MEET OUR CHANCELLOR

A nationally recognized leader in the engineering and manufacturing industry, Dr. Cesar Maldonado transitioned to a leadership role in higher education in 2008. Today he serves as the 8th Chancellor of the 47year old Houston Community College District that stretches over nearly 700 square miles in the nation’s fourth largest city. As Chancellor, Dr. Maldonado has overseen the establishment of 15 Centers of Excellence, managed the building of new campuses, and created partnerships with numerous four-year universities and private industries. Dr. Maldonado’s leadership led to his being named a finalist as the 2017 nonprofit CEO of the year by the Houston Business Journal’s C-Suite Awards Committee. Dr. Maldonado is an accomplished engineer, civic and business leader who became President of Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Harlingen in 2008. Three years later, he was named Vice Chancellor for Institutional Effectiveness and Commercialization for the statewide TSTC System. He has served as the Interim Chairman of the Border Governors Conference on Science and Technology, where he worked to foster bi-national research and technology exchange with scientists across the U.S. and Mexico border.

4

Dr. Maldonado has led legislative efforts to create high school/college

dual enrollment opportunities in Texas and has served as a board member and twice as president of the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District. Recognized by the Texas Tech University Industrial Engineering Academy for his contributions to industry, education and government, Dr. Maldonado was also appointed by the governor to serve as a Regent of the Texas State Technical College System. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the non-profit Houston Technology Center, the largest technology incubator and accelerator in Texas. Dr. Maldonado also serves on the Greater Houston Partnership Board of Directors and the Education Advisory Committee, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Community and Technical Colleges Formula Committee.

Through his involvement with the education community and businesses across the nation, Dr. Maldonado is actively working with the Texas state legislature on education initiatives regarding school finance and education in the STEM arena - science, technology, engineering and math. Dr. Maldonado holds Bachelor and Masters of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, a Doctorate in Systems and Engineering Management from Texas Tech University, and is an alumnus of the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.

Employee Expectations & Responsibilities &n Responsibilities EEmployee mployeExpectations eExpectatio s&Responsibilities

Attendance, Overtime and Punctuality To maintain a productive work environment, HCC expects you to be reliable and punctual in reporting for work. Absenteeism and tardiness result in a burden on other employees and on HCC’s operations. You are required to notify your supervisor in advance, whenever possible, of any absence, tardiness, or early departure. When prior notification is not possible, you should call the supervisor/designee no later than thirty (30) minutes after your regularly scheduled starting time, or in the event of an early departure, well in advance. When providing notification, give the reason(s) and the estimated duration of the absence, tardiness, or early departure as well as the date or time of expected return. An employee who is absent for three (3) consecutive workdays without notifying his or her supervisor is subject to termination as a “voluntary resignation.” HCC has the right at any time to require an employee to submit a doctor’s note to verify absences due to claims of illness. The first occurrence of No Call/No Show will result in a written warning and the second separate offense may result in termination of employment with no additional corrective action steps. Any No Call/No Show lasting three (3) days is considered a “voluntary resignation” or “job abandonment” and may result in immediate termination of employment or non-renewal of contract. If the supervisor has already begun corrective action for attendance and/or punctuality when a No Call/ No Show occurs, the corrective process may be accelerated to the final step. HCC may consider extenuating circumstances when determining corrective action for No Call/No Show and has the right to exercise discretion in such cases.

Discrimination and Harassment Prevention Houston Community College is committed to a workplace and educational environment tree of discrimination and harassment based upon race, color, religion, age, sex, gender identity and gender expression, national origin, disability, veteran status, and/ or sexual orientation. If you believe you have been subject to harassment, you are encouraged to inform the alleged offender that the conduct in question is unwelcome or offensive. If this approach is unfeasible or unsuccessful, you may pursue informal or formal resolution. Use of the informal resolution process is not a prerequisite to the filing of a formal complaint. Any supervisor, administrator, and manager who receives a complaint of harassment or who observes harassment in his or her department shall promptly report the harassment complaint to the Office of Institutional Equity, college administrator at Dean’s level or above or the Human Resources Generalist assigned to the supervisor’s campus or facility.

42

The Office of Institutional Equity will notify the person being charged that a complaint has been filed and will notify the accused employee that retaliation against the complainant is prohibited. The Director of Institutional Equity or his or her designee will offer the accused party an opportunity to confirm or rebut the charge. If appropriate, the Office of Institutional Equity will conduct negotiations with both parties and try to reach a mutually agreeable resolution. The accused employee or student shall have the opportunity to submit a written response within seven working days of receipt of the complaint. If the harassment complaint is against the Director of Institutional Equity then the Office of the Chancellor shall transmit the complaint to the accused for a response. The Compliance Officer for discrimination, harassment. EEO, and Title IX complaints at Houston Community College is: James David Cross, Director of Institutional Equity 3100 Main, MC 1105, Houston, TX 77002 | 713.718.8271

