With the abundance of rainfall over the last few weeks we may be out of this persistent drought, but I for one am hesitant to say it has broken and is over I know how brutal the summer months can be. Continue to be conservative with your watering of gardens and lawns; only water in the mornings and evening when the wind is calmer and the sun does not cause the water to evaporate immediately. Lawns do not need to be watered every day, every third or fourth day is sufficient to keep the lawn green, growing and healthy. Watering the lawn on a daily basis sets you up for disease issues and shallow rooting which makes your lawn more apt to be harmed by the heat.Flows at all crossings on the Frio River were taken on June 7th. Fulgham’s Crossing just south of the Alto Frio Baptist Encampment had a flow of 25,215 gpm last measurement and now has a flow of 92,675 gpm; this is about a 4X increase. All of the culverts at this crossing were flowing at near full capacity without any water going over the top of the roadway. It sure would be great for this to last all summer. The Leakey Springs crossing had a flow of 4,751 gpm last measurement, and a flow of 7,159 gpm this reading; nearly doubling since the last measurement. This crossing had one culvert that was partially blocked but the couple of rises have cleared the debris. The Mill Creek Crossing showed a 2.5X increase in flow since the last measurement; there are culverts on the south end of this crossing that continue to have no flow; but it appears that they had a little flow last week but that it was short lived. This crossing has a flow of 35,228 gpm this measurement which is up from the last measurement of 16,234 gpm. This is one crossing that had some large trees come down river and I was not able to move the logs due to their size and the amount of water pushing them against the crossing. I also took the flow measurement at Frio River Place this time and it is very similar to the reading taken up river at Fulgham’s Crossing. The flow was 34,613 gpm last measurement and the flow this week was up about 3.5X at 118,083 gpm. I expect all of these crossings to be flowing considerably lower and slower when I go back to take measurements in a couple of weeks. On the west prong of the Frio River, the Rancho Real crossing had a flow of 26,813 gpm this reading compared to a flow of 9,362 gpm last measurement for an increase of about 3X. The Kent Creek crossing showed an increase in flow since the last measurement with a flow of 3,907 gpm this month up from a flow of 2,856 gpm last measurement. These two crossings react quickly to the water coming down stream and then clear relatively quickly as well. I know the water was over Highway 336 at the Kent Creek Crossing a couple of times over the last week for short durations but the water receded quickly enough that everyone that lives up RR 336 made it home. Now some residents that live back in the Rancho Real subdivision may not have been able to get home as easily. There are a few crossings entering the subdivision that probably had water over them for a longer duration. Remember don’t try crossing any of these locations if the water is higher than normal. Your life is too precious

to not wait a little longer to get to the house. The Nueces River flows were taken on June 8th and also showed higher than normal flows as a result of the rain activity over the last week and a half. McDonalds Crossing was flowing at 138,809 gpm last measurement and decreased to a flow of 90,699 gpm this measurement or a decrease of about 35%. This was the only crossing that showed a decrease in flow but it is still well above the normal flow for this area. The Nueces River Dam on Highway 55 south of Camp Wood had a flow of 106,717 gpm last reading and this measurement the culverts had a flow of 128,756 gpm or about a 17% increase. There was a tiny trickle of water going over the top of the crossing on Tuesday morning but I drove back out on Wednesday and the water level had dropped about 4 inches in 24 hours. This crossing looks amazing right now with a ton of water flowing over the dam. A word of warning - keep small pets and children away from the culverts at this crossing as there is still a lot of water going through them and they could easily suck kids and pets in. For those of you that live in the northern portion of Edwards County near Telegraph here are the latest flow measurements for the crossings in your area. It appears that a lot of water went through this area with loads of debris along the fences and some wind damaged trees in the area. Both of the crossings had debris on the upriver side of the crossings and it took a while to remove the tree limbs and sediment deposits; but by the time I left nearly all culverts were flowing “normally”. The first crossing on Highway 377 near Telegraph had a flow of 37,464 gpm two weeks ago and has nearly doubled to a flow of 65,026 gpm. The second crossing on Highway 377 near the Evergreen School had a flow of 42,005 gpm two weeks ago when I last checked the flow and now has a flow of 64,686 gpm or an increase of about 35%. There is a ton a water flowing down the South Llano now, but like the Frio and Nueces if we do not get regular rainfall events I think the flows will start dropping over the next few weeks.
