El cuarteto formado por los ingleses Mark y Luke Tomlinson, Charlie Hanbury y el argentino Juan Zavaleta se llevó, tras vencer en chukker suplementario a Sumaya, la edición 2009 de la Queens Cup en el emblemático Guards Polo Club. n su corta vida como equipo, Apes Hill logró uno de los títulos más importantes de la temporada inglesa y del calendario internacional de polo: la Queens Cup. Fue ante Sumaya, y por 12 a 11 en chukker suplementario, gracias a un gol de oro de Charlie Hanbury. Hace apenas tres años que el equipo que tiene a los hermanos Mark y Luke Tomlinson, Hanbury y Juan Gris Zavaleta comenzó a andar en la Queens Cup en Guards Polo Club y la Gold Cup en Cowdray. Con una fuerte organización y los objetivos bien claros, las mieles del éxito no se hicieron esperar mucho tiempo. El año pasado se llevó la Copa Subsidiaria de la Queens Cup en Guards y este año le tocó subir a lo más alto del podio. Fue tras una emotiva y disputada final que disfrutaron las más de 3 mil personas que se dieron cita para la jornada decisiva del torneo, uno de los de mayor historia y prestigio del calendario mundial. Los hermanos Luke y Mark Tomlinson ratificaron su condición de estandartes del polo inglés y su compatriota Charlie Hanbury se erigió como una de las grandes promesas de esta disciplina en el Reino Unido.

Apes Hill tuvo la particularidad de no presentar patrón en su formación, situación cuestionada por unos pocos durante la disputa de la 49º versión de la Copa de La Reina. Más allá de comentarios aislados, la producción de Apes Hill a lo largo del torneo fue incuestionable y el título un merecido premio al esfuerzo y buen juego. Y eso que en la definición tuvo que vérselas con otro gran equipo, Sumaya, que lo hizo esforzarse al máximo para arrebatarle, por segundo año consecutivo, su sueño de levantar la Queens Cup. Al equipo del árabe Ahmed Aboughazale se le negó otra vez el trofeo. En el 2008 fue Ellerston y este año Apes Hill.

Por eso sus jugadores, entre ellos el experimentado Milo Fernández Araujo, el talentoso Hilario Ulloa y el ascendente sudafricano Ignatius du Plessis no encontraban consuelo tras otra final perdida. Dicen que la tercera es la vencida por lo que seguramente este gran equipo de Sumaya tendrá su revancha y lo veremos en poco tiempo levantando la Queens Cup. El partido Apes Hill y Sumaya llegaron a la final en condición de invictos por lo que el presagio de una intensa y emotiva final se confirmó. Fueron seis chukkers de fricciones, velocidad, goles e igualdad, mucha igualdad.

Tanto que de los seis chukkers reglamentarios, cuatro terminaron en empate, entre ellos, lógicamente, el que forzó el tiempo suplementario y que terminó consagrando a Apes Hill.

El campeón pegó primero, con Zavaleta inaugurando el marcador pero la respuesta de Sumaya no tardó en llegar e Hilario Ulloa puso la igualdad. La intensidad con la cual comenzó el partido produjo el primer golpe a los 4 minutos siendo Milo Fernández Araújo el dañado. El impacto no pasó a mayores pero fue la confirmación de la dureza de la final de la Queens Cup. El segundo y tercer chukker tuvo a Apes Hill dominando por la mínima (4-3 y 7-6) siendo en este último período cuando el vencedor sacó la mayor diferencia en el marcador durante el partido (7-4). Tras la mitad de tiempo, los definitivos tres chukkers terminaron en igualdad, el cuarto 8 a 8, el quinto 9 a 9 y finalmente el sexto igualados en 11, llevando así la definición al chukker suplementario.

The team made up of the Englishmen Mark and Luke Tomlinson and Charlie Hanbury and the Argentine Juan Zavaleta won the 2009 Queen’s Cup at the iconic Guards Polo Club after beating Sumaya in the final in an extra chukka.

It was following an exciting and hard-fought final, enjoyed by over 3,000 people who attended the final day of the tournament, one of the richest in history and one of the most prestigious on the world scene. The brothers Luke and Mark Tomlinson confirmed their status as the standard bearers of English polo and their fellow countryman Charlie Hanbury set himself up as one of the promising young stars of the sport in the United Kingdom. They were joined by the Argentine Juan Martín Zavaleta, another promising talent in Argentine polo.

n their short life as a team, Apes Hill have clinched one of the most important titles of the English season and world polo: the Queen’s Cup.

Apes Hill’s unique feature was its lack of a patron in the team, a circumstance that was questioned by a few people during the 49th Queen’s Cup.

It was against Sumaya and by 12 goals to 11 in an extra chukka, thanks to a golden goal from Charlie Hanbury.

Aside from these isolated comments, the performance from Apes Hill throughout the tournament was unquestionable and the title was a well-deserved reward for their effort and good play. In the final they had to contend with another great team, Sumaya, who made them give it everything they had if they were to snatch away their dream of lifting the Queen’s Cup for a second year running.

It was just three years ago that the team of the brothers Mark and Luke Tomlinson, Hanbury and Juan Gris Zavaleta started competing in the Queen’s Cup at Guards Polo Club and the Gold Cup at Cowdray. With a strong organisation and very clear objectives, they did not have to wait for long for the sweet taste of success. Last year they won the Subsidiary to the Queen’s Cup at Guards and this year it was their turn to climb to the top of the podium.

Arab owner Ahmed Aboughazale’s team denied them the trophy once again. In 2008 it was Ellerston and this year it was Apes Hill. Their players, including the experienced Milo Fernández Araujo, the talented Hilario Ulloa and the up-and-coming South African Ignatius du Plessis found no consolation after losing again in the final.

They say the third time is lucky, so surely this great Sumaya team will have its revenge and we will see them lifting the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cup in the near future. The match Apes Hill and Sumaya reached the final unbeaten, paving the way for an intense and exciting final. They were six chukkas of friction, speed, goals and parity, a lot of parity. In fact, of the six regulation chukkas, four ended with the scores level, including, logically, the one that forced the extra time and finally went to Apes Hill. The champions scored first, with Zavaleta opening the scoring, but Sumayaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s response was swift, with Hilario Ulloa equalising.

The intensity with which the match began led to the first knock in the opening four minutes, with Milo Fernández Araújo the victim. The knock had no serious consequences but it confirmed the tough nature of the Queen’s Cup final. The second and third chukkas saw Apes Hill get their noses in front (4-3 and 7-6) and it was in the latter that the biggest margin of the match was opened up (7-4). After half-time, the final three chukkas ended with the scores level, the fourth on 8-8, the fifth on 9-9 and finally the sixth on 11-11, taking the match in the extra chukka. Like in the opening chukka of the final, Apes Hill were once again the first to score and thanks to Charlie Hanbury they clinched the match and the Queen’s Cup 2009 title. Subsidiary goes to Broncos Before the final of the Queen’s Cup, the Subsidiary Cup final was held on Duke’s Ground, where Broncos, following a great comeback from the fourth chukka, defeated La Bamba de Areco by 12 goals to 11 and won the Harcourt Development Queen’s Cup.●

harlie Hanbury acababa de marcar el gol en chukker suplementario que les significa el título de la Queens Cup. Los festejos se sucedieron en el palenque y luego llegó el turno de la formal ceremonia de entrega de premios junto a SM la Reina Isabel de Inglaterra. Tras el protocolo, La Bocha European Polo conversó con los protagonistas de la hazaña. “Estoy muy contento, la verdad que era una final muy complicada. Sumaya es muy buen equipo y fue un lindo partido”, comentó Mark Tomlinson. “Era una final merecida por lo que mostramos los dos equipos en la fase previa, llegando ambos invictos a la definición. La verdad que no había mucha diferencia entre un equipo y otro pero por suerte la pudimos hacer nosotros sobre el final y llevarnos el título”, agregó. Ante la consulta de dónde estuvo la clave para quebrar un encuentro con tanta paridad, Mark no dudó en afirmar en que “pasó por jugar como equipo. Demostramos tener un gran espíritu de equipo”. Sobre cómo se preparó Apes Hill, que recién lleva tres participaciones en la temporada inglesa, Mark explicó que si bien estuvieron entrenando juntos en Argentina en marzo “no por mucho tiempo pero lo suficiente como para crear un sistema de juego y sobre todo un espíritu colectivo, que fue lo más importante”. El héroe de la final, el prometedor polista inglés, Charlie Hanbury manifestó que en la previa el favorito era Sumaya “porque nosotros llegamos al torneo como equipo nuevo, cambiamos la formación este año, nos estamos conociendo y eso era una desventaja”. “Sumaya es un muy buen equipo y pese a que tuvimos un mejor comienzo y a la diferencia de tres goles que sacamos durante el

tercer chukker (7-4) sabíamos que se nos iban a venir encima y tuvimos claro que no podíamos desconcentrarnos. Por eso no nos sorprendió su remontada”, agregó. Hanbury confesó que la posibilidad de llegar a chukker suplementario “estaba prevista en la planificación de la final y lo manejamos a la hora de elegir los caballos y elaborar el plan de juego”. “Nos ganó un gran equipo” Con la frente en alto pero dolidos por el resultado del partido y sobre todo por ver que se les escapó, por segundo año consecutivo, la Copa de la Reina el patrón de Sumaya, Oussama Aboughazale, confesó que “lógicamente estoy triste por haber perdido pero contento porque nos ganó un gran equipo como Apes Hill”, dejando en claro el espíritu deportivo que reina en el mundo del polo. Aboughazale, cuyo hijo Ahmed juega en el equipo y tuvo una gran temporada, expresó que vive con muchos nervios los partidos decisivos. “Es muy fuerte ver el partido de afuera, quisiese tener 15 años menos para poder estar en la cancha”. El patrón de Sumaya, sin perder su cortesía habitual lanzó el desafío a su rival de la Queens Cup y les dijo: “Espero que nos encontremos en la final de la Gold Cup”. Habrá que esperar a la Gold Cup en Cowdray para saber si su equipo logra sacarse la espina y ganar uno de los torneos más importantes del calendario internacional. Por su parte, el experimentado Milo Fernández Araújo expresó que “personalmente es el polo que disfrutó”, refiriendose al juego que se vio en la final. “Jugar ante un equipo como Apes Hill, que lo hace justamente como equipo, es lo que más disfruto y también fue muy bueno para el polo en general”, agregó.●

