23-24 Marks 3rd Year of In Person Learning Bernstein begins third year since COVID, but new COVID wave stokes fears

by Siamus Shakiba, News Editor The World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the COVID-19 emergency over as of May 11, 2023.

The three year global pandemic has affected everyone, including families, employment rates, education, people’s mental/physical health, and daily routines and work situations.

For students, lessons through online learning was difficult. Students were having trouble socializing, getting used to the school schedule, and adjusting to learning in classrooms again. When in person learning had returned, students had to observe social distancing guidelines.

Spirit Fridays look to spread School Spirit

Every Friday at lunch, Leadership will host spirit games in order to build school spirit and have fun with students.

Spirit Fridays began since in person learning has returned to campus. The Leadership class, led by Ms Martinez, have been finding ways to engage students and cultivate school spirit. Students and staff have reported that since COVID, there has been a drop in school spirit.

Some of the games include musical chairs, red light/green light, tic tac toe, and cornhole. Last year, the leadership class organzied a game of Capture the Flag between Seniors and Underclassmen.

During the Spirit Friday games, the school mascot Bernie the Dragon has been seen walking, dancing, and taking photos with students.

What’s Going on with the Track?: An Inquiry By a Concerned Student Our school opened on September 3, 2008. Despite our school being recently established, the school opened with a dirt track. This fact is extremely bizarre. Why would a brand new school not build a new, redtop track? It makes sense that older schools like Hollywood High School wouldn’t have a redtop track, but a school such as Bernstein, that has been around for more than a decade, should have had a redtop track from day one. This raises a lot of issues when athletes need use the track.

The first problem appears on windy days, when the sand off the dirt track rises in the air and not only gets all over the field, but also in the faces of students in PE classes and student athletes using the track.

The rising dust problem also occurs when students run on normal days,and doesn't make for a comfortable run. Furthermore, slipping is common on a dirt track. Without the use of spiked running shoes during track and field events, it can lead to athletes slipping and falling, as students have already been injured because of this.

During the rainy seasons, the track becomes mud and is no longer fit for use.

After the rain, “the Swamp” (how the students refer to the track in this condition), becomes impossible to use for PE classes and athletic events. The mud not only ruins shoes and dirties the surrounding areas, but makes the chances of slipping on the track even higher than before.

Practices are cancelled and PE classes are moved in doors which forces PE teachers to change their lesson plans.

Despite many students continuously asking if or when the track would be updated to a red top and if there is anything they could do to speed up the process, those questions were answered with sidestepping and empty promises, and students remain unsure if a new track will ever be installed.

Throughout all this time, students continue to hope that the track will be changed to a redtop and be made safe and comfortable for everyone to use.

Don’t Sleep on Cheer: Support Cheer this Year

by Kimberly Alpizar, Staff Reporter Many people say that Cheer isn’t a sport or that “it's just dancing”, but truth is it isn't just dancing. It is a very hard sport, just like any other traditional sport.

Although there is dancing, there are times when the team performs and it's not easy. As a flyer, it’s hard and scary being up in the air and staying there trying not to shake or being afraid. Sometimes even being up on one leg or pulling it into place while you are up there. From stunting after a while, it gets tiring, and for the bases, their wrists start hurting and they can suffer catastrophic injuries. Sometimes the flyer falls, or other cheerleaders could kick them, punch them, or could fall on them.

By Siamus Shakiba, News Editor Women across the United States have been struggling to conjure up words after the overturn of Roe v. Wade on June 24th, 2022, in which the right was initially made to protect the ability to have an abortion.

Undergoing the name “Jane Roe'' to keep the plaintiff’s identity anonymous, she filed a lawsuit against a man named Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County, Texas. She aimed to challenge a Texas law that prohibited abortions unless ordered by a doctor.

Then, in 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized Roe v. Wade as the decision to continue a pregnancy or to end it would be up to the woman, and not the government.

Roe is made to specify that we are guaranteed liberty under the Fourteenth Amendment under the U.S. Constitution, protecting an individual's privacy and the right to an abortion. Now, it is confirmed that twenty-two states have made it illegal to have an abortion.

