At 18 years old, Tymia Green has already accomplished remarkable feats. She’s graced fashion runways as a teen model, clinched the title of Miss South Carolina Pre-Teen, lobbied Congress on behalf of Medicaid on Capitol Hill, served as an ambassador for the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital, and recently graduated high school—all while courageously battling sickle cell disease.
“I love using my voice for the people who are not heard and showing the world what you can do, even with a disability,” said Green, who was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at three weeks old.
The most common genetic blood disease in the U.S., sickle cell disease distorts soft, round blood cells and turns them hard and crescent-shaped, which can cause extreme pain and lifethreatening complications—a harsh reality Green knows all too well.
At one years old, she suffered from splenic sequestration when her sickled red blood cells became trapped in her spleen, blocking blood flow and causing her spleen to swell.
“I was too small in size for my age to go through surgery, so I had to have a year’s worth of blood transfusions, once a month, until I turned two years old,” said Green.
1
The monthly red blood cell exchanges Green received as a toddler were a non-surgical therapy that removes abnormal red blood cells and replaces them with healthy ones from blood donors.
Later, Green developed avascular necrosis of her hip and knee. This affects up to 10% of patients living with sickle cell disease and occurs when bone tissue dies as a result of blocked blood flow to the bones.
In addition to secondary complications, there have been numerous times Green has been hospitalized due to sickle cell pain crises and dangerously low hemoglobin levels.
“I could barely move, walk or stand up straight,” said Green. “I would have to have a blood transfusion, sometimes even two, to increase my hemoglobin and allow me not to be so lethargic.”
And then there was the time when the blood supply was low, and the blood Green desperately needed was not on the hospital shelves.
“It was one of the most scariest times in my life because I thought that I would not make it,” said Green. “My hemoglobin dropped to 5.9 and the blood that I needed was not available.”
“When I receive a blood transfusion, it makes me feel rejuvenated and makes me feel as though I am back to myself,” said Green, who has received 130 blood transfusions to date. “Even though I may be in the hospital, I have a little piece of my life back.”
To reduce the risk of transfusion complications, blood transfused to patients with sickle cell disease must be closely matched. Since these patients are three times more likely to find a compatible blood match from blood donors who are Black or African American compared to donors who are not, blood donors of all races and ethnicities are needed to help ensure a diverse blood supply to support the blood transfusion needs of all patients.
For those on the fence about giving blood, Green shares, “Just giving a moment of your time can help save a life, near or far, and help them to be able to be themselves again.”
To help people living with sickle cell disease, schedule an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org/OurBlood or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Good news for people concerned about the planet. Today’s resourceful industrial designers and engineers are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to develop quality products and limit environmental impacts.
Right now, 80% of the total emissions of a product happen during its design phase. You’d think with that much impact tied to one stage of production, organizations would be looking high and low for a way to decarbonize products. But, until now, no one has been able to do it.

The complexities involved in identifying and implementing sustainable choices during the design process are one hurdle, as well as the dependence on specific expertise. Products often traverse multiple countries and manufacturing stages before reaching their final disposal stage, making data hard to capture.
But, there is another reason, too. Engineers—the makers and the builders of everything we use—are often not given the necessary information to make products with a smaller carbon footprint.
No one wants to make “bad” products. But “good” products are only possible when engineers have all the right data during the design phase. By investing in integrated data, organizations will support the engineer in their decision-making while accelerating innovation—and minimizing environmental impact—like we’ve never seen before.
Enter Makersite and its AI-powered platform that automates an analysis of a company’s current supply chain and design processes by integrating a robust database of supply chain data to enable product designers to make more informed decisions and greener products. Founded by CEO Neil D’Souza, Makersite is the only cloud-based platform utilizing AI to calculate the carbon emissions of every component of a product from creation to disposal in a lifecycle analysis.
During this process, AI offers unparalleled advantages in data collection, processing, and mapping across disparate systems, saving time and resources. Because it can analyze vast datasets, it provides a clear and
accurate picture of a product’s environmental impact.
AI can quickly identify alternative materials or suppliers in real-time, so product teams can make smarter choices. With AI, product engineers and designers can automatically connect product components and manufacturing processes to the right supply chain data from a harmonized and hyperconnected database, instantly solving one of the most time-consuming problems: mapping data to multiple sources at a granular level.
The result is a detailed, extremely specific view into deep-tier supply chains, giving users a better understanding of environmental footprints, should-costing, and compliance risks increase at an unprecedented speed.
Makersite’s platform considers the entire lifespan of a product when calculating its environmental impact. This thorough analysis lets designers and engineers identify ways to reduce environmental damage not just in production, but in product use and disposal. It integrates with existing systems and workflows for a seamless supply of information and heightened efficiency in sustainability analysis, leading to more sustainable products and a greener planet.
For example, Microsoft is committed to reducing the environmental effects of its products through structured eco-design approaches. Using Makersite to automate and scale the product modeling process and supply chainspecific environmental impact accounting, Microsoft improved quality, increased accuracy, and reported better identification of environmental hotspots in the supply chain. This approach resulted in a 28% reduction of the carbon emissions from production of their Surface Pro 10 laptop.
The benefits of AI-driven product design will continue to evolve and enable even better decision-making, deeper tier supply chain visibility, and overall impact on climate change.
