Nau mai, haere mai ki te Ahurei Toi o Te Matau a Maui Welcome to the Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival Whiria te tāngata is a Māori whakatauki (proverb) meaning to Weave the people together. This is our kaupapa for the Festival as we navigate challenging times for our community. Frayed around the edges, we aim to bring the strands back together, weaving artists, makers and creators into a beautiful showcase of works from Aotearoa and further afield. Our programme features the beautiful craft of our Ngāti Kahungunu Weavers, offers laughter and entertainment with the best comedians, acrobats, musicians and cabaret performers, alongside stunning visual arts experiences and literary events. Throughout, we weave some deep and truthful stories that demand reflection and engagement, to lift our spirits and remind us what life is all about. This is a festival to bring us all back together in celebration of our community, the arts and our humanity. We can’t wait to welcome you and share in two wonderful weeks of exuberance and delight to free your heart and feed your soul.

Now in our 8th year, we continue to raise our sights and bring to you a festival that celebrates the best of Hawke’s Bay, Aotearoa, and once again we are pleased to welcome back some of our international friends! It has been a tough time for all in our community and we at Arts Inc. Heretaunga have witnessed the healing power of the arts as we have relentlessly pursued our goals to bring people together, to inspire and celebrate, through our Exhibition Programme at the Hastings Community Arts Centre, presenting the annual Blossom Parade, our new initiative - The Big Apple Project, and of course the Festival. The work that we do is a result of an enormous community effort; funders, sponsors, patrons, grant providers, volunteers, collaborators, artists, schools, and you - the audience. Our deepest thanks go to you all. What we do is a passion, discovering art entertains and feeds our curiosity about how other people see the world, it challenges us and gives us hope, stimulating our own creativity. It is so exciting to be almost on the eve of the 2022 Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival! It is a high point of our year that I always look forward to; especially this year as we can host a full programme, including international acts, for the first time since Covid turned our lives upside down. It is extra special this year as our beautifully refurbished Toitoi Hawke’s Bay Arts and Events Centre will be the hub of the Festival. It is looking so majestic, and we can all be very proud of it. The Festival will be the icing on the cake for our city centre hospitality and events sector, where we have opened the just-completed Municipal Building, refreshed our streetscapes, and welcomed new businesses – all in time for our annual Blossom Festival and our Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival. Bringing events to our city and across our district is vital to our culture and our vibrancy and I urge everyone to find their gems in the Festival programme. THE FESTIVAL HUB

We are excited to bring the heart of the Festival into the newly opened Municipal Building within Toitoi Hawke’s Bay Arts and Event Centre. The central laneway, with bars and eateries in the surrounding spaces, will provide cool and funky places to meet with your friends after work or before and after a show. Whiria! Whiria means to plait, a call to bring people together, so we are weaving and encouraging interaction. A call to people to come and see what the art of weaving is about. For one day only, at Toitoi’s beautiful Assembly Ballroom. Whiria is a celebration of raranga, the Māori art of weaving, a powerful living art that evokes tribal memories of the ancestors and the arts they brought with them. Fibre art covers a huge array of skills and Kahugnunu Iwi weavers will be displaying examples of their fibre work, demonstrating traditional methods and processes as

well as using contemporary materials and techniques. Live demonstrations where people can observe weavers in action include – tukutuku (lattice work), tāniko (intricate finger weaving), muka (harakeke fibre) extraction, whatu (cloak making technique), raranga (harakeke weaving) and more. Whiria! is a feature event of the Festival and is presented in partnership with weavers and kaiako (teachers). As part of Whiria! an exhibition will feature stunning woven works, paintings and carvings by various Kahungunu artists. There will also be an opportunity to participate in free creative workshops, bookings essential as spaces are limited. Kahungunu entertainers Pereri King and Denise Keelan will take you on a journey weaving stories and singing waiata to compliment the day.

Guest speaker John Turi-Tiakitai will share history and a look into the timeline of weaving. The day will finish with a fashion show featuring renowned Māori designers Shona Tawhiao and Taongahuia Maxwell’s collections. Shona’s work has graced the catwalks in Milan and New York Fashion Weeks. Taongahuia Maxwell designs have featured in Miromoda and NZ Fashion Week. Both artists embrace their Māori culture and have a woven focus to their designs. Traditional and contemporary cloaks and kakahu will also grace the catwalk. Thinning By Eli Kent A play about growth and gravity. In the limbo time between the end of high school and ‘real life’, a group of teenagers leave their city lives behind to go apple thinning. Furnware Ambassador Programme For the past seven years, Furnware’s support has nurtured Hawke’s Bay’s next generation of creatives. Each year the Furnware Ambassador Programme provides a group of secondary students with a unique opportunity to engage with the Festival both on and off-stage – through workshops, performance opportunities, behind the scenes experiences and free access to the Festival programme. The Furnware Ambassador Programme is facilitated by the Festival’s Education Manager Lisa-Jane Easter. In 2022 we continue to work in partnership with the Toitoi Creative Leaders Programme, an initiative designed to build relationships throughout the region and provide opportunities for youth to gain a deeper understanding of the Arts Industry. 14

