In today’s society all we hear about are negative acts in the world – i.e. senseless shootings on school campuses or at churches, murders in our communities, drugs being sold to our kids, and much more.

We need to hear about and focus more on the good actually going on in our communities, which is why we, Stephen Norton and Brian Pruett, have founded the NWGA Rising Stars Magazine. We are both big sports fans and we want to recognize all the good being accomplished by the youth in the Bartow and Gordon county areas that you may not otherwise get to hear.

The NWGA Rising Stars Magazine is a publication that will have a different focus on sports in the Bartow and Gordon County areas. We will be celebrating all the student athletes in the nine high schools in these areas. What you won’t read about are allegations of coaches paying players, coaches recruiting illegally, point shaving or cheating scandals, drug abuse issues or any other negative story. What you will read about are stories of students who are excelling in the classroom, volunteering in their community, mentoring younger students, serving our country in one way or another and much more. You will also read stories about competitions that you may not normally get to hear about on a regular basis, such as band, choral, literary, theater and JROTC. NWGA Rising Stars will also feature little known sports such as Bass Fishing, E-Sports, Water Polo and many others.

Our readers will also be able to catch up on Bartow and Gordon county graduates in our “Where Are They Now?” sections.

It is our hope that you, the reader, will enjoy the NWGA Rising Stars Magazine as it highlights the youth in your community who are doing amazing things. ADAIRSVILLE TIGERS SPORTS SHORTS: A QUICK RUNDOWN OF A FEW TEAMS FROM ADAIRSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL – Mason Boswell was named 1st Team All Region, All County Athlete of the Year and was selected to the GACA All Star Classic . . . Chandler Shankles made the All County and All Region 2nd Team . . .

Savaun Henderson was also named 2nd Team All Region . . . Honorable Mention All Region: Landon Ayers, Wade Conduff, Courtney Slocum, Malachi Gardner, Nic Jackson, Kyle Martin and Zach Ogle . . . Also named to the All County Team was Josh Brown.

BASKETBALL – Two players were named to the 1st Team All Region: Mason Boswell and Nakiyah Washington . . . Washington reached the 1000 point scoring mark for his career and was named 1st Team All County and All County Player of the Year. She has been awarded a scholarship to play at Piedmont College . . . SWIMMING (GIRLS) – Had five State Meet Qualifiers: Rylee Moss, Harper Powell, Mallory Cool, Kaleigh Rice and Josie Siniard . . . Moss has earned a scholarship to Old Dominion University, in Norfolk, VA.

TRACK & FIELD - Nakiyah Washington placed 3rd in the State in Discus - Region Champion She placed 5th in the State in Shot Put. In both events she set new school records!

TIGERS SHINE OFF THE FIELD AS WELL . . .

MARCHING BAND - Received an overall superior rating at the Armuchee Invitational and Blue Ridge Marching Band Competition . . . First place in Class AA division . . . First in overall Silver Division . . . Sierra Fritz placed second in the Drum Major competition . . .

The Color Guard won the competition and was awarded first place . . . The Drum Line also won first place.

DRAMA DEPARTMENT - Received 3rd place for their performance of “These Shining Lives” . . . Faith Holmes was named to the All Star Cast . . . the award for Best Actress in the Region went to Hannah Turner.

JUNIOR ROTC - The girls team won both State and National Championships . . . The boys won the state competition and finished as runner up in Nationals.

CONSTRUCTION TEAM - Won first place in the skills challenge in the TeamWorks category . . . The winning team consisted of Vidal Diaz Sandoval, Hamilton Noggle and Andrew Bearden.

AMATEUR BASS ANGLERS - Michael Cook and Logan Hunt have won 1st and 2nd in the last two fishing tournaments at Carters Lake and Alatoona Lake . . . Dave Adams and Hunter Nation finished in 8th place out of 32 boats in the same tournaments.

COSMETOLOGY - Jessica Forsyth finished 3rd at the Region Skills USA competition.

PLUMBING - Finishing in first place at the Skills USA Competiton was Connor Bennett.

by Meredith Barnhill Adairsville High School is very proud of and blessed by our alumnus Vic Beasley Jr., who is a Clemson graduate and current member of the Atlanta Falcons. Vic has been very intentional about giving back to our community and high school.

Throughout his life, Vic’s faith is evident in how he carries himself on and off the field/court and he wants to share that with student-athletes.