We fail to see what’s next because of how impactful this has been on women and others. The sorrows soar through the roof as we feel the government is forgetting those women who have been raped, sexually assaulted, forcefully impregnated, possibly the worst imaginable cases in presence. How is it expected for a child to give birth to another child?

How will a mother provide for a child when they are mentally, physically, and financially unstable? What is the point of increasing the number of children in foster homes if those children are at higher risk of abuse and neglect?

People all around the U.S. are having difficulty processing the overturn after Roe v. Wade has had its time for 50 years.

Dr. Seuss: Beloved Author, but not a Great Guy

by Mayda Bekarian, Staff Reporter Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is an American writer and cartoonist well known for writing and publishing children's books with rhymes and colorful illustrations in the 20th century.

Some books he wrote that were my personal favorites as a kid were “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” And “Horton Hears A Who”.

Before he began his career as a children’s book author, he made illustrations for advertising campaigns and political cartoons.

In them, he made racist art of African Americans and East Asian people. One of his earliest works was a racist cartoon advertisement for an oil and pesticide company.

He also cheated on his wife, who was terminally ill at the time.

In recent years, Seuss’s publisher has decided to stop printing specific titles that Dr. Seuss is under fire for featuring racist caricatures in his books, including Asian Americans featured specific racist caricatures.

‘Barbie’ was made for an Older Audience SummerBlockbustergearedforOlderWomen, butspeakstoeveryone

Most people interpret the Barbie movie as a kids movie when they first see it. In reality, this movie made by Greta Gerwig, was a love letter to all the girls that transitioned to womanhood, showing the hard obstacles women go through as they grow older.

In the beginning of the movie, everything seemed so perfect in Barbie Land which is creating the idea that there are no worries and just pure happiness when you’re young. Barbie had to make a hard change in her life by leaving Barbie Land. This scene created the thought that she is going into the real world. As soon as she entered the real world, men catcalled her, slapped her butt, and did other disrespectful things to her. This is when Barbie realized that in real life, women are not in charge, they are degraded and viewed lower than men.

Throughout the movie, I could tell that many other people in the theater were very emotional once we all saw that Barbie was crying and downplaying herself. I feel like we got emotional because we went through those experiences while growing up, just nobody really talked about them. Barbie felt depressed, not enough, objectified, and powerless, which I feel teen girls still experience to this day. It shows that this is how society will always be like. You can either build off of it or fall off because of it.

This movie is for mothers, daughters, and sisters. It's for women that can’t find the light within themselves. Barbie isn’t for kids because they wouldn’t understand until they experience what that pain and guilt feels like. I believe that the ending of the movie gave us a message for women, saying that there is still light in the world for us women to find. We are so much more than being a cook or washing dishes for men. We could be anything we desire to be, just like Barbie.

The Earth Isn’t Flat, for the Final Time

by Hilary Lopez, Staff Reporter The Earth is not flat, I keep hearing conversations about how people question whether the world is flat or not. The truth is, it has never been flat nor will it be. It has been scientifically proven many times that the world is not flat. This is only a theory, I feel that many people do not educate themselves on this topic. Firstly, from an astronaut's point of view from exploring space we are able to clearly see how the Earth is clearly round. This is clearly seen from space and has been capturedn many times on photos and videos.Satelites and Rockets navigate around earth and don’t just simply go over it.

Through these satellites we are able to tell how the earth isn’t flat.

It has also been said by scientists that the Earth is curved and does rotate. If the Earth was flat this would heavily impact daily functions and would also affect the routes that planes fly. Earth has also been proven to rotate around 1,000 miles per hour on its axis. Which is a reason as to why a plane cannot fly straight because that would simply only end the place in the wrong location. When planes fly, they fly on a curved route for the same reason that flying in a straight line would only simply be wrong. As we analyze horizons we can also clearly tell that the world is indeed not flat. I feel that people who claim that the earth is flat are people who are not educated enough on the subject.

It will never be flat!

