Everything you need to know to enjoy a game of polo

• We teach you some details, key words and phases of the game to understand everything that happens on the field.

- The game

In a polo match two teams each consisting of four players, compete to score the most goals in the opposing goal (the goal) in 4 or 6 periods of play called “chukkers”. Each chukker lasts 7 minutes and has three minutes of time-out in between, which is used to change horses. After each goal, the sides are changed.

Referees

Bocha: White ball made of plastic or wood with which polo is played (the polo magazine of this publishing group is named after it: Polo by La Bocha).

Bell: Key element of the match, which rings every time a chukker ends.

Field: The space where polo is played and its size is bigger than that of three football pitches.

Referees: Referees are the match officials, one for each side of the field. They are usually dressed in black and white striped kit. They are on on horseback.

Banderilleros: Assistants who determine whether a goal is good or not.

Taco: The stick used to play polo. It is composed of a flexible bamboo shaft and a rigid wooden head.

Penalty: The term for fouls committed in the game.

Bleachers: Where the audience sits to watch the game.

Patron: The owner of a polo team.

Petisero: The caretaker and trainer of the polo petisos.

Mimbres: The columns that determine the arch, which is the goal. They are built so that they are easily destroyed in case of collisions, so as not to hurt the horses or riders.

Palenque: Space where the teams set up their base and the horses stay during the game.