Although he plays in the NFL, basketball is a love of his and he wants to help teams while also supporting FCA. For the past 5 years, Vic has sponsored various summer activities on our campus.

• The Vic Beasley Jr. FCA Tournament is an adult tournament. 2019 is the 5th year we will have hosted the tournament.

• The Vic Beasley Jr. FCA High School Team Camp is what I am most proud of for Vic. We have 12 teams compete each day.

They play 2 games before lunch and 1 after lunch. Vic provides lunch, a t-shirt for each camper, GHSA sanctioned officials, and we have an FCA speaker who talks to the kids after lunch. This is the 3rd summer for boys varsity and the 2nd for girls. Vic also takes the time to handwrite an encouraging note to each coach that attends.

• Vic Beasley Jr. FUNdamentals camp is a 1 day football camp.

Vic works with the NFL player grant to allow kids (elementary and middle school ages) to attend for free, and they receive a t-shirt.

This camp is staffed by our football staff and rising juniors and seniors.

• The Vic Beasley Sr. Scholarship: each year students apply for a $1000 scholarship established in the memory of Vic’s father. The scholarship criteria are heart, character, excellence, and service.

Vic takes the time to review each application and select a recipient.

Every summer Vic donates the entry fees for the tournament and the high school team camps to our FCA programs (middle and high school). These programs have been able to reach out to every team on our campuses each year in different ways with these additional funds.

Our local FCA Bartow has been very generous in providing “swag” for the kids who attend (devotional books, lanyards, etc.).

The scene is set in Cartersville, Georgia. It is the type of suburban town that needs no introduction; the title speaks for itself. From railroad tracks to high school football games to dawn, the kind of place where country roads meet urbanization. Nestled behind forestry, a couple minutes’ drive away from fast food chains and “Ma-and-Pop” style restaurants, lies the product of growing up here: the students of Cass High School.

It is a world of coming of age, halls reminisced on by seniors struggling diligently through the last weeks, preparing for the world ahead. Even further into their world, tracked down easily with just an ear tuned towards football stadium, flourishes a world of brass, woodwind, and percussion galore. Only a glimpse into this world and you will find Fabian Sanchez laughing amongst friends and making lifelong memories.

One activity Fabian holds close to himself is band. He has been active in the program playing the trumpet for seven years now and says proudly that it fills him with “life and purpose.” This year, Cass High School is delighted to have received exemplary placements and recognitions in a multitude of competitions and performances. Just in the spring semester of 2019 alone, the Colonel band has excelled with outstanding results. In Large Group Performance, the band received “all superior” evaluations. In addition to this, they received an ace from every judge on every piece that they performed. Fabian, upholding the significant role of section leader, has dedicated time, energy, and care to the band and his fellow performers throughout the years; his last year has been no different. On May 3rd, Fabian will be traveling with a group of his peers to Atlanta to perform in the Southern Star Music Festival.

When Cass High’s esteemed band director, Mrs. Pruitt, was asked to talk about Fabian’s part in the program, there was hardly any hesitation before she began speaking. With a smile on her face, she talked about how she has been teaching him since he was in sixth grade. She lingered on his astounding improvements since he began for only a moment: “Now, he is one of the strongest trumpet players in the section.”

According to Pruitt, not only does he outshine in terms of music, holding the position of second chair, he also works wonderfully with the students he helps to lead. He is respected by his peers for his patience and ability to be inclusive. “He’s been a great leader for band because he’s kind and tries his best to pull people together.”

Although the senior year can be a tough, stressful time for most teens when asked, Fabian said he would describe his senior year as “fun, funky, and fresh.” This perfectly describes Fabian’s personality. Although some may know him as the shy intelligent type, he is much more than that when he opens up. He attracts a circle of friends wherever he goes with his fruitful humor. Even with an active social life, Fabian is still a diligent student in terms of academics. In fact, he just happens to be the type of student to create a chess club for his own entertainment. Finding a sense of passion in the club, he has dedicated much of his time and energy to it. Yet the creation is more than worth it, cultivating friendships in between the logical moves of pawns, knights, and rooks.

Despite juggling this plethora of activities, due dates, and academic work, he maintains a positive attitude and a prominent place in the community he has been raised in. Whether holding a trumpet or a chess piece, Fabian’s efforts are always impressive.