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Benjamin

By Karleen Gutierrez, Staff Reporter This is Mr. Benjamin’s second year at Bernstein! We caught up with him to see how things are going: This is your second year at Bernstein, what are your thoughts about the school?

Mr. B: I went through the whole district, K-12th, I am a LAUSD graduate and my school had high test scores. It was considered a high achieving school, but I’d say the students here are way more polite and mature than they were at my school growing up. So maybe just because you have good stuff on papers and good test scores, that shouldn’t dictate what a school is and who its students are. There’s a lot more to a school than that. There’s so many schools in this district where they just have a lot of problems and a lot of kids are rude, there’s a lot of discipline problems. I don’t take it for granted for one day that we don’t have that [too many discipline problems]. I don’t take it for granted for one day, I really don’t.”

What goals do you have this year?

“So this school year in my class I really want to make Mandarin not just a subject that kids have to pass in school, I want to make it something they’re using everyday. For instance if you want to go to the bathroom, today I said, ‘you have to ask in Mandarin’.

I started a Mandarin Language Club and so I am really looking forward to seeing how that’s going to play out.

I’m looking forward to it because I feel that it will give the students, who are passionate about the language, the extra support that they need to really expand their studying in the language and giving them the support they need.”

3rd Year Since Pandemic: Then vs. Now (Continued from Front Page) It is very likely that teenagers, through the pandemic, spent most of their time on their phone scrolling on Tiktok, sleeping in, which led to many distractions, that had an effect on their learning abilities. Schools across the U.S. have experienced a decrease in scores in standardized tests after the pandemic. Based on these results, it can be said that many students have fallen behind in certain curriculums because of online learning.

2024 Presidential Primaries: What to Know

By Staff On Wednesday August 23, Republican Challengers for President met for a debate at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, WI. Candidates who attended the debate were Former NJ Governor Chris Christie, Former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Former UN Ambassador Niki Haley, and US Senator Tim Scott (R) of South Carolina.

Former President Donald Trump was not present at the debate, although he announced his run for a second non-consecutive term for President on November 15, 2022.

President Joe Biden announced that he will be running for re-election, despite concerns that he is too old. The Democratic Party has not announced debates, but Kennedy family scion Robert F Kennedy Jr has announced a bid to challenge President Biden. A prominent public intellectual, Dr. Cornell West, has also attracted considerable interest for a third party bid.

Morocco Earthquake: Rare, Deadly Quake Kills 2000 From AP News A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco, sending people racing from their beds into the streets and toppling buildings in mountainous villages and ancient cities not built to withstand such force. More than 2,000 people were killed, and the toll was expected to rise as rescuers struggled Saturday to reach hard-hit remote areas.

The magnitude 6.8 quake, the biggest to hit the North African country in 120 years, sent people fleeing their homes in terror and disbelief late Friday.

The quake brought down walls made from stone and masonry, covering whole communities with rubble.

More than 2000 lives were lost and the count still climbing as rescue efforts mount.

Relief Continues for August Maui Fires From AP News While rescue and emergency operations continued Thursday at the deadly wildfires that swept across the Hawaiian island of Maui, many people are already looking for ways to support the response and provide relief to those affected.

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement pledged to match donations — up to $100,000 initially, now increased to $1 million — for a campaign they began Wednesday, with initial support from the Alakaʻina Foundation Family of Companies. An online tracker shows that more than $442,000 has been given from 3,300 people as of Thursday.

The crowdfunding site, GoFundMe, has vetted fundraisers for individuals and families who lost property or were injured in the fires.

Direct donations to individuals or families can be a powerful way to make an impact, but potential donors should be careful in responding to appeals on social media for donations to individuals, through electronic payment apps like Venmo or Cash App, experts say.

2023 Rugby World Cup in Group Stage From Staff The Rugby World Cup has been in the group stage since the beginning of September.

The competition is being hosted

by France. South Africa won the World Cup in 2019 when they defeated England 32-12.

New Zealand and South Africa are the most successful teams in the history of competition with three World Cup wins apiece. Australia has two titles, and England won one title in 2003.

