DeLoach named festival general chairman

BY DANNY WADE Planning for the 78th festival has began last year the week after the 2014 festival was over. Festival president, Terri Crider, proudly announced in August that Rob DeLoach will serve as her general chairman.

DeLoach is Humboldt through and through, growing up in the strawberry city, attending school here and now operating a business on Main Street. “He was my pick from day one when Mike Hawks (president of the 77th festival) asked me (to be festival general chairman) last year,� Crider said. “Rob came to mind immediately.�

The past couple of years, the general chairman was announced during the Territorial Revue, Saturday night ment was made of festival week. Instead of unofficially choosing her general ed to wait chairman prior to the festival, Crider wanted and see how everything worked during festival week, even though DeLoach was always herr first candidate for the job.

After the festival this year, Crider took some me time away from the festival to refuel.

Then, right before she was going to o approach DeLoach, he had two major issues arise that potentially could have forced him to decline Crider’s offer. DeLoach and his wife, Ashlee, were about to have a child. He was also the current Humboldt Chamber of Commerce vice president, which budgets the festival. “I thought I had lost my selection,� Crider recalled. “It was funny, he came up to me during a chamber meeting a few weeks after the festival and asked if I had asked anyone to be general chairman. I said I was going to ask you but now you’re going to be a dad and you are chamber vice president.�

DeLoach still said “yes� to being asked. He did say he needed to run it by Ashlee, and also speak peak with chamber president, Tyler Gamble, about stepping down as chamber vice president. They both agreed and the rest was history—DeLoach ach is

the festival general chairman for this year’s festival. “It was a yes,� DeLoach said. “It is something I always wanted to do. My dad (Bill DeLoach) did it when I was 13 in 1994. I saw the festival through his eyes and knew I wanted to do that as well.�

DeLoach knows putting on a Strawberry Festival is a lot of work, but he says he’s up for the challenge. “If there was ever a scenario of hard work, it’s the Strawberry Festival,�

DeLoach said. “I remember when dad was president, how much effort goes into it and all the volunteers that work behind the scenes to make it

Crider said she and DeLoach have a long friendship, going all the way back to school days in Humboldt. “He’s a leader, willing to take on things. You know if you ask Rob to do something, he will do it and it will be done well,� Crider said of the reason she selected DeLoach to be her general chairman. “He’s dedicated to Humboldt and to the festival. I always knew he would be a (Strawberry Festival) president, so I wanted him to work with me.�

This may be the youngest duo of festival president and general chairman, both being in their early to mid-30s. But their involvement has 60-plus years enjoying the Strawberry Festival. DeLoach said he has never missed one. Even when he was away at college, DeLoach came home to be a part of the Strawberry Festival.

Since the two had not had much time back in August of last year to discuss this year’s festival, one thing they did talk about is continuing the explosion of people gathering and enjoying the festival on Main St. at night. “We want downtown to be hopping,� Crider said. “The past few years people are gathering on Main St. Our focus is downtown. We would love to have live music every night.�

Last year the carnival was moved downtown, a move the practically everyone enjoyed. That change added to the downtown excitement. Now Crider and DeLoach want to build on the downtown enthusiasm of meeting family and friends, eating concessions, and having a good time. “Other than the parades, visiting on Main St. was my favorite part last year,� DeLoach added.

This year, festival officials plan to use social media more, posting announcements and pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

They will also update the Strawberry Festival website, www.wtsf.org to keep it more current. “I love Humboldt. I’m from here. The Strawberry Festival is in my heart and always has been,� DeLoach said. “I want people to come to Humboldt and experience the Strawberry Festival, who may not have experienced it before.�

Honoree Georgann McFarland

BY DANNY WADE The West Tennessee Strawberry Festival is steeped in tradition.

One way festival officials revere that tradition is by naming an honoree each year—someone who truly has the Strawberry Festival at heart.