Planning on attending Kennesaw State University in the fall, it is no question that he will miss the rustic, small town of Cartersville and the band that he has helped to shape. From the cheering in the football stands to the Coca-Cola memorial- and don’t forget the southern homecooked meals, Fabian will miss this little town as much as its people will miss him. Still, only turn an ear toward the football stadium of the school nestled behind trees, and he can always hear the flourishing sound of the Cass High band play.

EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY EAGLES SPORTS SHORTS: A QUICK RUNDOWN OF A FEW TEAMS FROM EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Excel Christian Academy had two boys selected to all-region teams Rayshawn Womack (Jr.) was 2nd team All-Region and Josiah Mosley (Sr.) was HM All-Region. Both, along with Evan Lee, were selected as POY candidates for the NW Ga Tip Off Club, with Rayshawn winning our POY. In addition to those guys, Robby Poston (Dec.) and Kalil Holley (Nov.) won POM awards from Elite Stone Supply and the Bartow Sports Zone.

Our MS XC team won the NAML Championship (which is our league title) and the golf team is competing for the NAML title.

Individually, Sasha Morgan (8th) finished 2nd in XC in NAML.

WOODLAND WILDCATS 2018-19 WOODLAND HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL SEASON SUMMARY

Woodland Softball finished the season with a record of 24-9 and 14-2 in Region 7-AAAAA, and also won the Region Championship. It was Woodland’s 3rd straight appearance in the State Playoffs and they were fortunate enough to make it to the Sweet Sixteen again. It was their second trip to the Sweet Sixteen in the past 3 years. They have been to the state playoffs 11 out of 16 seasons during the tenure of Coach Roberts.

Woodland also won the City County Championship once again. They defeated Adairsville 6-1 and beat Cartersville 11-3 in the Championship game.

This was Woodland’s first Region Championship in school history, beating Carrollton 2 out of 3 times in the Region Championship.

Woodland’s first round opponent in the State playoffs was North Springs.

Woodland swept them 8-0 and 9-1.

Woodland moved on to the Sweet Sixteen and faced a very tough Buford team, which Woodland lost 13-0 and 6-3 ending our season.

By Erik Green - Features Editor There is a temptation for elite high school athletes to develop tunnel vision, often becoming wholly focused on success in sports and little else.

This isn’t the case for Woodland High School multi-sport star Sydney Molinaro, who carries a 4.0 grade point average exiting her junior year. Molinaro, an All-Region and All-County middle hitter/blocker for the Lady Wildcats in volleyball, is the complete package, according to her coach David Condon. She excels in class and in volleyball, along with soccer, and track.

“Sydney is one of those players that is exactly what you’d want in a student athlete,” Condon said.

“As an athlete, she is incredibly talented. She is agile, strong, and has great jumping ability. She receives instruction and is able to apply what you’ve taught her immediately. As a student, she has

outstanding habits and ability. She pays attention in class and is able to understand complex concepts.

She then applies great study habits to enhance her natural ability.”

By all accounts, Molinaro possesses all kinds of ability. Condon estimated Molinaro’s vertical leap at 20 to 22 inches, and her 5’9” frame makes her formidable anywhere on the court. Her versatility is evident as well; she will be changing positions to outside hitter for her senior year next year. A willingness to change is not always taken in stride by a high school senior, but it is indicative of her team-first attitude. In soccer, she was a stalwart on defense, earning herself All-County and All-District honors.

Defense isn’t a position that gets a lot of attention, but Molinaro made herself known throughout the season with steady play.

“Sydney is a young player with great abilities,” said Woodland girls soccer coach Nicole Heiser. “She usually plays sweeper, but also

played both midfield and forward for Woodland this past season. She has a lot of speed and skill with the ball. Besides soccer, she also plays volleyball year-round, and participated in track for the school. She is a truly well-rounded athlete and person.”

Developing great leadership is the next task for Molinaro, according to Condon.

“She is very competitive as an athlete and as student,” Condon said.

“This upcoming season we expect her to also take on more of a leadership role and she will be transitioning from a middle hitter/middle blocker to an outside hitter.”

Molinaro, who was also AllRegion and All-County in track, is well liked at school and serves as a good example to her peers, Condon said.

“She is a very friendly and wellrounded person,” he said. “She excels at everything she does and is still very likable. She is well liked and well respected by her peers, also.”

Star running back Justice Carter was crowned king and basketball standout Madgie Robinson was crowned queen.

Both are Senior Scholar Athletes who have contributed in the classroom and in the athletic arena.