France is looking to win their first title as the host country, and have been the talk of the tournament in the group stage.

The Final will be played on October 28 at the Stade De France in Paris.

2023 Cricket World Cup begins in October

by Staff The Cricket World Cup will begin in October and will be hosted in India.

Cricket is a bat and ball sport that has been traditionally played in countries associated with the British Commonwealth (Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Carribbean, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Ireland).

England are the current champions, who won the competition in 2019 when they hosted the World Cup, their first Cricket World Cup title.

Australia is the most successful team in the history of the tournament, having won the tournament five times.

India and the West Indies have won the tournament twice.

Australia is currently the best team in the world at the moment, having swept the major Cricket trophies within the last four years, including the Test Cricket World Cup, the T20 World Cup, and beat England in the Ashes tournament hosted in England.

Fall Sports Update: Football, Girls Volleyball, XC, Cheer Varsity Football Update

The Boys Varsity Football team are currently 3-2 in their preseason schedule.

The season opened on the road against Wilson High School where they lost in overtime, 44-38.

The Dragons played their first home game of the season against Reseda where they beat them narrowly, 37-36. The Boys hosted South East High School where they won 36-30.

On Sept 8, the Dragons lost to Compton High School in a high scoring affair 62-40. All of the teams that the Dragons have played in presesason are Division 2 teams, one division above the Dragons.

The Varsity teams opens up league play on Sept 29 against Belmont. Oct 13 is the Homecoming Game against Roybal, and the season will end away at Hollywood High School on Oct 27.

Girls Volleyball Update

The Girls Volleyball team are 4-4 in their season, 3-3 in Central League Play.

The Girls Volleyball team lost their first game away against Central City Value HS 3 sets to 0. The Girls Volleyball team opened up their league play away at Hollywood where they beat the Rival Sheikhs 3-2.

The Girls have triumphed over Roybal and Belmont, and lost two matches against Mendez and Contreras.

The Girls Volleyball team will play their last two games at home against Contreras and Mendez.

Fall Sports Update: Continued Cross Country Update

Cross Country begins its league season on Sept 28 away against Contreras. The race will be held in Elysian Park

by Dodger Stadium.

The team will look to further its exploits from the year previous, where the team won the League Title, with the boys finishing runners-up for the City title and the Girls won the City Title, moving the team to complete in CIF Division 2 from Division III. The team has already competed in summer tournaments such as the La Serna Summer XC Competition, the ASICS Cool Evening Invitational, and the 42nd Woodbridge Classic.

At Bernstein, our cheer team exemplifies the true essence of cheer. Led by talented and dedicated captains, Nathalie, Jezebel, and Jennessia, and Coach Seychelles, The team has soared to new heights, leaving a trail of success and inspiration for many.

Speaking of achievements, our cheerleading squad at Bernstein has been working hard on synchronized routines, crazy stunts, and more. These talented individuals truly love showcasing their passion for cheerleading and immeasurable talent.

Looking towards the future, our cheerleaders are preparing for Competition season with ambitious goals and aspirations to bring a trophy home.

‘Blue Beetle’ Review: First DCU Movie with Latinx Hero Blue Beetle has its moments but not pushing boundaries in DC Universe

By Joseph Tejeda, Staff Reporter Blue Beetle was the first movie with a Hispanic lead role in the DCU, the role of Jaime Reyes is played by Xolo Maridueña. In the movie, Jaime comes back from finishing college and meets with his family at the airport. He is the family's first college graduate, and while they are celebrating, he finds out his family is dealing with financial issues. He works with his younger sister to help provide for his family because they have a strong bond.

In the movie, they have a lot of Hispanic representation which is good and the movie has alot of meaning about family, and how family makes you stronger. The movie had a good storyline to Blue beetle and his family, though the antagonists didn't have much of a backstory as I would've wanted they were still decent as a character.