This year, Strawberry Festival President Terri Crider and General Chairman Rob DeLoach proudly announce Georgann McFarland as honoree of the 78th annual West Tennessee Strawberry Festival. “I’m very honored (to be selected as honoree) but it takes so many people working together to make the festival what it is,� McFarland said. “Being president was a lot of work, but it’s fun. As a committee chair, you get a lot of credit but it takes hundreds to make this festival work.� “It was an easy choice,� Crider said of selecting McFarland as honoree. “I’ve always felt like a part of their family since I was little. I got to see her commitment to the Strawberry Festival, her involvement and how much she loves it. She really does love the Strawberry Festival.�

In 2005, festival president Michael Longmire asked McFarland to be his general chairman for the 2006 festival, which she accepted. In turn, McFarland asked Jennifer Wilson to be her general chairman for the 2007 festival. “When I asked her (to be honoree), she was reluctant at first,� President Crider said. “I told Steve (Georgann’s husband) and he said, ‘you made an excellent choice.’ It was the sweetest thing in the world.�

McFarland’s family and Crider’s family have known each other for years and have grown to become wonderful friends. Over the years they have created their own little traditions they do each year during festival week.

McFarland, who was born and raised in Humboldt, has indeed been involved all of her life. Her first position with the festival was in 1983 when Mike Hawks called her to serve on his committee to type up press releases for the media. She worked with the Street Dance in the 80s and with the Jr. Host and Hostess revues.

Currently she is chair of the Jr. Territorial committee along with co-chairs Sherry Jo Smith (Crider’s mom) and Janice Shelton. As a youngster, McFarland rode on floats. Her now grown children, Taylor Nicodemus and Anna Surratt were in the Jr. Host and Hostess pageants. Taylor was Jr. Host one year and Anna was in the Hostess Princess royalty four years.

Anna is following in her mother’s footsteps being involved with the festival, serving as Strawberry Festival coordinator with the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce.

There are two things McFarland likes that have happened over the past few years. One is the youth movement.

More young people are getting involved, she said. The other thing McFarland likes is how people are embracing the “West Tennessee�

Strawberry Festival.

Humboldt hosts it but it is West Tennessee’s, she noted. “It’s positive,�

Crider added. “Young people are taking leadership roles.�

Crider also praised McFarland’s parents, Curtis and Pat King, for leading a wonderful example. “Georgann made the decision to live that way too,� Crider said. “You can sit back and watch the festival, but she chose to work to make it what it is. If something needs doing, she will make sure it’s done right as it should be. It’s important to me that her parents get to see her honored.� “I think if you live here you should serve your community, plant roots,� McFarland said. “Don’t just live here, but be involved. I can’t imagine not being a part of the Strawberry Festival.�

When Surratt talks about the festival, one can’t help but see the exuberance and excitement in her face. One can hear the passion in her voice when talking about the Humboldt’s premier event.

It was her time as a member of the hostess princesss court for four consecutive years that Surratt saw thee festival in a totally different light.

“I got a first-hand experience of how the Strawberry Festival grew within a four-year span, through the city tour and attending all the events,” Surratt recalled.

“During those times I grew to love and appreciate the festival in a completely different way.”

Putting on an event the size of the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival takes a healthy budget. One of Surratt’s biggest duties is talking with sponsors and bringing new sponsors onboard. Sponsorship money funds the vast majority of the festival.

“I hope to keep all the current sponsors and get somee to move up a level,” Surratt noted. “I hope to get new ew sponsors as well.”

There are approximately 70 flag sponsors who have festival stival flags with their business names on them that are displayed ayed along Main Street and 22nd Avenue on utility poles. Surratt rratt

has been contacting other potential sponsors with high hopes of getting more flags flying.

After one month on the job, Surratt began working on the concessioner packets that will go out to food venders. Last year the festival increased the vender fees and still had a record number of venders w wanting to operate during festival week.

January and February, w work began on the magazine. The magazine is one of the biggest and most mo time consuming projects for the festival. The coordinator’s position too took a much more in-depth role creating the festival magazine. The festival pr president still has his or her own stamp of approval on it but Surratt did mu much of the preparatory work. This includes selling ads, getting lists togethe together, sorting through dozens and dozens of pictures, layout and design.

Now that the sponsorships are committed, the magazine completed sponso and vendors lined up, work on the actual festival has begun. There are approximately 60 com committees and individuals that oversee the events.

Surratt will work with each and every one of them, she said.

“The committee cchairs, I will work with them, but they run their events on their ow own and do a wonderful job,” Surratt explained.

“They make mak the events happen!”

After high school, she attended Middle Tennessee State University and earned her M BS B in Organizational Communications in 2013.