harlie Hanbury had scored the goal in the extra chukka that clinched them the Queen’s Cup title. The celebrations continued at the tethering post and after the formal prize-giving ceremony with HRH Queen Elizabeth of England. After the formalities, La Bocha European Polo talked to the stars of the performance. “I am very happy; it really was a very difficult final. Sumaya are a very good team and it was a nice match”, said Mark Tomlinson. “Both teams fully deserved to reach the final following their performances in the preliminary round, both reaching the final undefeated. There really wasn’t much difference between the two teams, but luckily we were able to get ahead in the final and clinch the title”, he added. Asked what the key was to altering the course of such an evenly matched encounter, Mark immediately replied that it was to “play as a team. We showed that we have great team spirit”. On how the team prepared themselves, having recently participated in three competitions in the English season, Mark explained

that although they were training together in Argentina in March, “it wasn’t for long, just enough to create a system of play and in particular a team spirit, which was the most important thing”. The hero of the final, the promising English player Charlie Hanbury, explained that in the preliminary round the favourites were Sumaya, “because we came into the tournament as a new team; we changed our line-up this year and were still getting to know each other, which was a disadvantage”. “Sumaya are a very good team and although we had a better start and despite the threegoal lead we gained in the third chukka (7-4), we knew that they were going to come back at us and that we couldn’t lose concentration, which was why we were not surprised at their comeback”, he added. Hanbiry admitted that the possibility of going to an extra chukka, “was envisaged in our planning for the final and we took it into account when it came to choosing the horses and preparing our game plan”. “We´re beaten by a great team” With his head held high but smarting at the result of the match, and in particular for having let the Queen’s Cup slip through

their fingers for the second year running, the Sumaya patron, Oussama Aboughazale, admitted that “naturally I am sad at having lost, but I’m happy because we were beaten by a great team like Apes Hill”, reiterating the sporting spirit that reigns in the polo world. Aboughazale, whose son Ahmed plays in the team and had a great season, described how he is very nervous during the decisive matches. “It’s tough watching the match from the sidelines; I wish I was 15 years younger so I could be on the field”. The Sumaya patron, without losing his usual good manners, set a challenge to his rival in the Queen’s Cup and said, “I hope we will meet in the final”. We will have to wait until the Gold Cup at Cowdray to know whether his team will manage to get their own back and win one of the most important tournaments on the international scene. A seasoned Milo Fernández Araújo, for his part, said in relation to the final against Apes Hill that, “it’s the kind of polo I personally enjoy. Playing against a team like Apes Hill, who play precisely as a team, is what I enjoy most, and it was also good for polo in general”, he added. ●

El partido lo ganó el cuarteto de Haven por 6 a 3, con Nina Clarkin, la mejor jugadora de polo femenino en el Reino Unido, como MVP del partido. Tras un exclusivo almuerzo, donde se pusieron a subasta un Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Lady, un clinic de polo con Clare Milford Haven, un caballo de Adolfo Cambiaso a elegir en su estancia La Dolfina, en Argentina y un JaegerLeCoultre Reverso Squadra Hometime Steel, entre otros atractivos regalos, se disputó la exhibición de hombres. Cambiaso lideró el JLC Black y Castagnola el JLC White igualando el encuentro en dos goles. Guests enjoyed a beautiful sunny day in London’s countryside and were treated with a cocktail, followed by an Argentinean lunch. Fabio Capello, England´s soccer team coach, Princess Beatrice and Yasmin Le Bon were some of the special guests at Ham Polo Club. The Matches Polo legends and the best professionals polo players joined their forces in raising funds in a day dedicated to sport and humanitarian values. The first exhibition was a ladies match, featuring Jaeger-LeCoultre brand ambassadors: British marchioness Clare Milford Haven and Argentinean Lia Salvo. A close match, in which Jaeger-LeCoultre White beat Jaeger-LeCoultre Purple team 6-3. Nina Clarkin, UK best polo player, was named MVP. In the afternoon, another gentlemen polo game followed, featuring the world best polo player and Jaeger-LeCoultre brand ambassador, Adolfo Cambiaso. The opposite team was lead by Argentinean professional Lolo Castagnola. The game was a hard fought and a fast moving battle between which ended in a 2-2 tie. An auction was held with unique prizes and all proceeds went to ‘Ideas del Sur’, an Argentinean Charity devoted to underprivileged children and the British charity, Maggie’s Cancer caring Centers.Prices included a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Lady, a polo clinic with Clare Milford Haven and helicopter ride, an Adolfo Cambiaso’s personal horse to be chosen at his ranch in Argentina, a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Hometime Steel and several other gifts.● 27

os hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor afrontaron la temporada inglesa con mucha ilusión y ganas y los resultados, para ser su primera participación, fueron positivos. El equipo que formó con Rashid Al Habtoor, Alejandro Muzzio, Piki Díaz Alberdi y Nacho González fue primero en su serie, la Liga 2, de la cual también formaron parte Talandracas, Les Lions II y Azzurra. Con un triunfo ante Talandracas (10-9) y Les Lions II (12-11) y una derrota frente a Azzurra (9-11) el Habtoor Polo Team accedió a cuartos de final como octavo clasificado y se tuvo que ver las caras en esta instancia con Sumaya, hasta ese momento el mejor equipo del torneo. El cuarteto liderado por Rashid Al Habtoor le plantó cara al equipo que

terminó la Queens Cup como vice campeón y ante el cual sucumbió por 14 a 11. Sumaya derrotó a Habtoor en un partido muy friccionado, plagado de faltas y que dejó en claro que ninguno de los dos quería irse del torneo. La despedida fue para Habtoor Polo Team que en su primera presentación en Inglaterra se fue con la frente bien alta. “El balance fue muy bueno” Alejandro “Piki” Díaz Alberdi, uno de los grandes profesionales del polo, formó parte del Habtoor Polo Team en la Queens Cup 2009. Piki, con su particular visión y objetividad, realizó un balance de lo que fue la presentación en “sociedad” del equipo de los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor en la alta competencia.

“El balance fue bueno, hicimos un equipo a último momento con una organización que venía creciendo en Dubai y que de a poco quiere meterse y jugar en el mejor polo del mundo”, explicó. “Decidimos venir a Inglaterra, jugamos la Copa de la Reina y el balance fue muy bueno.Terminamos primeros en la serie, nos tocó un equipo duro en los cuartos de final (Sumaya) que lo llevamos muy bien hasta el cuarto chukker y que terminó siendo el finalista”, agregó. Piki Díaz Alberdi remarcó que “los caballos anduvieron bien y los que jugó Rashid respondieron bárbaro. Obviamente que estás compitiendo con la Fórmula Uno y para el año que viene sabemos lo que hay que mejorar. Sabíamos que nos iba a faltar un poco de organización pero la verdad que quedé muy contento.Además en el equipo se

El neocelandés John-Paul Clarkin fue la gran figura del partido al marcar siete goles, entre ellos el que significó el título, y se llevó el premio MVP. Hotel Le Tour formó con Sehr Ahmad, Nick Pepper, David Allen y Clarkin al tiempo que Black Bears contó con Guy Schwarzenbach, Ed Hitchman, Simon Keyte y John Martin. he brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor confronted the English season with a great deal of expectation and enthusiasm and the results, given that it was their first time taking part, were positive. The team made up of Rashid Al Habtoor, Alejandro Muzzio, Piki Díaz Alberdi and Nacho González finished first in League Two, which also included Talandracas, Les Lions II and Azzurra. With victories against Talandracas (10-9) and Les Lions II (12-11) and a defeat against Azzurra (9-11), the Habtoor Polo Team made it through to the quarterfinals as the eighth best qualifier and had to face Sumaya, who had been the best team in the tournament up to that point. The quartet led by Rashid Al Habtoor put up a good fight against the team that ended as runners-up in the Queen’s Cup, succumbing by 14 goals to 11. Sumaya defeated Habtoor in a very gritty match, riddled with fouls and making it clear that neither team wanted to be knocked out of the tournament. In the end it was the Habtoor Polo Team that said farewell in their first appearance in England and they went with their heads held high. “The outcome was very good” Alejandro ‘Piki’ Díaz Alberdi, one of polo’s great professionals, was part of the Habtoor Polo Team in the 2009 Queen’s Cup. Piki, with his unique perspective and objectivity, took stock of what was brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor’s debut in the top flight. “There was a good balance; we formed a team at the last minute with an organisation that had been developing in Dubai and which bit by bit wants to get involved in the best polo in the world”, he explained. “We decided to come to England, we played the Queen’s Cup and the outcome was very good. We finished first in the league and we drew a tough team in the quarter-finals (Sumaya) with whom we competed very well until the fourth chukka, and who ended up as finalists”, he added. Piki Díaz Alberdi stressed that “the ponies were very good; the ones Rashid played with were fantastic. Obviously we were competing against the Formula One of polo and for next year we know what we have to improve. We knew that we would be lacking a bit in the organisation department but in truth I was very happy with how it went. There was a very good vibe in the team; it was very enjoyable. We put everything into it and it turned out pretty well”.