Carter will continue his football career at Shorter University.

Robinson has been accepted to attend Georgia State University in the fall where she plans to major in Journalism.

Carter rushed for more than 1,000 yards during the Wildcats’ football season and was a frequent team captain during the year. His

leadership, however, was arguably his biggest contribution to the season, according to coach Tony Plott. A model student and team player, Carter brought a positive attitude and tireless work ethic to the field every week.

“He is a great young man that has represented our program and school very well these past four years,” Plott said. “He is a young man of high character. I am very proud of his accomplishments, but more proud of the man he is becoming.”

Robinson was a four year varsity starter at point guard. This season she was Northwest Georgia Woodland Player of the Year, a Northwest Georgia Senior All-Star game participant, a Cartersville Daily-Tribune All-County Team Member, and Player of the Month.

Robinson led the team in scoring and assists this season. Robinson also ranks

second all time in school history with 156 assists. She is fifth all time in three pointers made with 59 and won the Paulding County Senior All-Star Game Three Point Contest this year. She did many other things during games that did not show up in the “box score” to benefit her team and teammates, according to her coach Kyle Morgan.

“Madgie will be missed for what she brought both on the court and off the court to the team,” Morgan said. “She was a hard worker, great teammate, and was always selfless in her actions. I have no doubt that these traits and many others will enable her to be successful as she transitions to the next phase of her life. It has been a pleasure to coach her over the years and watch her growth as a player and person.”

Junior Tennis Star to Naval Officer, Cartersville’s Darrah Made Tough Decisions

The next time you and your family go out to dinner, do a little experiment. Glance around the restaurant and count how many families are disengaged: teenagers with ear buds, parents on Facebook and small children watching Superheroes on tablets that double as baby sitters.

One thing they are not doing is talking.

Those families are missing out on valuable teaching moments. Tell them to talk to their children; with a little encouragement and guidance one of those children might become a nationally ranked tennis player with a scholarship to Annapolis, the United States Naval Academy.

Like Jake Darrah.

A Cartersville native, Darrah is a former tennis standout - rated among the top 200 players in the country – who graduated from the Academy in 2017. He is currently serving as First Officer on Deck aboard the USS Leyte Gulf, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser.

Because of his deployment, and not available for comment, NWGRS Magazine, caught up with his mother, Kaysi Darrah.

“Jake had to make a tough decision,” said Darrah’s mom, who along with husband Gray, runs the family photography studio in Cartersville.

“He loved tennis and appreciated that it got him into the academy, but he saw he had a tremendous opportunity to achieve some other goals he had redefined.”

Mrs. Darrah is referring to the difficult decision Jake had to make of giving up the sport he had been passionate about since he was very young and concentrating on larger opportunities ahead of him.

Like many tennis juniors, Jake started quite young – age 4. He was first coached by Jim Lavender at Cartersville Country Club. Lavender has gone on to work with several of the top 100 players in the country and is currently the head coach at Montreat College in Montreat, NC.

The next step in Darrah’s young career found him at the Stephen Diaz Academy in Marietta. Diaz won the Puerto Rican National Singles Championship in 1992 and represented Puerto Rico in the 1993 Davis Cup play.

It was during these formative years that Darrah also travelled to youth tournaments throughout the US. These trips gave the Darrahs’ more quality time with their son.

Because of the travel, they were forced to home school him as most tournaments began Thursday and ended Sunday. In the toand-fro travel to the tournaments, there was plenty of time for conversation – more talking – along the way.

“They were fun,” said Mrs. Darrah, laughing. “We got to travel to a lot of fun cities . . . Baton Rouge, Mobile, Raleigh. But it was a little hard also. One year we ate Thanksgiving dinner at Ryan’s. You do what you have to do.”

It’s obvious the Darrahs’ communication with their kids paid off. Their other two – son Jarrett and daughter Kendall – are successful

in their own right. Jarrett is a Naval dentist stationed in Norfolk, Va; Kendall is a speech therapist, attending the University of West Georgia, while being a mom to two small children. Mrs. Darrah is convinced it is the time they took to engage their children during family times that helped forge their determination.

“Talking, sitting around the dinner table, which is what American families don’t do anymore,” Mrs. Darrah said when asked how she was able to affect her children positively. “We’d eat or go outside in the back yard and play games or talk some more. There were no video games.

We’d talk about life, goals, what they wanted to be or do. Our son [Jarrett] asked us when he was in the fifth grade what he should do for a living.

