raised the funds in the past six weeks. Alongside fun runs, charity singles and virtual quizzes, fundraising was given a huge boost by Captain Tom.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have marked their son’s first birthday by posting a video of Meghan reading to a beaming Archie.

With her son in her lap and proud father Harry behind the camera, Meghan holds the classic children’s tale Duck! Rabbit! – one of Archie’s favourite books.

Calls mount for furlough answers

Chancellor Rishi Sunak is facing calls to set out the future for the Government’s furlough scheme which is supporting workers staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak.

There are concerns over the cost of the programme, with latest Government figures showing 6.3 million people are having up to 80% of their salaries paid by the Treasury at a price of £8 billion.

It was reported that Mr Sunak will announce plans next week to wind down the scheme from July, with options including cutting the subsidy level and lowering the £2,500 cap on monthly payments.

But Treasury sources insisted “no decisions have yet been taken” over the scheme which was introduced to prevent firms from laying off thousands of workers during the lockdown.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock had said the Government must “wean” businesses off the scheme “as the economy gets back on its feet”.

A senior Government source said that “people are addicted to the scheme”, adding: “We’re not talking about a cliff-edge but we have to get people back to work.”

Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, criticised Mr Hancock and the source for using “dreadful terms” against “workers who through no fault of their own have been told to stay away from work” during the pandemic.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is calling for the Government to set out the next steps for the scheme, which it described as “a lifeline”.

“It’s important that that scheme is in place. The Government does need to pro-

vide clarity about the future status of that scheme,” Sir Keir’s spokesman said.

“What we’ve said is that the Government should allow for greater flexibility for businesses with some staff able to semi-furlough to ensure that they do not face a cliffedge when the scheme comes to an end.”

Mr Sunak has acknowledged the current level of expenditure is not “sustainable” in the long term but promised there will be no “cliff-edge” cut-off.

He said ministers were investigating ways to wind down the scheme, due to run to the end of June, in a “measured way”.

The Liberal Democrats have called for a “tapered” end to the programme, with the Treasury paying 50% of salaries for the first month after people return to work, falling to 30% after the third month, with employers picking up the full bill after the fourth.

The Government has agreed to scrap a planned revaluation of business rates after retailers warned the current rules risk piling more pressure on to high streets next year.

Ministers said they would postpone the tri-annual revaluation, which determines how much each business pays, because of the virus lockdown shutting businesses.

Its members have become fixtures on television sets across the nation, with Americans hungry for information and marooned at home, but the White House has begun discussions about winding down the group, which has been meeting less frequently, vice president Mike Pence said.

“I think we’re having conversations about that and about what the proper time is for the taskforce to complete its work and for the ongoing efforts to take place on an agency-by-agency level,” Mr Pence said, adding that the group could wind down by early June.

“We’re now looking at a little bit of a different form, and that form is safety and opening,” Donald Trump said on a visit to Arizona, “and we’ll have a different group, probably, set

up for that.” Asked about his statements in February playing down the threat of the virus, he told ABC in an interview that medical experts had also underestimated the risk and added: “I want to be optimistic.

I don’t want to be Mr Doom and Gloom.

“It’s a very bad subject. I’m not looking to tell the American people, when nobody really knows what is happening yet, ‘Oh, this is going to be so tragic’.”

Mr Trump is seeking to move his focus away from the virus’s spread and towards more familiar – and, aides hope, politically safer – ground: talking up the economy.

As more states have begun to ease closure orders, despite warnings that that could lead to spikes in new cases, Mr Trump has been trying to highlight his administration’s work in helping businesses and employees rebound.

Aides said he would hold more frequent round tables with chief executives, business owners and beneficiaries of the trillions of dollars in federal aid already approved

by Congress, and begin to outline what he hopes to see in a future “phase four” recovery package.

Mr Pence told reporters at a White House briefing that the US could be “in a very different place” by late May and early June “as we continue to practise social distancing and states engage in safe and responsible reopening plans”.

