The Ingenuity of Urban Design Mechanism How can we envision the importance of urban spaces?

PROJECT BRIEF: PROMOTING ECO-TOURISM FOOTPRINTS IN TAIPING, MALAYSIA Issues / Potentials: Although the city of Taiping is about 70% redefined, its focus on tourism has not been fully emphasized in the total planning doctrine embedded in the referred outlines. The strategies to achieve tourism-friendly city based on the tourism city concept are more inclined towards projecting mnemonic capitalism and private residential urban form rather than in the production of public activities that fulfil the requirements of a vibrant lived-in City.

The desired physical and spatial form and structure of the completed buildings of the various areas have not achieved the expected image of an Eco-Tourism city mainly due to the overemphasis on the extensive network of traffic roads and also partly due to the lack of connecting pockets of open spaces in the restoration areas. Furthermore, in the absence of elements that indicate successful placemaking, Taiping can lose the urbanity qualities and eventually becomes dull like any other ordinary Malaysian built form. As many of the existing shophouses have been transformed into other public-oriented programmes, the surrounding vicinity is not being re-established properly. These buildings have much potential as the main design catalyst for its neighbourhood. We believe urban design reintervention based on successful models and innovative strategies can support the development of a tourism-friendly environment, which then can revitalize the ‘weak part’ of the city.

Aim: The main focus of this project is to catalogue ideas and generate urban design proposals that meet the prescribed themes outlined for Eco-Tourism City with the integration of philosophical elements from reading materials. From the identified main idea from the readings, a 30-year projection into 2050 is created as it is a phenomenon bound to exist. Hypothetical programs are conceptualised to meet such demands in reference to the future cities. As for the city of Taiping, to project an identifiable urban form recalls mnemonic meanings of a tourism-based city that encapsulates the idea of regionalism is warranted. From this project, new urban design ideas can be generated as alternative solutions in modelling walkable and liveable communities for Taiping in the near future.

A Taiping cultural creative corridor is to generate memories and sense in place in the built environment. It also provides a quality image of it. This is the true sense of freedom movement and experience of psychological space of cultural corridor that acts as a catalyst that connects two main public magnet activity that allows the creation of space to be generated by creative, culture and therapist activity. Combining three core elements: entertainment, history, and nature, its belief can be transformed into a Taiping cultural corridor that preserves the historical culture of Taiping.

The current site environment can be improved by activating it, integrating it with the surrounding, attracting more users, and improving the community’s social well-being. As a whole, the

MOOO ARCHITECTURE DESIGN COMPETITION (Group Work Competition) MACAU [MORPHOSIS] : WATERFRONT FUN PALACE macau [ morphosis ]: WATERFRONT FUN PALACE. What could be post-casino entertainments for Macau?

Macau is set to become the richest city by 2020, and overtaking resource-rich Qatar with the highest GDP Per-Capita. The citiy’s great economic performances largely benefited from gambling tourism and gaming revenues. However, Macau’s dominance of being a casino hub has been facing strong competitions in recent years. As competitors seek to replicate Macau’s success in South East Asian cities like Singapore. The Macau Morphosis explores proposals to diversify the economy with non-gaming related entertainment. As the government rightly outlined Macau’s undervalued cultural significance can be a tireless engine for new growth, as it embraces unique mix of a Portuguese colonial heritage and a thriving local culture. Such interwoven culture positions Macau to attract a wider spectrum of visitors in the globe.

The Macanese’ desires for non-casino entertainment were often forgotten. Most of the existing land were given to new casino investments, to sustain the booming casino tourism. Ci ty development favours Casinos complexes rather than social spaces. The Macau government had promised thenewly reclaimed land will prioritise residential uses and social spaces.

This competition challenges architects, landscape architects, urban designers and thinkers to envision — a Waterfront Fun Palace: Macau — to recover the lost connection between the city and its people. And we would love to hear from you: Is Macau a tourist paradise?