The seasoned polo player is already thinking about the future and Habtoor Polo Team’s next appearances in the top competitions. “Now we all know what has to be done for next year and after this first experience I am sure we will be able to improve next season”, he concluded. El Abierto Británico se presenta por estas fechas en Cowdray Park Polo con más fuerza que nunca. El tradicional certamen, uno de los de mayor prestigio e historia del calendario internacional de polo y con más de 50 años en juego, tiene a 17 equipos, de hasta 22 goles de handicap, dando todo de sí para llevarse el ansiado trofeo, la Gold Cup. l año pasado la copa la levantó Loro Piana de la mano del patrón Alfio Marchini, Juan Martín Nero, David Stirling Jr. y Jamie Peel, y en esta edición 2009, con prácticamente la misma formación, salvo que el juvenil William Beresford, de 18 años, suplanta a Peel, buscará llevarsela otra vez. Este año no estará Ellerston para buscar esa ansiada revancha (tras perder en la final con Loro Piana por 11 a 10) y quedarse sin el doblete de la temporada inglesa ya que venía de ganar la Queens Cup. Pero sí estarán los hermanos Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres, en esta temporada defendiendo los colores de La Bamba de Areco, y los fuertes cuartetos de Apes Hill y Sumaya que vienen de definir la Queens Cup en Guards. Y sólo por mencionar algunos de los

equipos y figuras que, al igual que todas las temporadas, llegan a Cowdray para desplegar todo su talento y luchar por la prestigiosa Gold Cup. La novedad en esta edición 2009 será la presencia de un nuevo equipo: Cowdray Vikings, con Lila Pearson, cuñada de Lord Cowdray encabezando una formación internacional que tiene a los profesionales Gastón Laulhé de Argentina, Rookie Baillieu de Australia y John Paul Clarkin de Nueva Zelanda. Con los primeros tacazos y bochazos ya se vislumbra que la edición 2009 tendrá, además de la importancia que de por sí ya tiene el torneo, mucha emoción, buen juego y paridad. Lo que también es seguro que con el potencial de los equipos Loro Piana no la tendrá nada fácil para repetir el título y los que quieran llegar a la ansiada final tendrán que esforzarse al máximo.

La competición El torneo comenzó el 23 de junio y se jugarán casi 40 partidos para culminar en la gran final el domingo 19 de julio en la cancha principal de Cowdray Park Polo. Los cuartos de final están previstos para el fin de semana del 11 y 12 de julio y las semifinales se jugarán el 16. Los 17 equipos fueron divididos en tres series, dos de seis equipos y otra de cinco. La primera la integran Sumaya, Talandracas, Les Lions, Loro Piana, Zacara y Cowdray Vikings. La Liga 2: Lechuza Caracas, Apes Hill, La Bamba de Areco, Enigma, Ravensbourne y Les Lions II al tiempo que la serie 3 está conformada por Dubai, Azzurra, Broncos, Salkeld y El Remanso.●

22 Carat gold for the British Open The Gold Cup for the British Open is held at Cowdray Park Polo Club as vibrantly as ever.The traditional tournament, one of the most prestigious and one of the richest in history on the international polo scene following over 50 years of competition, involves 17 teams with handicaps of up to 22 goals, giving their all to win the coveted trophy, the Gold Cup. ast year the winners were Loro Piana, made up of Alfio Marchini, Juan Martín Nero, David Stirling Jr and Jamie Peel, who return this year to defend their title with the same line-up apart from newcomer William Beresford, a youngster of 18, who replaces Peel. However, Ellerston will not be there to seek revenge for their defeat in last year’s final to Loro Piana by 11 goals to 10, which deprived them of the English season double (they had just won the Queen’s Cup). But two of their players, the Pieres brothers, Gonzalo and Facundo, will be involved this season, playing for La Bamba de Areco, and the strong Apes Hill and Sumaya quartets will be present having battled it out in the final of the Queen’s Cup at Guards. These are just some of the teams and players who, as always, arrive at Cowdray to deploy all of their talent and fight for the prestigious Gold Cup. The new feature in this 2009 tournament will be the presence of a new team: Cowdray Vikings, with Lila Pearson, sister-in-law of Lord Cowdray, leading an international line-up of professionals Gastón Laulhé of Argentina, Rookie Baillieu of Australia and John Paul Clarkin of New Zealand.

With the first swings of the mallet, it is clear that the 2009 competition, in addition to the importance of the tournament itself, will have a great deal of excitement, good play and competitive matches. One thing for certain is that, with the potential of the teams involved, Loro Piana will have it anything but easy in their attempt to defend their title, and any team wanting to reach the coveted final will have to give it their all. The competition The tournament began on June 23 and almost 40 matches will be held, culminating in the grand final on Sunday July 19 on the main field at Cowrdray Park Polo Club. Europa fue sede por primera vez en su historia de un partido de 80 goles: «The Perfect Polo Match» que tuvo cita en el elegante Polo de Paris gustín Merlos, Juan Martín Nero, Mariano Aguerre, Marcos Heguy, Gonzalito y Facundo Pieres, Pablo Mac Donough, Miguel Novillo Astrada, Bartolomé Castagnola y Lucas Monteverde estuvieron presentes

en la capital francesa para este magnífico evento. La exhibición dividió a los genios del polo en dos equipos: Granaderos y Patricios.

Cerca de dos mil personas vivieron un evento excepcionalmente bien organizado, en una tarde que mezclo nubes y sol y que con el espectáculo brindado por los astros del polo mundial «the Perfect Polo Match» fue realmente perfecto.

Granaderos se impuso por 11 a 10 siendo Facundo Pieres el goleador del partido con seis conquistas para su equipo en un encuentro jugado a 6 chukkers. Durante la entrega de premios hicieron uso de la palabra el Presidente de la Federación Francesa de Polo, Jean Luc Chartier, el Presidente de la Asociación Argentina de Jugadores de Polo, Ramón Franco y el Embajador Argentino en París, Luis Ureta . Todos los jugadores recibieron un lujoso mate realizado por el artista Juan Carlos Pallarols. Además los ganadores se llevaron la copa y un reloj Hublot. Tras la entrega de premios fue el turno de la solidaridad con remates de esculturas de caballos de polo de los artistas Martiniano Arce, Eduardo Pla y Nora Iniesta que tuvieron como objetivo recaudar fondos a beneficio del Hospital Fernández de Argentina. ●

The exhibition divided the geniuses of polo into two teams: Granaderos and Patricios. Around 2,000 people witnessed this exceptionally well-organised event on an afternoon of cloud and sunshine, on which the spectacle offered by the stars of world polo, ‘The Perfect Polo Match’, was indeed truly perfect. Granaderos won the game by 11 goals to 10 with Facundo Pieres top-scoring with 6 goals for his team in a 6-chukka match. In the prize-giving ceremony, there were speeches from the chairman of the French Polo Federation, Jean Luc Chartier, the chairman of the Argentine Polo Players’ Association, Ramón Franco and the Argentine ambassador in Paris, Luis Ureta. All of the players received a luxurious maté gourd created by the artist Juan Carlos Pallarols. The winners also received a cup and a Hublot watch. Following the prize ceremony, a charity event was held in which polo horse sculptures by the artists Martiniano Arce, Eduardo Pla and Nora Iniesta were auctioned to raise money for Argentina’s Hospital Fernández. ●

Nueve formaciones de hasta 12 goles de handicap disputaron el torneo mas importante del club en el primer semestre, ya que en septiembre el tradicional Open de France eleva el nivel a 16 goles y se convierte en el «rendez vous» francés en Chantilly. La victoria de In The Wings En la cancha de honor, la número uno, se jugó la final en la cual In The Wings venció a Aries por 9 a 6 goles tras cinco chukkers. La actuación del equipo del patrón André Fabre fue contundente. Ganó los cinco partidos que le permitieron acceder a la final por varios goles de diferencia y no estuvo por debajo en el marcador ni siquiera en un sólo chukker de todos los encuentros disputados. Frente a Polo de Deauville ganó 10 a 2; ante Santa Clara lo hizo por 13 a 5; contra Aries (partido por la clasificación ) 9 - 4, a REI 11 a 4 y en la semifinal doblegó a Peters 10 - 7. ¿La fórmula del éxito? una combinación perfecta armada por el polo mananger, Diego Zavaleta, que trabaja para Andre Fabre desde hace mas de una década. La habilidad de Pancho Bensadon, que venía en plena forma del US Open junto a dos jóvenes talentosos y con mucho futuro. 48

Justamente de estos « chicos» nos hablo André Fabre: «Pablito LLorente (18 años) y Florent Garaud (16) dejaron todo de sí en la cancha, son unos fenomenos ! Se creo entre los cuatro integrantes del equipo un clima genial para jugar y pasarla bien» «Y con Pancho jugando bien y super bien montado (la yegua Cuerda en la mitad del segundo y quinto chukker nos dejó a todos con la boca abierta!) llegamos al tan esperado resultado», agregó Fabre. Aries, «los naranjas» del patron Bruno Bensoussan, que quedó segundo en el torneo, accedió merecidamente a la final ya que solo perdió contra In The Wings en las clasificaciones. Martin Sirvent, que hace 15 años juega con Bruno para Aries, junto a Sebastian Petracchi y Joaquin Maiquez, formaron un equipo unido, con gran complicidad, la que fue mejorando a lo largo del torneo. Bruno Bensoussan manifestó a La Bocha una vez culminado el torneo que : «me diverti!, Hago prevalecer la amistad a la hora de formar mi equipo. No me gustan las personalidades fuertes que a cualquier precio buscan la

performance. Nosotros nos entendimos bien durante todo el torneo» En tercera posición colocado quedó Castel, del patron Philippe Fatien que le gano a Peters, de Véronique Empain, por 11 a 3. La Señora Bensoussan hizo entrega de espléndidos relojes Technomarine a los equipos. La copa Laversine fue entregada a In The Wings por el Marquis Pierre de Ségur que representó a Nathaniel de Rothschild junto al presidente del Club de Polo de Chantilly, Patrick Guerrand-Hermès.

tomó recientemente las riendas del club para potenciar lo que ya es un lugar de excepción para jugar al Polo a solo 35 kilómetros de Paris. «Tenemos un nuevo parking, nuevos carteles indicadores, nueva decoración en las oficinas. Y para recibir mejor a los equipos que vienen para participar de nuestros torneos en el 2010 se construirán más caballerizas de modo que todas serán fijas». Hoy nuestro club ofrece 3 canchas sólo para prácticas y reservamos otras 6 canchas para los torneos, ésto es un verdadero diferencial. En Chantilly están jugando cada vez más patrones del extranjero a los que queremos darles lo mejor en infraestructura y organizacion». Peters el equipo de Variot es un

ejemplo de «glamour français», sus cabellerizas siempre están impecables, en sus camionetas su logo brilla, sus petiseros van y vienen teniendo todo extraordinariamente cuidado, ¿Cómo hace? es el gen suizo de la perfección que Olivier Variot imprime en todo lo que hace, y que ya se vislumbra en el Club de Chantilly. Una lesión no le permitió ser el capitán de Peters este primer semestre del 2009. Por esa razón, su pareja Véronique Empain, polista en ascenso, se convirtió en la única mujer «capitana» de La Coupe Laversine. Véronique cada día juega mejor y quedó bien demostrado en las canchas ya que su equipo llegó a las semifinales de esta copa.

