The number of coronavirus patients at Hull’s hospitals has doubled over the past week.

Nationally, there has been a big rise in hospital admissions due to the virus as cases continue to soar.

In Liverpool, one of the worst-hit area, capacity is already at 90 per cent and Nightingale hospitals are preparing to reopen to cope with demand.

In Hull the number of Covid-19 patients remains relatively low, but the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust says there are

our emergency department with genuine emergencies so we can help those with life-threatening and serious illnesses. If you do this, our hospitals will be able to manage the relentless pressure of winter and whatever else comes our way.”

The Trust’s winter plans include a new winter ward that will open in December and will provide 22 extra beds while extra clinicians will be recruited, including consultants, specialist nurses and surgical staff.

The new wards are laid out differently with the beds spaced out much more. So far, they have not taken in any patients but that could change in the coming weeks.

Coronavirus rates in Hull and the East Riding have risen sharply in recent weeks which is mirrored across the country.

Yesterday it was confirmed a total of 70 people tested positive in the East Riding, with the number of those who have tested positive for the disease now at a total of 2,994.

The cumulative infection rate is at 877.6.

In Hull, a further 50 people have tested positive, with a new total of 2,386 positive cases in the city.

The Government said that as of 9am yesdterday, there had been a further 19,980 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK.

The trust’s position remains the same as it was a few weeks ago when deputy chief operating officer at Hull University Hospitals NHS Trust, Michelle Kemp said: “We have been working for months on plans to see us through winter, regardless of a second wave or not.

“But this isn’t just about what we’re doing - you can play a major part in this by only coming to

There is currently one patient in intensive care while two more patients with the virus have died this week, bringing the total to 219.

The numbers remain some way off the height of the pandemic when there were around 40-50 patients being treated in Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill at any one time.

But the trust says is well-prepared to deal with the second wave while also coping with the rise in flu and other winter respiratory diseases.

Fears plaque to honour the city’s lost fishermen may never be recovered emotional appeal after memorial was stolen

There is outrage among Hull’s fishing community after mindless thieves stole a plaque from a site where loved ones go to mourn loved ones lost at sea.

No Christmas lights switch-on in Hull this year Hull will not have a Christmas light switch-on even this year.

Coronavirus has put pay to the council’s plans for its showpiece Christmas event which usually sees thousands of people flock into Queen Victoria Square.

Speaking during the summer, amidst the backdrop of other huge events like Hull Fair being axed, Hull City Council confirmed it was yet to make a decision on the viability of holding the switch-on event in 2020.

However, news of the cancellation was confirmed on Thursday.

The authority has confirmed that more than 45,600 lights are being put up across Hull city centre despite the cancellation in a bid to show that “Christmas is not cancelled”.

It has been confirmed that it will light up the night from some time in mid-November.

Councillor Dave Craker, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “It is, of course, disappointing that we are unable to hold the annual switch-on event that attracts thousands each year.

However, Christmas is not cancelled and we are working hard to ensure the city centre still has the warm festive feel that shoppers are accustomed to.”

The city centre will still also get its traditional 45ft Norway Spruce, which acts as a centrepiece beside the Queen Victoria statue.

KWL teams are currently installing more than 228 separate columns, decorating Jameson Street, King Edward St and Saville Street trees, and installing a Whitefriargate and Silver Street lighting scheme.

Police spent just nine minutes searching for freezing Jacquie and didn’t leave their car

A Hull woman who froze to death in a cemetery could have been saved after police officers gave up on the search after just nine minutes, an inquest heard.

Jacqueline Parsons, 56, injured her leg after falling off her bike in Western Cemetery in October last year, and was found by a dog walker who raised the alarm at 4.45pm.

At 6.27pm, an unmarked police car manned by two PCSOs entered the cemetery and conducted a search, and the log was closed at 6.36pm when she was not found.

Neither PCSOs were given proper training or search lights.

An inquest held at Hull Coroners’ Court found that the officers did not conduct an adequate search to find Jacquie on one of the coldest nights of the year, which could have prevented her from dying of hypothermia after her body temperature dropped below 35C. Jacquie tragically died after spending 17 hours in freezing temperatures and was found in Western Cemetery off Chanterlands Avenue at 9.15am by another dog walker on Sunday, October 28, 2018, after police were called at 4.45pm the day before.

The drop in body temperature combined with the alcohol in her system, which was at 93mg per 100ml of blood, only just over the legal drink driving limit of 80mg per 100ml, and the injury to her ankle, were deemed as the cause of death by Dr Kirsten Hope.

The pathologist also testified that if Jacquie had been found in time after the alarm was raised, her temperature could have been raised and she could have been saved.

After hearing all of the evidence, coroner Professor Paul Marks gave a narrative conclusion and said that the police made multiple errors after the dog walker first raised the alarm upon finding Miss Parsons, but failing to help her due to her injury, which meant that she could not stand.

He said that the call was marked as high priority, which meant that police should have responded in 30 minutes, but instead took an extra hour to attend, as the force were busy, and by then it had become dark.

Professor Marks then set out the further failings that were made and said: “At

6.25pm, two PCSOs were assigned to the call and were in the vicinity of the cemetery at worst within five minutes before the patrol entered.

“The gates were open and the PCSOs remained in the vehicle and searched slowly with the windows open and torches were used to scan the area.

“They were expecting her to be walking with her bike and did not consider that she would be laying on the ground.

“They were not trained in search techniques and did not have adequate power in their torchlights [they were not bright enough].

“She was in the cemetery [close to where she was reported injured] but was not found.

“The search was of an inadequate duration, there was a lack of search training, and a lack of the ground being searched and the lighting equipment was of inadequate power.

“The log was then closed by police and the search lasted less than 10 minutes.”

As Humberside Police’s professional standards department had investigated the mistakes made during the search and implemented lessons learnt, Professor Marks found no ongoing system failure.

These lessons were to train all PCSOs and new recruits in basic search techniques.

But Professor Marks added that Miss Parsons’ life could have been saved and said: “If Miss Parsons was located by the police patrol at 6.27pm, she would have been found alive and the hospital would have been able to treat her for hypothermia and

on the balance of probabilities, she would have survived.

“Thus, the failure to find her resulted in her death.”

Humberside Police said that the PCSOs who attended “did their very best” during the search and that new policies have now been implemented.

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble said: “Jacqueline’s death was a terribly tragic incident and our thoughts remain with her family and loved ones, who we have been supporting throughout this very sad time.

“We voluntarily and immediately referred the incident to the Independent Office of Police Conduct due to our involvement and they asked us to carry out a full and thorough review and identify any learning, which we have done.

“We acknowledge the coroner’s comments today about training and speed of response and we have considered these aspects in our own investigation.

“The PCSOs who attended did their very best to search a large cemetery which had poor lighting.

“However, using additional specially trained officers in circumstances where the risks are identifiable is something we will actively consider. We have provided further guidance to our staff when dealing with similar type of incidents, which the coroner has acknowledged today.

“As a service we are all very saddened by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of Jacqueline.”

Paying tribute to Miss Parsons, her family

described her as “such a nice girl and such a young girl too,” who “had all of her life in front of her.”

Miss Parsons and her partner met in 1987 in Blue Heaven in Southcoates Lane, east Hull, and broke up in 1992, but then got back together in touch in 2001 and stayed together until Miss Parsons’ death, living in Sunny Bank near Spring Bank West, She spent 24 years working as a purchase ledger clerk at Van Leer before it became Greif. However, when the company left Hull Miss Parsons was made redundant and she went on to work in other roles.

The couple never had any children but Miss Parsons, who was born in Richmond, Surrey, before moving to Hull with her family aged nine, adored her two chihuahuas who she referred to as “her babies”.

Her partner Malcolm Cuthbert previously paid tribute to Miss Parsons and said: “She was just a happy person who had a good smile and life was going well for her. You get highs and lows in life and at this period she was in a good place.

“She lived for her dogs – Tiny Tim and Maximus – and I’m doing my best now to look after them. The last thing she said to me was to make sure I looked after her babies while she was on holiday because she is supposed to be in Morocco now with her sister and niece.

“She was a bit of a spiritual type of person and complete strangers would just sit and have conversations with her and she would always listen.”

People paying £225 for coronavirus test

‘Business is booming’ for private pharmacy Bosses at a private clinic in Hull offering coronavirus swab and antibody tests say “business is booming” as a result of the chaos over the national online booking system.

The Atropa Pharmacy in National Avenue is believed to the only private clinic in the city offering paid-for tests.

It charges either £105 or £225 for a swab test with prices dependent on how quickly patients need their results.

An antibody test to check whether someone has previously had the virus costs £49.

Tests have to be pre-booked, but are usually available on the same day.

Owner Bryn Smales said: “When we moved here three years ago we were able to offer a wider range of

private clinical services because of the extra space.

“At the time, they included travel vaccinations and private blood tests so when Covid came along we decided to offer swab and antibody tests too.

“They are proving very popular, particularly among people who are going abroad and need tests done quite quickly.

“We are also working with a number of companies, ranging from firms with ten people to ones with up to 250 employees.

“The feedback we get from employees has been really positive, because I think they recognise the steps their company is taking to get

them back to work safely.”

