70th Annual Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Powered by

Presented by

By Nancy Miller

At 10 a.m. on Friday, March 2, visitors will walk through the doors of the 2018 Home, Garden & Remodeling Show and make history as the show kicks off its 70th year. Prior to their arrival, hundreds of people, companies and staff will have contributed thousands of hours to what promises to be the most exciting show in seven decades. Presented by Champion Windows and powered by LG&E, the show is designed to educate and inform, inspire and motivate, and yes, entertain! More than 350 vendors will be on hand with the latest products and services. There will be surprises in every aisle and around every corner. The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show says goodbye to winter and LouisvilleHomeShow.com 6

gives a hearty welcome to spring. It’s where conversations with experts lead to picture book homes and backyards, old friends gather and new friends are made. Champion Windows returns for its second year as Presenting Sponsor and numerous years as an exhibitor. Andy Wimsatt says the show typically produces between 150 and 200 appointments for his company each year, making it an extremely valuable sales and marketing tool. “Having the honor of being the presenting sponsor is a tremendous branding tool. At the show, its hard to walk around without seeing Champion multiple times, as we are the bag sponsor as well. While the layout of our booth has not yet been finalized, it will definitely

be welcoming and feature a wide range of Champion products,” he says. Celebrities such as jockey Pat Day, meteorologist Jay Cardosi, and radio personality, Gary Sullivan, were featured celebrities in Champion’s booth last year. What is certain is that the exhibit will tell the story of Champion’s selection of windows, doors, siding, roofing and sunrooms. LG&E is reprising its role as the Show’s “Powered By” sponsor. Liz Pratt says of her company’s participation, “The Louisville Home, Garden and Remodeling Show is a wonderful annual event that inspires new and creative ideas for home remodeling and design. As a longtime sponsor, it’s a great venue where we can connect with our customers and attendees to answer their energy-related questions and offer more information about our customer programs and important services to consider before starting new projects at home.” Kevin Gray, President of ADC Paving, considers the show a jump start to the spring season and a major brand recognition boost to his

business. Having participated for four years, he adds, “There’s a great crowd every year, and people are engaged and interested. I like being out in the public and talking about the company, our business and the BIA.” ADC Paving tracks all of the leads from the show, resulting in 10 to 20 percent of the company’s annual sales. He plans to again present a display that allows visitors to visualize how a road or driveway is constructed of a dirt sub base, a stone layer and an asphalt layer. Stansbury Electric President, Bruce Stansbury, credits the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show not only with producing immediate results for his business, but also for increasing name recognition that will pay off long after the show is concluded. Exhibiting at the show for more than a decade, Louisville Tile Distributors utilizes the event as an extension of its showroom. “Since people don’t buy tile very often, they seldom get out and look at it.

The Show floor will cover 7 acres and over 350 booths of the best of home, garden and remodeling experts in Louisville.

So, the show gives them an opportunity to see what’s new. And they can also walk around and see things they can coordinate with the tile, seeing different products that would go into their job,” says Louisville Tile’s Jacquelyn Burkey. “At the show we get to meet all sorts of people who might not ordinarily come into the showroom. We hope they will get a taste for the styles, colors and sizes of tile we can show them if they decide to come in and visit us in the showroom.” Tom Raver, of Fireplace Distributors, first attended the show in 1991 when his father was head of the company. Tom is now Chairman of the Home Show. “We’ve been an exhibitor for 35 or 40 years in a row. We have gone into a mode of awareness for Fireplace Distributors, and not

so much a sales mode during the three days of the show. We want a select group of potential customers who want to buy now instead of five months from now. While we used to get information from everyone who walked into our booth, we felt we were spinning our wheels with people who weren’t ready to buy at that point. Now we ask better questions to determine who could be an immediate customer. We aren’t as aggressive with the other folks. And, of course, in a way, a fireplace is a long-term type of sale. We’re also hoping that being there year after year, having the same people stop by the booth may trigger something in their minds when they’re ready to buy,” he says. Although Raver will spend most of his time in the Fireplace

Treat a Client or a Friend to the Home, Garden & Remodeling Show Experience The Home, Garden & Remodeling Show is a creative way to introduce clients and friends to products and services that support the building industry. 2016 Builder of the Year George Miller presents the award to this year's winner, Don Karem.