In The Wings, le champion incontesté de la « Coupe LAVERSINE Challenge ÉLIE DE ROTHSCHILD » La seconde édition de la Coupe Laversine Challenge Élie de Rothschild s’est déroulée du 16 au 31 mai au Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly athaniel de Rothschild rend hommage à son père, le baron Élie de Rothschild, en créant cette coupe qui a fait vibrer le public au cours de matchs très disputés pendant trois week-ends consécutifs. Neuf équipes d’un handicap allant jusqu’à 12 goals ont disputé le tournoi le plus important du premier semestre du club, alors qu’en portant la barre à 16 goals, le traditionnel Open de France qui se tiendra en septembre devient le rendez-vous le plus prisé de Chantilly. à 6 au terme de cinq chukkers, s’est jouée sur le terrain d’honneur numéro un. La performance de l’équipe menée par André Fabre fut éclatante. Avec plusieurs goals de différence, elle a remporté les cinq matchs qui lui ont permis d’accéder à la finale. Au score, elle n’a jamais été en position d’infériorité sur l’ensemble des parties disputées, même au cours d’une seule période. Elle a battu Polo de Deauville par 10 à 2, Santa Clara par 13 à 5, Aries (poule de classification) par 9 à 4, REI par 11 à 4 et Peters par 10 à 7 lors de la demi-finale. Le secret de cette réussite ? À propos de ces étoiles montantes, André Fabre a déclaré : « Pablito LLorente (18 ans) et Florent Garaud (16 ans) ont mis tout leur cœur dans les parties, ils ont joué phénoménalement ! À la fin du tournoi, Bruno Bensoussan a déclaré à La Bocha : « Je me suis beaucoup amusé ! Pour moi, l’amitié prévaut au moment de former une équipe. Je n’aime pas les fortes personnalités qui recherchent la performance à tout prix. Une parfaite entente au sein de l’équipe fut omniprésente au cours du tournoi. » Troisième au classement, Castel, menée par le capitaine Philippe Fatien, a battu l’équipe Peters de Véronique Empain par 11 à 3. Madame Bensoussan a remis les magnifiques montres Technomarine aux équipes. La coupe Laversine a été remise à l’équipe In The Wings par le marquis Pierre de Ségur au nom de Nathaniel de Rothschild et en présence du président du Polo Club du Domaine Chantilly, monsieur Patrick Guerrand-Hermès. Pour que l’hommage rendu au baron Élie de Rothschild soit complet, M. Patrick Guerrand-Hermès a fait preuve d’élégance en arborant les couleurs traditionnelles que porte la famille de Rothschild pendant les courses de chevaux, à savoir le bleu et le jaune. Le Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly a, une nouvelle fois, confirmé sa réputation de « Très Chic ».

OLIVIER VARIOT ET LES RÉNOVATIONS DU POLO CLUB DU DOMAINE DE CHANTILLY Le club fait l’objet de rénovations et les changements sont déjà tangibles. À ce sujet, La Bocha European Polo s’est entretenu avec Olivier Variot, le responsable des travaux de modernisation qu’on a pu apprécier pendant le tournoi. Membre du Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly, le capitaine titulaire de l’équipe Peters, a récemment pris les rênes du club afin de promouvoir ce lieu déjà exceptionnel permettant de jouer au polo à seulement 35 kilomètres de Paris. « Nous disposons d’un nouveau parking, de nouveaux panneaux indicateurs et d’une

nouvelle décoration dans les bureaux, et pour recevoir dans de meilleures conditions les équipes participant à nos tournois en 2010, nous construirons plus d’écuries modernes, toutes fixes. À ce jour, notre club compte 3 terrains uniquement réservés aux practices et 6 autres terrains sont destinés aux tournois, ce qui fait notre distinction. De plus en plus d’équipes étrangères viennent jouer à Chantilly et nous nous devons de leur donner ce qu’il y a de mieux en termes d’infrastructures et d’organisation. » Peters, l’équipe d’Olivier Variot, est un exemple de glamour français avec ses écuries toujours impeccables, ses camionnettes au logo étincelant et le vaet-vient incessant de ses “petiseros” qui

Entre las ciudades suizas de Ginebra y Nyon, y en un entorno privilegiado, se encuentra Le Domaine de Veytay, más conocido en el ambiente del polo como Polo Club Veytay.

Polo Club de Veytay, un Masters de amistad

a familia Luginbühl lleva con mucho cariño las 116 hectáreas que conforman este espectacular campo que da vida al polo y a otras actividades relacionadas con el caballo y la agricultura. Yasmine, Yves, Simon y Martin son los responsables de que en el Polo Club de Veytay se combine a la perfección la tranquilidad, el buen ambiente y la competición. Ésta última tiene su momento de mayor relevancia en el mes de agosto con la disputa del Masters de Ginebra del cual Veytay es sede desde el 2000. Antes lo fue del Geneva Polo Open cuando por 1987 comenzó a desarrollar el polo. Son más de 20 años de actividades relacionadas con el Polo pero la historia de Le Domaine de Veytay comienza muchísimo antes. “Lo recibieron mis abuelos como regalo de boda por parte de mi bisabuelo y era un campo que nadie quería. Se compró en 1917 y muy barato”, relata Yves Luginbühl. “Tras desarrollarlo y trabajarlo durante años se fue continuando con mi padre, primero, y luego conmigo, siempre enfocado a la agrícultura”, agrega.

Menta, hongo japonés fueron algunos de los “experimentos” que se cultivaron en las tierras de Veytay hasta que Yves se fue a trabajar a un campo en Córdoba, Argentina durante seis meses y el polo, del cual sabía poco y nada, se le cruzó en el camino. “En ese entonces, finales de los años 80, el polo para mí no existía, para mi el polo era el Príncipe Charles y nada más”, recuerda. Durante su estadía en Argentina y en sus idas y vueltas a Suiza, conoció a Juan D`Elia, “un loco total pero que sabe mucho de caballos y con quien aprendí muchísimo”. “Él se dio cuenta que Veytay era un lugar ideal para vender caballos para el resto de Europa y para armar una cancha de polo y así fue como me hizo comenzar, en año 1987, la historia con este deporte”, agrega. Su primer contacto con el polo coincidió con una época complicada para el campo y eso em-

pujó un poco más al dueño de Veytay a desarrollar en sus tierras esta disciplina. Comenzó con tres caballos, bocha de cuero en el rastrojo de trigo y jugando tres contra tres para tiempo después empezar lo que hoy es la cancha 1. Un galpón, hecho por su padre con viejos postes de ferrocarril, la sede, donde antes había chanchos, y boxes, que llegaron de regalo tras un concurso hípico en Ginebra, le dieron forma al Club de Polo. Luego fueron llegando más caballos y también interesados, como un banquero suizo, en comprarlos, y ahí se fue sucediendo todo muy rápidamente hasta encontrarse organizando polo de patrones. “En 1991 se hizo la cancha 2, luego llegó John Manconi e hizo un torneo con la presencia de la Duquesa de York y con 7 mil personas en las gradas. Todo fue muy rápido”, recuerda Yves. Pero la presentación oficial del Polo Club de Veytay fue en 1989 con un torneo de 12 goles del cual formaron parte cuatro equipos y entre los que estaban los profesionales “Morocho” Fernández Llorente, los hermanos Sirvent y Pepe Riglos. “Hasta que un buen día Juan D`Elía desapareció en Argentina y yo me quedé con la “herencia” del polo”. Open, Masters y amigos De principios de los 90 hasta el 2000, Polo Club de Veytay organizó el Geneva Polo Open y el polo de tres contra tres se transformó de pronto en carpas e invitados vip, marcas de primer nivel, gradas desbordadas, equipos y caballos por doquier. “En 1998 comenzó a complicarse un poco. La movida social y deportiva, moviendo más de 140 caballos, gente, carpas, invitados vip, y con los patrones pidiendo más y más, me desbordó un poco. Yo no quería, y no quiero, tener socios con el polo y que se desborde la capacidad del club”. Por eso, un año más tarde, Yves les propuso a los patrones que jugaban en Veytay crear una Asociación para organizar de mejor forma los eventos. “En el

La Bocha European Polo 2000 organizaron el Open, donde jugaron 9 equipos durante un fin de semana en la cancha 1 y bajo una lluvia torrencial. No me dejaron ni un pedazo de pasto y ahí dije basta y se me quitaron las ganas de seguir con el polo. Me desbordó”. Tras un año “sabático”, Yves, ya con la colaboración de sus hijos Simon y Martin, decidió volver a las raíces y recuperar el polo de amigos con el cual se inició Veytay. Y si bien apareció en escena el Masters de Ginebra las experiencias anteriores le sirvieron de ejemplo y todo se organizó de forma distinta para llegar a lo que es hoy, el evento más importante de Suiza tras la temporada de nieve en St. Moritz. “Mantuve una conversación con mis hijos, Simón y Martin, y les plantee la posibilidad de tener una cancha y jugar al polo entre amigos y cada cual dedicarse a lo suyo. Pero ellos nacieron con la bocha de polo y yo con la remolacha!!. Por ese motivo fue que seguimos organizando torneos, y en particular el Masters, pero la historia fue muy diferente a los años 90”, explica Yves.