The business, which also operates an online pharmacy, offers tests at its National Avenue offices or at workplaces via a mobile testing service.

“We work with three laboratories, two in Manchester and one in London, and they are all reporting a massive increase in demand,” said Mr Smales.

“When the national booking situation blew up about three weeks ago it started going crazy and we have definitely benefited from that.

“As a result, the labs are having to increase their capacity and that might eventually affect our charges because it’s an extra cost they are having to take on but, for the moment, we think our prices are quite fair.

“We can return a swab test result in 24 to 48 hours of receipt by the laboratory.

“We also provide the necessary certification for overseas travel and accredited documentation for employers to show their workers are Covid-19 free.”

He said one of the original aims of the business had been to encourage more men to take tests

such as screenings for prostrate cancer.

“It was all about breaking down barriers and getting men to look after their health properly instead of just ignoring it. The same applies with private healthcare in general.

I think people sometimes feel it’s going to be too expensive and out of their reach, but we have proved that’s not the case at all.”

News Plans to stop unnecessary hospital visits A new GP referral service will be trialled at Hull Royal Infirmary next month in a bid to prevent unnecessary trips to A&E. Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is opening a new Acute Care Navigation Hub at the hospital as part of a four-week trial.

GPs taking part in the trial will be able to use the hub to discuss patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week instead of sending them to the Emergency Department (ED) for assessment.

Stacey Healand, the trust’s project lead for the Acute Care Navigation Hub, said: “GPs will be able

to ask our experts in specialties like elderly medicine, respiratory or orthopaedics for advice about their patients in a single phone call, at any hour of the day or night.

“We are hoping this new hub will prevent around 60 patients having to make unnecessary trips to ED by giving their GPs immediate access to the information, support and expertise they require.

“We expect this new system will give patients a far better experience, sparing often elderly people the inconvenience of having to come out in the cold and wait in our Emergency Department.”

A restaurant popular with families and couples will reopen today - two years after it suddenly closed.

Medici Restaurant, which first opened 21 years ago in North Ferriby, closed as a restaurant in October 2018, and relaunched as an events venue, hosting everything from work functions and weddings, to birthdays and baby showers.

Owner Medi Karimian said although the events business was popular and thriving, it has not been viable since lockdown, and with the rule of six still in place, he’s had no choice but to cancel all pre-booked parties.

With restrictions likely to be in place for some time, Mr Karimian said he has taken the decision to re-open the original restaurant and is excited about the new plan.

He said: “We are reopening as a restaurant, like before, the menu is different, but mainly has the same sort of thing that we used to.

“It is exactly two years ago that we changed it, it was doing very well, but because of the situation today, a lot of parties have been cancelled, we had loads of weddings [cancel], so we said ‘OK, we will put it back to a restaurant’.

“I am very excited about taking it back, because although it was very good and popular, this is what I’ve been trained for.

“Our customers are very excited,

we have had lots of emails. They have missed us a lot.”

Mr Karimian said he has employed Italian chefs and waiters, but that the restaurant will have a Mediterranean theme with French, Italian and Greek dishes.

The restaurant will be open Tuesday to Sunday, and for the first time will also offer a Sunday roast.

Mr Karimian said the new menu includes pasta and barbecue dishes, and over the next few weeks, pizza will also be introduced.

Initially, the popular family hour which offered 25 per cent off for those eating before 7pm will not be offered, because in line with government rules, the restaurant will have to close at 10pm, making a second sitting impossible.

Mr Karimian added: “We’ve done very reasonable prices, but there will be no family hour. If we did family hour we would lose the second sitting because of the 10pm curfew.

“After the coronavirus, hopefully we will bring back our family hour discount, it was very popular.”

Over the years the restaurant has tried different things to increase its popularity. In December 2015 Bar 10 was launched.

Later, in 2016 the restaurant went through a rebrand. The manager at the time said they wanted to create a late night bar and dancing venue.

A new cocktail bar, called Trees opened, within the same building as the main restaurant, which still exists.

Hero care workers keeping residents safe in pandemic Protecting the elderly

Workers at a care home are protecting the elderly in the fight against coronavirus.

The staff, from The Rowans in Kirk Ella, have managed to prevent any cases of Covid-19 occurring in the home since the pandemic began in March.

This is an amazing achievement as care homes have been hit extremely badly by coronavirus as residents can be at particularly high risk of dying if they develop severe coronavirus.

Research showed that the Government has failed to fulfil its commitment to test all care home residents in England for coronavirus by “early June”, with many people dying in homes.

But The Rowans managed to stop the spread of the virus through having a constant source of PPE, restricting visits when necessary, regular testing and through the hard work of staff at the home.

Regional manager Steve Fenwick, of the National Care Consortium, which run The Rowans, said: “We found it difficult because of the lack of guidance initially.

“Other homes struggled with getting kits and PPE, but we never fell short of it and this is one of the main reasons that we have remained Covid-free.

“We had regular contact with local authority, CQC and frailty teams and still have throughout.

“There’s been a lot of luck in it as welll, but the home has dealt with it very well.

“In the early days of March and April we had total shut down and carried out a risk assessment, but families could still FaceTime residents, even if they could not come in.

“But, for end of life care, loved ones could still present in the home, unlike at hospital.

“The safety of residents is paramount and we always want to make sure everyone can be as safe as possible. “ Tanzeel Younas, director of the National Care Consortium, which has six homes across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, and runs The Rowans, which houses 50 residents, praised the staff at the home for their hard work.

He said: “During the week of lockdown, we had nominated staff who said they would stay over and distance themselves from their families if it came to it, which was amazing.

“East Yorkshire been a very good local authority and Yvonne Rhodes there has gone above and beyond - we can call her 24/7.

“Within six months guidance has constantly changed, but residents have been happy, as staff are like their family as well.

“As an organisation, we have gone above and beyond.

“At the start of the pandemic we did food shop for staff for free if they were struggling to get food in and give hot takeaways for the staff teams as a nice surprise.

“There has also has been a bonus across the board for all the staff and staff morale is still fantastic.”

These sentiments were echoed by The Rowans manager Karen Harrison, who said she was proud of the team.

She said: “They seem to have all pulled together throughout the pandemic and it has made them a much stronger team.

P&O Ferries boss hits back over Zeebrugge ferry route The boss of P&O Ferries has hit back at claims the company’s owners had given up on the route between Hull and Zeebrugge.

The future of the route is currently being reviewed by P&O with the passenger side of the business understood to be most of risk of being axed.

Last week Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT union, said: “P&O’s owners in Dubai might have thrown the towel in, but the RMT is not giving up on UK seafarers or the future of critical freight and passenger ferries from Hull to the continent.”

But David Stretch, P&O’s chief executive, has hit back over the claims.

He said: “Mick Cash has failed to acknowledge that while some services between Hull and Zeebrugge are under review, we will continue to operate freight services on the route as part of a comprehensive range of services going into Hull and around the UK. “As such, the supply of food, medical supplies and goods will not be slowed nor damaged should passenger services cease to operate.”

“Due to the extended impact of Covid19, P&O Ferries is having to consult on further difficult action in which some jobs could be made redundant - but as a result, thousands more jobs can be saved.

“These necessary steps will ensure we are a more agile business that is better able to give customers the service they want and the value they demand.”

Mr Cash spoke out as union officials met with Labour’s shadow transport team in Hull to dicuss the situation.

However, Mr Stretch said the union boss’ view of P&O’s owners DP World was “unfair”.

He said: “The assertion that DP World ‘has thrown in the towel’ is also unfair and incorrect.

“DP World has been central to the ability of our business to cope during the Covid-19 pandemic and has contributed a nine-figure sum to support P&O Ferries since the beginning of the current crisis.

“Its ongoing support and partnership will be core to our success in future.”

A Bransholme mum says her “beautiful” six-year-old daughter now desperately wants to be white after being told to “bleach herself” by another child at school.

After she was racially abused at school, Aeesha Ali has tragically started rubbing talcum powder into her cheeks at home so her skin appears lighter.

Her devastated mum, Jodie Ward, 27, claims staff at Dorchester Primary School in Bransholme, have not taken her concerns seriously, which has now forced her to make the decision to remove her daughter from the school.

The school, has said it cannot comment on individual cases, but said any concerns are “always investigated.”

The mum of three said: “My daughter is mixed race, last week

she was told by another pupil she needs to bleach herself.

“She was also pulled by her collar on her polo top, to try and choke her.

“I am absolutely fuming because she tries to put talcum powder on herself, she now thinks she has to be white, that’s not the case, my daughter is beautiful.

“She’s very upset, she begs me and cries not to go to school.

“I am going to take my children out to the school when I get chance, but I am not taking her out of education as it’s not her fault.”

Ms Ward says she feels like her concerns have been ignored by the school.

She added: “I spoke to her teacher on the door, she said they would investigate it. Then I phoned up and she turned around and said she had this trouble with her children and said its one of those things.

“It has just gone on and on with

excuses after excuses. In my eyes they are turning a blind eye to it and haven’t stepped up.

“They were oblivious to it. They don’t seem bothered.

