Faculty Focus: Kathy Mendenhall POSITION: Professor of Communication teaching Public Speaking & Interpersonal Communication EDUCATION: Masters in Communication from Wichita State University YEARS AT HUTCHINSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE: 20 years WHAT MAKES HUTCHCC SPECIAL TO YOU? Teaching public speaking for 20 years at HutchCC has been a fascinating experience. I appreciate the academic freedom here that allows us to be creative in the classroom and to try new methods to help my students get past their anxieties about speaking, learn to research their topics and deliver professional quality speeches. I love the variety of ages, ethnicities and backgrounds of our students and the sharing of ideas that takes place in and out of class. My students bring a world of new knowledge and experiences to me, so I feel smarter after each round of new speeches. Because students help and support each other, they form strong friendships and grow their empathic skills, which is a beautiful and rewarding process to watch. Nothing is more exciting to me than watching scared, nervous students transform into confident and accomplished speakers. The professionalism, integrity and friendliness of my fellow instructors enriches my life. We are energized and encouraged by sharing our passions for teaching and discussing new ideas for impacting students’ lives. HutchCC is fortunate to have a bedrock of caring and dedicated instructors. HCC NOW! Spring 2017 3

Kevin Bowen 2017 Alumnus of the Year HCC NOW! Spring 2017 4

ALUMNI FEATURE Kevin Bowen has long been motivated to do all he could to support Hutchinson Community College, not for any recognition he may receive, but simply because of the positive impact it had on him and what it does for students and members of the community. It is because of this selfless attitude the Hutchinson Community College Alumni & Friends is proud to recognize Kevin as its 2017 Alumnus of the Year. A lifelong native of Hutchinson who has raised his family and started several small businesses in his home community, Kevin attended HutchCC for two years after graduating in 1980 from Buhler High School.

A lot has changed since Kevin first set foot on campus more than 35 years ago. He, his dad and uncle all played in the original Gowans Stadium. Kevin and his teammates even had to make the long trek to and from their locker rooms in the Sports Arena. Today, a renovated Gowans and the dedicated football complex are crown jewels among colleges in the Midwest. “For me, there has always been one landmark I wanted to support and see flourish, and that was Hutchinson Community College. To this day, the College continues to provide an environment that fosters creativity, friendship, learning and acceptance.”

Today, Kevin and Jodee are celebrating over 25 years “When my senior year football season was over, I knew of success with the Airport Steakhouse in addition to I wanted to continue to play,” stated Kevin. “I had their interests in the oil and gas industry. In addition to his father Ralph and uncle Roger, Kevin’s sisters Andrea (Bowen) Siefkes, Pam (Bowen) Kennedy and Tamara (Bowen) Harbour all attended Hutchinson Community College. Both of his children, Elli and Trace, were able to get a head-start on their college careers by taking dual-credit classes from Hutch before they graduated from Hutchinson High School.

Looking back, Kevin wouldn’t change a thing about the path that got him to where he is today. The time at Hutch provided the foundation to completing his college education at Kansas State University and the successess he and Jodee have enjoyed.

Helping our Heroes

HutchCC Fort Riley programs prepare students for career success In March 2014, Hutchinson Community College partnered with leadership of Fort Riley US Army Post to offer select Allied Health programs with on-site classes. These career training opportunities were geared for service members, dependents and members of the Fort Riley community. Currently, courses in Certified Nursing Aide, Certified Freshly from Michigan, I came as a newlywed with my daughter to be with my husband in Kansas. I was in school for nursing before I came, only completing prerequisites so that I could look for programs to apply to. I came across a sign one day driving onto base that mentioned a CNA program on post for dependents and civilians. I figured this would be a great start to transfer into a nursing program. Once I began the CNA course on post in October 2014, I overheard a conversation between my instructor and a fellow classmate about bringing a LPN program to Fort Riley in January 2015 to be tailored around military scheduling for night and weekend classes. This was awesome news.

Medication Aide, Phlebotomy, Pharmacy Technology and Practical Nursing are available on post. Alumni, Angela Crutchfield (‘16), shares her story of how the HutchCC Practical Nursing program at Fort Riley helped her to accomplish her dreams. pregnancy when he left. Needless to say, I was just a little busy right in the middle of nursing school. Fast forward to February 2016, my due date was fast approaching and we were in the home stretch of completing the program while beginning clinicals. One clinical was at Salina Regional Hospital, an hour away from where I planned to give birth. Being nine months pregnant and trying to catch up with RNs was no easy task. Every Saturday was a 12-hour clinical, and I showed up to complete what needed to be done.