We thought about it and I had just come back from the dentist and told him to consider that. Now he is one. He decided that in the fifth grade and never wavered. All our kids are kind of that way. We raised them with a little bit of tough love, but they accomplished what they’ve done on their own.”

Maybe. But those accomplishments are the byproduct of the solid foundation they received while having discussions over the nightly meal.

Call it meat loaf philosophy.

Jake listened quite intently, thank you.

“He was a straight A student at Excel, but now he was competing with some of the smartest people in the country. His was one of the brightest classes ever enlisting at the academy. A ranking officer told them that there were more AP scholars in this group than they had ever had. Jake was nervous. He didn’t want to let anybody down. He was home schooled and had taken an AP course.”

Turns out Darrah’s nervousness was unfounded. He applied himself a little more rigorously and forged ahead. One of his instructors noticed his proclivity to mathematics and convinced him to change his major from Arabic to Applied Mathematics. He did so and excelled, surprising no one, except maybe himself.

But there was still that decision to make. To continue to play tennis in spite of a tremendous work load, or give up his childhood dream of playing professionally.

“I’ll tell you, a lot was happening at the Academy,” Mrs. Darrah said. “He wanted to go special ops, be a part of the SEAL team, and was also majoring in Arabic. Talk about demanding. It is very difficult to be a varsity athlete at the Academy. There is so much on your plate. I think he averaged 2-3 hours of sleep his first year and a half there.”

It was at this point that Darrah made an adult decision. Because he realized where he was and the opportunity in front of him, he realized it was time to give up the one thing he had been passionate about since childhood. Tennis.

“He was a realist,” his mother said. “Yes, he was good at tennis, but very few make it to the professional ranks. He knew tennis had gotten him where he is and was grateful for it, but it was time to change his goals.”

That goal finds him having graduated from the Academy and standing on the deck of a USN missile cruiser.

Not bad for a little boy barely tall enough to see over the net at Cartersville Country Club.

Not bad for a couple of parents who decided there would be no distractions at the dinner table.

Woodland’s Weaver: Great Athlete, Greater Outlook on Life

“ I just enjoy doing it because you can be having the worst day and kind of a bad attitude, but they always have a smile on their face.

Your perspective changes really quick when you see them. They might be in a walker or a wheel chair, and they come up and cling to you.” - Jessie Weaver, on her participation with special needs kids at Oakland Hills Baptist Church’s Angel Ministry.

A special person working with special needs children. It all seems to fit.

Spend a few minutes talking to Woodland High School and Georgia Tech graduate, Jessie Weaver – whose athletic and academic prowess include All-America status, a full ride to play catcher for one of the premier softball programs in the country and a Masters in Education – and you realize that dedication, be it on a field of play or in a youth center auditorium, is not so much what you do but who you are.

“It’s a group for them to have buddies,” said the 30-year-old, of the kids with whom she assists. “The parents can enjoy the services and they know that someone is with them one-on-one and they can participate with the other kids.”

It is Weaver’s second year working with the Oakland Hills ministry, but she doesn’t limit her service to just the church ministry. She is also a frequent speaker for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) chapter in Bartow County.

“I’ve done about 10 of them or so,” said Weaver, whose undergraduate degree is in business management and is currently preparing to take the state licensing exam to become a contractor. “Several of the Sheriff Departments have them. I do a speech, share my story and basically try to encourage them. I try to let them know that they will face challenges and that they will face a time when they have to decide whether or not they will participate in something they know is not good for them.

“It’s more about encouraging them to be kind, not to bully other people and how to handle social media. They need to be mindful of who they are and who is around them. It’s not like when we were growing up.”

Indeed. Weaver grew up in a much different environment.

She is the daughter of parents who grew up sharecropping. They have worked hard for what they have built for themselves and taught their daughter by their actions. In certain circles there is a saying – more is caught than taught. It means we show who we are by our actions rather than what we say.

“They are both driven,” Weaver said about her mom and dad. “They didn’t have a lavish lifestyle. They started from the bottom and worked their tails off. I saw living examples everyday of what it takes to be successful. I also had positive role models around me. Growing up in Bartow County, everybody knows everybody. I wasn’t going to get away with much.”

So, we have documented. Jessie Weaver is an outstanding human being. That is true.