“I let it go for a week. Me and my partner had a word with the headteacher and he said [name of child] has got problems at home, I’m not bothered about that, [name of child] is bullying my daughter, everyone has problems at home.

“School are not doing a thing about it and I am just disgusted.

“They are trying to protect this other pupil, but I don’t know why.

“She’s been there since she was at nursery and is now in year one and has never had any problems before.

“I’ve lost all faith in the school.”

Ms Ward, also mum to Rayaan, four and Ethan, two, said she has contacted Humberside Police, but says she was told it is a school issue because it happened on school grounds.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The school is unable to comment on individual cases, however the safety and well-being of all pupils within the school is paramount and underpins everything we do.

“When concerns are raised about any aspect of school these are always thoroughly investigated with appropriate actions implemented if needed.”

Arrests after man attacked in the street Police are searching for a man they believe was attacked in a west Hull street.

A member of the public reported seeing the man being attacked by two men at around 3.20am on Thursday, October 15 in Cranbourne Street, off Spring Bank. The man fled the scene and officers arrested two men on suspicion of assault soon after.

They remain in police custody.

Humberside Police say they are worried for the man’s welfare.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “In the early hours of this morning at around 3.20am, we were called to an incident on Cranbourne Street at the junction with Albany Street in Hull.

“A member of the public reported that they could see a man being attacked by two men “He may have suffered injuries and may need medical attention.”

KFC is winging its way to a car park in Willerby

A new KFC drive-thru is set to be built in the car park of a Willerby shopping centre after plans were given the green light.

Plans approved by East Riding Council on Tuesday show the new restaurant will be in the west corner of Willerby Shopping Park’s car park, below Papa’s Roundabout on the A164.

The drive-thru is expected to create 13 full time jobs as well as several part time roles, but it would see 59 parking spaces lost out of a current 655.

Developers have proposed opening hours of between 10am and 11pm Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 1am Friday and Saturday.

The restaurant is also set to feature outside seating, a bike shelter and seven 820 litre litter bins.

Developers said the 229sq m drive-thru would help meet

customers’ expectations for food and drink venues in “modern” shopping centres.

Developers stated: “This would offer an improved experience at Willerby Shopping Park and enhance the site’s contribution to the local economy.”

Plans for the KFC were approved despite warnings it could make the car park and roads, including the A164, more congested and dangerous.

Councillors said it could also hamper any future works to improve the roads. But the council’s Western Area Planning Committee gave the green light to the restaurant after highways officers said there were currently no plans for such works.

Applicants told the committee the restaurant’s custom would likely come from visitors to the shopping centre and passing trade from nearby roads, meaning traffic changes would be minimal.

It’s a £4.3m job and someone’s got to do it.

Revamping tired-looking Queens Gardens is one of the key elements in the wider Hull: Yorkshire’s Maritime City project.

At the moment, sections of the gardens are fenced off because of safety concerns over the condition of

the some of the original dock walls.

Elsewhere, badly cracked pavements and ponds awash with litter are familiar sights.

Council bosses want the parkland originally created in an old dock to not only reconnect with its seafaring history, but also provide a safe space for the public and for hosting large-scale events.

Now, the authority has invited civil engineering firms to express

an initial interest in carrying out the work. It is hoped the first phase of the tendering process will eventually lead to the drawing up of a six-strong shortlist of firms bidding for the contract.

Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment and regeneration, said: “The structuring of this procurement process allows us to ensure we appoint the best contractor to deliver this key, multi-

million-pound project for the city centre.

“Queens Gardens is an incredible green space in the heart of our city and this refurbishment will celebrate the rich history of Queens Dock while also ensuring that the gardens play an important role in the future landscape and draw of our city centre.”

Firms have until November 23 to submit an expression of interest

in the contract. It is expected the successful contractor will start on site next May with a scheduled completion date of October 2022.

Other schemes in the Maritime City project include the full refurbishment of the Maritime Museum in Queen Victoria Square and a new visitor attraction in the old North End Shipyard where the former Arctic Corsair trawler will be berthed in a dry dock.

Conservationists have warned of the dangers of ocean waste after an Atlantic grey seal was photographed at a breeding ground with fishing debris caught around her neck.

The images were taken on a remote beach in Pembrokeshire.

Mark Underhill, countryside manager for the National Trust, said: “Every day vast quantities of waste is being dumped into the sea and our wildlife is paying the price.”

‘Punish car killers’ The majority of motorists back tougher prison sentences for killer drivers, a new survey suggests.

An RAC poll of 2,800 drivers indicated that 40% believe courts should

be able to hand down life sentences for causing death by dangerous driving.

A further 15% think maximum sentences should at least be increased from the existing level of 14 years.

Paying price of virus A lack of proper economic planning for a pandemic may have resulted in the loss of billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money through fraud and error, MPs have said.

The Commons Public Accounts Committee said it was “very worrying” that HM Revenue and Customs had estimated that for the furlough scheme alone, £3.5 billion of the £35.4 billion paid out by mid-August may have been fraudulently claimed or paid in error.

Rashford’s bid fails

It comes after the Manchester United and England striker, left, launched a petition urging the Government to go further in tackling child hunger.

Going home for Xmas Universities in England could be instructed to switch from face-to-face teaching to online-only classes in early December, while a two-week lockdown will allow students to return home for Christmas, it has been reported.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson previously said plans are being put in place to allow students to return home safely for Christmas, with figures suggesting more than 60 universities have confirmed cases of Covid-19.

Queen back to it – without a mask The Queen was back to business, without a face covering, as she carried out her first public engagement outside of a royal residence since the coronavirus pandemic gripped the nation.

Professor Tim Atkins, who co-ordinated Dstl’s Covid response, replied: “Predicted ma’am, yes.”

The Queen ventured from HMS Bubble – the nickname for her reduced household of staff – for her first external engagement in seven months.

She was on good form as she quipped while signing the guest book: “Well it proves we’ve been here, doesn’t it?”

‘Woman called 999 before lorry deaths’

A member of the public dialled 999 to report an alleged people-smuggling drop a fortnight before the deaths of 39 migrants in Essex, a court has heard.

Gheorghe Nica and Eamonn Harrison are accused of the manslaughter of the group of Vietnamese people who suffocated in a trailer transported from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Purfleet in Essex on October 23 last year.

Along with Christopher Kennedy and Valentin Calota, they were allegedly part of a wider people-smuggling operation behind two earlier successful runs on October 11 and October 18 last year.

The Old Bailey heard how Harrison had transported a trailer-load of migrants to Zeebrugge on October 10 which was picked up by Kennedy on arrival at Purfleet at 7am the next morning.

CCTV footage from Orsett Golf Club allegedly captured Kennedy’s red lorry in a convoy of dark cars, led by suspect Marius Draghici, who remains at large, with Nica, Alexandru Hanga and Gazmir Nuzi following behind.

Local residents Stewart Cox and Marie Andrews witnessed the alleged transfer of up to 20 people from the lorry to the waiting cars.

Giving evidence from behind a screen, Mr Cox said he was “shocked” at what he saw as he left for work and called for Ms Andrews to dial 999. He said a red and white lorry had pulled up with four Mercedes vehicles all facing the same way.

He told jurors: “I noticed there was a lorry out there, which was a very strange time in the morning to be parked out there.

“As I looked I was shocked to see people

jumping out the lorry. I started to panic, a bit shocked to see what I could see.

“I ran to Marie and said, ‘Call the police, it ain’t right’.

“I just see people getting out the back of the lorry with rucksacks. They was running towards the cars to get in the cars.”

The witness said he wanted to take a picture but panicked and saw the number plate on the lorry was covered up.

On hearing of the deaths of 39 people on October 23, 2019 Ms Andrews contacted the police again to remind them of the report she had made on October 11, the court heard.

Nica, 43, of Basildon, Essex, and Harrison, 23, deny the manslaughters of 39 Vietnamese people, aged between 15 and 44.

Harrison, of Mayobridge, Co Down, Northern Ireland, Kennedy, 24, of Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, and Calota, 37, of Birmingham, deny being part of the people-smuggling conspiracy, which Nica has admitted.

Jurors have heard that four others have admitted a role in the people-smuggling ring, including haulier Ronan Hughes and lorry driver Maurice Robinson.

Thailand’s government declared a strict new state of emergency for the capital, a day after a student-led protest against the country’s establishment.

‘Show empathy to slow virus spread’

Clear empathy with the plight of those hardest hit by Covid-19 restrictions is the only way world leaders will persuade their citizens to comply, the World Health Organisation’s regional director for Europe has said.

Dr Hans Kluge warned “pandemic fatigue” risks undermining strategies put in place to try to curb the second wave of the virus.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr Kluge praised French President Emmanuel Macron for telling France’s youth “it is hard to be 20 in the year 2020”.

Dr Kluge said, according to WHO data, 60% of people in the EU member states say they are fed up with lockdown measures.

“There are different strategies but one size does not fit all and that comes back to empathy – it’s very important to show empathy,” he said.

“Instead of pointing the finger, gather the data – this is ongoing in many, many countries – and based on the data, engage the communities,” Dr Kluge said. “Co-create solutions with the voice of the community and particularly influencers.”