The administration is beginning

to eye that window as the appropriate time for federal agencies to begin managing the pandemic response “in a more traditional way”, he said.

Deborah Birx, the taskforce coordinator, said the federal government would still keep a close eye on the data if the group disbands.

“It took us a while to build that capacity and we’ll make sure that we’re watching that at a federal level,” she said.

Mr Trump and his White House team have been operating in a virus-safe bubble, thanks to rapid coronavirus tests provided to senior staff and anyone who meets the president.

He has been repeatedly talking up the administration’s response to the virus, despite persistent criticism that he dragged his feet and failed to adequately increase production of personal protective equipment and testing supplies.

“We did everything right. Now it’s time to get back to work,” he said.

Lifting UN arms embargo is our ‘right’ THE Iranian president has said that lifting a UN arms embargo on Tehran would be an “obvious right”, and added a veiled warning of unspecified steps Iran could take if the embargo is extended, as the United States wants.

Hassan Rouhani’s remarks were in response to a push by the US, which last month circulated a draft UN resolution that would indefinitely extend the embargo, which is set to expire in October.

If the embargo is extended, Mr Rouhani said Iran’s response would mirror the steps it took after the US pullout from the nuclear deal – including going beyond the deal’s enrichment and stockpile limitations and injecting uranium gas into over 1,000 centrifuges at a fortified nuclear facility built inside a mountain.

Cruel tears There is much talk of what life will be like when the virus has passed and what changes, if any, will affect our days.

One at least occurs to me this week, a change long overdue.

I hope probably against hope that television reporters will refrain from interviewing the distraught and bereaved to the point where they weep.

It has seemed obligatory to prolong an interview in extremis as if tears were required to add gravitas.

This is both unnecessary and, frankly, cruel. We all have a breaking point and to cause a demonstration of it is willful.

he ex-Smith family Bentley saloon mentioned on this page proved of interest.

So this week another of the same breed but infinitely older and once a familiar sight in Grimsby many years ago which will warm the cockles of local enthusiasts – and make me very wistful.

It is a much travelled car. But despite its age – it will be 100 years old in two years’ time – its whereabouts are well known unlike the Smith saloon. Truth of the matter is that old Bentleys are much prized and their owners often members of a club. Therefore, even further, they

were built to last and they have done so in respectable quantity.

This one is legendary; indeed it became a legend in its own lifetime.

For this is a 1922 red label 3-litre model, fast and furious and once every small boy’s ideal motorcar.

This very car delivered me, aged 8, to my first boarding school in 1946. I can see it in my mind’s eye all those years ago. But I didn’t see it for long for when I was away my father sold it and it became just a memory.

Years passed. A car, left unused in a garage, deteriorated and faded from local memory.

But in 1960 it was rescued, reme-

died by Service Engineering in Roberts Street (the head mechanic remembered it even 40 years later) and became once again a familiar sight in town.

I recall it standing outside the old Grimsby Telegraph office on Cleethorpe Road for it had become the property of a young reporter who drove it daily for several years before (foolishly) parting company.

You will remember my recent article on that book on Old Grimsby by Anderson Bates which by fluke was found in a south coast bookshop and brought back to Grimsby.

Well, sad to say, a similar reunion

does not await this particular old Bentley.

For after that reporter sold it, it went to San Diego, California where a man intended to ‘do it up’. But he never got round to it and he in turn sold it. “It was a foolish mistake,” he admitted.

Now it is in Arizona, far far away from Weelsby Road and the Telegraph and it won’t be coming home because, its owner tells me it would cost £100,000. And what about the postage?

Young reporters, even when they too grow old and grey, can’t manage that. I shall never drive it again.

The popularity of the quiz in the papers and on the wireless is, we are assured, at a peak during this lockdown. If this is so I shall add fuel to the fire.