Tutus on Tour

A carefully curated programme of works showcasing the Royal New Zealand Ballet at their best, from beloved classical favourites to recent works that have claimed a rightful place on the international stage. The pas de trois from Le Corsaire offers firecracker virtuosity, while the joyful ‘Waltz of the Flowers’ and the grand pas de deux from Val Caniparoli’s production of The Nutcracker look forward to Christmas with warmth and grandeur. On the contemporary side, Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain pas de deux (2005) makes its RNZB debut, and Olivier Wevers’ The Sofa (2013) introduces this rising star of contemporary choreography to Aotearoa. Nuit Blanche - Art After Dark After a one year hiatus Napier’s Arts Quarter will once again come alive to play host to Nuit Blanche - Art After Dark. A night of brilliant performances and magical discoveries when Napier’s galleries, back alleys, carparks and lanes will feature contemporary art exhibitions, installations, live music, DJ’s, moving image projections, dance and street performance. Discover the city through the lens of the arts and enjoy it in a unique way. Bring the whole family. Grab a drink or bite to eat from the local bars, cafés or restaurants alongside delicious offerings from local food trucks and pop-up stalls. New Zealand’s Hip Hop and street dance collective, Projekt Team brings you some of the biggest and baddest freestyle names in the country, teamed up with new and emerging freestyle dancers from the East Coast. It’s an awesome opportunity for fresh and raw talent to enter the battlefield with a Biggie guiding the way! Inspired by the personal stories of their diverse cultures, KO AU meaning ‘I am’ is Projekt Team’s first full-length work. Projekt Team share their most vulnerable selves in a new and thought provoking form, where both audience and dancers occupy the performative space. Join us for this intimate dance installation where audiences will be guided between multiple found performance spaces to watch, listen to and take part in the different stories shared by the dancers. The Air Between Us explores a meeting point; between two bodies in space, in perfect equilibrium, crossing boundaries of culture, with curiosity and play. Anthonie Tonnon – Leave Love Out of This Winner of the coveted 2022 Taite Music Prize, kiwi singer-songwriter Anthonie Tonnon presents his third album, Leave Love Out of This, out now on Nadia Reid’s Slow Time Records. After three years of critically-acclaimed and uniquely captivating solo shows, A Synthesized Universe and Rail Land, Tonnon celebrates his new album with a full band and a highly physical show featuring Stuart Harwood on hybrid electric / acoustic drums, David Flyger on bass guitar / synthesised bass, Brooke Singer (French for Rabbits) on synthesisers and samples, and Sam Taylor (Nadia Reid) on electric guitars and percussion. Put My Ear to the Ground Theatre-maker Puti Lancaster died in 2021 leaving a prolific body of work over an intense six years in Heretaunga, telling stories of this place. Working in parallel with Puti, writers Bridie Freeman-Rock and Jess Soutar Barron wrote about her work, and were invited by her to become active participants in her process of devising. When she died she left a legacy: a richness of encouragements, tools and invitations to continue the mahi of creating spaces for transformative change: in people, families, narratives, dynamics and communities. Puti also left a hole: unfinished projects, half-started collaborations, conversations broken off midway. As part of a long goodbye to Puti, Put My Ear to the Ground is an opportunity to engage with some of the themes of her work, and reflect on the intentions and wishes held within each of us towards changed ways of doing, thinking, feeling, being. Bridie and Jess have worked with other collaborators to offer a sense of Puti’s processes and practice. Put My Ear to the Ground is a sensory, transmedia, spatial offering that provides a quiet shelter for reverie and resolve. We Will Rise Again Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 - ‘Resurrection’ The Resurrection Symphony is an appropriate collaboration for the current turbulent times, taking the audience on an exhilarating and emotional journey through this moving piece, and reminding us of the importance of experiencing live music together as a community. This presentation features several of Hawke’s Bay’s finest musical organisations and groups, with renowned soloists. Written by Gustav Mahler and first performed in 1895, Resurrection swiftly followed his first symphony, which was in itself a titanic effort. Mahler stretched the symphonic form, both in length and emotional levels, for his second symphony and was possibly inspired by his experience attending the funeral of famous conductor Hans Von Bülow. The first movement reflects mourning and darkness, leading progressively through the second and third movements to a more hopeful and victorious ending where the human voice reflects resurrection surpassing obstacles and the call to the final judgement. “With wings that I have gained I will rise! You will rise, yes, you will rise again!” Conducted by José Aparicio. Hello Darkness By Peter Wells, Adapted by Victor Rodger While receiving treatment for prostate cancer, writer Peter Wells – an intensely private person – reached out to the world via Facebook, where he examined his life as he also contemplated the end of it. Peter’s posts were collated and published under the title Hello Darkness. Now, award-winning playwright Victor Rodger (Black Faggot, ONZM 2021) has adapted Hello Darkness as a one man show. Directed by Shane Bosher (2021 Arts Laureate) and featuring Roy Ward (Brokenwood Mysteries), Hello Darkness is both moving and amusing. In Peter’s words: “During that time, I received in return an explosion of aroha on that most cynical of mediums – the internet. There was advice, commentary, encouragement, accompaniment. I made something out of nothing, if near death experiences can be said to be nothing. A Boy Called Piano Auckland 1963. Three eleven year old boys meet in a cell in the Family Court. Two Māori and one Samoan: Wheels, Piwi, and a boy called Piano. There begins a story of darkness, abuse and pain, but also resilience as the boys seek to survive through the power of friendship, culture, music and the human spirit. Growing from the award-winning collaboration of The White Guitar’s creative team, Pacific NZ theatre company The Conch is proud to walk beside Fa’amoana John Luafutu and the Luafutu Aiga as they courageously bring the true story of Fa’amoana’s experience - alongside thousands of Māori and Pasifika children - into the light. Exploring the story of The Magic Flute and the special way that all the elements of drama, music, staging, lighting and costume help bring the action to life. With a highly engaging format, students will be inspired and convinced that opera is something everyone can enjoy - it’s just storytelling after all! This is the perfect opportunity for schools to use The Magic Flute opera for project-based learning. Heretaunga, Uku Clay Hawke’s Bay is a feast for avid ceramics enthusiasts, featuring some of the best clay works from our region and around New Zealand. THE WOVEN WOMEN PRESENT