He called for extra resources for mental health services and those at risk of becoming “collateral dam-

age” of the virus, including children and those with pre-existing physical conditions.

“We need to take care of our exhausted health and other frontline workers – survey, compensate them (and) act decisively,” he said.

Meanwhile, cinemas have reopened in much of India with mostly old titles on screen, a sign of the country’s efforts to return to normal as the pace of coronavirus infec-

tions slows but also of the roadblocks that remain.

The return to cinemas after seven months of dark screens comes as India is registering the highest number of daily cases globally and is expected to soon top the list worldwide in terms of total number of reported infections, passing the United States.

But trends also suggest the spread is beginning to slow.

Nearly 10,000 cinemas closed in mid-March when the government imposed restrictions to fight the virus, which has torn through India, killing more than 110,000 people.

Cinemas are among the last public places to reopen, a hugely symbolic move in a country known the world over for the lavish productions pumped out by its Bollywood film industry.

Every year, the $2.8 billion (£2.1 billion) juggernaut produces more than 2,000 films that feature complex dance routines, singing and spectacularly large casts.

EU sanctions on Russian officials after Navalny poisoning The European Union has imposed sanctions on six Russian officials and one organisation over the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny with a Soviet-era nerve agent.

The move came a day after Russia’s foreign minister warned

that Moscow might respond with similar measures. The decision was agreed upon among the 27 EU envoys to Brussels.

“The adopted restrictive measures consist of a travel ban to the EU and an asset freeze for individuals, and an asset freeze for

the entity,” the EU said in a statement.

The list includes two high level officials in the presidential executive office, a director of the federal security service and two deputy ministers in the Russian defence ministry. The EU is also

targeting the State Scientific Research Institute for Organic Chemistry and Technology.

Mr Navalny, an anti-corruption investigator and major political opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, fell ill on August 20 during a domestic flight in Russia.

Harris aides test positive for Covid-19

Joe Biden’s presidential campaign said that vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris will suspend in-person events until Monday after two people associated with the campaign tested positive for coronavirus.

The campaign said Mr Biden had no exposure, though he and Ms Harris, above, spent several hours campaigning together in Arizona on October 8.

Ms Harris had been scheduled to travel yesterday to North Carolina for events encouraging voters to cast early ballots.

The campaign told reporters that Ms Harris’ communications director and a flight crew member tested positive after a recent campaign trip.

Attack leaves soldiers dead Somalia’s extremist rebels have killed at least eight soldiers in an ambush in the country’s south, said a military official.

Two other soldiers are missing after an attack on a military convoy travelling between the towns of Afoye and Wanlaweyn in Lower Shabelle region, Colonel Ahmed Hassan said yesterday.

Somalia’s al Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

I noticed a news item recently that described some of the work being undertaken by the Arco Group in helping to rehabilitate former prisoners, by providing employment opportunities.

It appeared that this initiative has been met with significant success, and it must be heartwarming to see that a major local employer is prepared to stick its head above the parapets by doing something that most other firms would probably not dream of doing.

When you add this piece of information to the loyalty that Arco has clearly shown to Hull during its history, culminating in the construction of its new headquarters near Castle Street, it must make the firm highly respected in most people’s minds.

The family of a Beverley man who died after being exposed to asbestos are appealing to his former colleagues for answers.

Roy Exley, 85, was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare cancer which affects the lungs, and died three months later in February last year.

His family, desperate for answers, believe the grandfather of five became exposed to asbestos during his time as a draftsman at ABI Caravans in Beverley from 1974 to 1988.

His daughter, Anne Anderson, said: “We desperately need people who worked on the production lines at ABI Caravans between 1974 and 1988 to confirm if there was asbestos present or not.

“No one should die from working hard.

Whatever information you have, however small it may seem, will be greatly appreciated.”

Thompsons Solicitors, which is supporting the family, say Roy was “a hardworking man” who was “let down by his employers.

Helen Tomlin, who is representing the family, said: “Roy worked at ABI Caravans for a significant period so we’re hopeful someone will recognise him and come forward.

“Sadly, like many others who have also died from mesothelioma, Roy was a hard-working man who only wanted to provide for his family, but was severely let down by his employers.”

Culture website had glitch and caused crashes A dedicated website set up to promote events during Hull’s year as the UK City of Culture wasn’t working properly when it was taken over by the city council.

The 2017 website was meant to be a one-stop shop for listings information and online bookings, bringing together details on everything that was happening across the city’s cultural sector.

However, it suffered a series of major glitches when tickets were released for a selection of one-off events. People were left frustrated when it crashed several times during periods of high demand.

It was also widely criticised for not featuring independent events being run separately from the official 2017 programme while many found the site itself difficult to navigate. The 2017 website has now been closed and replaced with a new site www.visithull.org - which is run by the city council.

A veteran Hull DJ has defended the entertainment industry after the Government urged people to retrain and find new jobs.

Paul Bishoprick has never experienced such silence across the entertainment industry until the height of the coronavirus pandemic hit in March.

Paul, who has been a DJ for three decades, performs sets at Steinbeck and Shaw Pub, and ATIK nightclub.

He said this year has been tougher than ever and he has struggled to adapt to the trend of viral parties, raves, and music sets, which just isn’t the same as it would be on a dancefloor.

He said: “When you see the crowd out there cheering you on, dancing, they come over and shake your hand and appreciate the set, that’s what’s great about it for me.

Tributes paid to the man who brought speed bumps to Hull

Tributes have been paid to former Lord Mayor of Hull John Stanley who has died after an illness.

Mr Stanley was first elected to Hull City Council as a Labour councillor in 1972.

He served on the authority until 2003 and was Lord Mayor in 1989.

He was later made an honorary alderman and remained a familiar figure at the Guildhall, regularly attending full council meetings as well as the counts in local and general elections.

Away from politics, he worked as an electrician at Reckitts and as a deputy housing manager at the former Housemartin Housing

Association. He also served as a magistrate for many years in Hull.

Current Lord Mayor Steve Wilson said: “I am very saddened to hear the death of John Stanley.

He was a legend in these parts.

“John was a very generous man, a hard-working campaigner and councillor.

“I recently awarded him a civic crown for his years of service to the Lord Mayor’s charities.

“My thoughts are with Ann, his devoted wife”.

During his council career, Mr Stanley became chairman of the authority’s technical services committee where he was one of the first politicians in Hull to

actively promote cycling as an alternative to motoring, introduced Hull’s first ever automatic public toilet and spearheaded the roll-out of speed bumps and 20mph zones across the city.

He was also a prominent figure in the East Hull Labour Party, working behind-the-scenes on all of John Prescott’s general election campaigns.

College working to improve after damning report Measures have been taken

Hull College is in a stronger position after a raft of measures were brought in to make “urgent improvements” requested by government inspectors, its temporary chief executive has said.

The college’s interim chief executive Tony Lewin said feedback had been positive on measures taken since the Department for Education’s Further Education Commissioner’s inspections.

Mr Lewin, who took up his post in July, added the college bore no resemblance to the one described in the report.

Inspections in October and November last year, launched after a whistle blower’s complaint with findings published on Friday, October 9 following delays due to coronavirus, found “significant shortcomings”.

The resulting report stated satisfaction among students aged between 16 and 18 was “very low”, with falling enrolment and attendance placing further pressure on already strained finances.

Officials reported “significant” cash flow shortages, “ineffective” governance, low staff morale and a lack of trust between them and management.

Mr Lewin said efforts undertaken over “a short space of time” to reverse the college’s fortunes have been well -received by officials.

He and other members of the college’s leadership added recruitment of a new principal, delayed due to coronavirus, was now due to be completed in November.

The interim chief executive said: “As a result of the report, the team here have been working to put in all the improvements necessary raise the quality of students’ experiences.

“I’ve been on board here since July and subsequently we’ve had positive feedback on the improvements we’ve made.

“Our work is also reflected in positive feedback from our learners and we’re now aiming to becoming an outstanding college.

“As someone who’s come to the college recently, it’s very difficult to recognise it now after reading the report.

“We’re in a strong financial position now, our current rating according to the Further Education Commission’s criteria is good and healthy.”

He added: “We’ve also made sure we get good at the basics. We’ve put our timetables right so learning is continuous and students no longer have three hour gaps between lessons.

“We recognise that we’re still not where we want to be, but we’re in a stronger position than when the report was produced.

“The college has gone through a turbulent time, through any period of change there will be a degree of anxiety and unsettledness and the report reflected that.

“I can’t comment on the college before I arrived, but I can understand how people might have felt they were not aware of everything they needed to be aware of.

“We’ve made our structure less hierarchical and bureaucratic into something more approachable.

“We all recognise that it will take some time to embrace these changes and developments.

“But the only way to really sense the improvement is to come and walk around and feel the vibes, everyone is getting on with their jobs and they’re being positive and are talking about the future.”

Vice principal Liz Winn said efforts to improve staff well being and learners’ experience since was evident in the college’s “positive environment”.

“I’ve been here since last October and from my experience I’d say there’s been significant changes, the environment is more positive and staff morale is higher,” she said.

“Support for learners during lockdown has been fantastic, we delivered laptops to students’ homes and sent out learner packs.”

