Horse/Pony Breed of the Month:

APPALOOSA

What breed do you want to see featured in our next issue? Reach out to Alice at ponytails.alice@hcbc.ca and let her know!

This American breed is characterized by its beautiful leopard-spotted coat, which is the result of a special gene mutation in their DNA. But hang on... what does that mean? Genes are responsible for our physical traits (for example, you may have your mother’s brown eyes because you share the same genes). A mutation is an alteration, or change in a gene, resulting in a different outcome. And your DNA? That’s the combination of genes that makes you, you! Long story short... we can thank genetics, or the science of genes, for the beautiful colouring that we see on the Appaloosa horse.