For years I have kept a commonplace book of oddments and novelties.

So, delving into it, a question or two per week. Quizzes are a mixed blessing. If you know the answer they’re too easy. If you don’t they’re silly. Anyway, here we go.

Sincere thanks to Scartho Helpers, whose kindness knows no bounds Scartho ceased to be a village in 1927. That year it was hijacked and incorporated in Grimsby Borough’s boundary.

The Scartho Road, host only to two very large houses, a ‘new’ cemetery, an infirmaryworkhouse and a windmill had, by ribbon development become more than a rural annexe. Yet it never lost its village spirit.

This week that spirit was made manifest by a group of kindly people, the Scartho

Helpers, who put a leaflet through every letter box offering assistance of all kinds to those duty-bound to remain in isolation.

And this, very specifically, applies to the old and infirm.

Here, on this generous missive, is a combining of local shops, of the village chemist, of the weekly fishmonger, and providers of needs and newspaper deliverers all offering a service above and

beyond their normal daily round.

It is in fact a coming together of a village which has somehow survived almost a century of municipal amalgamation.

The organisers of this aid, Sally & Steve Wilkinson and Paul Cardy are of course to be thanked by all parishioners not least for adding a message that you will never have seen before on such a leaflet. It reads: ‘Love to you all’.

Centred around our anti-hero Vinnie, played by co-creator Joe Gilgun, and his gang of idiotic low level criminal pals, it’s a bit like a poor man’s Ocean’s Eleven.

Instead of slick suits in Vegas, it’s a lot of cheap sports wear in Lancashire.

The last time we saw the crew they were stealing cars and miniature horses. Then Vinnie got into big trouble with the local gangster Terrence McCann.

Devs is chilling and disturbing

pick of the DAY brassic Sky One, 10pm Now we catch up with Vinnie as he lives out life having faked his own death to escape Terrence’s clutches.

He’s been hiding out in his weed shed, only popping to the local corner shop for essentials while wearing a terrible disguise.

“I’m dead, Edith!” he yells at an old lady. “I’m not Vinnie. I’ve had a funeral, we’ve all been really sad.”

It’s down to Tommo, played by Ryan Sampson and Erin, played

Danny’s in hiding, and it’s up to Erin, left, (Michelle Keegan) to coax him out

The plan is to buy the lease on a pole-dancing club by robbing a travelling circus with the help of disgruntled clown Mr Popov (John Thomson).

Watch out for a great scene with Dominic West as Vinnie’s doctor, pretending to be an emotional support dog, panting and all... yes it’s barking mad.

DEVS BBC2, 9pm As this creepy tech thriller concludes, it’s time for Lily to face Forest and Katie for the last time, knowing that her life is in danger.

Forest, the weird egotistical head of Amaya (played by Nick Offerman) and his terrifying sidekick Katie (played by Alison Pill) already know exactly what will happen.

They have already witnessed how everything plays out many times before. But now, with painful inevitability, Lily (Sonoya Mizuno) needs to experience it herself.

“I don’t know what I am anymore,” she says. “I’m not even choosing the words that I speak now.”

But she has Forest absolutely nailed, describing him as having a Messiah complex.

With her death already predetermined and a gun in her pocket, can she defy him and prevent what is about to happen? And is everyone at Devs crackers?

“Don’t worry, it will be ok,” says Forest, underplaying the situation.

It’s all very melodramatic, deep, chilling and insane.

Lily’s life is in danger

Spring at Jimmy’s Farm Channel 4, 8.05pm Jimmy Doherty is a busy man. The ambitious Essex lad first appeared on our screens in 2004 as a fresh-faced 28-year-old, having bought the leasehold on a Suffolk dairy farm and with the plan to create a thriving business selling sausages and bacon direct to the public from his own butchery.

Despite having no qualifications in pig farming, he reared several rare breeds of them, including his flagship brand, the almost-extinct Essex pig.