La “diferencia” radicó, principalmente, en que Yves, su mujer Yasmine, “quien me ayudó muchísimo”, Simon y Martin comenzaron a manejar todo lo relativo al polo y ello le dio un ambiente familiar y un cariño por el trabajo que pocos clubes tienen. “Volvimos un poco al polo que teníamos hasta el año 1998 y que nos dimos cuenta habíamos perdido. Estaba incómodo y ahora por suerte lo estamos recuperando”, relata el propietario de Veytay. Ello, sumado al Masters, la cereza del pastel, hace que Polo Club de Veytay tenga un buen funcionamiento, con polistas de nivel similar y un ambiente donde reina la amistad y la sana competencia. “Vamos logrando el objetivo. Con mis hijos podemos jugar al polo con amigos, vincular a más gente con el polo en un buen ambiente y desarrollar eventos como el Masters para mantener el nivel de competencia”. Lo que comenzó como un regalo a sus abuelos es hoy una realidad de 116 hectáreas a pocos minutos del centro de Ginebra y en un marco incomparable con, entre otras cosas, 3 canchas de polo, una cancha de Arena Polo, pista de entrenamiento, 116 boxes y un club house.●

Between the city of Geneva and the town of Nyon in Switzerland, nestling in a privileged setting, lies La Domaine de Veytay, better known within the polo scene as Polo Club Veytay he Luginbühl family takes great care over the 116 hectares that make up this spectacular space which brings polo and other horserelated and agricultural activities to life. Yasmine, Yves, Simon and Martin are the people responsible for ensuring that Polo Club de Veytay perfectly combines tranquillity, a good atmosphere and competition. The latter comes into its own in august with the Geneva Masters, which Veytay has hosted since 2000. Before that it was the venue for the Geneva Polo Open when they began to develop the sport in 1987. So the estate has been involved in polorelated activities for over 20 years, but the history of La Domaine de Veytay goes back much further. “My grandparents received it as a wedding gift from by great-grandfather and it was land that nobody wanted. It was bought in 1917 very cheaply”, says Yves Luginbühl. “After developing it and working on it for years, my father continued with it and then I did, with the focus always

on agriculture”, he adds. Mint and Japanese mushrooms were some of the ‘experiments’ cultivated on Veytay land until Yves went to work on an estate in Cordoba, Argentina, for six months, and polo, of which he knew little or nothing, crossed his path. “At that time, in the late 80s, as far as I was concerned polo did not exist; for me polo was Prince Charles and nothing more” he remembers. During his stay in Argentina and his return trips to Switzerland he met Juan D’Elia, “a complete madman but someone who knows a lot about horses and from whom I learned a great deal”. “He realised that Veytay was an ideal place to sell horses for the rest of Europe and to set up a polo ground, which is how I started out in the polo world in 1987”, he adds. His first contact with polo coincided with a difficult period for the estate, which was an added incentive for the owner of Veytay to develop the sport on his land. He started with three horses, a leather ball on a wheat stubble field and playing three-against-three, before some time later starting to build what is now Field 1. A storehouse, built by his father from old railway posts and previously home to pigs, used as the headquarters, and stalls received as a gift following an equestrian competition in Geneva gave shape to the Club de Polo. More horses then arrived and also people, like a Swiss banker, interested in buying them, and everything evolved quickly from then on until they found themselves organising polo for patrons. “In 1991, Field 2 was made, and then John Manconi came and organised a tournament with the presence of the Duchess of York and 7,000

people in the stands. It all happened very quickly”, Yves remembers. But Polo Club de Veytay’s debut was in 1989 with a 12-goal tournament involving four teams which included the professionals ‘Morocho’ Fernández Llorente, the Sirvent brothers and Pepe Riglos. “Until one fine day, Juan D’Elía disappeared to Argentina and I was left with the polo ‘legacy’”.

The Open, the Masters and friends From the early 90s until 2000, Polo Club de Veytay organised the Geneva Polo Open and the three-a-side polo was soon transformed into marquees and VIP guests, top brands, packed stands and teams and horses in abundance. “In 1998 it started to get complicated. The social and sporting aspects, organising over 140 horses plus people, marquees and VIP guests, and with

the patrons demanding more and more, I was a bit overstretched. I did not and do not want to have partners in polo and have the club exceeding its capacity”. This was why, a year later, Yves proposed to the patrons that played at Veytay that they form an Association to organise the events in the best manner. “In 2000 they organised the Open, in which nine teams played over a weekend on Field 1 and under torrential rain. They left me without a blade of pasture and that was when I had had enough; I had lost the desire to continue with the polo. I was overburdened”. After a ‘sabbatical’ year, Yves, now with the help of his sons Simon and Martin, decided to return to their roots and recover the ‘polo among friends’ with which Veytay had started out. And although the Geneva Masters appeared on the scene, previous experiences were taken into account and everything was organised differently until it became what it is today, the most important event in Switzerland after the snow season in St. Moritz. “I had a conversation with my sons, Simon and Martin, and suggested the possibility of having a field and playing polo among friends, with everyone doing their own thing. But they were born with the polo ball, while I was born with beetroot! So we continued organising tournaments, and in particular the Masters, but it was a very different story to the 90s”, explains Yves. The difference lies, mainly, in that Yves, his wife Yasmine, “who helps me a great deal”, Simon and Martin started handling everything to do with the polo and gave it a family-oriented atmosphere and put an affection into the work which few clubs posses. “We kind of returned to the polo that we had until 1998, which we realised we had lost. I felt uneasy and now, fortunately, we are recovering it”, says the owner of Veytay. This, combined with the Masters, the cherry on the cake, ensures that Polo Club de Veytay works well, with polo players of a similar standard and an atmosphere in which friendship and healthy competition prevail. “We are achieving our objective. With my sons we can play polo among friends, bring more people into polo in a good atmosphere and organise events like the Masters to keep up the level of competition”. That which started as a gift to his grandparents is now an estate of 116 hectares a few minutes from the centre of Geneva and an incomparable setting with, among other things, three polo fields, an arena polo ground, a training ground, 116 stalls and a clubhouse.●

Los éxitos comenzaron a guiñarle el ojo en los últimos años a este polista inglés de 31 años y que respira polo prácticamente desde la cuna. Luke Tomlinson ha alcanzado, a base de esfuerzo y muy buen juego, un sitio en la elite del polo mundial. s profeta en su tierra, condición exclusiva para elegidos, ya que además de ser en la actualidad el mejor polista del Reino Unido, es el capitán de la selección inglesa y lleva varias temporadas en Argentina jugando al más alto nivel. Pero como si todo ello fuera poco, este jugador de 31 años, polista desde la cuna, viene de ganar la Queens Cup con el equipo de Apes Hill, junto a su hermano Mark, su compatriota Charlie Hanbury y el argentino Juan Gris Zavaleta. Tomlinson conversó con La Bocha European Polo tras conquistar el prestigioso trofeo en la Queens Ground del Guards Polo Club.

¿Es el triunfo más importante de su carrera como polista? La verdad que es muy importante y llega en un momento especial también. Tuve un par de años muy buenos pero hacía mucho que no llegaba a una final y es muy especial para mí ganar la Queens Cup y estoy muy contento por ello.

¿Hace mucho que se viene preparando para lograr un título tan importante? Estoy intentando hace dos años lograr este premio con Apes Hill y si bien tampoco tenemos una gran organización, nuestro patrón, Sir Charles Williams, nos trata muy bien y nos da rienda para que crezcamos como equipo y para organizarnos mejor. Y si hemos logrado esto y además personalmente estoy muy bien montado tanto en Inglaterra como en Argentina es en gran parte gracias a él. Sir Charles Williams es un ex jugador de polo y figura del deporte inglés radicado en Barbados.Creó el equipo de Apes Hill hace tres años y siempre con mayoría de polistas ingleses en su formación.

En su corta vida en la alta competencia, Apes Hill ganó la Copa Subsidiaria de la Queens Cup en el 2008 y este año ya subió a lo más alto del podio.

¿La táctica y planiﬁcación fue donde se ganó la “batalla” de la Queens Cup?

Tras ganar la Queens Cup, ¿cuáles son sus objetivos para lo que resta de la temporada? La Queens Cup fue muy dura, los caballos lo sintieron y tenemos poco respiro antes de encarar la Gold Cup (NdeR: se comenzó a jugar al cierre de esta edición).

Teníamos un muy buen equipo enfrente, muy bien organizado y que venía jugando muy buen polo. Llegaban embalados tras ganarle a Dubai en semifinales y con una fase clasificatoria muy buena también.

Pero vamos a jugar el Abierto Británico de la misma forma como encaramos la Queens, yendo partido a partido, sin pretensiones excesivas y lógicamente con las ganas de repetir un título tan importante como el que ganamos en Guards.

Por todo ello se planificó muy bien la final, aunque también debo confesar que lo hicimos en todo el torneo. Para ello fue clave la ayuda de mi primo Will Lucas, con quien siempre buscamos tácticas y planificamos de la mejor forma los partidos.

¿El Abierto Argentino?

Sabíamos que la final era un partido muy difícil, pero estábamos convencidos de que podíamos ganarlo.

¿Jugar sin patrón fue una ventaja extra para Apes Hill? Creo que no y la final lo dejó bien claro. Fue un partido sumamente parejo y que se definió en chukker suplementario.