Wāhine

Weaving together intimate sound stories and powerful portrait photography, Wāhine is an immersive multi-media arts exhibition that amplifies Māori women’s voices around Aotearoa. Wāhine offers communities an opportunity to come together, to be enriched and inspired by these raw, honest and vulnerable stories – stories that touch on the joys and inspirations, the troubles and tribulations, and the resilience that has moulded these wāhine into the women they are. The deeply personal words of each interview are woven together from real-life recordings captured by the women themselves and accompanied by portraits taken at each woman’s home, marae, or their chosen location. As it travels around Aotearoa, Wāhine expands at each new location, inviting a wāhine from a local iwi to join the kaupapa and hold space for the other women. Waiohiki Creative Arts Village

Waiohiki Creative! A warm welcome awaits visitors to the thriving arts hub that is Waiohiki Creative Arts Village. A community of more than 100 potters, painters, sculptors and mixed-media artists, the village nurtures the flame of a long-established creative tradition on the site. Come out to see artists at work, try your hand at family-friendly pottery and stone- carving workshops or enjoy a spectacular fire festival.

Earth, Food and Fire A wonderland of flickering flames will light up the Arts Village. Wander among small and large fire sculptures by artists including Ricks Terstappen and Lance Greaves; enjoy live music, food stalls, the ancient Japanese art of Raku pottery firing, African drumming, fire performers; and luxuriate in the warmest welcome in Hawke’s Bay. A feature of Friday’s festival will be Te Ahi Kaaroa tributes to the village’s much loved master carver Hugh Tareha, who died in May.

FRI 21 - MON 24 OCT, 10am-4pm Taradale Pottery Club open studio – talk to the potters at work and play with clay yourself. Stone carving - Carve a small piece of Oamaru stone in an hour or two with sculptor Chris Elliott. Tools and stone supplied, adults and children welcome. Bookings advised but not essential.

SUN 23 OCT, 10am-4pm Award-winning potter Scott Brough will help people create small pottery pieces which will be open-fired the following Sunday, October 30. Bookings essential. Children’s Treasure Hunt – unravel the clues that will lead you through artists’ studios toward art prize treasures.

Doors will open 30 minutes prior to each performance. Seating For performances at the Toitoi Opera House all seats are allocated. Some performances at The Blyth Performing Arts Centre and Napier Municipal Theatre also have allocated seating. For all other performances and venues, seating is General Admission, first-come-first-served.

Concession & Children’s Pricing Concession prices apply to SuperGold Card holders, Community Service Card holders and full-time students (with valid ID). Selected shows have Children’s Pricing for age 12 or under. For these shows babies under 1 may sit on a parent’s lap. Many shows have audience age recommendations; please refer to these before making a booking.

Show Times & Latecomers We recommend you arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the show. This will give you time to get a drink and find your seats before the performance begins. Some shows do have a lock-out policy and latecomers will not be admitted unless there is a suitable break in the performance.