WHEN mum-of-two Jade Ellis died suddenly at the end of March, aged just 36 – and at the height of the Covid-19 lockdown – her family and friends were left shocked and devastated.

Hull City Council’s public health and protection team is investigating a “small” number of cases of coronavirus at a Hull bakery, it has been confirmed.

The number of confirmed cases in employees at the BBF Ltd site in Sutton Fields, north Hull, is said to be “low”, but work is “ongoing” to establish whether the cases are “directly linked to workplace transmission”.

The team is reportedly working closely with the business and Public Health England and other organisations to establish “what has happened” and “provide any necessary support in putting in place additional measures to mitigate spread of the virus”.

The Mail has been told those affected have been advised to self-isolate and anyone who has been in contact with them will have been notified by Test and Trace and provided with the latest guidance.

It comes after a worker raised concerns this week.

“One worker is rumoured to be in hospital,” they alleged. “Some are not taking Covid-19 precautions seriously.

“One took her mask down to cough and didn’t even shield her mouth.”

But Julia Weldon, director of Public Health at Hull City Council, said the council is working with the business and is investigating a “small number of cases” and said work is ongoing to establish whether the cases are directly linked to workplace transmission.

“Hull City Council’s public health and protection team is investigating a small number of cases of Coronavirus at BBF, Hull,” she said.

“While the number of confirmed cases in employees is low, work is ongoing to establish whether these are directly linked to workplace transmission, as this may not be the case.

“All those affected have been advised to self-isolate and anyone who has been in contact with them will have been notified by Test and Trace and provided with the latest guidance.

“Cases locally are rising and we must all continue to adhere to guidelines on social distancing, wash hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water and isolate immediately if they have Coronavirus symptoms or are asked to

The statement comes after the Mail reported how an outbreak had occurred at the Hull bakery after several factory workers tested positive.

At the time, staff at the BBF Ltd site in Sutton Fields feared they were working alongside colleagues who had tested positive for Covid-19.

One employee said he tried to have this confirmed by management, but was left frustrated after being told they were not allowed to discuss it.

Speaking at the time, the 37-year-old, who works as a hygiene operative, said: “We went in yesterday and heard there was a couple of cases.

“We have been going to management asking if it is true and all they say is that they are not allowed to discuss it.”

“It was a significant logistical issue because you only have a small number of specialist rooms.

“You have to work out how to keep students in bubbles and we did this by keeping them in their year groups. It was very challenging.

“We had to assign specialist classrooms to each year groups, specialist classrooms then have to

be booked by the class teacher and, while this creates logistical issues, it does mean that students can continue to experience that rich mixture of both practical and theoretical lessons.”

“We had to think about the logistics of the school day, which staircases do they use, can they use the same staircase and the answer is no as it’s a cross contamination of bubbles.

“We have three timings for the school day, we use three different sets of staircases to make sure we can clean in between to make sure they don’t bump into each other.

“The leadership team have been really open and asked staff to tell them what has worked and what hasn’t, and we’ve constantly adapted.

“We spent quite a bit of time sending letters to parents, we produced a reopening plan so they had a clear idea of what would happen.”

Mr Capper said new ways of working which have been brought in might now be here to stay.

He added: “Some of the ways we have been working have benefited the reintegration back into school.

“Year 7, for example, have been able to get to know each other in their own specified area without the usual hustle and bustle of life in a pre-pandemic secondary school.”

Mr Capper is now looking forward to reopening the school again on Monday, October 19, and thanked the parents for their “excellent” return and his staff for always going the extra mile.

A pupil in Year 9 at Kingswood Academy has tested positive for Covid-19, the school has confirmed.

In a letter dated Wednesday, October 14, the school in Wawne Road said a “small number” of Year 9 children “identified as close contacts” have been forced to selfisolate.

The school said all other pupils are required to continue to come to school “as normal”.

A letter sent to a parent and seen by the Mail read: “I am writing to let you know that we have been informed that one pupil in Year 9 at Kingswood Academy has tested positive for Covid-19.

“In line with Department for Education (DfE), Public Health England (PHE) and National Health Service (NHS) guidance, we have performed a track and trace and a small number of Year 9 children identified as close contacts have been informed to self-isolate until October 24, 2020.

“Anyone identified as being a close contact has been asked to self-isolate until October 24, 2020, returning to school on November 2, 2020, following the half-term break and they received a separate letter informing them of this coronavirus (Covid-19): guidance - Gov.uk “All other pupils are required to continue to come to school as normal.”

The letter then explains who the government has “defined” as a “close contact”.

The letter continued: “We will keep all parents updated and informed on any further developments.”

The school said it was taking the following precautionary measures.

“All pupils identified as a close contact will be asked to stay home and self-isolate until October 24, 2020, with the recommendation of having a test booked if they develop symptoms,” it said.

“Current guidance is that there is no requirements to get a test if an individual has no symptoms.

“We have been advised that currently other members of the household, including siblings do not need to self-isolate or test unless they develop symptoms because they are a “contact of a contact”.”

Appeal to find dog owners after cat is killed in savage attack A pet charity is trying to track down the owners of a dog which savaged and killed a cat in Hull.

A young mum and her child were left horrified after witnessing what is thought to be a brindle Staffordshire bull terrier chase down the cat.

The attack happened on a cycle track running off St Clement’s Place, off Beverley Road, on Tuesday afternoon. There are fears the animal, which was not on a lead, could go on to attack other dogs and even hurt a child.

Now, Not Just Pets Rescue is calling for anyone who may have CCTV footage of the attack to come forward.

Amy Donoghue, who runs the charity, said: “A dog killing cat in itself isn’t a crime, but if the dog is deemed out of control then that is an offence. We haven’t gone to the police or the RSPCA as there is nothing they can do unless we have more evidence”.

Plans for ‘awful little boxes’ refused for development village rallies to block new build on flood risk land

Councillors have blocked plans for nine new homes in Cottingham after one said they looked like “awful little boxes”.

East Riding Council’s Western Area Planning Committee refused plans for the homes, in Dunswell Road, after Councillor Ros Jump claimed the developer was motivated by “greed”.

The committee member and Cottingham North ward member, who called the plans before councillors, added they were “totally out of character” and would be on land at risk of flooding.

Council officers had also recommended the plans be refused due to it being outside Cottingham’s designated development area.

Cottingham Parish Council also opposed the plans, but no other public objections were received, while two comments in support were submitted.

Applicant Martin Wild, who also owns the site, told councillors the

affordable homes would replace what was effectively brownfield land. Plans would have seen offices and industrial buildings on land east of Oak Villa torn down to make way for the homes.

Mr Wild said: “Although parts of the site are in flood risk, zones two and three, these areas would be used for parking.

“A survey has been undertaken which also questions why the land varies between risk zones.

“These houses would not make matters worse, we’ve received comments supporting the removal of the industrial units.

“I believe they would help Cottingham meet its housing requirements, a number of charities have already expressed an interest in taking them on.

“The homes would be an asset to Cottingham, they would not be out of the reach of young families unlike some executive homes.”

But Mrs Jump said there were already affordable homes close to the proposed site.

not be developed for these awful little boxes. They’re totally out of character with the area and they’re below road level quite considerably, the water drains down to the site.

“It’s not easy to develop that land sustainably and any development should enhance facilities in the area not just the site itself.

“I’m very much against this and so is the parish council, this is just greed.”

Committee member Councillor Nick Coultish said proposals to build affordable homes were good, but added he opposed the plans because of the flood risk.

Councillor Richard Meredith, added: “It looks like a barracks.”

Police issue Rule of Six warning to youths Humberside Police have spoken to a “large” group of youths in Kingswood on Wednesday 14, about Covid-19 guidelines.

Humberside Police tweeted to say there had been a police patrol via push bike around the village green in Kingswood due to reports of antisocial behaviour.

What the Spice Girls did is part of history...

M

elanie C has been on quite a journey in recent years. In the last decade, the singer has raised a daughter through her formative years, reformed the Spice Girls for a second time, and become a vocal advocate for LGBT rights.

It’s been a period of positive change, she explains over video call from her Hampstead home, culminating in this – her self-titled eighth album.

“I have been on this voyage of self-discovery,” she says, perched on her sofa. “I think a lot of the fans out there have probably felt that and probably a lot of the public as well.

“Knowing me from the Spice Girls and being very young coming into the public eye, I got a little bit confused along the way.

“I was always searching, I think like so many of us do. We are trying to find ourselves, trying to figure out who we want to be.

“We are so bombarded with these expectations and after all of these experiences and years and albums and everything I have done.”

Melanie Jayne Chisholm, 46, was born in Whiston, Merseyside, but raised in Widnes, Cheshire.

She has operated under a number of names across her 25 years in showbusiness – Melanie C, Mel C, Sporty Spice. Her latest record is a reflective effort reminiscent of Madonna or Robyn’s timeless brand of disco heartbreak.

The album, she says, could not have happened without the Spice Girls’ reunion last year. The girl band – minus Victoria Beckham – got back together for a string of tour dates across the UK and Ireland.

“Being back on stage with the Spice Girls last year was almost like...” she says before trailing off.

