In a world where volunteering in developing countries is encouraged and praised, stories of people
travelling across the world to build houses, schools and hospitals is becoming a normality. This study
looks to emphasise the responsibility of architects working in developing countries, and to question
whether generous intentions of providing spaces is actually having the impact that they are hoping for.
It looks at the ambitions and motivations of volunteers, and the consequences that their actions can
have on communities. From this analysis, a series of lessons and suggestions have been summarised
to help define what can be done to make sure positive impacts and lasting legacy for the architecture
and opportunities we are providing.