What is also true is that she is one of the best prep athletes to come out of Bartow in the past two decades. After all, it is not often that a player’s jersey is retired upon their departure. No one playing softball will ever wear the number three again. That jersey hangs in memorium to one of the best players the school has ever produced.

And the Georgia Tech softball catcher - who went to 4 NCAA Tournaments and won 3 ACC championships has a confession.

“Basketball was my first love,” Weaver said. “I wasn’t a great player, more of an athlete on the court actually and I grew up playing point and shooting guard. I moved to the post position because I was one of the taller players on the team. I have to say, at the time, I had more of a passion for it that softball. I was intrigued by it. Loved watching Pat Summitt and watching Tennessee play.”

Weaver also played golf at Woodland, playing to an approximate 12 handicap and going to the state championships all four of her years she competed. A long hitter, she was able to translate her softball skills a bit to the links.

Weaver’s break in softball came after playing for a travelling team, migrating from Adairsville to Woodland and catching then college prospect Jamie Fitzpatrick.

“I met her once I got to Woodland,” Weaver said of Fitzpatrick, who eventually pitched for Kent State University. “I caught her. We wound up being best friends. Still are to this day.”

Weaver put up some impressive numbers in her four years of high school ball. She hit .417 her senior year as a Wildcat and smacked 10 homers. It was the second time she batted over .400 as a Wildcat, having hit .403 as a sophomore. Those two numbers raised her high school career totals to an incredible .373. Those numbers caught the eye of several major college programs: Tech as well as other ACC and SEC schools.

“I guess they saw me from travelling around the country playing tournaments,” Weaver said. “Georgia Tech’s business school was in the top 25 in the country and so was the softball team. I also wanted to stay pretty close to home. Tech was a good fit.”

It seemed a good choice. One fraught with good memories.

When asked, one that stood out for her was when the Jackets won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and hosted the NCAA regional that was televised by ESPN. They also hosted that year’s Super Regional, eventually losing to World Series Champion Washington.

Great memories for a great athlete. An even greater human being.

FCA Bartow would like to recognize Cheyenne Spinks as this month’s “Competitor for Christ.” Cheyenne is a senior at Woodland High school where she competes in cross country and track. This year, her cross country team won their 2nd state championship title! However, Cheyenne understands that in the end, it’s not really the medals, state rings, or championship titles that matter. She chooses to use running as a platform to lead her teammates and all others that they influence to know and grow in their relationship with Jesus. Cheyenne will be the first to tell you that while we sometimes get the victory, He gets the glory!

Cheyenne is very active in the FCA ministry at her school. She has served for the past 2 years on the FCA Bartow Student Council Leadership team. This summer, she is going to use her leadership skills to serve as a Huddle Leader at the North Georgia FCA Running Camp. She will also be shifting her focus to getting ready to compete as a collegiate athlete at the University of North Georgia in the fall. She hopes to get involved with the FCA program there as she works on a degree in communications. After college, she feels called to ministry. There’s no doubt that God has big plans for Cheyenne. To Him be the honor and glory!

Since it’s inception, Positive Athlete, an organization with Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward as its lead spokesperson, has awarded over $250,000 in college scholarships to high school student-athletes based more on their character than their athletic performance. Nominating an athlete or coach is a very simple process which can be done here on this website. Student-athletes can be nominated by parents, coaches, teachers, administrators or fans of high school student- athletes grades 9-12. We are looking for athletes who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities, or just have an infectious positive attitude.

Rett Moore – Cass (Football/Wrestling) Senior * Most Positive Football Athlete – NW Atlanta Region Rett is a 4.0 honor student and is a leader in our school building. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the national beta club, and has been a member of the leadership team for four years. His leadership and work with the Special Olympics separate him from the majority of his peers.

Rett is a super person. He comes from a great family and is a true leader. He has served as captain of his football team and golf teams.

He has many accomplishments in sports and academics. He is currently ranked 2nd in his class and has been awarded many academic awards.

He placed 4th in the state his junior year of wrestling. He served as quarterback for his high school football team. Rett has a caring heart for others. He has served as a ‘buddy’ for special olympics all four years of high school. Rett remains humble in lieu of all his accomplishments. Rett spent a year with Leadership Bartow, learning about his community and feeding the homeless. Koby is an outstanding young athlete and role model. He exemplifies what a true athlete is. He is always the first one to the field and always the last one to leave. Instead of getting in his own work, he makes sure his teammates are held accountable and are doing everything the right way. I have had the privilege of having him his four years at Woodland High School and I can’t think of someone more deserving of this award than Koby.