Mi meta cuando empecé a dedicarme al polo era jugar la Cámara de Diputados y lo logré. Después de cumplir mi primer objetivo empecé a pensar en el Abierto Argentino y lo logré también, pese a que no lo podía creer en su momento. Ahora mi objetivo es formar parte de un equipo más competitivo, uno de los mejores, para llegar a ganarlo en alguna oportunidad.

¿Lo ve cercano? Lo veo alcanzable pero se te tiene que dar la oportunidad.●

Además es un equipo muy fuerte donde su patrón fue 4 goles no hace mucho tiempo, Milo Fernández aporta muchísimo con su experiencia e Hilario Ulloa e Ignus Du Plessis están jugando por encima de su handicap en Inglaterra.

¿Su juego ha evolucionado mucho en estos últimos años, a qué lo atribuye? Ayuda mucho jugar en Argentina, donde sin dudas está el mejor polo del mundo. Te da todo como para crecer como polista. Jugar con los mejores y competir en los mejores torneos y contra los mejores polistas es clave para mejorar el nivel de juego. Luke y su hermano Mark pasan gran parte del año en Argentina donde tienen campo en 25 de Mayo.

¿Como se siente un inglés en Argentina y jugando al polo? Nos tratan muy bien y además tengo muy buena relación con los profesionales. Además de tener campo allá cuando se juega la temporada de polo en Inglaterra recibimos todos los años a muchos profesionales, así que nuestra casa parece la embajada Argentina. “Su” casa no es otra que Beaufort Polo Club, propiedad de sus padres Simon y Claire Tomlinson, la mejor polista de todos los tiempos. Allí comenzó con el taco y la bocha a los 10 años, mismo camino que eligieron su hermano Mark y su hermana Emma. Su abuelo, Arthur Lucas, fundó un club de polo en Hertfordshire, y sus padres re fundaron Beaufort Polo Club en 1989 por lo cual el destino de sus hijos estaba marcado junto a una cancha de polo. En Beaufort juega habitualmente el Príncipe Carlos de Inglaterra y sus hijos William y Harry, con quienes Luke mantiene una gran amistad.

In recent years success has started to come the way of this 31-year-old English polo player who has lived and breathed polo practically from birth. Luke Tomlinson has, on the basis of hard work and very good play, reached a seat of honour among the elite of world polo. e is a prophet in his own land, a status reserved for just a chosen few, since in addition to being the best UK polo player at present, he is captain of the English national side and has spent several seasons in Argentina playing at the highest level. But as if this were not enough, this 31-year-old polo player from birth has just won the Queen’s Cup with the Apes Hill team alongside his brother Mark, his fellow countryman Charlie

Hanbury and the Argentine Juan Gris Zavaleta. Tomlinson talked to La Bocha European Polo after winning the prestigious trophy at the Guards Polo Club Queen’s Ground.

Is this the most important victory of your career as a polo player? It’s very important and it also came at a special moment. I have had a good couple of years but it had been a long time since I

reached a final and winning the Queen’s Cup is very special for me; I’m delighted.

How long have you been preparing to win such an important title? For two years I’ve been trying to win this trophy with Apes Hill and, although our organisation isn’t very big, our patron Sir Charles Williams treats us well and gives us free rein to grow as a team and organise ourselves better. The fact that we have achieved this and that I’m

personally very well mounted both in England and Argentina is to a large extent thanks to him. Sir Charles Williams is a former polo layer and an important figure in the English game based in Barbados. He created the Apes Hill team three years ago and always with a majority of English players. In our short life at the highest level of competition, Apes Hill has won the Subsidiary Cup to the Queen’s Cup in 2008 and this year climbed to the top of the podium.

Were tactics and planning where the Queen’s Cup ‘battle’ was won? We were facing a very good and very well-organised team which had been playing very good polo. They were on a high after winning the semifinals in Dubai and after a very good qualifying stage as well. Because of this the final was very well planned, although I must admit that the whole tournament in general was too. A key part of this was the help of my cousin Will Lucas, with whom we always look for tactics and plan the matches as best as possible. We knew the final was a difficult match, but we were certain that we could win it.

Was playing without a patron an advantage for Apes Hill?

After winning the Queen’s Cup, what are your objectives for the rest of the season? The Queen’s Cup was very tough; the horses felt it and we don’t have much breathing space before the Gold Cup [which began as this edition went to print]. But we are going to play the British Open in the same way as the Queen’s, going from match to match, without getting ahead of ourselves and obviously with a desire to win another title as important as the one we won at Guards.

And the Argentine Open?

I don’t think so and the final made this very clear. It was an extremely even match and was decided in the extra chukka. Also, they were a very strong team whose patron was a four-goaler not long ago, Milo Fernández contributes a great deal with his experience and Hilario Ulloa and Ignus Du Plessis are playing above their handicap in England.

My goal when I started playing polo was the play in the Cámara de Diputados and I achieved it. After meeting my first objective I started thinking about the Argentine Open and I achieved that too, although I couldn’t believe it at the time. Now my objective is to be part of a more competitive team, one of the best, in order to try and win it if the opportunity arises.

Your game has developed a lot in recent years; what do you attribute this to?

Playing in Argentina helps a lot because it’s undoubtedly where the best polo in the world is played. It gives you everything you need to grow as a polo player. Playing against the best and competing in the best tournaments and against the best polo players is a key factor for improving your standard of play. El efecto beneﬁcioso del movimiento del caballo se conoce desde hace varios siglos G. Etcheverry Love Horse, Fundación Sta. Maria, Salvador Moreno

os griegos aconsejaban practicar equitación con el fin de mejorar el estado anímico de los enfermos incurables, incluso el propio Hipócrates, 460 AC ya hablaba del saludable trote de los caballos. Más tarde, en el siglo XVII, la medicina utilizaba la equitación como método para combatir la gota, enfermedad que por entonces causaba auténticos estragos. En 1875 el neurólogo francés Chassiagnac descubrió que un caballo en movimiento mejora el equilibrio, el movimiento articular y el control muscular de los pacientes. Experimentó con esta idea y concluyó que montar a caballo mejoraba el estado de ánimo y que era particularmente beneficioso para los parapléjicos y pacientes con trastornos neurológicos. Datos oficiales recogen que la primera participación terapéutica de un caballo en un hospital fue cuando Inglaterra esta estaba en guerra y cuando una dama inglesa llevó sus propios caballos a un centro de salud para disminuir el aburrimiento de los enfermos. Tras varios días repitiendo la misma acción notaron que los pacientes que montaban (heridos de guerra, amputados, lesionados) evolucionaban más rápido.

Con el término Hipoterapia (procedente del griego “Hippos”, caballo), se denomina la alternativa terapéutica basada en la utilización del movimiento multidimensional del caballo para el tratamiento de diferentes afecciones físicas y mentales.

Pero el auténtico auge de la hipoterapia en Europa surge a partir de los años 50, siendo Alemania el principal motor de su desarrollo.

El modelo clásico alemán de equinoterapia es el más usado ya que plantea la utilización creativa de determinados medios, dando lugar a la iniciativa y la idea propia para generar el método más conveniente, de acuerdo a la necesidad y la posibilidad concreta. En la actualidad, México y Brasil son los máximos exponentes latinoamericanos en esta terapia.

El paciente y el caballo establecen una relación

De esta forma, se convierte en el único tratamiento por medio del cual el paciente está expuesto a movimientos de vaivén que son enormemente similares a los que realiza el cuerpo humano al caminar. Esto supone que el paciente no se enfrenta pasivamente al movimiento, sino que se ve obligado a reaccionar frente a una serie de estímulos producidos por el trote del caballo y por ello debe adaptarse y responder frente múltiples y diferentes sensaciones. Se produce así una reacción que no es sólo muscular sino también sensorial que afecta a todo el cuerpo del paciente, quien experimenta una mejoría global.

En cuanto a las sesiones de hipoterapia, el primer paso radica en establecer una relación entre el paciente y el animal. Si el paciente no confía en el caballo, no podrá estar relajado sobre él y en consecuencia la terapia será ineficaz. Los especialistas en esta técnica resaltan que el objetivo de la hipoterapia nunca es que el paciente aprenda a montar, sino simplemente a colocarse sobre el caballo, acompañado en todo momento por el fisioterapeuta quien vigilará que se adopten las posiciones que faciliten la circulación sanguínea, mejoren el equilibrio y el sentido espacial. Las formas de asentarse el paciente sobre el caballo pueden ser diversas, dependiendo del tipo de estimulación que se necesite en cada caso (incluso se montará hacia atrás). Antes de montar a caballo, el paciente realizará una sesión de calentamiento en el gimnasio, que preparará a los músculos y articulaciones para el siguiente ejercicio físico. También después de montar se pasará por el gimnasio, esta vez con el objetivo de obtener una correcta relajación muscular.