GENERAL ELMUS S. USSERY 2017 BUILDER OF THE YEAR

12 Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com

Introducing the 2017 Builder of the Year,

Don Karem, Karem Built Homes, Inc. By Cheryl Pilkinton LASER (laz er) [Noun]. A device that generates an intense beam of coherent monochromatic light—and the word that comes to a certain Builder’s mind when he thinks of his friends at the BIA. Perhaps it’s due to his sense of humor, or his mischievous personality, but the 2017 Builder of the Year laughs at the word. Stay tuned for more on that! Don Karem, President and CEO of Karem Built Homes and Karem Realty Group is a Louisville gentleman, through and through. He grew up in the Hikes Point area, attended Saint Barnabas Catholic School and Saint Xavier High School, received his undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Louisville, his Master’s degree from Bellarmine University, and later acquired his CPA accreditation. Don has been a BIA member for approximately 26 years and in the past 6-7 years has been quite active. He chairs the BIA Codes & Standards Committee on the local basis. He states, “People just don’t realize how much goes on behind the scenes,” as members “fight” for the benefit of their industry—constantly

monitoring the NAHB to ensure that old (some actually come from the 1800’s!) and new regulations actually do serve the best interests of both Builders and homeowners. For example, the recent regulation requiring drywall in new basement construction definitely adds cost to the Builder, as well as the new homebuyer. While the safety and satisfaction of the buyer is always one of the BIA’s goals, the Codes & Standards Committee is looking carefully to determine if that requirement is a necessity. As In any field, government regulations sometimes lead to burdensome and often costly requirements, and Don encounters these problems on a daily basis in his committee position. The long-range goal is always to offer high efficiency, energy-smart, safe, 5-Star (independently-rated) homes. Policing regulations that might force unnecessary products upon Builders, working with permits for the homebuilder and buyer protection (including government inspections), and often attending national Code meetings—all constitute parts of Don’s activities with the BIA. Don briefly addressed two “growth” areas: the Comprehensive Plan

for Metro Louisville, Cornerstone 2020, and additional future planning: Cornerstone 2040. Regarding new development, Builders must contend with additional traffic, infrastructure, opposition, and other items, but the continued revitalization of downtown, though often slow in progress, is an exciting makeover. Additionally, Floyds Fork is another area growing quickly. Developers are working closely with area opposition and the MSD to address local concerns and infrastructure problems, and to incorporate new technologies—all with the goal of a well-planned community to be enjoyed by all. Of concern to all Builders, according to Karem, is the shortage of laborers in the field, and thus what steps the Industry needs to take to encourage young people to join the building trades. Consequently, another extremely important aspect of the BIA is maintaining a close connection with local high schools and technical schools. In fact, a group of Shelby County High School students have just attended the International Builder’s Show in Orlando to compete against other NAHB student chapters. Married, with three sons, Don laughingly says that not one of them is following in his footsteps, as he likely worked them too hard in their “formative” years. One is soon to graduate and two are still underclassmen at UofL: two accountants and one engineer. The “accounting” bent might be inherited. Although he framed houses as he pursued his degrees, Don first entered the field of business as an accountant in the tax departments at Dairymen, Inc., Cotton and Allen CPAs, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Next, he and a partner built homes together for 4-5 years before he launched his own company, Karem Built Homes, in 1994. Currently, this Builder of the Year shows no signs of slowing down in his busy schedule. His present projects are in the Locust Creek and Meremont areas, as well as elsewhere in the Shelbyville Road corridor. He has other home sites in Jefferson, Spencer, Shelby, and Oldham counties, and he may soon venture into Indiana. He just finished a five-year term on the BIA Executive Committee, and he also serves on the Land Development Committee, the Sales and Marketing Council, the Registered Builder Committee, the Shelby County Council and the Oldham County Council. In addition, he finds time to help with the Building Industry Charitable Foundation [BICF], and serves on the Research and Development group for St. Michael’s Catholic Church to help in the construction of a new gymnasium. Now, about that LASER... When his wife gave him a simple, inexpensive laser some time ago, and after Don tired of bothering the family’s cat, he decided it might be fun to tease (his word was “torture”) his fellow BIA members. So, during meetings, he would shine the laser at the speaker’s ear or nose or wherever, causing the anatomical part to “light up”!—and causing the meetings to erupt in laughter, no doubt. His friends, including Pat Durham, had the last laugh, however. On the night Don received his prestigious 2017 Builder of the Year award—and while he was walking to the podium to the sound of a standing ovation—30 or more BIA friends suddenly “lasered” him! One can just imagine the shocked look on his face; for once, Don Karem’s “laserthin,” cutting-edge sense of humor had to take second place. Congratulations to Don on winning the 2017 Builder of the Year Award. We simply cannot think of anyone more deserving! 14 Digital Version Available at BIALouisville.com

2017 Associate of the Year, Tom Raver, is all smiles with Don as they celebrate their achievements and contributions.
