Guidelines for Student Drivers Students who wish to drive to school and park a vehicle at the school, as well as potentially transport other students may do so, subject to the following conditions:
1) The school is responsible for the safety of all students during the hours that school is in session. As such: a. The student will drive the vehicle in a responsible manner at all times but especially in the school parking lot. Safe vehicle speeds must be maintained especially during busy traffic times in the lot (before school, at lunch, and after school). b. The vehicle should be used as a means of transportation, not a social centre. For example, students should not be in or at the car during the day just “hanging out”. c. The student must obey all traffic laws while operating their vehicle (speed limits, seat belts, passenger numbers, restrictions, and so on). d. Vehicles must be parked in designated spots only. 2) The school is liable for ensuring that students are covered for any insurable situations. As such: a. The student agrees that they will not transport other students at any time unless permission has been granted by the parents of the driver and the parents of the passenger(s). b. Students will only be permitted to drive for field trips or sports outings if the owner of the vehicle has signed a waiver indicating the type of insurance coverage on the vehicle. c. The student and vehicle owner understand that the school accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage incurred while the vehicle is on the school property. d. Parking privileges are for the hours of school operation only, and do not include evenings, weekends, or holidays without prior approval of the school administrator. e. Student drivers and their passengers must sign out in the school office before leaving school property. 3) The school understands that driving is a privilege that must be undertaken responsibly. As such: a. A student found in violation of the above guidelines will be contacted by the Dean of Students to discuss their driving privileges. b. A student’s privileges may be revoked for a duration of time if there are repeated offenses.