E Even as a college student, Surratt began promoting the th festival all the way from Murfreesboro.

“I would bring friends to Humboldt and the St Strawberry Festival,” Surratt recalled. “They were so amazed at something so big in this small town.”

Surratt S moved back here and worked in human res resources for a year. When the Strawberry Festival co coordinator’s position became available last year, she jumped at the opportunity to have a job working with wit the festival, which she truly loves.

“I love the festival,” Surratt said. “There is so much potential pot in Humboldt and the Strawberry Festival. I want wan to make a difference.”

2014 Recipe Contest Winners

BERRY’S CHOICE – The Strawberry Mascot picked Amanda Simmons’ recipe as the favorite in the kids category.

PRESIDENT’S CHOICE – 2014 Strawberry Festival President Mike Hawks selected Deborah Williams’ dish as his favorite.

PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY – Professional baker, Tim Hayes, had two entries in the Recipe Contest last year. He is joined by Recipe Contest chair, Debbie Brasfield.

Meet the 78th West TN Strawberry the parade route. She looks forward to the carnival downtown again this year.

When asked how it feels to be a part of the 2015 Hostess Princess Court she replied, “It’s always an honor to represent my hometown, especially during the most fun time of the year.”

Her favorite festival memories are going to town with her family, eating festival food almost every night and also watching the parade.

She looks forward to eating downtown with friends and family, watching the fireworks and being part of the parade.

Hannah said that it is fun to be a part of the 2015 Hostess Princess Court and that she feels blessed. She is very excited for all of the activities ahead and is looking forward to doing the pageant again this year.

1st Maid Hannah Milam

Hostess Princess Julianna Seals

Julianna Seals, Hostess Princess for the 78th Annual West Tennessee Strawberry Festival, is the daughter of Bob and Jennifer Seals.

She is a 17-year-old junior at the University School of Jackson. Her school activities include being a cheerleader and yearbook editor. She is a member of the 1st Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Julianna will graduate high school in 2016 and is still considering and weighing her college options.

Her favorite festival memories include riding a float every year and seeing all of her friends and family along

Hannah Milan, daughter of Jeff and Jennifer Milam, is 1st maid in the 2015 Hostess Princess Court.

She is 16-year-old junior at South Gibson County High School. Her school activities include Beta Club, Bible Club, Spanish Club and Student Section.

Extra-curricular activities include attending church at First Baptist Church of Humboldt where she is an active member of the youth group. She also enjoys playing the fiddle/violin and spending time with friends and family.

When asked about her plans for the future, she said, “After graduating in 2016 I plan to go to college and obtain a degree in accounting to work as a bank auditor.”

2nd Maid Allie Privitt

Allie Renee’ Privitt, 2nd maid in the 2015 Hostess Princess Court, is the daughter of Mitzie and Jerry Privitt.

She is a 16-year-old sophomore at South Gibson County High School. Her school activities include cheerleading, honor student, Beta Club, Science Award, Scholastic Recognition Award and Relay for Life high school team member.

Cancer Kickers, dancing competitively and for fun, and hanging out and texting friends. She is also the reigning Miss Tennessee Outstanding Teen.

When asked about her favorite festival memory shee replied, “When I was riding on my school royalty float, the antenna of the 3D hornet caught the red light and broke off. I climbed up in a dress and placed it back on.

The look on everyone’s face was priceless. It’s great being the float builder’s kid.”

Allie looks forward to the parades. After helping and watching numerous floats being constructed at her house, she loves to see all the kids having a great time on them.

She went on to say, “I have had a great time with both the hostess princess and territorial girls. I love getting to share this experience with my mini-me, Jolee, Jr. Hostess.

3rd Maid Maya Day

Maya Day, daughter of Reginald Day and Chandra Bailey is the 3rd maid for the 2015 Hostess Princess court.

She is a 16-year-old junior at Trinity Christian

Academy. award demy. She received the leadership awa d for cheerleading, for the special needs rleading, volunteers yearly fo pageant member of the Spanish Club. Her extrant and is a membe curricular ular aactivities include cheerleading, basketball and softball.

She participates in weekly ballet and tap classes. For fun, she enjoys going to the movies and just being with her family. Climbing rock walls is also a hobby for her.

Maya plans to attend UNC and become an orthodontist.