Jimmy’s Farm was the first of many TV appearances, he even joined his childhood pal Jamie Oliver – who gave him a business loan to buy the farm – on a couple of shows.

The business grew to include an award-winning restaurant, a nature trail, a butterfly house and numerous science and food festivals and there is now an animal park full of exotic creatures across 280 acres.

Now Channel 4 is back on the farm for a four-part documentary to find out how he and his team are managing in these difficult times, giving families cooped up indoors the chance to see spring in the countryside unfold week by week.

Will Alex and Hannah be the answer to each other’s prayers?

FIRST DATES HOTEL Channel 4, 9pm Somewhere in a backroom in a TV production office sit the unsung heroes in casting who have mostly excellent matchmaking skills.

The number of times couples seem to be absolutely perfect for each other on this show is just astonishing.

Take Alex and Georgia for example.

Alex is an eccentric 24-year-old antiques dealer with impeccable manners, hoping to find someone who appreciates him – tweed jacket, straw boater and all. “I want someone who gets me,” he says, “which is difficult because I’m not sure if I get me.”

Meanwhile, 26-year-old opera singer Hannah is after a man who is the perfect gentleman, someone intelligent and quirky.

She’s not had the best luck so far. “I connect with the more tragic operas because my love life is tragic,” she says.

But could the Channel 4 casting magic change her fortune?

Elsewhere, the magic is slightly off-kilter. Georgia and Rachael are on dates with men – but fancy each other more. Who will be left broken hearted?

Social distancing: Protestors in Boston and Huntingdon, California

Medics take a break from lifesaving work, but not all American have been so selfless in this time of crisis

W

hen Captain Tom Moore set out with his walking frame at the start of April, the Second World War veteran set himself a modest goal.

The heart-stealing 100-year-old hoped to raise £1,000 for the doctors and nurses at the forefront of the battle against Covid-19.

Now as the nation’s most famous Tommy, both in name and in service, the hero has raised almost £33 million with his incredible efforts.

Colonel Moore, as he has become, is the epitome of everything great about Britain. Never once complaining. Never once refusing to play his part. And never once giving up.

He has been the example for every generation.

It was the same selfless attitude he took to the trenches during the Second World War. But while Captain Tom has thankfully managed to stay clear of the deadly coronavirus, sadly several of his brothers in arms who survived Hitler’s bombs, have not been so fortunate.

Honourable men and women, who carried weapons of war in defence of our freedom and liberties, have now been taken from us by this invisible enemy.

We mourn their loss, remaining appreciative of the enormous sacrifices they made. Sacrifices that now put Americans, and an increasing number of Brits who flout life-saving advice, to shame.

While in the UK, we have seen selfishness and stupidity, in America, it comes armed.

Growing numbers, carrying weapons more powerful, more deadly than those wielded by our World War veterans have been on the streets protesting that their freedoms are currently being curtailed.

As America’s Covid-19 deaths continue to outpace the rest of the globe, making it the epicentre of the disease, people here are more concerned with going to the beach or down the mall.

They whine they are anxious, angry, tired, upset – unhappy that this temporary restraint on their

We have seen thousands of these armed idiots, fuelled by Donald Trump, screaming at officials and threatening civil obedience with some, unbelievably, confronting nurses and doctors outside hospitals.

Lockdown tensions have become so great here it has left state governors fearing all-out violence.

Between our two great nations, millions of servicemen and women have put themselves in harm’s way in ways most of us could not even comprehend.

Some were placed in the most atrocious prisoner of war camps, held in squalid hellholes and starved, all while being kept from their country and their loved ones.

Many did not make it. Those lucky enough to survive were left scarred for life.

Now selfabsorbed and self-centred

Honourable men and women, who carried weapons of war in defence of our freedom and liberties, have now been taken from us by this invisible enemy.

