Southwest Area Regional Transit District Receives Financial Designation The Southwest Area Regional Transit District (SWART) received notice on March 10th of their Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle Gold designation by demonstrating its continued commitment to financial transparency for the second consecutive year. To date SWART has received both Silver and Gold designation by the Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle since their inception in June 2012. This will mark their third financial designation. The purpose of the program is to recognize local governments across Texas that is striving to meet a high standard for financial transparency online. In keeping with the State of Texas Comptroller’s Program, Southwest Area Regional Transit District set a goal to provide timely and accurate financial information to everyone interested in viewing how their tax dollars are spent. Financial transparency is an ongoing goal for any government entity. The Comptroller of Public Accounts encourages and applauds local governments across Texas that is stepping up efforts to give taxpayers

a transparent look at where their money goes. In order to receive the Gold designation, an entity must meet 16 transparency criteria points. The maximum amount of points that can be earned is 20. Designations last up to one year in which an entity must re-apply annually. “We at SWART are extremely proud of this consecutive designation. Transparency is a daily goal at SWART in order to better serve the public. As we continue to strive for excellence, we have set a precedence to follow our vision to be the model provider of transportation services in the Southwest region with integrity and dependability”, states SWART General Manager, Sarah Hidalgo-Cook. Hidalgo-Cook also noted that financial records can be viewed by the public on the SWART website at www.paseoswart.org. “The most recent board approved financials are posted on our website for public viewing”, added Hidalgo-Cook.

Gov. Perry Honors Texas Veterans at Vietnam Veterans Monument Dedication

Gov. Rick Perry recently paid tribute to Texas veterans who served or gave their lives in the Vietnam War at the unveiling and dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Monument on the Texas State Capitol Grounds. The ceremony was held on Texas Vietnam Veterans Day, which marks the anniversary of the day the last American combat troops left Vietnam. “The monument we dedicate today will stand as an ongoing demonstration of the depth of our appreciation for the sacrifices of our Vietnam veterans, and a reminder of what is noble and good about the human spirit,” Gov. Perry said. “It will stand as a declaration that in Texas, we understand how blessed we are to have warriors ready to step forward and draw a line between us and those who would do us harm.” The governor also highlighted the contributions of the Vietnamese nationals who fought alongside Americans

in the war, many of whom went on to pursue U.S. citizenship and settle in Texas. The monument, which sits on the northeast side of the Capitol grounds, was approved by the 79th Texas Legislature. State Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa and State Rep. Wayne Smith, both Vietnam veterans, authored the legislation. Entombed inside the monument are 3,417 dog tags personalized for the Texans who gave their lives or went unaccounted for in the war. “As a Vietnam veteran for the U.S. Marine Corps, I understand the difficult sacrifices that our military families endure on a daily basis,” Sen. Hinojosa said. “The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument honors and thanks our fallen Vietnam heroes and their families for their ultimate sacrifice of defending our freedom, and welcomes those who came home and fought with great courage and resilience. It is our hope that this monument will ensure that the memory of our Texas Vietnam Heroes lives on. Semper Fi.” “Most of our men and women who fought in Vietnam never received a hero’s welcome or recognition for our service to our country and state,” Rep. Smith said. “With today’s dedication, we can finally say welcome home, and thanks for your sacrifice.” The Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument Committee oversaw the fundraising, design and production of the monument. It was funded fully through private donations, with more than 600 individual, organization and corporate donors.

Statement by Gov. Perry on Federal Court Ruling to Uphold Texas Law Protecting Life and Women’s Health Gov. Rick Perry released the following statement regarding the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals decision to uphold a law protecting life and women’s health passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013: “The people of Texas have spoken through their elected

leaders and in support of protecting the culture of life in our state. Today’s court decision is good news for Texas women and the unborn, and we will continue to fight for the protection of life and women’s health in Texas.”

Perry on February 2014 Texas Job Growth Texas Unemployment Rate Remains 5.7%; National Unemployment Rate Sits at 6.7% Gov. Rick Perry released the following statement regarding data from the Texas Workforce Commission showing Texas added 37,600 jobs in February 2014: “Job growth of this magnitude is about much more than just attractive statistics on a printed page; it means more choices and better options for Texas jobseekers, stronger

families and communities, and brighter futures for our children. The commitment we made more than a decade ago to practicing fiscal responsibility and enacting job-friendly policies continues to pay huge dividends, helping keep Texas the best place in the nation to live, work, build a business or raise a family.”

Perry on National Guard Reductions There are many ways to balance the federal budget, but this decision to eliminate the 72nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s headquarters risks Texas’ ability to properly respond to hurricanes, floods, wildfires and other natural disasters, and is short-sighted. Over the

past decade, the Texas Guard has responded to more than 150 disasters in Texas and surrounding states, saving countless lives and helping families in distress. The Texas Guard also plays a vital role in our nation’s War on Terror.

Statement by Gov. Perry on HHS Secretary Sebelius Visit to Texas Gov. Rick Perry released the following statement on attacks by the Obama administration over the failures of Obamacare: “Yet again, the Obama Administration would rather point fingers at other people than accept any of the responsibility for Obamacare’s failure. The truth is, the more people learn about Obamacare, the less they like it, and the

most egregious examples of misinformation have come directly from the president himself, with false promises that people could keep their existing plans and they could continue going to their own doctor. Texas is not the reason Obamacare is failing; it’s failing because it’s simply bad policy.”