“I could just see everything so clearly. It made me so reflective.

“And leading up to those shows I’d been nervous. It’s a long time since I

SERPENTINE PRISON MATT BERNINGER HHHHH The National singer Matt Berninger’s debut is a quiet triumph, produced impeccably by Booker T Jones, frontman of Booker T & The MGs. Opening track My Eyes Are T-Shirts (“they’re so easy to read”) comes with his distinctive baritone, while the album features washes of organ on One More Second, mournful strings on Collar Of Your Shirt and licks of brass on All For Nothing and Take Me Out Of Town. The title track refers to a sewer pipe that drains into the ocean near LA’s international airport and has a cage on top to prevent people getting into the water. It shows Berninger’s penchant for finding beauty in the mundane.

Serpentine Prison’s understated qualities deserve a wide audience.

Melanie C talks to Alex Green about learning to love Sporty Spice again, motherhood and Glastonbury had been on stage with the girls.

“We were all older. We have done so many different things. And I was like, ‘Can I become Sporty Spice?’

Is it within me to still do that?’

“Really quickly I realised that I don’t become her, I am her.”

Those performances also helped her confront her tougher times in the band. A damaging pattern of behaviour ultimately led to anorexia, binge-eating and a diagnosis of depression. She recalls the epiphany which grew each night on stage last year as the band played to sold-out stadiums.

“Within that moment of realising how lucky we had been and celebrating our success, I just started to feel this pride in myself.

“I started to unfold into this acceptance of not only the amazing things I have been a part of, but also the struggles. Instead of having regrets for those times, just being proud I have overcome them and lived to tell the tale.”

Melanie C is apologetic when she breaks off our conversation briefly to text her 11-year-old daughter, Scarlet. “She’s asking about a bl***y sleepover,” she laughs.

This reappraisal of the Spice Girls’ legacy has left her with a pragmatic approach to the capricious nature of fame.

“When it was all happening we were so young,” she recalls.

“We were caught up in the whole experience, which was amazing but so surreal. We couldn’t really take it in. Then, as years go by, it’s interesting about the general feeling you have in the media.

“Sometimes you fall out of favour, you come back into favour.

“Sometimes, us girls, maybe it is a personal thing, but you feel like you are not relevant any more. Last year made me realise that what we did is part of history. It’s an incredible legacy that we are leaving.

FAKE IT FLOWERS BEABADOOBEE HHHHH Turn-of-themillennium emo pop might not quite be the flavour of the month right now, but Beabadoobee – real name Beatrice Laus – somehow carries it off in a way that feels totally at home 20 years on. And though the tweeness might feel a little on-the-nose at points, Yoshimi, Forest, Magdalene presents a terrific slice of saccharine art rock with hints at an even more interesting future.

ALBUM NO. 8 KATIE MELUA HHHHH Katie Melua has quietly been serving up top 10 hits for over a decade. This – if it is a sign of anything – points towards her knack for cutting through passing trends with artful song-writing and occasional sonic experimentation.

The British-Georgian has been clear this is not a divorce album – coming as it does shortly after her split from World Superbike racer and musician James Toseland. But on Album No. 8, love is both the question and answer.

Inspired by folk greats like Bob Dylan, Album No. 8 features some fine, old-fashioned song-writing.

Film-maker Nathan Grossman claims to have the answers in his polished

Greta Thunberg documentary, which follows the teenager over the course of 12 months when her life became something akin to a blockbuster film.

“A very surreal movie because the plot would be so unlikely,” quips Greta in voiceover.

Slickly assembled and politely intrusive, I Am Greta isn’t the warts’n’all portrait that the title might suggest but an affecting and reverential study of a girl with Asperger

syndrome, rudely dismissed by one American news commentator as “a mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and the media”.

Early footage from Stockholm in August 2018, before the speech, shows Greta sitting on the pavement opposite the parliament building with a handmade sign – School Strike For Climate – and pamphlets detailing her cause.

The California office is managed by Gigi Cutler (Kate Bosworth) and she tries to buy off Fred. However, he refuses the settlement and hires lawyer Ralph Wegis (Martin Sheen) to publicly shame Royal Shore Oil. Inspired by real-life cases of unlined wastewater ponds in California, The Devil Has A Name is an uneven courtroom drama.

completely different,” she laments as other schoolchildren join her movement, giving birth to the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.

Scenes between Greta and her omnipresent father Svante are the most touching, particularly instances when he pleads with her to make time in their gruelling schedule to eat.

She repeatedly refuses, determined to share her message as loudly as possible.

“Once the climate crisis has gotten your attention, you can’t look away,” she argues.

Greta is clearly uncomfortable with the prospect of heightened media interest.

“No one will know who you are,” Svante assures his daughter as they leave the conference centre in Poland.

“That’s nice,” she replies sweetly, oblivious to the global media storm that will quickly engulf them both.

For the most part, Grossman’s film retains a respectful distance with brief glimpses of Greta’s school graduation ceremony and video calls to her mother.

One of the few occasions when reality bites takes place on a sailing yacht in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean as Greta records an audio diary during her emissions-free journey from Portsmouth to New York.

“I don’t want to have to do all this,” she tearfully confides as waves crash against the monohull.

“It’s too much for me.”

For those few seconds, Greta is visible in her truest and most relatable form: a frightened girl at the mercy of a natural world she hopes to protect, who simply wants to be at home with her dogs Moses and Roxy.

So, who is Greta Thunberg? I’m still not sure.

An emotionally conflicted girl comes of age 150 million kilometres from Earth in Glen Keane and John Kahrs’ computer-animated odyssey.

Over The Moon teaches heavy-handed lessons about embracing the future through the eyes of a teenager, who refuses to accept that anyone could replace her late mother.

The film, which is immersed in Chinese culture, follows 13-year-old Fei Fei (voiced by Cathy Ang). She was raised by her mother (Ruthie Ann Miles) and father (John Cho) on the legend of Moon goddess Chang’e (Phillipa Soo), who sacrificed her love for mortal warrior Houyi (Conrad Ricamora) to live forever in the night sky.

Fei Fei clings onto this story and a silk scarf adorned with the goddess’ likeness as memories of her late mother.

Four years after the heartbreaking loss, the teen’s widowed father introduces his girlfriend, Mrs Zhong (Sandra Oh). Fei Fei reacts angrily to the prospect of another woman invading their home.

She resolves to remind her father of the love he lost by building a rocket ship to the Moon to prove Chang’e exists.

Mrs Zhong’s eight-year-old son, Chin (Robert G Chiu) is an unwelcome stowaway on the interstellar mission.

The children blast off to the colour-saturated kingdom of Lunaria, where they encounter a loveable creature named Gobi (Ken Jeong), who helps the pair to realise the value of teamwork.

SCREEN sHOTS ‘I We’re doing our best to recreate the movie magic we’ve missed this year ’ve come as a deckchair,” declares comedian Alan Carr triumphantly.

It’s exactly the kind of exuberant response you’d expect from the Chatty Man host, who’s in the midst of identifying his favourite moments from the forthcoming series of Sky One’s There’s Something About Movies.

“What about E.T., that look... I was on my knees for, like, 10 hours, shuffling,” recounts Alan, 44.

“Normally the outfits are really amazing, but it looked like my head coming out of a cat’s a**s.”

Entering its third series, the hit comedy show sees Alan joined by his two returning team captains, screenwriter and Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders and Bad Omens actor Michael Sheen.

“Oh my God, E.T... that was honestly tragic,” interjects Jennifer, 62. “It was like someone had skinned a Teletubby.”

Between the show’s witty sketches and celebrity panellists, There’s Something About Movies has cemented itself as a comedy staple, bound together with the assistance of British comedian Tom Allen.

But as the hit series returns to our screens, there’s no escaping the impact Covid has had on the show’s forthcoming instalment.

“It is all health and safety,” remarks Alan. “They genuinely do check you with a two-metre stick so we are toeing the line when it comes to Covid... The desks have been made so large.”

“There is a lot of, ‘What did you say?’ It’s like the whispering gallery at St Paul’s. I can hear Tom slagging me off to Jennifer, but I can’t hear her answers.”

It’s a laugh-a-minute line-up that makes light work of additional safety measures, despite the intrusive nature of regular swab testing.

“Every second show, a very heavy-handed girl does stick a swab up your nose – and you’ve had it, Jennifer, you cried – and then they swab the back of your tongue,” recounts Alan.

“It’s not a swab though, is it?” interjects Jennifer.

“They pretend it’s a swab. It’s a small Brillo pad on the end of a stick.

Like a little scrubbing brush, it’s not a plain swab. Scouring of your nostrils.”

Blending classic film trivia with dramatic comedy re-enactments of some of cinema’s greatest scenes – including The Wizard Of Oz, The Wolf Of Wall Street and Toy Story – the show’s upbeat absurdity is precisely what a pandemic calls for.

“Although going to the cinema seems like a distant memory, we will be doing our best to recreate some of the movie magic that we’ve all been missing this summer,” says Alan optimistically.

And with a host of renowned names joining the panel for series three, you can expect appearances from Gemma Arterton, Stephen Graham, Nick Frost, Mo Gilligan and Rob Beckett, to name but a few.