Then came February 20. It was “Anyone who begins something about 4:30 they’ve always dreamed up, can am and I was complete it no matter the obstacle” talking After completing the CNA course, I began my journey with my -Angela Crutchfield to become a LPN. My main goal was to become a RN, husband, Fort Riley LPN Class of 2016 but again thought this would be a great stepping stone to who was gain experience in the nursing field. When I say it was the still in longest 18 months of my life, I mean it. There were sevKuwait, and told him my contractions were really bugeral obstacles that almost hindered me from completing ging me. Barely three hours later I was in full blown labor. the program, mainly the challenge of some courses, the While I certainly didn’t expect to give birth in my car on expense, the fact my husband was deployed October 2015 the way to the hospital, that’s precisely what happened. and, on top of it all, I was in the middle of my second I could do nothing but thank God that everything went

CAMPUS UPDATES well, the baby was healthy and I was doing fine. But in the back of my mind, I couldn’t help but think about how much I needed to catch up on for school. By July 2016, my husband had been back from deployment for about a month, and I finally graduated nursing school. He and the girls got to see me walk across the stage, I took my licensing exam (NCLEX) two days later and I miraculously passed. I had been told by many that “no one gets all 265 questions” right. Well, they must’ve not have been talking about me since I literally got Every Single Question. I was in a state of shock. Even more, I was thankful I would be able to keep the job that I had gotten just two weeks prior to taking the NCLEX. My husband was able to get out of the army earlier than expected, so the need to find a new home and new job was my main objective. We decided on Rochester, MN since I had lived in Minnesota before. Another reason Rochester was the main choice was because of the Mayo Clinic, one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world. It was my goal to work there and after applying and going through a rigorous interview process, I was offered a job on February 3 with the opportunity to start in March.

I feel blessed and honored to have graduated from Hutchinson Community College. I am a believer in fate, and it started with reading a sign while driving on post. I feel like anyone who begins something they’ve always dreamed up can complete it no matter the obstacle. This is to not say that my obstacles are far worse than anyone else’s; however, I am saying that I remained humble and prayed constantly for that light at the end of the tunnel that is shining brighter HutchCC Fort Riley student, Angela Crutchfield, is pinned at the Practical Nursing pinning ceremony in every day. July 2016 by Instructor Sandy Pangburn.

Remembering Bob Peel, Sr. The Hutchinson community and Hutchinson Community College lost a valued friend when Bob Peel, Sr. passed away December 6, 2016. When one looks at the impact Bob and his wife Lou had on the Hutchinson community and, specifically, Hutchinson Community College, it becomes clear they have so much to be proud of. The Bob and Lou Peel Center for Allied Health Training (formerly The Quest Center) was dedicated in 2013 in recognition of their significant contributions to the College and the renovation project of the Center. There is also the Bob and Lou Peel Football Weight Training Facility in the Jack Mull Family Football Complex on the Hutchinson Community College campus. In addition to facility improvements, the Peels were also supportive of a number of scholarship initiatives. Bob and Lou Peel spent a lifetime working hard and built a highly-successful beauty supply business in Hutchinson and the Midwest, gaining market share and becoming the top distributor of Redken. When the company sold to L’Oreal, Inc. in 2010, Peel’s Beauty Supply had a staff of more than 600 employees, 100 professional sales people and 57 stores. The Peels enjoyed a loyal staff, with many of them working more than 40 years for the company at the time of the sale. “It’s important to me that each of the individuals I worked with during my long career understands the value I believe they brought to our team,” Bob added. “Peel’s Friendly Beauty Supply was a success because we had the best employees. I’m proud of what we accomplished.”

ATHLETICS

The Quarterback Club Hall of Fame Committee enshrined its newest members on January 28 at halftime of the Hutchinson men’s basketball game. TRACI GISEL NEELY (Track and Field 1984-85)

RONDA SHIRLEY (Volleyball coach, 1998-2009) From 1998 to 2003, Ronda built a championshiplevel foundation at Hutchinson. The 2004 Blue Dragons went 43-1, ended a 21-year losing streak to Barton, won both the Jayhawk West and Region VI championships and finished fifth in the NJCAA Tournament.

In addition to being one of the first two female athletes to be enshrined into the Hall, Traci Gisel Neely becomes the first second-generation inductee, joining her father, Dick Gisel, who entered the Hall in 2015. She was Blue Dragon women track and field’s first ever individual national champion.

From that point on, wins and championships continued to come for Shirley’s Blue Dragons at a dizzying pace. From 2004 to 2009, Shirley coached her teams to five Region VI championships, four Jayhawk West titles and five National tournament placings.

In 1985, Gisel cleared 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches to win the NJCAA outdoor championship and set a Hutchinson team record that has only been tied by one other athlete since. Her best indoor jump of 5 feet, 8 inches is also a Hutchinson team record.

Shirley remains the program’s coaching leader in wins with a record of 347-157. She coached nine NJCAA AllAmericans, six AVCA All-Americans and 39 All-Jayhawk West players. Hutch played in the regional championship match in nine-straight seasons.

After Hutchinson, Gisel transferred to Abilene Christian University where she completed her career on the track. Gisel then completed her Masters in Sports Administration/ Sports Psychology at the University of Kansas.