By Brian Pruett Sports in Georgia are a big part of people’s life, especially in when you get to small rural towns in Georgia. But did you know that Bartow County is the home to several talented sports personalities current and retired. Several native Bartow County residents are currently competing in professional sports and there are even more who have retired that have decided to call Bartow County home.

Let’s look at the current sports personalities.

Here are the retired sports personalities from Bartow Andre Fluellen former DT for the Detroit Lions played his High School Ball for Cartersville High.

Ronnie Brown former RB for the Dolphins and played for Cartersville High.

Vic Beasley is currently a DE for the Atlanta Falcons and is a Tiger from Adairsville High

Robert Lavette former RB for the Cowboys and Eagles played for Cartersville High.

Keith Henderson former RB and Super Bowl champ with the 49ers and also played for the Vikings, played for Cartersville High.

Mason Burnett better known by his wrestling names Caleb Konley, Black Pegasus, Suicide, Diamond Connery, Diamond Konley is a professional wrestler

Anthony Seigler is currently a catcher in the New York Yankees organization. Played for Cartersville High.

Trevor Lawrence, who is entering his sophomore year as Clemson’s QB and reigning National Champion in NCAA Div. I FBS College Football. Played for Cartersville High.

Ashton Hagans is currently a PG for the Kentucky Wildcats and while he played his High School Ball for Newton County High he was born in Cartersville.

Sam Howard, who is currently a pitcher in the Colorado Rockies organization. Played for Cartersville High.

Andrew Thacker born in Cartersville and is currently the Defenisve Coordinator and LB Coach for Ga. Tech but also has spent time coaching for UCF, Oklahoma State, Southern Miss, Atlanta Falcons, Kennesaw State and Temple University.

Rick Camp former Atlanta Braves Pitcher before he passed in 2013 was living in Rydal.

Horatio Luro was a thoroughbred horse racing trainer is buried in Cartersville at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Skip Henderson who was an outstanding guard for Marshal University also played at Cartersville High.

Donovan Tate played baseball in the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations and played college football for the Arizona Wildcats. He is also the son of former NFL RB Lars Tate and Donovan also played at Cartersville High.

Eddie Lee Wilkins played in the NBA for six seasons for the Knicks and the 76ers and played at Cass High.

Mark Thompson born in Cartersville and is a retired NASCAR Driver and has the distinction of being the oldest driver ever to compete in the Daytona 500 at the age of 66. He is also the founder of Phoenix Air. Jack “The Ripper” Roberts played in the NFL from 1932-34 and was a running back for the Boston Braves, Staten Island Stapletons, Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was born in Pine Log just outside of Rydal.

Rudy York was a First Baseman and Manager in MLB from 1934-48 for the Tigers, Red Sox, White Sox and the Philadelphia Athletics. As a small boy he lived in Cartersville.

Herbert Allen “Rap” Dixon was an outfielder in the Negro League from 1922-37 for 12 different teams.

He was born in Kingston.

How to Avoid Putting Your Retirement On Hold

A parent recently told me “I am facing retirement in less than two years. I wish I put my children’s hopes and dreams into perspective. College kids aren’t the only ones who take out education loans.

More parents need to understand the impact their child’s future has on their own hopes and dreams.”

My husband and I dream of traveling more in retirement. We hope to get an RV and travel all across the United States.

While we are on target, we need more savings to retire. The good news is that we do have 529 plans for our kids, but it’s not nearly enough to cover their entire tuition for a standard four-year institution.

We are not alone. Many parents start college savings plans shortly after their kids are born. Yet, as they get closer to graduating from high school, we realize it’s not enough.

As parents, we are invested in helping our kids find and live their hopes and dreams. I know I would do anything to help my kids live their best life. But how much am I willing to derail my dreams for them?

I have one easy tip for you to help relieve some of that fear. That is to reach a mutual agreement between you, your spouse, and your child about the educational path your child will pursue after high school. The path should drive them towards their career. Make sense, right? It’s why we pay the $100,000 plus tuition because we expect our children to get jobs in the field their major is in.

Here is why this is so important. A friend of mine has a nephew who had a dream of working in the audio-visual field. My friend and the mom knew the child was not “college material.” The father was fine with the

career his son wanted to go into, BUT he was insistent that he attend a four-year institution. The son attended and dropped out a year and a half later. It wasn’t because of the audio-visual courses, it was the other courses required for graduation that he suffered. That year and a half put the family $20,000 in debt. That puts a big dent into their retirement fund.