“Everyone’s been brilliant. They’ve all told great stories,” says Michael, 51.

“I quite enjoyed Gemma Arterton talking about her kiss with Jake Gyllenhaal,” continues Alan.

You know, Stephen Graham will talk about Robert De Niro and filming The Irishman and Al Pacino, Garcia and stuff.

“So you get laughs and you get these amazing A-list stories that sometimes you don’t hear on a chat show,” says Alan.

One such A-list story involves series three panellist and Shaun Of The Dead star Nick Frost.

“Nick Frost’s story. Oh, my God. One of the most extraordinary stories I think anyone has ever heard,” declares Michael triumphantly.

“I think it must have been for Spaced – or Hot Fuzz? He didn’t say that, but I think it was Spaced.”

“He wanted to be able to put a gun together, blindfolded,” continues Tom, “and so, he took the prop gun home to practise but not realising that – well, I don’t know if I should spoil the story...”

Spoilers aside, there’s plenty for viewers to look forward to in the new series of There’s Something About Movies, including a thoroughly festive Christmas Special, which marks a first for the comedy show.

Alan Carr slips into something less comfortable for a starring role as E.T. Absolutely Fabulous reunion (of sorts), as actress Joanna Lumley makes a memorable guest debut in the final episode of the series.

“Jennifer’s story about going through an airport with Joanna Lumley – that was, I think, the highlight,” recounts Michael.

“Men in hats coming up to Joanna Lumley all the time...” elaborates Tom. The tale the pair are referring to involves the level of recognition Joanna receives when out in public and the grace with which she deals with being accosted by complete strangers.

“I swear to God it happens every time you’re with her – an old gentleman will come out of the woodwork anywhere in the world...

Always in red cords, a blazer and a panama hat!” continues Jennifer. “‘Joanna, how are you, my dear?”’ projects Jennifer in a mocking voice.

“And then of course she’s never met them in her life, never. There are hundreds, just lying in wait wherever she goes.”

The ease with which the quartet jest and chat is a key part of There’s Something About Movies’ allure.

And now, without a live studio audience to interact with due to social distancing restrictions, the comedians’ on-screen chemistry is more important than ever.

“We’re always gonna laugh at each other because we find each other funny,” says Alan of the show.

“I know some shows have really suffered not having an audience but we do genuinely get on. So, we create a really warm, lovely vibe. And I’m sort of hoping that they carry on without the audience, I just love it.

“And do you know what – when you think we’ve all been away with lockdown, this is just the perfect show to ease yourself in because it’s a lot of fun, it’s dressing up, it’s being silly.”

jack and ozzy went looking for the loch ness monster Sharon, Jack and Ozzy Osbourne are discussing whether Bigfoot is reality or fiction.

Jack, son of musician Ozzy and Sharon, has just shown them footage he says is “considered some of the most authentic”, that shows what many have debated is or isn’t the folkloric creature shown on a grainy black and white screen moving across a landscape.

It is all part of their new Really TV series titled The Osbournes Want To Believe, which sees Jack trying to talk his famous parents into considering there may be some truth in supernatural activity.

The family is no stranger to being on TV together, having been one of the pioneers of reality TV with MTV series The Osbournes in 2002, which also featured daughter Kelly.

Despite living in the US, the family still has strong roots in the UK, and still owns property here.

“We miss it terribly,” Sharon says.“We still have our house there, it’s just that we haven’t been over for a while but we miss the UK terribly.

“And since you can’t go you want to go more. We were meant to be there all of August, and for Christmas and of course it didn’t pan out.”

The family is among millions staying put due to coronavirus travel restrictions. But luckily, after rigorous testing and putting strict safety measures in place, they were able to film the series, with a minimal crew.

“We were super cautious and tested everyone a day or two before we started filming and just cranked it out,” says Jack.

Mikey Lewis added another string to his bow in Hull KR’s win over Salford Red Devils on Tuesday.

The teenager started at full-back at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and played a key role, scoring two tries and injecting life into a struggling side.

It was only Lewis’ sixth first-team appearance, with the rest coming in his natural position in the halves.

Adam Quinlan and Will Dagger will battle it out for the full-back position in 2021, but head coach Tony Smith would have no hesitation in playing Lewis there again.

Hull derby decision a slap in the face it’s time for common sense

WHEN the 2020 Super League fixtures were released last November, three dates leapt off the page for fans of the two Hull clubs.

The great rivals were scheduled to meet in February, on Good Friday in April and towards the end of the season in August.

Hull FC claimed the bragging rights at the KCOM Stadium in round two but little over a month later rugby league was shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

FC lost their second home derby when Super League was cut to 22 rounds, which became 20 after Toronto Wolfpack pulled out.

The clash at Craven Park was rescheduled for the end of October in the hope that fans would be able to attend, only for the government

to delay the return of spectators to stadiums.

Supporters on both sides of the city had just come to terms with not being able to attend the 237th Hull derby when they learned that the fixture would be played at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens.

Not only have the two clubs already clocked up more miles than any of their English rivals since the restart, it means a trip from a tier 1 region to tier 3 at a time when coronavirus cases are continuing to rise.

There is guidance against travelling in and out of areas such as St Helens yet within a day of the introduction of the three-tier system one of the hardest-hit locations was given another round of fixtures.

Super League has said the latest government recommendations don’t apply because the Totally Wicked Stadium is a bio-secure venue but it is not only the teams

that are travelling to these locations.

The sensible move would have been to take games away from the North West while there is so much scrutiny, with Headingley and the John Smith’s Stadium among the other available venues.

Instead it is yet another journey across the Pennines for Hull KR and FC, a 250-mile round trip to play a match against the next-door neighbour.

Guiding the sport through a global pandemic is a thankless task but the powers that be are not doing themselves any favours.

Rovers have not been on Sky Sports for weeks and are being given midweek afternoon slots at a time when the game should be doing all it can to keep fans onside.

The Black and Whites, meanwhile, went out of their way to ensure Super League fulfilled its obligations last week by stepping in to face Leeds

Rhinos, to their detriment.

While arranging the derby for St Helens is not a big deal on the face of it - given supporters can’t attend - it is another slap in the face for the people who will be asked to help get the sport back on its feet.

Tigers given green light to travel to KCOM

Castleford Tigers have been given the green light to play against Hull FC this weekend after receiving the all-clear in their latest round of coronavirus testing.

The Tigers were forced to pull out of their scheduled clash with Leeds Rhinos a week ago after three players tested positive for the virus and a further six were asked to self-isolate, meaning they didn’t have the numbers available to take on the Rhinos at Headingley.

Fortunately, no positive tests have been returned by players or coaching staff this week after being tested on a number of occasions.

As such, the Tigers will travel to the KCOM Stadium on Sunday and they’ll hope to have a number of those players affected available once more after completing their isolation period.

Of course, those players won’t have been able to train this week, but Daryl Powell will look to use those available to supplement his threadbare squad.

“We have never had anything like this,” Powell said.

“This is the first time that any of us have had to deal with anything like this. It is unprecedented across rugby league.”

FC have played twice since meeting the Tigers at Wheldon Road earlier this month. They were the side asked to fill in for Castleford against Leeds with less than 24 hours’ notice, a game they were convincingly second best in.

But they come into the clash at the KCOM Stadium on the back of a narrow, but morale-boosting, 18-16 win over Huddersfield Giants on Tuesday night.

Last believes that win sets them up perfectly for the challenge on Sunday, but the interim head coach also hopes to welcome a number of players back into contention, with the possibility of Albert Kelly and Manu Ma’u returning to freshen up his side.

ureta Faraimo must have been the most relieved man in the North West when he touched down to score in the corner at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Tuesday night.

There was no horrendous error leading to a try or poor display which could have cost his side.

It wasn’t the relief from guilt Faraimo was feeling.

When you’re a winger paid, among other things, to put the ball over the whitewash each week, failing to do that all season can weigh heavily on your mind.

As such, painted on his face was the look of sheer delight when he broke his duck for the season in the second half of Hull FC’s tense 18-16 win over Huddersfield Giants.

Given his remarkable tryscoring record in his first two years at the club, racking up 30 tries in 54 games in all competitions, it’s hard to believe that he had drawn a blank up until this week.

In fact, 14 months had passed since he last felt that scoring feeling, but as the ball came to him on the left edge and the try line opened up, he gratefully dived over in the corner to end his dry spell.

It’s perhaps testament to his performances since the season restart, though, that his barren run wasn’t being spoken about.

All wingers judge themselves on the tries they score and they’re generally happiest and spoken about most when they’re finishing with regularity.

The competition for places is fierce on the wing for the Black and Whites as Adam Swift prepares to return from injury and with Naulago and Mahe Fonua also battling it out for spots in the side, Faraimo knows he has to remain on top of his game.

Of course, if he can find form in attacking areas that will help, but right now Faraimo deserves his spot and it bodes well for him moving into 2021.

Hectic schedule is chance for City to make a statement

ull City’s 4-1 thumping at Fleetwood Town on Friday night didn’t do too much damage to their league position, though it may well have knocked confidence.

