We are Called to Care People. Creation. Building.
Hamilton District Christian High 2020-2023 CASE FOR SUPPORT
Together, We are Called to Care Our beautiful and much-loved building is in need of some care. As a school community, we must come together to upgrade our school, for today and for the future. While still in good working order, major areas of the school have simply met the end of their normal lifespan, and must be replaced. As well, we must keep pace with accessibility for those with disabilities, and our school presents barriers. We also wish to be more active in our environmental stewardship. The CARE Campaign is a multi-year resource-generation campaign that allows our highest priorities to get underway: •
urgent building repairs
•
important building upgrades
•
building safety
•
accessibility
•
environmental stewardship
Upon completion, a modest estimate shows savings of over $100,000 in annual operating cost savings for the school. Your faithful support is needed to safeguard the school for current and future students and to create a state of readiness for future growth and innovation.
Together, our goal is to raise $3 million.
Background Through the 2019 Feasibility Study, in our Membership Meetings, and from our staff, we have heard a consistent message about what we, as a whole community, value and wish to prioritise:
How is the CARE Campaign governed? CARE Project Team: This senior staff leadership group of five meets regularly to discuss campaign finance, projects and fundraising.
Care for all God's People • Innovative, Christ-centred learning • Tuition affordability • Accessibility • Inclusion (of differently-abled community members)
Advancement Staff Team: These staff lead all fundraising elements relating to the CARE Campaign. CARE Campaign Cabinet:
Care For God's Creation • Green energy • Energy efficiency and conservation
These committed volunteers work with staff in sharing the CARE story among members of the HDCH community. Facility Advisory Council:
Care for our Building • Necessary and timely maintenance • Strategic stewardship upgrades
Three construction industry leaders and three staff members who deal with project management, costs, timing, permits and construction planning. HDCH Board and Finance
These are the values and priorities that inform the CARE Campaign
Committee: These bodies provide strategic oversight.
Innovation in Learning HDCH belongs to God and we are the stewards of the school. As a community, we are committed to this building and campus. The rationale for campus renewal (whether through renovation or new build) is more than just maintaining a usable structure. Our ongoing objective is advancing innovative learning by changing and creating new spaces that reflect evolving teaching approaches. Innovative learning emphasises critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving.

The completion of the CARE Campaign places HDCH in a state of readiness for rethinking our learning spaces, building and campus.
When these projects are completed, the building will be: •
More cost-effective to run, with projected cost reductions of more than $100K annually
•
Accessible for entry and reaching second floor classrooms
•
In a good state of repair
•
A green energy producer
Why is the CARE Campaign needed now?
•
The building presents barriers to those in wheelchairs, using crutches, or mobility scooters
•
The dignity and safety of those in wheelchairs is in question, when the main entrance and elevator cannot be used independently.
•
Roofs are beyond expected lifespan, and are leaking. Interim repairs to both roof and to damaged rooms below are costly.
•
Heating and cooling equipment are inefficient and beyond expected lifespan. Risk to malfunction is high.
•
Septic tank has passed its expected lifespan.
•
Our dreams of continued innovation in Christian learning spaces are hampered by our current, aging septic system.
•
The sewer connection and solar panels will provide >$100K in annual savings to the school, operational savings that can be rerouted to students’ learning.
We must continue to be
good stewards
of our 20-acre corner of the kingdom.
Care for All God's People
Care for God's
Let’s Get Into the Details! CARE Projects •
Replace the front walkway, adding accessible front doors
•
Replace the freight elevator with an accessible elevator
•
Cover the roof with solar panels to produce our own power
•
Remove the original septic tank, and connect to city sewer system
•
Replace three remaining aged roof sections and the original heating/cooling units
Thanks for Caring!
Care for All God's People HDCH presents barriers to access for people in wheelchairs, using canes and other mobility devices. •
Accessible parking spaces are a long way from the entrance, and those parking in those spaces must cross active traffic lanes
•
Curbs and front walk have a variety of uneven and cracked surfaces
•
Front doors are heavy and do not offer light-touch or push button