Americans – and some Brits – are not content with staying at home, watching TV, surfing the internet, spending extended time with their families. Instead, they grow increasingly hostile and just want out.

Of course, many face financial hardship, loss of income and an uncertain future but none to my knowledge has yet been shot at or bombed.

Some veterans were POWs for years, yet it has barely been two months since social distancing began.

In that time, the coronavirus death tolls in Britain and the States have surpassed the combined loss of life in

both the Falklands and Vietnam wars.

Yet these protesters, with their guns and fake bravado, who endanger life by risking spreading the virus by standing together and refusing to wear masks, claim to know better than our scientists and medical experts.

They continue to disregard how best to slowly turn the economy back on as it doesn’t match their personal timetables.

The entire world is under siege right now, but no one here is a prisoner of war.

We are not being asked to wear claustrophobic 1940s gas masks as the Luftwaffe fly overhead. They simply want us to don a covering across our mouths while standing a few feet away from each other.

The majority of us will, and when this war is over, while medics deserve real medals, we should decorate ourselves with makeshift ones for patience, compassion and support of the heroes who remain on the front lines.

So, to those taking up your AR-15s, why not pick up your TV remotes or take a stroll to the shops instead.

Prince Andrew is silent as the grave on Epstein probe Prince Andrew was asked this week if he wants his “epitaph to be I succeeded in escaping justice” after ignoring three requests to be Prince Andrew interviewed by lawyers for Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged victims.

Attorneys for women allegedly abused by the late paedophile have grown increasingly frustrated by the Duke of York and his new legal team who refuse to engage with them.

David Boies, a lawyer who represents more than a dozen of the US financier’s victims, hit out at the royal.

Harrison Ford is under investigation following an incident at a small airport in California after admitting he made a mistake. The US Federal Aviation Harrison Ford Administration said the Hollywood actor was piloting an aircraft that crossed the runway as another plane was attempting to land at Hawthorne Municipal Airport.

The Star Wars star, 77, has admitted his error, apologising for the mistake.

The probe comes after he was investigated for mistakenly landing on a taxiway and also for flying over the top of a jet with 110 passengers on board that was preparing to taxi.

In the Star Wars movies Ford flew the Millennium Falcon with ease, but now it seems he should not be allowed to have his hands on a plane’s controls solo.

SCAMMED WHILE SELF-ISOLATING The type of online scams related to coronavirus bursted in a month

HE public is being warned to watch out for coronavirus-related scams, with authorities having already tackled more than 2,000 in the first month of lockdown.

The Government’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched a ‘Cyber Aware’ campaign to help people deal with the threat, as it revealed it has already taken down 2,058 online scams related to the coronavirus.

These included 471 fake online shops selling fraudulent virus-related items and 832 advance-fee frauds, where a large sum of money is promised in return for a set-up payment.

As well as this, the NCSC removed 555 websites created to deliver malware like computer viruses, and 200 phishing sites that try to trick people into giving out information such as passwords or credit card details.

Minister for Security, James Brokenshire said: “Criminals are seeking to exploit our greater use of emails, video conferencing and other technologies for their advantage.

“It’s despicable that they are using the coronavirus outbreak as cover to try to scam and steal from people in their homes. We all have a part to play in seeing they don’t succeed.”

In order to protect people from online harm, the NCSC has published advice on protecting passwords, accounts and devices, including guidance for using video conferencing services securely, and launched a reporting service for suspicious emails.

Dubious emails can be sent to report@phishing.gov.uk, and the NCSC’s system will automatically check for phishing scams and immediately remove criminal sites.

NCSC Chief Executive Officer Ciaran Martin said: “Technology is helping us cope with the coronavirus crisis and will play a role helping us out of it - but that means cyber security is more important than ever.

“With greater use of technology, there are different ways attackers can harm all of us. But everyone can help to stop them by following the

Across the UK, people lost £824.8 million to fraud including card, banking and online scams, in 2019, according to figures from UK Finance.