Confidence which has, understandably, been a great source of conversation in recent weeks and the response Grant McCann can garner at Rochdale will be fascinating to see.

Few saw the manner of that reverse coming, especially with the scores level at 1-1 going into half-time at Highbury.

But, alas, City started the second half in disastrous fashion, conceding just two minutes in following a sloppy cross-field ball from George Honeyman, a mistake which became the epitaph for the evening thereafter.

They’ve also had plenty of time to stew on that defeat and prepare for the busy schedule which faces them between now and Christmas.

In fact, starting with Saturday’s visit to Rochdale, City will have just two free midweeks as it stands before Christmas, though that is assuming there will be no fixture cancellations such as the one we saw with Grimsby.

Based on the current schedule, City will play 14 games from the beginning of November through to January 2 – an unforgiving run but also, one which presents the chance to head into the New Year in fine fettle and confidence sky high.

Anyway, let’s not look too far ahead for now and just focus on the games between now and Halloween …

Rochdale (A) – Saturday, October 17 Brian-Barry Murphy’s Dale have won just once in their opening five league games, and sit 18th in League One. This will be City’s first visit to Spotland in the league since 2003 when the Tigers were 2-0 winners.

Last term, Dale had the third-worst home record in the division, winning just five of their 16 encounters before the season was curtailed, losing seven - and you feel if they’re to survive this time around, it will be on home soil where they pick up the lions share of their points.

Boss Grant McCann will be desperate to see his side return to winning ways after the shocking second half display at Fleetwood, and prove that it was merely a one-off and not something more sinister.

■■Prediction: Rochdale 1-2 City

AFC Wimbledon (H) – Tuesday, October 20 Like Fleetwood, this season of firsts will see the Tigers come up against AFC Wimbledon for the first time, in fact, not since April 1986 have City faced any side from that part of south London.

The Dons have started the season in solid fashion, winning two, drawing two and losing just one of their opening five.

Wimbledon’s away record last season was not great, in truth, 19th best to be precise with the Wombles winning just three out of 17 on the road, with 12 defeats.

And at the KCOM Stadium, while you wouldn’t rule out an upset, this surely has to be the sort of game City need to file into the category of ‘home banker’ if they’re to have any aspirations of promotion.

Hull City Welcome boost for City Hull City have received a boost as they look to return to winning ways at Rochdale on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers will welcome back Josh Magennis, pictured, and Callum Jones, both of whom have been away on international duty, while striker Tom Eaves and captain Richie Smallwood have trained throughout the week and are in contention for the trip to Spotland.

City will be desperate to move on from last Friday night’s second half shocker at Fleetwood Town, which saw them concede three times to lose 4-1, their first defeat of the league campaign.

Striker Magennis played in both of Northern Ireland’s games during the break, including Wednesday night’s 1-0 Nations League defeat in Norway, while Callum Jones came off the bench to make his debut for Wales’ Under-20s in a 2-0 defeat against England on Tuesday.

Smallwood has been out of action since picking up an injury before the victory at Northampton, while Eaves hasn’t featured since the Carabao Cup win at Sunderland, but James Scott remains sidelined with an ankle problem.

“We go into the Rochdale game with a healthier looking squad,” McCann said.

“Tom Eaves and Richie Smallwood have trained. Josh Magennis and Callum Jones are back from international duty.

“The only player missing is James Scott.”

Peterborough United (H) – Saturday, October 24 Arguably the Tigers’ toughest test of the season so far will arrive later in the month when Darren Ferguson’s Posh arrive at the KCOM. While City will likely start as favourites given the clash is on home soil, Posh are one of the fancied sides in League One again this season, but they’ll have to improve their away record of last term, winning five of 18.

Ferguson’s men, as it stands, are three points behind the Tigers after the first five and you’d expect them to be in and around the promotion mix, so taking points off their visitors will be an important step.

The pair last met at the KCOM Stadium in the Championship just eight years ago, with Posh running out shock 3-1 winners courtesy of an Emile Sinclair hat-trick.

Not wishing to curse this one, but there will (almost certainly) be goals.

■■Prediction: City 2-2 Peterborough

Bristol Rovers (A) – Tuesday, October 27 A hefty midweek trip is awaiting City late in the month and one which will see the Tigers visit the Memorial Stadium for the first time since losing 2-1 there in 2003.

This time around, Rovers, like Wimbledon, have started the season in

solid fashion, winning two of their five games, though The Gas do appear to have a propensity for conceding – eight already.

Their home form last season reflected their 14th placed finish, winning seven of their 18 home games.

Once again, on a tight, cramped pitch, City will have a tough test against a side keen to take one of the biggest scalps of the campaign.

■■Prediction: Bristol Rovers 1-1 City

Swindon Town (A) – Saturday, October 31 Here’s hoping it won’t be a frightening evening in Wiltshire for McCann’s men – sorry, couldn’t resist the cheap Halloween reference.

Last season’s League Two winners,

unsurprisingly, had one of the best home records in the division, winning 13 of their 19 games at the County Ground and again this term, they’ve started well with two wins from three.

Expect City to be provided with a thorough examination of their credentials, much more like against Plymouth compared to Gillingham.

The Robins will be relishing this test and there’s little doubt that if City are to win a first game at Town since 1990, they’ll have to deliver a resilient display.

Unfortunately, I think Richie Wellen’s men will get one over on McCanns men.

■■Prediction: Swindon 2-1 City

Points return: Eight from a possible 15 points

Joey Barton targeted Hull City’s defence as a source of weakness, as he planned for last Friday’s visit of the Tigers.

City came into the game with four straight wins in their opening four games of the League One season, and hadn’t conceded a goal.

Those records were emphatically turned on their heads, however, with Barton’s Cod Army romping to a 4-1 victory after a scintillating second half display in scenes reminiscent of City’s defensive problems last season.

Grant McCann’s Tigers were, at times, struggling to stay off the ropes with two-goal hero Harvey Saunders causing havoc, and Barton praised the 21-year-old, before highlighting what he thought Joey Barton was City’s biggest weakness.

“He’d scored a really good goal to get us back in the game at Rochdale and followed that up with three great finishes against Villa - right foot, left foot and header, a kind of perfect hat-trick,” Barton said.

“When we analysed the (Hull) game we knew their backline could be got at, and we knew if we could build platforms to attack in our wide areas we could cause them problems.

“You need a bit of luck but we’re a little disappointed we haven’t got more goals because the performance in the second half warranted that.

“First half we’d been against the wind, so getting Paddy (Madden), Harvey and Ched (Evans) in the game was a bit more difficult.

“But in the second period, those balls that had been falling in front of their backline were going behind them and that’s where Ched, Paddy and Harvey with his pace can capitalise.”

Payback time for Quinlan Adam Quinlan says he’s looking forward to repaying Hull KR for their faith in him after agreeing a new one-year contract.

The 27-year-old Australian will enter his fifth season with the club in 2021 after reaching an agreement to stay beyond his current deal.

Having been hit with injuries in recent years, the 2018 Rovers player of the year says he’s determined to pay back the club.

“I’m excited for another year here,” said Quinlan.

“I’ve had a few injuries which haven’t bene great, so I’m looking forward to hopefully getting out there and repaying it to the club.”

Tigers boss has given his assessment of the club’s work in the transfer market

Grant McCann has declared himself happy with Hull City’s transfer business as the summer window draws to a close.

The Tigers have signed 10 players since the club’s relegation from the Championship, in a bid to prepare for life in League One, and those new arrivals have helped City to what had been a fine start winning their first four games, before last Friday’s setback at Fleetwood Town.

City have until 5pm on Friday afternoon to do business with other clubs in English football, but McCann, who previously hinted

there could still be a final arrival at the KCOM Stadium, has now confirmed there will be no fresh incomings.

Regan Slater became the most recent arrival after making the switch from Sheffield United at the end of last month, joining the likes of Hakeeb Adelakun, Greg Docherty, Richie Smallwood and Josh Emmanuel who all arrived earlier in the window, with the club keen to get their business done as quickly as possible.

“Not in, no. Definitely not in,” the Ulsterman said as he prepares to face Rochdale on Saturday afternoon at Spotland, where he’ll welcome back captain Smallwood, Tom Eaves, Josh

Magennis and Callum Jones.

“We’re happy with the group we’ve got. We’re quite strong and the players are coming back to fitness now.

“We’ve got good cover in every position.”

While City’s incoming business may now have been completed, McCann still hopes one or two of his younger players could yet secure temporary moves away, though nothing has yet been confirmed with time running out.

“We’re looking to try and get one or two out on loan. There have been conversations but nothing has really materialised yet, nothing striking that makes us say ‘yes, we’ll do it’, so that’s where we are.”

Any possible departure could find themselves plying their trade in the non-league, after the competition restarted earlier this month following a lengthy lay-off due to coronavirus, and the return of the pyramid has pleased the City boss, with him keen to find the right move for his youngsters to ensure their development is not hampered.

If nothing materialises before Friday’s deadline, the City chief says he’s not concerned about a lack of football, with a hectic first team and Under-23 schedule between now and when the winter transfer window opens on January 1, giving the players plenty of chance to impress.
