ISSUE NO. 9 • EASTER 2020 Welcome to this term’s edition of The Panther. HCBC members are currently spread across the country (and the world), but this term we found many creative new ways to keep up the club training, competing and socialising together online. – Bethan Moss, Communications Officer.

DOUBLE BLADES FOR HCBC IN VIRTUAL MAY BUMPS

This year was the first since the Second World War that the May Bumps didn’t take place on the River Cam, but a group of students from across the university conspired to come up with a socially distanced alternative: The Virtual May Bumps 2020. Crews of nine ran 800m each and reported their time to an entry contact. An average of three different crew member’s time was taken for each third of the virtual course, then an algorithm calculated which boats bumped which, and how far into the course each bump occurred.

HCBC entered four crews who dropped one position overall, enduring competed from all over the country and a gruelling set of row-overs and the world, including France, Singapore, suffering one bump from a fast rising Spain, and China, and the club led an Addenbrookes crew. incredibly successful campaign. HCBC WINS NATIONAL HCBC WINS LOCKDOWN REGATTA NATIONAL LOCKDOWN REGATTA

Faced with the cancellation of races and regattas all over the country as the coronavirus pandemic hit the UK, rowers from Bath Spa University and De Montfort University sought consolation by creating a national lockdown regatta. HCBC entered two mixed teams of eight into the regatta in which rowers traded rivers for roads, running to raise money for NHS Charities Together. The regatta was spread across three days, with each crew member running 2km on 23rd May. After an average of each crew’s 2k time was calculated, the top crews from each division were entered into finals on the 24th and 25th May. Both HCBC crews made the final of the mixed eight

division, and placed first and third respectively. The national event saw 195 crews compete across 236 races, and raised £1,574 for NHS Charities Together.