Employee Standards of Conduct When accepting a position with HCC, you agree to practice: • Integrity by maintaining an ongoing dedication to honesty and responsibility. • Trustworthiness by acting in a reliable and dependable manner. • Evenhandedness by treating others with impartiality. • Respect by treating others with civility and decency. • Compliance by following state and federal laws and regulations and college policies. • Confidentiality by protecting the integrity and security of college information; stewardship by exercising custodial responsibility for College property and resources. • Good judgment in seeking appropriate guidance when faced with ethical dilemmas. • Every staff member is expected to receive visitors with professionalism and take a detailed message as to their need. With these Standards of Conduct, based upon the HCC guiding principles: freedom with responsibility, commitment to excellence and respect for the person. and sound stewardship, Houston Community College establishes its expectations for professional conduct by those acting on behalf of the College, including executive officers, faculty, staff, and other individuals employed by the College, those using College resources or facilities, volunteers and representatives acting as agents of the College.

43

HCC expects employees to use professional courtesy, discretion and sound judgment when engaging in any contact with coworkers, students, community members, vendors, visitors and other HCC employees. At HCC, there is no place in the work or learning environment for conduct that demeans or belittles another person. Those acting on behalf of the College have a general duty to conduct themselves in a manner that will maintain and strengthen the public’s trust and confidence in the integrity of the College and to act in accordance with their obligations to the College. Any person who intimidates, threatens, or exhibits violent or disruptive behavior while on campus or when acting on behalf of HCC away from campus will be removed from the classroom/workplace. Employees exhibiting these behaviors are subject to further disciplinary action. See HCC Policy/Procedure C.11 Workplace Violence for more information.

Personal Appearance & Uniforms All HCC employees are expected to arrive for work in appropriate, professional attire. Some basic essentials of appropriate dress include the need for the individual and for clothing/uniform to be neat and clean. Managers and supervisors have a responsibility to determine a professional standard of dress for their work area. The Communications office at Coleman prefers a modest business casual attire. • No t-shirts, extreme low-cut or spaghetti straps. • No jeans, sweat pants, shorts or leggings. • Appropriate skirt lengths only (no shorter than finger-tip reach). • No flip-flops. Employees must adhere to dress standards or uniforms that have been established in their department. Employees who do not meet the professional standard may be sent home to change and will not be paid for time off. An employee who is unsure of dress standards that are appropriate for the particular workplace should check with their manager or supervisor for clarification.

Workplace Violence Workplace Violence is any threat of harassment, intimidation or coercion. HCC has a long-standing commitment to promoting a safe and secure academic and work

44

environment that promotes the achievement of its mission. All HCC employees are expected to maintain a working and learning environment free from violence, threats of harassment, intimidation or coercion. HCC does not tolerate any type of workplace violence. Employees are prohibited from making threats or engaging in violent activities. Incidents and threats of workplace violence are not to be ignored by any HCC employee. Workplace violence should promptly be reported to HCC Police Department or call 911. Additionally, faculty and staff are encouraged to report behavior that they reasonably believe poses a potential for workplace violence. This list of behaviors, while not exhaustive, provides examples of conduct that is prohibited: • Causing physical injury to another person • Making threatening remarks or engaging in behavior that can be perceived as threatening by another employee or other person on HCC property or while engaged in HCC business • Aggressive or hostile behavior that creates a reasonable fear of injury to another person • Intentionally damaging HCC property or property of another employee or other persons on HCC property or engaged in HCC business • Committing acts motivated by, or related to, sexual harassment or domestic violence All individuals who believe they have been the victim of a crime have the right, and are encouraged, to report the incident to the HCC Police Department and their supervisor. HCC employees who knowingly make false and malicious complaints of workplace violence will be subject to disciplinary action and/or referral to civil authorities as appropriate. HCC shall maintain the confidentiality of investigations of workplace violence to the extent possible. HCC will act on the basis of anonymous complaints where it has a reasonable basis to believe that there has been a violation of this policy, and that the safety and well-being of HCC employees would be served by such action. Retaliation against anyone for acting in good faith for making a complaint of workplace violence is a violation of this policy. Those found responsible for retaliatory action will be subject to discipline up to and including termination.

Work Schedules As a participant in our intern/work study programs, you are deemed a part-time employee and not allowed to exceed 19.5 hours per week. Your work schedule has been agreed upon by yourself and your supervisor. Individuals seeking to make changes in their work schedule must submit their request in writing and obtain prior approval from their immediate supervisor.

Workflow Each Assignment • Never close a document without performing a spell check first. • Protect your work with saving your document regularly. • Every document should have the native (editable) file and it’s publish-ready exported version (pdf or jpg) in your working folder. • Frame-check: Flier assignments designed for posting in-house must be “framechecked” to confirm margin settings are appropriate.

Work Study and Intern Daily Procedure BEGIN: Please see the Communications Administrative Assistant to confirm the priorities of the day. END: Please bring your current projects to the Communications Administrative Assistant 30 minutes prior to the end of your shift to allow time for corrections to be made before you leave.