Companies considering applying AI to lifecycle analysis and sustainable product development can find useful facts and expert advice from Makersite at www.makersite.io.
Storms are growing more powerful and frequent, so having the right outdoor power equipment on hand and using it safely is important, says the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). Home and business owners should think ahead before foul weather or a power outage occurs.
“Any season can be storm season now,” says Kris Kiser, President & CEO of OPEI, an international trade association representing manufacturers and suppliers of outdoor power equipment, small engines, battery power systems, portable generators, utility and personal transport vehicles, and golf cars. “It’s smart to invest in portable and whole house generators and to have other outdoor power equipment on hand, such as water pumps and chainsaws to handle water damage or flooding and damage from fallen trees.”
A utility type vehicle can transport people and supplies quickly in an emergency. Keep the vehicle stable and drive slowly. Do not turn mid-slope or while on a hill. Consider taking a UTV safety course.
He notes that outdoor power equipment is evolving all the time. “There’s a power source for every need including battery/electric, propane, solar and gasoline,” he says, noting each has different maintenance and care requirements. “It’s important that you know how to safely operate your individual equipment. And, remember, always read and follow the manufacturer’s manual and never disable safety features.”
To get ready for inclement weather, homeowners should follow these tips.
1. Before a storm identify which equipment could be needed. Chainsaws or pole saws can trim and clear limbs and shrubs that may break off or get damaged by high winds. String trimmers, pruners and chainsaws can remove other material from around your home that may make it vulnerable to wildfires.
A portable generator powers key appliances and charges cell phones when utilities go down. A whole house generator can keep the lights and appliances on and running. Before an outage, plan where the generator will be set up (never in a home or garage, and always away from your home and any air intake) and determine how to secure it if needed. Buy and install a carbon monoxide detector. Get outdoor-rated extension cords for portable generators and consider adding an approved generator cover for rainy weather.
Water pumps can get water and muck out of basements and homes. Be sure you know how to operate the pump. Never pump substances that your equipment is not designed to cope with. Pay attention to avoid overheating and follow all safety precautions.
2. Always read and follow the safety and usage recommendations provided by outdoor power equipment manufacturers. Never disable safety features. Practice how to operate equipment before you need it. Follow all recommended safety measures on the product as well as in the owner’s manual.
3. Have the right fuel on hand and charge batteries ahead of bad weather. Most gasoline-powered equipment uses E10 or less fuel and most manufacturers recommend adding a fuel stabilizer. Fuel that is more than 30 days old may phase separate and cause running problems, so it’s important to purchase fuel just ahead of a storm. Store fuel safely and only use an approved fuel container. Only use manufacturer-recommended batteries.
4. Pay attention to your energy level and health. Preparation for bad weather, a power outage and storm cleanup can be taxing. Do not operate power equipment when tired or overly fatigued. Drink plenty of water and take regular breaks. Always use safety gear such as chaps, gloves, eye protection and hearing protection when operating equipment.
5. Always keep children and pets away from operating outdoor power equipment. Outdoor power equipment are not toys, and should never be used in a manner not intended by the manufacturer.

The thought of pairing a wine with food can intimidate a lot of people. How do you decide what food to pair with a wine? What flavors are you looking for? Why does wine pairing even matter?
“Wine and food pairings don’t have to be complicated,” says Riana Mondavi, a member of the fourth generation of the Mondavi wine family from Napa and an ambassador for her family’s CK Mondavi and Family wines. “It’s really about what you taste and smell in the wine and how you feel the wine brings out and compliments the food you are eating.”
If done correctly, a proper pairing can enhance the flavors of both the food and your chosen bottle of wine. The intensity of a specific food or wine depends on a lot of things such as sugar, acid, salt and spice. The food should not overpower the wine (and vice versa). By matching a light wine with light fare or a heavy dish with a heavier wine, the food and wine balance each other out and their intensities line up for a perfect pairing.
For example, if you have a dish that has a lot of citrus in it, it’s great to pair with a Chardonnay, as it also has hints of citrus in it. The two enhance each other and balance out the flavors. A lighter white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, pairs well with summer vegetables, as it brings out the crisp, light flavor profiles. Red wines typically pair best with richer food such as steak and sweets, but there’s no set rule. Many people pair a Merlot with seafood.
CK Mondavi and Family has made wine pairing easy for everyone, and this summer they invite you to play around with pairings. They’ve created a downloadable “Wine pairing made simple” guide on their website: https:// www.ckmondavi.com/ckm-pairings. They also added flavor descriptors to each bottle of CK Mondavi and Family. With descriptors such as “Rich & Velvety” for Cabernet Sauvignon and “Bright & Fresh” for Chardonnay,
Riana Mondavi also recommends impromptu wine pairings with friends. “It’s fun to get together with a group to see what everyone tastes or smells in the wine,” she adds. “Everyone has a different opinion and it’s fun to see what we all come up with.”
So, this summer, have some fun pairing wines with your favorite foods. And while doing it, enter CK Mondavi and Family’s monthly #pairNpost drawing, where you can enter to win a prize. Just snap a photo of your favorite pairing and tag it with #pairNpost on Twitter or Instagram.
It’s all part of a new, fun approach to wine. After all, summer is about enjoying yourself and what better way to enjoy life than at the table with friends and family?