Love Horse, una asociación sin ánimo de lucro y que subvenciona el 100% de las terapias, tiene una estrecha colaboración con la Universidad de Barcelona para impartir los primeros cursos de formación en Equinoterapia. Son cursos intensivos de 30 horas de teórica y práctica impartidos por profesionales del sector y dirigidos a profesionales y estudiantes de los campos de la salud y la educacion, como también a profesionales de la equitación Por otra parte, en Sotogrande, Cádiz, se encuentra El Centro de Hipoterapia Fundación Santa María Polo. Este centro comenzó a funcionar este año en los primeros días de mayo, y con un solo usuario. Al día de hoy ya tiene 24, lo que ha supuesto un crecimiento muy positivo pese a su corta existencia. El Centro, gestionado por la Fundación, funciona actualmente en las canchas de Río del Santa María Polo Club pero ya se está trabajando para establecerse a corto plazo en un nuevo centro, Finca La Alcaidesa, un espacio natural con una capacidad y recursos mayores que permitirán impartir hasta cien sesiones de hipoterapia a la semana. “Aunque la mayoría de los usuarios son niños, tenemos a seis personas mayores de edad con diferentes deficiencias (espina bífida, parálisis cerebral) que son un reto tan apasionante e interesante como los niños, pero mucho más difícil de abordar. Están encantados y de momento “todo el que prueba sigue”, lo cual es muy significativo”, detalla Rafael Reina, Director del Centro. “Las perspectivas a corto plazo son muy buenas. De hecho, de seguir así pronto vamos a llegar al número máximo de usuarios que podemos atender (alrededor de 50) en estas instalaciones, por lo que insto a los interesados a que contacten con nosotros pronto para que podamos incluirles en nuestra programación”, agregó.●

HORSES, the best ally for a BETTER LIFE

Therapeutic horseback riding is the name given to the alternative therapy based on the use of the multidimensional movement of horses for the treatment of various physical and mental conditions he beneficial effect of the movement of the horse has been known for centuries. The classic German model of equine therapy is the most commonly used as it prescribes the creative use of certain aids, promoting initiative and independent thought as a way of finding the most suitable method, in accordance with the needs and possibilities in question. Currently, Mexico and Brazil are the main exponents of this therapy in Latin America. “Climb on the back of a horse to smile again” is the motto of one of the pioneering organisations for the activity in Argentina: the Argentine Association of Equine Activities for People with Disabilities (Spanish initials AAAEPAD), which promoted the first International Therapeutic Riding Conference. Benefits and sessions Throughout its evolution, riding therapy has demonstrated its positive results and has been shown to be effective in people with

problems off all kinds, including multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, autism, Down’s syndrome, spina bifida, brain damage, neurodegenerative illnesses, orthopaedic illnesses, anorexia, bulimia, chronic illnesses and disabilities of all kinds (physical and mental), to name just a few. Something which can be described as a simple activity, riding a horse, provides a number of benefits because, in the case of therapeutic riding, it helps to prevent the patients’ isolation from the world, positions them in the same situation as a healthy rider and helps them to overcome their fear and improve their confidence and ability to concentrate, while also alleviating physical and emotional stresses. All of this is achieved thanks to the fact that the horse has proven itself to be an exceptionally perceptive animal. The horse immediately realises that the person who is riding it is different to the rest and will therefore behave differently to how it would with other riders. Riding therapy makes use of the movement of the horse to stimulate the

- Physiological effects: increase in ability to perceive stimuli as a result of being in a situation of movement. - Physic effects: attention, concentration and motivation in response to other movements are stimulated. An increase in self-esteem and confidence in oneself are of fundamental importance. - Physical effects: the horse has a body temperature and volume far superior to humans, which means a significant transmission of warmth and solidity when hugged and touched by a child. Improves balance and mobility. - The movement of the horse also provides the major advantage of offering an enormous variety of cadential rhythms, which means, from a therapeutic point of view, that the level of sensations that the patient receives can be regulated. -The horse transmits 110 different movements to the rider when trotting. There is not a single muscle or body area, from the coccyx to the head, which does not receive a stimulus. 30 minutes of riding is the equivalent of the same time spent walking in a healthy person. It has the same effect without having to take the load of the body, since it is transmitted by the animal. Riding therapy requires an active response from the patients who have to move their body to stretch, relax and improve coordination and balance. The patient and horse establish a harmonious relationship and act together. The code used in this relationship is one of affectivity, established thanks to reciprocal trust.

patients’ muscles and joints. This makes it the only treatment in which the patient is exposed to swaying movements that are very similar to those made by the human body when it walks. This means that the patient, rather than responding passively to the movement, is forced to react to a number of stimuli produced by the trotting of the horse and therefore adapt and respond to many different sensations. This produces a reaction which is not just muscular but also sensory, affecting the patient’s whole body and providing them with a feeling of overall improvement. As far as therapeutic riding sessions are concerned, the first step is to establish a relationship between the patient and the animal. If the patient does not trust the horse, he or she will not be able to relax while on its back and as a result the therapy will be ineffective. The specialists in this technique underline that the aim of riding therapy is never for the patient to learn to ride, but simply to mount the horse, accompanied at all times by the physiotherapist who will ensure that the patient adopts positions that facilitate blood circulation and improve balance and spatial awareness. The ways in which the patient sits on the horse vary depending on the type of stimulation needed in each case (the patient may even mount backwards). Before mounting the horse, the patient does a warm-up session in the gym to prepare the muscles and joints for physical exercise. After riding, the patient returns to the gym, this time in order to properly warm down the muscles. The association’s manager stresses that “our aim is to disseminate to value of therapeutic riding. Love Horse, a non-profit association which subsidises 100 % of the therapies, collaborates closely with the University of Barcelona to provide the first training courses in therapeutic riding. They are intensive 30-hour theoretical and practical courses taught by professionals in the industry and aimed at professionals and students in the fields of health and education, as well as riding professionals. Equally, Sotogrande, Cadiz province, is home to the Santa María Polo Riding Therapy Centre. This centre started out in early May with just one user and it now has 24, a very positive development given its short life.

The centre, which is run by the foundation, currently functions at Santa María Polo Club’s Río fields, but work is already being carried out to establish a new centre in the short term, at Finca La Alcaidesa, a natural space with a bigger capacity and more resources which will allow up to a hundred therapeutic riding sessions to be given every week. “Although the majority of users are children, we have six adults with various conditions (spina bifida, cerebral palsy) who are equally as exciting and interesting a challenge as the children, although much more difficult to treat. They are delighted and for the time being everyone who starts carries on, which is a very good sign”, explains Rafael Reina, the centre manager. “The prospects in the short term are very good. In fact, if we continue like this, soon we will reach the maximum number of users that we can treat (around 50) at these facilities, so I urge those interested to contact us soon so that we can include them in our schedule”, he added. ●

El aumento de categoría del certamen estival de Sotogrande en el Circuito Internacional de Polo, ahora catalogado como Gran Slam, junto al British Open de Cowdray Park y el US Open de Palm Beach, y sólo un peldaño por debajo de los torneos argentinos de la Triple Corona, no hace más que reaﬁrmar el compromiso por parte de Santa María Polo Club de ofrecer un evento de primerísimo nivel. l cierre de esta edición, el Torneo Internacional de Verano contará con 6 equipos en el Alto Handicap, 8 en el Mediano y 6 en el Bajo. Al igual que en ediciones anteriores se pondrán en juego las copas de Bronce, Plata y Oro. A la Copa de Oro de Alto Handicap se le agregará un nuevo equipo, Broncos, por lo cual el número de participantes se elevará a 7 aportando un plus al atractivo que ya de por sí presenta el certamen.

Los Pinos, sede principal Los Pinos, tras su espectacular transformación el año pasado, será sede principal del Alto Handicap, de los partidos más destacados del Mediano Handicap y de las finales en los tres niveles. De esta forma se concentrarán las actividades deportivas durante al menos 20 días en una sede que, además de sus espectaculares canchas, contará con una renovada zona comercial, con la presencia de las mejores marcas y empresas. También la zona del village (afuera del pabellón principal) tendrá un nuevo diseño y en el centro de dicho espacio se montará la zona de restauración que contará con variedad de menús.

Un día antes, sábado 29, será la gran final de la Copa de Oro de Alto Handicap. Dicho trofeo será auspiciado por Jaeger LeCoultre al tiempo que Hackett patrocinará la Copa de Bronce. EFG Bank será el banco oficial del Torneo Internacional de Verano, BMW el coche oficial y Nesspreso el producto oficial del certamen.

Dentro del pabellón principal existirá una zona vip muy exclusiva donde se podrá pagar por un palco o una mesa por día, o por semana, de forma que los espectadores tengan un sitio privilegiado para disfrutar del mejor juego.

En el Alto Handicap se destaca la presencia de Las Monjitas, que de la mano de su patrón Camilo Bautista y con el destacado polista argentino Eduardo Novillo Astrada, vuelve un año más a Sotogrande y se presenta como uno de los grandes candidatos a llevarse el Oro. Pero también estarán Ayala, el vice campeón de la pasada edición y Tattinger Dos Lunas que contará con el laureado y diez goles de handicap, Gonzalo Pieres, que vuelve a Sotogrande con los títulos del Abierto Argentino y el US Open en su haber. Una de las novedades será la participación del equipo de Leones, que de la mano del experimentado polista español Nacho Domecq, vuelve al primer nivel. Lexus terminó de forma invicta el Barcelona Polo Classic y además logró llevarse el premio al mejor jugador del torneo, que cayó en manos de Bautista Ortíz de Urbina al tiempo que la yegua Pimienta, propiedad de Phillip Maeder y montada por Federico Bachman, fue distinguida como mejor ejemplar de la final. Illy, el vice campeón, también tuvo su meritorio reconocimiento y además uno de sus integrantes, Adrían Matheu, se llevó el premio Fair Play. Cinco equipos de hasta 12 goles de handicap formaron parte de este tradicional certamen que inaugura la temporada oficial del polo en la ciudad condal y que se realizó con gran éxito. Mención

aparte merece la magnífica organización que llevó adelante el Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, encabezado por su profesional de polo, Federico Español, y que permitió que se viviesen dos semanas de muy buen polo y con una gran cantidad de gente disfrutando del mismo. La final

Lexus derrotó a Illy en la gran final por 11 a 5,5 y obtuvo la copa del tradicional torneo que se disputa todos los años por esta época en Barcelona. Illy pudo contrarrestar el poderío del campeón en los dos primeros chukkers, donde la paridad fue el común denominador, pero a partir del tercer período Lexus puso de manifiesto todo su potencial y con un gran juego colectivo logró pasar en el marcador y luego ir sumando goles para llevarse sin contratiempos la definición. El nivel que exhibieron Bautista Ortíz de Urbina y Federico Bachman fue otro de los puntos altos de Lexus.●