While the amount stolen has dropped from £123.0 million in 2018, the number of cases jumped by a quarter from 20,904 to 25,849.

After a long illness, Brian aged 85 years passed away peacefully on the 2nd May 2020.

Loving Husband of the late Gillian, devoted Dad of Ian, Andrea and Richard, Father in law of Debbie, Roy and Kate. When Cleethorpes shocked Yorkshire rivals and stormed to league title win a look back to the momentous meggies season of 2003 when mike smith’s men shone brightly

WHEN Mike Smith was made captain of Cleethorpes Cricket Club, he made it plain that it was his intention to skipper a team capable of holding its own in the Yorkshire ECB League.

For a number of seasons the club had struggled, relying on the performances of overseas players to keep them away from the foot of the table.

Shadab Kabir and Mathew Sinclair scored the majority of the teams runs in the period 1999 to 2001 before Shane Deitz arrived in 2002.

After a fairly successful season, Smith sought the final pieces to complete what he thought would be a highly competitive side for the 2003 season.

Batsmen Bill Kirby and Jon Trower were added to the ranks along with opening bowler Andy Ellis, who moved from Appleby Frodingham, alongside the relatively new Andy Carrington and wicket-keeper Graham Wilson.

Deitz returned from Australia for a second stint (after scoring 1,335 runs in 2002).

Talented teenagers, and future County players, Stuart Airey and Alex Osmond became regular first XI players, which on paper looked a well-balanced squad, capable of more than holding its own in the Yorkshire League.

It must have been way above Smith’s wildest dreams that, come September, the club would be crowned league champions, becoming the first side outside of Yorkshire to win the pennant.

They concluded their season by adding silverware with a huge win in the Bews Brown KO Cup Final.

The opening weekend of the season gave no indication of what was to follow in the months ahead. They began the campaign with a five-wicket victory over Doncaster with both Carrington and Deitz taking four wickets while skipper Smith made 55.

match of the Bews Brown Cup. In a match reduced to 25 overs per side because of rain, Messingham made 161-5 a total the Meggies passed with just two balls to spare. Newcomer Kirby showed his capabilities by hitting 49 and sharing a 125 run opening partnership with Deitz.

The opening game of May against the Yorkshire Academy was washed out, but the Meggies had an outstanding victory over York in the League Cup two days later. The strong York side made 153-9 with Ellis taking 3-50 and Richard Griffin 2-22. A half century from Kirby saw the target reached for the loss of eight wickets.

After a four-wicket victory over Hull, with Ellis getting 5-56, the Meggies were dumped out of the League Cup by Doncaster, going down by seven wickets.

Rain caused the game against Castleford to be abandoned, but the Meggies finished off May with a series of outstanding victories.

Barnsley, Harrogate and Rotherham were all defeated.

Will Abe smashed 75 against Barnsley while Kirby and Smith put together a 152 partnership against Harrogate.

Bracebridge entertained the Meggies in the second round of the Bews Brown competition.

Rain halted the game after 30 overs with Bracebridge on 117-5 after James Osmond had brushed aside the top order. A result was achieved by a bowl-out, which took 55 deliveries, before the Meggies won when the wicket was hit for a fifth time.

June was not a particularly good month, although it started well with wins against both Sheffield sides, United and Collegiate, and Trower recording his first century for the club, at Abbeydale.

Scarborough defeated the Meggies by just four runs before they had another bad day against Doncaster. A 282-run partnership between Tariq Aziz and Peter Ellis enabled Doncaster to finish on 341-4 before the Meggies were dismissed for 162 with Duncan Jones returning figures of 5-50.

Jones is still terrorising batsmen, but these

days he does it quietly by just raising his umpire finger.

Three straight wins, with major contributions coming from different members of the squad, got supporters thinking of a title challenge. Smith made 95, Kirby 80, Trower 63 with Carrington returning bowling figures of 5-46 while Stuart Airey took 4-37 in a home victory over Driffield.

