Letter from the Editor
Dear readers,
Welcome to the month of March. This month is designated Women’s History month. Duringthis month, we considerseveralhealth issues that plague us. It is importantas well that we remember that the word l-o-v-e is very importantin nurturingour children, irrespective of whetherthey are disabled or not.
In this food insecure world, it is importantthat one applauds the volunteerworkers in the food pantries, the workers in the agriculture sectorand the research scientists, who can continue to work beyond the call of duty to find solutions to the challenges of climate change. The nationalist governments of Guyanahave continued to respectthe multicultural, and ethnic diversity of the nation. The three main religions in this country have had to acknowledge thatthe influx of the various ethnic groups, have led to various worship centers, foods, clothing, and cross culture. Congratulations to the writers who continue to recognize the contribution of women in the Guyanese society to the artistic, cultural, religious and, political developmentof Guyana. Undoubtedly, the librarians in ourmidst will update the bibliographies on the women of Guyana.
Love you, Managing

Quotes of the First Lady of Guyana
1. Receiving the Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up (DUSUSU) Award from women’s rights advocate Zuriel Oduwole, recently, in recognition of the work we are doing to promote gender equality through health and education.
2.
As the first First Lady outside of the African continent to receive this award, I did so with great pride and a deep sense of appreciation of the hard work of our partners. The Menstrual Hygiene Initiative, which aims to end period poverty in Guyana, continues to directly and positively impact the lives of our girls by allowing many of them to attend school unhindered;thereby reducinglearningloss. I am particularly proud of the fact that this projectis

currently benefitting over 30,000 school-aged girls. With the government’s continued commitmentto prioritize the welfare of women and girls, and the supportof the private sector, we will achieve our objective of beingable to provide free sanitary pads to every woman and girl in Guyanain the nearfuture.
3. Caring for animals, justas we do for people, is a core value of our family. It teaches us how to be compassionate and responsible - two of the things which our son Zayd is learning at a young age.
So today his dad and I organized his first of many fundraisers to support a spay and neuter campaign by the GuyanaSociety forthe Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA). His lemonade sale raised $1,850,000 through sales and donations - all of which was handed over to the GSPCA.
A huge thank you to our sponsors, donors, and incredible group of volunteers who made Zayd’s lemonade sale a success.
4. Through a partnership between my office and Texila American University, I recently awarded two Bachelor’s of Business Administration scholarships to Ms Angela Roopnarine and Mr Kevin Caravaio. The duo will read for theirdegree overa three-yearperiod commencingthis month. I wish them both well in their academic endeavours, and wish to thank Texila American University for its continuous support.
5. Last evening, the President and I hosted a dinner for women at State House, in observance of International Women’s Day. We were joined by many familiar faces that have been at the forefrontin the fightfor women empowermentand equality.
6. Our women require the tools that are necessary to ensure thatthey are able to fully participate in every sector of our economy and every sphere of life. They must be educated, trained, nurtured, mentored, financed, and supported in every possible way to guarantee their advancement.
So, on the occasion of InternationalWomen's Day, my Office in partnership with the Ministry of Public Service is providinganother15 fully-funded scholarships to vulnerable women from three local NGOs to be trained at the Carnegie Schoolof Home Economics.
7. Last year, 15 women in similar circumstances received scholarships through this programme. I wish to thank my sister in arms, Minister Sonia Parag and her team at the Ministry for their unwaveringsupport.
