Be A Hero: Give Blood

As families plan their fall activities, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services encourages you to make another plan—to donate blood.

The need for blood is constant—every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. That’s why it’s important to donate throughout the year, including this fall.

Generally, donors must be aged 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health, feel well and not be taking antibiotics. Eligibility varies by location, so check with your local donation center.

Why should I donate?

Donating blood helps cancer patients, accident and burn victims, transplant recipients and individuals suffering from blood disorders and chronic conditions. Plus, there is no substitute for blood. Donors are the only way to ensure that blood is available when people need it.

What happens during the donation?

Whether you choose to give through a mobile blood drive or at a donation center, the process is similar.

1. Registration: You will sign in, show your ID, and read some information.

2. Health History and Health Check: You will fill out a questionnaire about your health, travel, and lifestyle to confirm your eligibility. Someone will also check your temperature, blood pressure, iron levels, and pulse.

3. The Donation: Your arm will be cleaned and sterilized, then blood will be drawn from your arm.

4. Snack Time: You can then enjoy a snack and a drink while waiting 10 to15 minutes before you leave.

Are certain blood types needed?

Blood banks need a diverse supply of blood and their needs change daily. Plus, blood types vary and can be more or less common in certain racial and

ethnic groups, so we need a wide range of people with different blood types to donate regularly.

Can I give blood if I had COVID-19?

If you tested positive for COVID-19, but did not have symptoms, you’re eligible to donate blood 10 days after the positive test result. If you tested positive and had symptoms, then you must wait to donate until you are symptom-free for at least 10 days. If you were hospitalized, you may have received a treatment that requires you to defer your donation. For example, if you received a blood transfusion or convalescent plasma, you cannot donate for one year.

Can I give blood if I received a COVID-19 vaccine?

If you had an inactivated or RNA based COVID-19 vaccine from AstraZeneca, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, Novavax, or Pfizer, you can donate blood if you are feeling well. If you got a live attenuated COVID-19 vaccine or do not know what type of COVID-19 vaccine you received, you must wait two weeks before giving blood. At your appointment, you’ll be asked for the manufacturer name, so bring your vaccination card with you.

Learn More

The Office of Infectious Disease and HIV/AIDS Policy, part of the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, launched the new Giving = Living campaign to increase awareness of the importance of donating blood and to encourage Americans to create new, regular donation habits.

You can go to hhs.gov/giveblood to find a donation center nearby.

3 Reasons to Ditch Your Laundry Detergent for Eco Strips

The laundry industry would have you believe that in order to get brilliant, clean laundry, you need to use powders, liquids and pods that are diluted with water, and come in bulky, single-use plastic containers. However, according to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), plastic waste is en route to overtake fossil fuels as the leading environmental pollution by 2030.

According to The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050, making this the best time to consider a more sustainable laundry routine.

Offering the same cleaning power as traditional detergents, eco laundry strips are leading the way with many benefits. Usually sold online by subscription with free sampling, these pre-measured, paper-thin resin strips boast natural ingredients, zero waste and no plastic -- good reasons to consider ditching mom’s laundry detergent for an eco-friendly one.

In case you’re considering reducing plastic in your household this year, here are three earth-impacting reasons to make the switch to laundry strips:

95% Less Transportation Pollution. Significantly reducing greenhouse gases and fossil fuels, laundry strips are concentrated soap that dissolves and biodegrades naturally in water. They’re small and lightweight, unlike traditional detergent that is 10% soap and 90% water, which results in transporting water around the world and having a huge eco footprint.

Plastic-Free. Laundry strips are pre-measured with one strip equaling one load, and packaged in recycled paper, unlike most common detergents that use single-use plastic containers. With 292.4 tons of plastic ending up in landfills and less than 9% actually recycled (source EPA), going plastic-free to save the environment is a no-brainer.

Plant-Derived Ingredient. Laundry strips are hypoallergenic and safe for the most sensitive skin types. They boast natural scented oils and plant-derived ingredients that clean laundry, as well as traditional detergent, minus the over- 200 synthetic chemicals that can result in skin or eye irritation, eczema, rashes, endocrine disruption, and more.

Adding to the positive environmental impact, let’s not overlook the convenience. After all, who wouldn’t love not having to deal with big, bulky containers? Ordering by subscription may take a moment to get used to, but having your laundry detergent delivered in an envelope to your door and storing it in a drawer is a huge bonus we’re guessing your home decorator will love.

By transforming the way we do laundry, we can do our part to reduce our environmental impact. Learn more about eco laundry strips, and try them for free at USolve.com

A Primer for First-Time Homebuyers

After having waited on the sidelines for what seemed like forever, firsttime homebuyers last year made 38 percent of all U.S. single-family home purchases - the biggest share since 2000 - and the 2.07 million new or existing houses they bought ended up being 7 percent more than in 2016, Bloomberg.com reported.