The Meggies were halted in their tracks when Castleford beat them by eight wickets at Chichester Road, but they bounced back to winning ways with a thrilling victory over Barnsley at Shaw Lane.

A fine undefeated 82 from James Stevenson enabled Cleethorpes to reach 185-8 before they dismissed the Tykes for 176 with Alex Osmond, showing signs of what was to come in later years, returning figures of 3-18 in the 9 run victory.

A ten-wicket win over Boston in the Semi Final of the Bews Brown Cup was sandwiched between losses to top three candidates York and Harrogate.

Mike Smith, looking relaxed under his wide rimmed sun hat, rallied his squad who responded by setting off an astonishing seven-match winning run after defeating Rotherham by 139 runs with Shane Deitz hitting a double ton assisted by James Osmond’s 54.

Sheffield Collegiate who included Matthew Root (father of the present England Captain) in their side were beaten by five wickets with Deitz making 97 not out.

Two days later the Meggies completed doubles over both Sheffield clubs when they won by three wickets against United with Jon Trower turning in a man of the match performance by hitting 40 after taking four wickets.

An eight-wicket victory over a Scarborough side which included Adam Lyth, kept the run going as Deitz scored his third century of the season.

With three games to go, the Meggies had climbed back up the table and were serious contenders for the title. Yorkshire Academy

came to Chichester Road with a strong side which included Steven Pattison, and Nick Thornycroft. After scoring 152 and reducing the Meggies to 67-5 the Academy appeared to be in charge, but an 86-run partnership between Trower and Alex Osmond kept the dream alive.

Neighbours Appleby Frodingham were the visitors to Chichester Road for the ultimate league fixture. They showed no intent to do the Meggies any favours as they batted first and made 174, with John Parker hitting 49 and Matt Morland 40. Despite Paul Hilton taking 4-53 for the Scunthorpe side another half century from Deitz saw the Meggies home by three wickets.

The final game was at Driffield and the Meggies, level with Harrogate in the race for the title, had to win. Batting first Cleethorpes totalled 228-7 thanks to a fine innings from Trower who hit 118 not out.

He completed his century by striding down the wicket and hitting the ball over not only the sight screen, but the pavilion roof as well.

Driffield lost wickets at regular intervals when they replied.

News filtered through that Harrogate had beaten Doncaster by nine wickets, but the Meggies kept their calm, and eventually, with four overs to spare, bowled out the opposition for 154 with Ellis claiming his 48th wicket of the season.

Victory gave Cleethorpes the title - despite Harrogate finishing level on points. The Meggies had won more games, which gave them top spot.

The following weekend saw them collect the Bew Browns Cup, after hitting 314-4 (Indy Hayre 116, Alex Osmond 95) they then bowled out Caistor for 178 with Carrington taking 6-16.

Season 2019 saw the Meggies witness the other side of the coin by being relegated.

When they eventually get back on the field of play their ambition must be to reclaim ECB status. Once that is achieved they may have to revert to the mind-set of Mike Smith if they wish to stay at that level.

WE caught up with new Grimsby Town chairman Philip Day, who gave us his take on a range of talking points amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Day, who was appointed chairman this week, spoke about restarting the season, player contracts and the club’s proposed new stadium...

The current situation

All our staff and players are aware of how serious the situation is now.

We are also all aware that we should have some certainty next week.

It is the uncertainty that is creating all the anxiety. If we knew where we were going we would plan accordingly, but at the moment we are very much up in the air.

We are planning for various worst-case scenarios, hopefully those won’t come to fruition.

But we just don’t know.

What happens next?

While EFL chairman Rick Parry was giving evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee about the impact of coronavirus this week, he was asked who would make the decision about carrying on playing this season or not.

He said that while the EFL board under their regulations can make that decision, his view is that it would be put to the clubs for them to make the decision.