Current freight style elevator cannot be used independently
Total Donor Contribution Needed: $250,000 Your donation means those who are differently-abled can enter the building and attend second floor classrooms safely and independently.
Care for God's Creation Why Solar? •
Solar is green energy, clean and sustainable
•
The HDCH roof is uniquely suited to solar: covering our roof with panels means that the school will be using nearly 100% solar power
Tentatively Secured
•
Solar panels increase the lifespan of roofs through added protection
•
Panels themselves have 30-year life span and are recyclable; a full solar array would produce enough power for HDCH to be self-sufficient
•
Students and community will be engaged in HD’s role in environmental stewardship through ending reliance on hydroelectric power and becoming self-sufficient producers of our own power
Total Donor Contribution Needed: $900,000 Your donation means HDCH produces its own green power, generating an estimated $100,000 in annual electricity cost savings.
Care for our Building
Creation Care for our Building Why Connect to the Sewer? •
Septic tank units are 30-year-old originals; end-of-lifespan leaking is a concern
•
Sewer pumping costs around $33,000 per year
•
No building expansion or additions on the HDCH property are permitted until the sewer connection is complete
•
Pump-outs take place 3-4 times a week and create unpleasant odour in the school
•
Septic systems are no longer permitted by city planners for new school buildings
•
Connecting to sewer line on Garner Road allows for school capacity to rise from 500 to 650
•
HDCH has already invested in initial drawings and engineering work
Total Donor Contribution Needed: $500,000 Your donation means HDCH eliminates annual costs of $33,000 in septic pumping fees.
Regular Roof Maintenance •
Aging roof sections are failing, and must be replaced in the next two years
•
Failure to replace these roof sections will lead to escalating water damage, potentially causing increased costs of repairs and replacements, possible losses of equipment, furniture and supplies
•
HVAC equipment is also 30 years old and is past its useful life
Total Donor Contribution Needed: $1,500,000 Your donation means protecting the building interior from further water damage and increasing efficiency through new heating and cooling technology.

“The existing septic holding tank has served its purpose and was the only alternative at the time of construction, 30 years ago, and it is now at the end of its expected lifespan. There is no way around it, but the tank should be abandoned and removed and the building needs to be connected to the city infrastructure which is now in place, it makes the best sense. Wasting tuition money received from families is literally flushing money down the drain.” ~Mark Demik, Partner, Demik Construction LP

How did we get here?
Large routine capital projects were placed on hold for several years as HDCH considered a possible re-build of the school. When this discussion ended, we together launched the CARE Campaign to fund the completion of the delayed work.
How might you contribute?
When donors choose to make a multi-year or monthly gift commitment, they can manage their giving and ensure they are part of the solution while helping HDCH plan for its future. Will you join with other supporters and make a pledge of support? HDCH is continually blessed by our faithful community, which time and again has shared with the school from God’s abundant provision to them. Right now, the need is for all of us to join this four-year journey to complete and pay for all the CARE projects. The CARE Campaign Gift Chart breaks down our giving so that everyone in our community can find a place to help. All gifts of all sizes come together to support our school and care for our corner of God’s kingdom.

KYRA DOBRENSKI
YOUTH ACCESIBILITY LEADER “My name is Kyra Dobrenski and I am a grade ten student here at HDCH. As somebody unable to use the left side of her body and a part-time wheelchair user, it is impossible to enter the front of the school unassisted because the ground is so uneven. The doors are too heavy, and close too fast. Another significant barrier is the elevator. In a wheelchair the door is way too heavy to open, which makes getting in and out extremely difficult. I and many others are determined to raise funds to create accessible spaces at HDCH and bring awareness to the challenges that so many disabled people face every day. This is why I am so excited for this opportunity to work toward eliminating the factor of frustration and create positive change going forward. Thank you for supporting the CARE Campaign.”