I think Jamie's overall character development as Blue Beetle was really good because it made him closer to his family and he became a hero. The movie never got boring. However, here was always something going on but not too much where it felt too fast past. The movie was 2 hours long which was a good time because it didn't feel too long or too short. I think the movie was good but not anything we haven't seen before in terms of a superhero.

Book Review: Hakomari Series

Hakomari is a Japanese light novel written by Eji Mikage with 7 volumes with English translation. The title of the English version of the series is called The Empty Box and Zeroth Maria. We have our main character established from the very start, namely Kazuki Hoshino, and what appears to be his enemy, an antagonist in the form of Aya Otonashi. From then on, we witness different characters struggle their way through to escape the one behind all of that with the use of a box that “grants” wishes.

One thing I want to praise are the boxes as a narrative device. Each of the boxes were able to create incredibly interesting and unique scenarios with well laid out rules that allow for incredibly engaging situations, forcing the characters to think outside of the box and even commit actions that go against their moral codes, allowing for some well-done character exploration. The boxes also serve as phenomenal vehicles to delve into all sorts of themes such as escapism, identity, the nature of justice, self-sacrifice and how far you go for someone you love.

In conclusion, Hakomari was a fantastic read and is my favorite book series of all time. This series is a 5/5 star and I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers with a bit of romance.

Ahsoka Review: New Star Wars TV Show New Star Wars TV show focusing on Ahsoka Tano is amazing

By Sasha Kravets, Managing Editor The Ahsoka Show has been long awaited by many star wars fans all over the world, from Los Angeles to Chicago and all the way to Israel. The show depicts the events after the Rebels show and follows the story of everyone’s favorite heroine Ahsoka Tano.

The show has six episodes as of right now but the reviews have been extremely positive. Viewers are excited about the continuation of the story and the appearance of Ahsoka once again to tell the Jedi Tale.

Dave Filoni’s writing has been amazing in storytelling and world building since the release of Clone Wars, expanding much further than the movies ever did. All of the characters in his show have deep stories and layers that the audience learns more and more about with every episode of any show by Filoni. His stories flow and make sense and open a door to the bigger Star Wars universe with many more possibilities and bringing together characters ever one loves like Sabine and Ahsoka.

All in all, the show is extremely well made with well thought out dialogue, story, combat scenes and reference to older scenes from the show for accuracy. There are many little easter eggs and details that many other fans notice and enjoy seeing appear throughout.

Concert Review: Backyard Punk Show

Last Saturday, I had the privilege of attending an electrifying backyard punk rock party that left me buzzing with excitement for days. The event, hosted in a modest suburban backyard, was a testament to the enduring spirit of punk rock and the DIY ethos that fuels it.

The atmosphere was charged with raw energy from the moment I arrived. A makeshift stage had been set up against the garage, adorned with DIY punk posters and graffiti-style artwork. The backdrop was a riot of colors and messages of rebellion, setting the tone for the evening ahead.

The bands that graced the stage were a

testament to the diversity within the punk rock genre. From the hardcore thrash of the open-

ing act to the melodic punk rock melodies of

the headliner, each band brought their unique flavor to the party. The crowd was a mix of

die-hard punk enthusiasts, local music lovers, and curious neighbors who couldn't resist the infectious music pouring out of the speakers.

The sound quality was surprisingly

good, considering the makeshift setup. The

bands' passion and intensity transcended any technical limitations. It was loud, it was raucous, and it was perfect.

By Genesis Garcia-Perez, Staff Reporter On Saturday September 2, 2023, I visited a hotpot restaurant called “Boiling Point'' located in Artesia. This restaurant is a chinese style spot with a very cozy enviornment. There were no reservations but the wait was about 2 minutes for a party of 4. The employees were very helpful with any questions and when deciding what soup to order. The soup comes out in a mini-wok in a box.

The soup is served in their patented pot holder with a flame underneath that helps your food stay boiling hot while you dine.

They range from different proteins like chicken, beef and lamb.

They even have a wide range of vegan and vegetarian options. I ordered the mushroom soup topped with thinly sliced pork and a honey boba milk tea with tapioca pearls Rating: 5/5 Stars
