Since 1970, Michael Krasny has been a professor of English at San Francisco State University and is a widely published scholar, critic, and fiction writer. His frequent lectures cover literature, culture, politics, humor, Judaica, and the arts, and he has also interviewed many of the leading newsmakers and cultural icons of our time. Chapter 2 v Valparaiso This boisterous, colorful Pacific seaport is often likened to the San Francisco Bay Area. Nestled among chaotic hills, its similar geography earned it the nickname Pancho, or “Little San Francisco,” by sailors in the mid-19th century. During California’s gold rush, Valparaiso was an important supply and transit point for Chileans and Europeans heading to California. Follow in the footsteps of Eliza Sommers, the central character of Allende’s Daughter of Fortune, as we visit the neighborhood of Cerro Alegre and learn about British influence on Valparaiso’s history and architecture. Like San Francisco, Valparaiso was nearly destroyed by an earthquake in 1906, but it rose from the ashes to become one of Latin America’s most unique cities and recently earned the designation of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Enjoy time at Pablo Neruda’s Valparaiso home, La Sebastiana, with its maritime motifs, playful layout, and panoramic views of the city, and meet with members of the Pablo Neruda Foundation, dedicated to preserving Neruda’s memory.