“Pent-up demand” is how the news site described it, citing Millennials as one of the driving forces.

But the market for house-hunting newbies like yourself has changed considerably from that most recent high mark of nearly two decades ago. And you know what they say: “Forewarned is forearmed.” Read on.

* Inventory is tight.

So tight, in fact - especially for lower-priced starter-homes - that, as the Wall Street Journal wrote, even “buyers in historically calm markets such as Boise, Idaho, and Minneapolis are facing bidding wars, prompting them to dig deep into their coffers to win deals.”

Not into bidding wars? Well, there’s always Little Rock, Arkansas.

Unlike Denver, Seattle and San Francisco - which LendingTree named the “most challenging” cities in the nation for first-time buyers - Little Rock was rated a veritable paradise for house hunters.

* There’s still a lot of all-cash buyers out there, so don’t be afraid to get creative.

Though the number of all-cash transactions peaked at 40 percent in 2011 and 2012 - with savvy investors still taking advantage of the subprime mortgage crisis by buying up homes many then rented out - last year’s 28.8 percent figure remains above normal. (One reason for the tight inventory: “Investors (are) making too much money as landlords to sell,” according to MarketWatch.com.)

Granted, you’re at a disadvantage if someone else waves $500,000 in cash in front of a seller even if you arrive pre-approved for a mortgage. However,

HDTV.com tells the story of a couple who got a “great deal” on their Denver home - yes, Denver - by adding a contingency to their $300,000 bid that they’d pay $1,000 over any other competing offer up to a maximum of $329,000.

“Although unconventional,” the site admitted, “a creative strategy like this can be very effective in today’s market.”

* Don’t automatically reject a fixer-upper because you’re not handy enough to fix things like the roof.

Everyone knows you can save a bundle by buying a house that needs work, but some things - including electrical system overhauls and extensive roof repairs - are safer left to the pros. So the question becomes this: How far ahead would you come out, financially, after deducting those costs from the house’s likely post-renovation market value?

“An attractive roof is the ultimate curb enhancer, so it’s important to figure that into your calculations,” said Patsy O’Neill, a sales associate with Sotheby’s in Montclair, New Jersey.

You can play around with different looks (i.e., Victorian vs. ranch) by using the free Virtual Home Remodeler launched by GAF (gaf.com), North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. And the website’s GAF Master Elite Contractor database can help you find the most reputable and adequately insured professionals in your area.

* You may be being watched.

Literally.

With owners leerier these days of strangers walking through their properties, they’re increasingly employing devices capable of tracking prospective buyers’ conversations and actions.

Yes, it can be creepy. The bigger danger, though, as MarketWatch.com noted, is that - if you don’t watch what you’re saying - there’s “a real risk” of tipping your hand enough that you wind up overpaying. -(NewsUSA)

4 Questions to Ask When Selecting a Medicare Advantage Plan

(George Renaudin, Medicare President, Humana) - As inflation causes us all to stretch our dollars, the majority of Americans are likely focused on finding the best prices without sacrificing quality. Healthcare is no exception, so picking the right insurance plan that meets your needs can be critical to maintaining a balanced budget.

During the Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Election Period, which runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, people eligible for Medicare have the opportunity to select a plan that provides the affordability, convenience and benefits they want as well as the quality healthcare they deserve.

When evaluating Medicare Advantage plans, here are four key questions to consider:

• Are your preferred doctors and hospitals in-network? If you have a doctor you trust or limited hospitals in your area, make sure they are in your network before selecting a plan.

• Do you need dental, vision or hearing coverage? Evaluate your health needs. Some people will just need dental insurance, while others may need vision and hearing coverage.

• What about prescription drug coverage? Prescription drug coverage is included in many Medicare Advantage plans, and some plans even offer $0 copays. Make a list of your medications and compare estimated prescription costs as you evaluate plans.

• What additional benefits do you need? Some plans include transportation assistance to and from doctors’ offices; fitness programs; mental health

services; or allowances for out-of-pocket dental, vision or hearing costs. Medicare Advantage members may also consider getting healthcare in the home from innetwork providers, such as Heal for primary care or CenterWell Home Health for acute care and chronic health issues.

There are many new Medicare Advantage offerings this year, so it is worth taking the time to evaluate your options to find the best plan for your healthcare needs -and your wallet. In fact, consumers who select Medicare Advantage save nearly $2,000 per year compared with what beneficiaries pay with original Medicare.

For more information, visit www.Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY: 1-877-486-2048) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, you can learn about Humana Medicare Advantage plans, which are recommended by USAA, by going to www.Humana.com/Medicare or calling 1-888-372-2614 (TTY: 711) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time, seven days a week, to speak with a licensed sales agent.

Additional Information Humana is a Medicare Advantage HMO, HMO SNP, PPO, PPO SNP AND PFFS organization with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in any Humana plan depends on contract renewal. Other providers are available in the Humana network.