She said she loves the idea of helping people to have a smile they can feel confident about.

Her favorite festival memory is eating tons of cotton candy and snow cones to stay cool.

“I can’t wait to see the floats, listen to the bands play and eat all of the delicious foods. I also look forward to seeing how creative people will be in the themes of their floats and how they are decorated,” said Maya.

She wonders if there will be a Frozen float.

She went on to say that it has been wonderful being able to participate rtic p in all the activities, getting to know everyone and making new friends.

“It hass been an honor to represent the city of Humboldt,” oldt,” she said.

4th Maid Karen Allen

Karen Allen, 4th maid in the 2015 Hostess Princess Court, is the daughter of Michael and Christy Allen.

She is a 16-year-old junior at Peabody High School.

Her school activities include FFA Chapter Vice President, Junior Class Treasurer, Student Council Communications Officer, Pep Club, Beta Club, softball, TASC Above and Beyond Award 2015.

She attends Poplar Grove Baptist Church and she enjoys reading and watching baseball and softball.

Karen plans to attend Mississippi State University to K major ma in pre-med in the fall of 2016.

Her favorite festival memory is her 12th birthday when she s met her best friend, Maddie Abbott. They sat in front of BancorpSouth talking and watching the parade.

When asked what she looks forward to during festival week she replied, “I’m definitely looking forward to riding on the float on Friday morning, but I enjoy every event the Hostess Princess court attends!”

She went on to say that it is a blessing to be a part of the 2015 Hostess Princess Court and an honor to represent the Strawberry Festival and the amazing town of Humboldt.

‘He’s Slim Shady’ crowned champion of 77th WTSF Horse Show

The 77th West Tennessee Strawberry Festival horse show was held Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Chalmus Davenport Arena in Humboldt .

The crowd was on their feet when the aged stallions answered the call for the final class of the night. Jimmy McConnell aboard He’s Slim Shady took home the title of 2014 West Tennessee Strawberry Festival Walking Horse Champion and the beautiful strawberry embellished floral horse shoe for owners Bill and Karen Bean of Tomball, Texas.

Exhibitors from several states including Missouri, California, Kentucky, Mississippi and Arkansas traveled to Humboldt to show their horses. One such exhibitor was Richard Henson of Symsonia, Ky. Henson exhibited Generator’s Magisty in the Model Class after a 40 year absence from the show ring.

Generator’s Magisty is a 16-year-old rescued Tennessee walking horse to which Henson and his wife, Barbara, gave a forever home in 2013. The Henson’s have loved and nurtured this horse, thus giving him the opportunity to grace the show ring once again. Many more beautiful horses entered the gate to the delight of the many spectators at ringside.

Humboldt’s Guinda Flippin was the Womens’ 5K winner during the Strawberry Festival 5K & 10K run with a time of 23:02. Jourdan Redden of Jackson, Tenn. crossed the finish line first winning the Mens’5K Run in 18 minutes, 19 seconds.

Baskerville, Mays, Rozell to be inducted into Humboldt Hall of Fame

William Baskerville is being honored posthumously this year as the late Humboldt businessman and civic leader is inducted into the Humboldt Hall of Fame.

Baskerville was born in 1919 near Mason, Tenn. He married Olga Vern Donald of Humboldt in 1947 and is the father of three sons and a daughter.

He was a graduate of Hoffman-St. Mary School, a private Episcopal school in Mason and attended Tennessee State University before earning a Mortuary Science Degree from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in Nashville in 1946. He served four and a half years in World War II. While living in Mason, he worked at Robinson Funeral Home. After moving to Humboldt, Baskerville worked for several years with Rawls and Claybrook Funeral Home and became manager after the death of J.W. Claybrook. Soon the home became known as Rawls and Baskerville.

Baskerville was involved in community affairs. He served on the Humboldt Utility Board, NAACP, Funeral Directors Associations, National Funeral Director and Morticians Associations, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and others.

After moving to Humboldt, he was a member of Lane Chapel Church. Later he was a united with St. James Baptist with his family and was ordained as deacon in 1980.

Through the years his family joined him in the funeral home business and today the legacy of Baskerville Funeral Home continues.