Lexus finished unbeaten in the Barcelona Polo Classic and also managed to win the prize for the best player of the tournament, which went to Bautista Ortíz de Urbina, while the mare Pimienta, owned by Phillip Maeder and ridden by Federico Bachman, was acknowledged as the best horse in the final. honour Illy, the runners-up, also received well-deserved recognition, and one of their team, Adrián Matheu, won the prize for fair play. ue un cierre de excepción para un gran torneo que en su centenario contó con la participación de 5 equipos que durante dos semanas se enfrentaron en el Real Club Puerta de Hierro de Madrid. Valdeparras, en su camino al título, derrotó a Seguriber John Smith por 10 a 9, a Konecta XL en cifras de 14 a 5,5 y en la tercera fecha se enfrentó a Puerta de Hierro al cual venció por 8 a 6. El único partido que perdió el cuarteto de Entrecanales, Ciesa, Soria y Espinosa de los Monteros fue ante Leones Fun & Basics 8-6 en la última fecha clasificatoria. La final no se le presentó nada fácil a Valdeparras ya que estuvo debajo en el marcador hasta el tercer chukker. En el arranque del encuentro Puerta de Hierro, con Luis Iglesias, Francisco Primo de Rivera, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña y Juan Ambroggio, comenzó en gran forma y se impuso con claridad durante los dos primeros chukkers (3-1/5-2). Valdeparras reaccionó gracias al buen trabajo de Cieza y sobre todo de Pedro Soria, (la gran figura del decisivo encuentro), y acortó diferencias en el juego y el marcador. El tercer chukker terminó 6-5 a favor de Puerta de Hierro y en el cuarto Valdeparras logró empatar por primera vez el encuentro y seguir de largo en el marcador para llevarse el período 8-7. El momento de máxima emoción se vivió en el quinto y definitivo chukker. Valdeparras aumentó su ventaja tras un golazo de Soria pero inmediatamente redujo diferencias Puerta de Hierro con un penal de Pascual Sainz de Vicuña. Con el resultado 9-8 a favor de Valdeparras, Soria malogra un penal desde las 40 yardas y se pierde la oportunidad de sentenciar el partido. Puerta de Hierro se jugó todo por el todo y logró empatar por intermedio de Primo de Rivera a falta de un par de minutos para la campana. Parecía que el chukker suplementario definiría al campeón pero en uno de los últimos ataques, Valdeparras forzó un penal a su favor que Soria no falló y de esa manera decretó el triunfo y el título de la Copa Aznar.●

The only match that the quartet of Entrecanales, Ciesa, Soria and Espinosa de los Monteros lost was against Leones Fun&Basics, by 8 goals to 6 in the last qualifying round. The final was anything but easy for Valdeparras, who were behind on the scoreboard until the third chukka.

The Puerta de Hierro team, with Luis Iglesias, Francisco Primo de Rivera, Pascual Sainz de Vicuña and Juan Ambroggio, started the match in great shape and were dominant in the first two chukkas (3-1 and 5-2). But Valdeparras reacted with some good work from Cieza and in particular Pedro Soria, the big star of the final, and they closed the gap in their play and on the scoreboard. The third chukka ended 6-5 in favour of Puerta de Hierro and in the fourth Valdeparras managed to draw level for the first time in the match and continued in the same vein to finish the period on 8-7. The match came to a crescendo in the fifth

and final chukka. Valdeparras increased their lead following a spectacular goal from Soria, but Puerta de Hierro immediately replied with a Pascual Sainz de Vicuña penalty. With the result 9-8 in favour of Valdeparras, Soria wasted a penalty from 40 yards and missed the opportunity to seal the match. Puerta de Hierro went for broke and managed to draw level thanks to Primo de Rivera’s intervention just a couple of minutes from the final bell. It looked like an extra chukka would decide who would be champions, but in one of the last attacks of the match Valdeparras forced a penalty in their favour, which Soria was sure to score in order to clinch victory and the Copa Aznar title on its centenary. ●

La Copa Primavera en Villafranca del Castillo y con cuatro equipos de 4 a 6 goles disputándola, abrió la temporada. Scalpers Polo Team se consagró campeón de este torneo cuyo podio completaron Corpest, R.C. Puerta de Hierro y VillaFranca. El Memorial Conde de Sepúlveda, de 6 a 8 goles de handicap y con el Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro como sede consagró como campeón a Bisontes de Santander que derrotó a Corpest en la final por 9 a 8. Abierto Puerta de Hierro Seguriber John Smith derrotó en la final a RC Puerta de Hierro por 9 a 6 y se quedó con el Abierto Real Club Puerta de Hierro el primero de los tres torneos que se juegan para equipos de 10 a 12 goles de handicap. El cuarteto ganador estuvo formado por Gabriel Aguirre, Ricardo Trujillo, Juan Lozada y Alejandro Aznar. La Copa Presidente de la Federación Madrileña de Polo correspondió a Leones Fun&Basics al derrotar a Konecta XL por 10 a 9 con gol de oro en chukker suplementario. ●

The Madrid Polo Federation opened its ﬁxture list with the Copa Primavera and the Memorial Conde de Sepúlveda before moving on to the three most important championships of the season: the Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro Open, the Copa Aznar and the Memorial de S.M. el Rey Don Alfonso XIII The Copa Primavera was held at Villafranca del Castillo and involved four teams with handicaps of 4 to 6 goals. Scalpers Polo Team were crowned champions of the tournament which also saw Corpest, R.C. Puerta de Hierro and VillaFranca on the podium. The Memorial Conde de Sepúlveda, a 6to 8-goal tournament hosted by Real Club de Puerta de Hierro, was won by Bisontes de Santander who defeated Corpest in the final by 9 goals to 8. In the Puerta de Hierro Open, Seguriber

John Smith defeated RC Puerta de Hierro in the final by 9 goals to 6 and clinched the Trophy, the first of the three tournaments organised for 10- to 12-goal teams. 1909, Luis María Aznar instauró la Copa Aznar que en este 2009 cumplió su centenario de disputa. Aznar no hacía mucho que había llegado de Bilbao a vivir a Madrid y era un gran aficionado al polo pero no jugador. Ese entusiasmo lo motivó a crear este trofeo que junto al Abierto Puerta de Hierro son los más emblemáticos de Madrid y de España. Su hijo José Luis, fue el primero de la familia Aznar en jugar la Copa puesta en juego en su honor. Don José Luis fue el primero de la familia Aznar en levantar el trofeo, en 1930, copa que tuvo entre los polistas más laureados

In 1909, Luis María Aznar established the Copa Aznar, which this year celebrates its centenary. Aznar had just come from Bilbao to live in Madrid and was a great polo enthusiast, although not a player. This enthusiasm led him to create this competition, which alongside the Puerta de Hierro Open is the most emblematic of Madrid and Spain. His brother Pedro and son José Luis were the first in the Aznar family to play in the Copa contested in his honour. In 1930 Don José Luis was the first of the Aznar family to lift the trophy, a cup whose most prolific winners include HRH King Alfonso XIII. En la década del 50, más concretamente en 1950, 1953 y 1956, lo ganó Don Eduardo Aznar, la del 53 junto a su hermano Pedro. En 1962, Don Eduardo volvió a proclamarse campeón y en 1978 fue el turno de Alejandro quien actualmente integra la directiva de polo del Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro. Su hijo promete seguir los pasos de la familia y seguramente en un par de años estará también levantando la Copa Aznar. La Copa, que en sus primeras épocas se jugó en el Hipódromo, que tuvo un breve paso por Lamiaco, Bilbao y que terminó en la magnífica cancha del Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro, cumple sus jóvenes 100 años y tiene tantos más de historia por escribir.

In the 1950s, or more specifically in 1950, 1953 and 1956, it was won by Don Eduardo Aznar, alongside his brother Pedro in the case of 1953. In 1962, Don Eduardo was once again proclaimed champion, and in 1978 it was the turn of Alejandro, who is currently a member of the board of Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro. His son looks like he will continue in the family tradition and no doubt within a couple of years he will be lifting the Copa Aznar, established by his great-great-grandfather, Luis María Aznar, in 1909. The Copa, which in its early years was played on the Hipodromo, which spent a short time at Lamiaco, Bilbao and ended up at the magnificent Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro ground, is now celebrating a young 100 years and has as many more of history to write. El Consejo Superior de Deportes otorgó la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo al Club de Polo de Xerez y a Nacho Domecq El Club de Polo de Xerez y el polista español, Ignacio Domecq fueron galardonados por el Consejo Superior de Deportes con la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo La entrega de estos distinguidos galardones fue presidida por Sus Majestades los Reyes de España. Domecq, de extensa trayectoria en el polo y capitán de la selección española en el último Mundial disputado en México, fue premiado con la medalla de bronce de la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo, galardón que le fue entregado por S.M. la Reina. El polista jerezano, aún en plena actividad, es uno de los jugadores más destacados del polo español con muchos títulos locales e internacionales en su haber. Por su parte, el presidente del Club de Polo de Xerez, Lorenzo Diez RomeroValdespino, recibió de manos de S.M. la Reina, la Placa de Bronce de la Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo. The High Council for Sport have awarded the Royal Order of Sporting Merit to Club de Polo de Xerez and Nacho Domecq Club de Polo de Xerez and the Spanish polo player, Ignacio Domecq, received the Royal Order of Sporting Merit from the High Council for Sports The prize-giving ceremony was presided over by Their Royal Highnesses the King and Queen of Spain. Domecq, who has had a long career in polo and captained the Spanish national side in the last World Championships held in Mexico, was awarded the Royal Order of Sporting Merit bronze medal, which was handed to him by Her Majesty the Queen. The polo player from Jerez, still fully active, is one of the most outstanding players in Spanish polo with many domestic and international titles under his belt. The chairman of Club de Polo de Xerez, Lorenzo Diez RomeroValdespino, received the Royal Order of Sporting Merit bronze plaque, also from Her Majesty the Queen. The award was granted for the Jerez club’s brilliant record throughout its fruitful sporting history.