America’s Retirement Score Hits All-Time High

That’s according to Fidelity Investments’ latest biennial Retirement Savings Assessment study, which - while mostly upbeat - also makes clear that all too many of those surveyed remain “at risk” of not being able to fully cover essential expenses in retirement if they don’t turn things around.

Specifically, after totaling up the assets of the 25- to 74-year-old respondents earning at least $20,000 annually - and that included current or expected Social Security benefits - Fidelity estimated that the typical saver is on track to have 80 percent of the income he or she will need to cover retirement costs. That’s the highest it’s been since the study was first conducted in 2005, when the same figure was 62 percent and people were just beginning to know the joys of watching videos of cats performing weird tricks.

“It’s a significant improvement,” says Ken Hevert, Fidelity’s senior vice president of retirement, who attributed the rise to both a higher median savings rate compared to 2006 (8.8 percent vs. 3.6 percent) and better portfolio asset allocation.

Even more comprehensively, four color-coded categories were used to show where households fell on a retirement preparedness spectrum based on their ability to handle estimated expenses in a down market:

* Dark Green Thirty-two percent were on target to cover more than 95 percent of their freight (up 1 percent from 2016).

* Green. Eighteen percent were looking good as far as essentials go, but not discretionary items like travel and entertainment (down 1 percent from 2016).

likely required to their planned lifestyles (down 1 percent from 2016).

* Red. Twenty-eight percent definitely “need attention,” to put it kindly (up 1 percent from 2016).

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the study had to do with Millennials.

For the first time ever, those born between 1981 and 1992 surpassed the older Generation X in Fidelity’s unique cross-generations scorecard. The latter are on track to have 78 percent of the retirement income they’ll need, while the former lags behind by 1 percent - though that’s presumably after many of them dipped into their own savings to pay the college tuitions of their Millennial offspring. “Millennials are clearly putting money aside for retirement and taking more control of their personal situations,” says Hevert.

And Baby Boomers? Collectively, they’re in the best position of all, especially those Baby Boomers with increasingly rare pensions, and are on course to have set aside 86 percent of the money they’ll need.

For those curious where they stand, Fidelity allows anyone to access their retirement score online. And if you really want a cushiony retirement, keep in mind that you could have 108 percent of what you’ll need by embracing all three of the following “accelerators”: saving at least 15 percent of your income yearly; ensuring an age-appropriate asset mix; and deferring Social Security benefits till at least 66 or 67.

“While these actions taken separately are clearly helpful,” says Hevert, “doing all three could help bring you from good to great.”

You Can Help Ease The Pain Of Sickle Cell Disease

just six months of age, Tiereney

was diagnosed with sickle cell disease.

Understanding Sickle Cell Disease

This genetic blood disease can cause extreme pain and life-threatening complications. “It’s like having a rubber band around your wrist that’s getting tighter and tighter and never releases,” said Bell, describing the pain of a sickle cell crisis. At 17, she suffered a ministroke that caused slight paralysis on the left side of her body, a complication of the disease. She spent months in physical therapy to overcome the paralysis.

In the U.S. it’s estimated more than 100,000 people—the majority of African descent—live with sickle cell disease. The condition distorts soft, round blood cells and turns them hard and crescent-shaped. These cells can get caught in blood vessels which can cause extreme pain and lead to stroke and organ failure.

What Can Be Done

To help prevent complications, many people rely on monthly red blood cell exchanges, a non-surgical therapy that removes abnormal red blood cells and replaces them with healthy ones from blood donors. To date, Bell has received more than 850 units of lifesaving blood from generous donors.

To reduce the risk of transfusion complications, blood transfused to patients with sickle cell disease must be closely matched. Since people are more likely to find a compatible blood match from a donor of the same race or similar ethnicity, blood donors of all races and ethnicities are needed to help ensure a diverse blood supply to support the blood transfusion needs

of patients. For Bell, blood donors who are Black can help provide a compatible match.

A two-time HBCU graduate, Bell credits regular blood transfusion treatments with helping her complete her studies at Xavier University and Morehouse School of Medicine, where she earned a Master of Public Health degree with a concentration in Epidemiology. Today, she works as an epidemiologist at the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as a sickle cell advocate.

“Most sickle cell patients battle pain every day; most days in silence,” said Bell.

“Those who understand how important blood donation are and continue to donate blood have truly earned the right to be called heroes. This selfless act is why I am still thriving.”

What About Screening

The American Red Cross is currently screening all blood, platelet and plasma donations from self-identified African American donors for the sickle cell trait. Because sickle cell trait testing at birth was not widely provided until 2006, this screening provides blood donors with additional health insight.

What You Can Do

To help save lives of people with sickle cell disease, schedule an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/OurBlood, downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-Red-Cross (1-800-7332767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo devise.