Electronic Filing Standards & Naming Conventions It is imperative that you help us maintain consistency in our project names. When your assignment is named, it will be formatted according to our file system and will include a 4-letter acronym for the requesting department. Please keep your master copies to a minimum. Once finalized, delete all prior drafts and add (FINAL) to the end.

AP Style Reference Guide

AP Style - Reference Guide Academic Degree

• Use an apostrophe when spelling out academic degrees. • Use abbreviations when you list credentials after a name; separating them with commas.

Acronyms/ Abbreviations

• Use abbreviations for well-known organizations such as FBI, DEA, NFL. • For uncommon abbreviations spell it out when first mentioned then use abbreviations. • Well-known states or countries do not need an abbreviation after them such as Atlanta, Houston, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, etc. • See “State Abbreviations” for further detail.

Addresses

• Where writing out a complete address abbreviate the street. Example: 1234 Gardenview St. or Ave. or Dr. • When using just the street name spell out. Ex: Richmond Road, Airport Boulevard.

Capitalization

• Capitalize common nouns when part of a proper name. Ex: the Democratic Party, the Mississippi River. • Capitalize formal titles that come before a name. Ex: Director Adrena Dow, Administrative Assistant Anita Wolf-Graves. • Never capitalize job descriptions such as police officer, teacher, doctor.

Dates/Times/Days

• Thursday, July 4, 2018 • Don’t use colons on the hour, use only for hours and minutes. Example: 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. • Spell the days of the week out, don’t abbreviate. • Long months can be abbreviated but March, April, May, June and July should be spelled out.

Names

• Use a person’s first and last name when first mentioned and thereafter use their last name. Ex: Program Director Rhonda Jones led the speech. Jones said children are the future. •

Don’t use titles such as Mr., Mrs., Miss or Ms. unless asked to do so.

55

Punctuation

• Apostrophes • For plural nouns ending in s, add only an apostrophe. • For singular common nouns ending in s, add ‘s. • For singular proper names ending in s, use only an apostrophe. • For singular proper names ending in s sounds such as x, ce, and z, use ‘s. • For plurals of a single letter, add ‘s. • Do not use ‘s for plurals of numbers or multiple letter combinations. • Bullets • AP style is to use dashes, not bullets, for lists that follow a colon. • After each bullet, capitalize the first letter and use periods at the end of each item. • Colons • Capitalize the first word after a colon only if it is a proper noun or the start of a complete sentence. • They go outside quotation marks unless they are part of the quoted material. • Commas • Don’t use a comma before a conjunction in a simple series. • Use a comma for series that include elements containing “and” or “or.” • Placed inside parentheses. • Hyphens • Use hyphens to link words in a compound adjective. • Do not use a hyphen if the construction includes very or an adverb ending in -ly. • Parentheses • Avoid using parentheses if possible. • Period • Use when one space after the end of a sentence. • Place inside parentheses. • Quotation marks • Should be used only for a quote within a quote. Do not use for emphasis. • Semicolon • Use to clarify a series that includes a number of commas. • Include a semicolon before the conjunction.

Titles

• Use only one space between sentences.

Some Technological terms

Formal titles are capitalized and abbreviated when used before a name. Ex: President Obama, Sen. Chris Van Hollen. Capitalize formal titles when they appear before a person’s name. Informal titles are lower case, titles that appear before a person’s name or follow a person’s name. Never capitalize a job description. Book titles, movies, recordings, television shows and similar works are set off in quotation marks, with principal words capitalized.

BLACK History Month

Trivia and Treats for t he Cul ture Coleman Tower | Atrium Tuesday, Feb. 19 Noon-2:30 p.m. Book Signing Available Akua Fayette

Akua Fayette is a poet, interior designer, an author, public servant, a widely-celebrated artist and storyteller. Many organizations use her art for awards instead of giving out plaques. Born the 10th child of her family and raised in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Akua is known locally and internationally for her symbolic artwork like the Three Sister Art, Mother and Child in Gold, Finding the Black Angel, and Black Love and a Cup of Coffee Goes a Long Way (poetry CD). She held a One-Woman Art exhibit at the HCC Southwest Campus, while working on her first book, “A Broken Spirit. Two years in a row, Akua was commissioned by Walt Disney for the Seven World Chefs and has also done commissioned work for Minute Maid award ceremonies. After three years out of the spotlight, Akua is re-emerging with new art, never before seen by the public eye, that will be shown in the second week of this exhibit.

Alton G. Cooper

A Houston-native, Alton G. Cooper, is a photographer and commissioned artist/painter. His work is on display at various venues and art shows throughout the city. At the age of 17, his life took an abrupt left turn when he suffered an unexplained stroke. Twelve years later, he had another one. And then, in 2007, the third stroke ensued at age 43 because of an aneurysm that nearly razed his body. His determination to live life whole again and his love for art brought about his healing. Today, he is an example of going from stroke victim to victorious because he is not only surviving, Alton G. Cooper is thriving!