Abstract: ‘ THE TIME CAPSULE ’ Macau which focuses on gambling tourism has lost its sense of identity and is experiencing lack in social space. This proposal tries to bring back Macanese people’s identity by using a concept derived from the idea ‘time capsules’.Located on a reclamation island in-between Macau peninsula and Taipa, the design integrates into the original natural landscape, continuing the material and spatial elements of the traditional buildings in Macau, and explores the coexistence of local architecture, culture and construction. The planning uses Feng Shui as a starting point for the idea of the inner perception of the place. Renouncing the formal and unfriendly grid, the design is informal, multi-purpose, friendly, connected and continuous, while integrating the four stages of learning- engage, explore, integrate and apply. The proposed linear park has different sections for specific uses. These include sculpture gardens, outdoor art galleries, water features, music and theatre performance pavilions, a historical walk, sports zones, playgrounds and forests. The design emphasized user experience and place-making whilst also meeting the requirements of social and environmental sustainability. The proposal is layered with a series of spaces, places and experiences and the result is a cultural centre for the future which respects Macau past and culture.

Design Competition (Participation) Project Prologue:

Building 4Humanity Design Competition (B4H-DC) (Group Work Competition) DESIGNING FOR THE INTEGRATION AND INCLUSION OF SYRIAN REFUGEES IN TURKEY In 2019, the 2nd edition of Building 4Humanity Design Competition (B4H-DC) aims to address the notion of having architecture as a social and cultural facility, by seeking design ideas that would contribute towards the social inclusion and integration of Syrian war refugees in the Turkish border city of Reyhanlı. The competition has two separate categories: it welcomes submissions from students and recent graduates, as well as experienced professionals.

To date, nearly 120,000 Syrians have settled in Reyhanlı under temporary protection. In view of the urgent needs for social inclusion and integration, this competition invites students to propose radical but applicable design ideas for transitional shelters with 5,000 square meters of indoor floor area that could be used for accommodating 400 Syrian settlers, particularly for the wounded elderly, war widows and orphans. The design might consider using an area of up to 800 square meters for welcoming or receiving guests, administering first aids, and providing other basic services, such as food, healthcare and indoor leisure activities. The urban fragments dedicated to the proposed transitional shelters must be confined to a piece of land with 7,000 square meters in the north side of the location, and must observe a vacant area of 10 meters in width in front of the construction site (see the image satellite with the plot limits). It should be designed primarily for serving Syrians, but must embody the spirit of integration and meet the aspirations of local community through architecture, urban and landscape design. The professional category will need to consider, in addition to the requirements for the student category, combining the transitional shelters with another facility: a social and intercultural service centre with 15,000 square meters of indoor floor area. The centre should be proposed for both Turks and Syrians in order to meet both the communities’ needs and aspirations, serving as a foundation for the process of social inclusion and integration between Turks and Syrians. This centre should be envisaged as a meeting point between people and cultures, with a view to promoting cultural exchange, sharing lifestyle knowledge, enhancing social bonds, engaging Syrians into the city’s social, economic and cultural life, and building resilience for the community as a whole.

The new facility should also aim to meet the principles and main guidelines provided in global agendas.

STRUCTURE DESIGN PROPOSAL Project Prologue:

ARK 801 ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION (Group Work Assignment) PROPOSAL FOR STRUCTURE COVERING MAIN AREA OF DATARAN KEMERDEKAAN SHAH ALAM Introduction: Dataran Kemerdekaan (the Dataran) is considered as the centre of activity for the Shah Alam City. It is the prime venue where official ceremonies such as National Day and Maulidurrasul celebrations at State level, and casual events such as New Year are held. The Dataran covers of three main sections; Padang A, Padang B and Taman Arca Antarabangsa. Main events are held at Padang A where a permanent stage is located. One of the issues in organizing such events are that our weather can be unpredictable. Thus, events held at the Dataran depend much of their success on the weather on that day - either hot or raining. It can be frustrating to the organisers especially after months of preparation that an event has to be called off. Therefore, to avoid weather-related inconveniences, large temporary marquee tents are normally erected during such events by the organisers.

Objective: To propose a structure over a large area for variety of outdoor activities including official ceremonies, sporting, leisure and other entertainment events. The structure shall provide optimum sheltering function on hot as well as during rainy days.

Task: In a group of four members each, students are required to carry out a brief analysis of site to justify suitability of the type of structure for the proposal.

Each group will have to make an appointment with the lecturer for consultations during the design process (refer to the Course Schedule).

The site: To cover the main area in front of the main stage including part of Padang “A”.