Born in Humboldt on December 6, 1939, Carl Mays graduated from Humboldt High School in 1958, where he excelled in sports and leadership in several areas. Mays has often referred to Humboldt in his speaking and writing, and features some Humboldt-based stories in his A Strategy For Winning and You Can Do It books.

Mays earned a bachelor’s degree from Murray State University, Master’s from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and did additional study at the University of Memphis. Early in his career he taught and coached at Humes High School in Memphis and John Curtis Christian High School in River Ridge, La. He was also involved in broadcasting and was a commentator on the University of Alabama Freshman Football Network. In the 1980s-90s, the University of Tennessee’s athletic and continuing education departments produced a video series based on Mays’ A Strategy For Winning program. He is known for his work with UT’s Pat Summitt and Lady Vols.

Mays has spoken at over 4,000 events, including corporations, associations, sports teams, government entities, religious organizations and education groups.

Recipient of the National Speakers Association’s Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation, and Council of Peers Award for Excellence (CPAE), Mays, a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, has written over a dozen books.

A Gatlinburg resident of 42 years, Mays and wife, Jean, moved to Flower Mound, Tex., to be near their son.

David Rozzell was born and raised in Humboldt, Tennessee, the son of Humboldt residents Dr. James David Rozzell and Lois Nicholson Rozzell (now Lois Currie). His grandparents, R.L. and Virginia Nicholson were also long-time residents, moving to Humboldt in the early 1940s.

He attended Main Street and East End, and Humboldt Jr. High schools. Rozzell graduated valedictorian from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tenn. He did undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, earning a BS degree in Chemistry. He continued his education in chemistry at Harvard University through a National Science Foundation scholarship and teaching fellowship, receiving his PhD in Chemistry in 1983.

Rozzell started his career in the early days of the biotechnology industry, developing one of the first biotech processes for the production of an important amino acid. He is a founder or co-founder of four companies in the biotechnology and chemistry industries. More recently his work is focused on two companies. Sustainable Chemistry Solutions, Inc., provides consulting and expert services in the enzyme and biotechnology industries. Catylix, Inc., which he co-founded, is a developer of new fluorine chemistry. He is the inventor on more than 25 patents and patent applications. Dr. Rozzell has lectured around the world. He has also authored five books.

He now resides in Burbank, Calif. with his wife Teri, three children and two step-daughters. He is active in the Christian Assembly Church in Eagle Rock, California.

Gooch, Jackson and Watridge inducted into Humboldt Hall of Fame

Dr. Clarence Watridge, (center) a neurosurgeon and professor at UT, highly esteemed by his peers with countless accolades and accomplishments, was among last year’s Humboldt Hall of Fame inductees. Watridge simply thanked his family at the ceremony, noting they had facilitated his life. He said his sister, Syrena, taught him how to work hard. He also noted his big brother, Humboldt attorney Sam Watridge, who he said signed up for another term of duty in Vietnam “so I wouldn’t have to go.” Dr. Watridge is joined by his family, (from left) Tom and Syrena (Watridge) West, daughter Caia McInerney, (Watridge), wife Christy holding grandson Jack, and Jean and Sam Watridge.

A piano teacher who is among the nation’s best with numerous students achieving fame through the years, Alice Adams Jackson (center) was among the Humboldt Hall of Fame honorees at last year’s Humboldt Hall of Fame reception.

She has been playing the piano since she was six years old and while in high school, won the state Beta Club talent contest. She has been named the music teacher of the year in the state and her studio has produced a legacy of talent.

Upon her honor, she said it should be noted that arts are a very important part of the nation’s culture. “Thank you all.

This is a great honor. I feel rewarded tonight for 60 years of teaching.” She is joined by her friend, Jo Ann Small, and Hall of Fame presentor, Gil Fletcher.

Dr. Clarence Gooch graduated Stigall High School and continued his studies, becoming an obstetrician/gynecologist who helped thousands of West Tennessee patients over his 32 year career.

He has helped more than 30,000 patients and played a role in reducing infant mortality rates in West Tennessee. Speaking on behalf of Dr. Gooch, his wife, Deborah, thanked the Humboldt Hall of Fame for his induction last year. Dr. Gooch was raised by aunts and one of them was an assistant at Dr. Crenshaw’s Humboldt office. Dr. Gooch (seated) is joined by daughter Amber, sister Dorothy Gooch, wife Deborah and cousin Sam Crump.