Think about these questions: What are the career aspirations you have for your child?

Are they realistic for what your child’s interests are?

What kind of financial support can you provide for your child’s post-high school education?

How open are you to consider other educational options other than a four-year college?

Next, have your child answer these questions: • Where do they see their future?

• What are their career aspirations?

• If they have specific careers in mind what about those careers appeals to them?

• What are the different educational options for that career – four-year college, technical college, certification?

Once you have a clear answer to these questions, have a conversation with your child. Then come to a mutual agreement on a path and start planning for it.

If your child is unclear on what career they are interested in, there are options for you. Many high-schools offer free career assessments. Some are better than others. You want to make sure the assessment suggests actual jobs versus broad fields and that it’s directly tied to your child’s natural interests.

Coaching and Feedback that Inspires PASSION and PERFORMANCE

By Trushar Mody As a coach, it’s your job to help athletes reach higher levels of performance. It’s your job to reach inside yourself to find the interest, words, and passion that encourages others to tap into their potential. It is your responsibility to give the kind of support, guidance, and feedback that changes lives.

To do it well, you must have genuine respect for the individuals you influence and a sincere desire to contribute to their growth. Your intent determines whether what you say or do is discouraging or affirming.

Successful coaching validates what others have done well and guides them in the direction they need to go. It’s not a once-a-year conversation, it’s an ongoing dialogue that motivates behavior and inspires excellence.

Straightforward conversations about disagreements and performance challenges are difficult for both parties. As a result, coaches need, more than ever, to have the ability to influence others and create cohesive teams. To be successful coaches, we need to give and receive feedback at the time it is warranted.

Giving and Receiving Feedback Includes:

Most Importantly, Coaching Should Be:

Engaging Conversations Engaging conversations will help others to agree with you about what they need to do. If a player is often late getting to practice, in your conversation, help the player understand why his or her behavior must change. Then ask the player to make a commitment to be at work on time. Be clear about what will happen if the agreement is violated and be prepared to enforce the consequences.

If someone on your team has made a mistake, ask “At the time this happened, what were you thinking?” Take time to show you are interested in what this person is saying. Then ask “What do you think you can do differently next time?” or “What ideas do you have for how you can avoid doing that in the future?” Let the player come up with the answers. The point is to examine the facts–not to make the other person wrong.

Proactive Approach To be proactive, you must observe what people are doing and be seen making these observations. This gives you the opportunity to eliminate mistakes as or before they happen. Don’t be afraid to analyze mistakes openly with your players or peers.

It can be hard to develop this skill as few organizations (in sports or business) foster a non-judgmental atmosphere and people are scared they will be punished if they are honest about what they’ve done. As a coach, you must earn the right to be trusted based on how you handle errors and mistakes. Modeling trustworthy behavior takes time. You must be serious about this commitment. And you must never punish someone for an original mistake. This creates fear and an inhibition against trying new things. Wherever possible, encourage people to apply their creativity. If you can, let them test their ideas in a safe environment that won’t directly affect the team performance.

Learning to give successful, immediate feedback is a process. In time, players will welcome your feedback because they trust your intent and your desire to help them improve.

Communicating Expectations When players fail, it’s usually because they don’t understand what is expected of them. Clear expectations should be set when players first join the team and they should be held to them until it’s time to “up the ante.” Athletes are expected to have certain skills in place, and expectations can be increased over time. At all levels, expectations should be identified and agreed upon by both parties.

Suspending Judgment When there is a problem, be a detective. An assertion is not proof or evidence and you may not have the story right. Before you decide, ask questions to help you understand the contributing factors of a situation and be open to other points of view. Accept that people can do the wrong things for all the right reasons. Sometimes mistakes happen because someone is trying to improve the process—it just didn’t work out.

Handling Conflict Conflict is inevitable. If handled appropriately, conflict can lead to greater understanding and new ideas. Ask questions and listen for the cause of the disagreement. Let those involved speak their minds, and never invalidate their opinions or emotions. When the problem is defined, you can lead the conversation toward a resolution.

Specific: Base your conversation on the behavior you are addressing, what took place, and what is expected. It should never be about liking or disliking the person or finding fault or blame. It should be about identifying the problem and having corrective action identified and understood.

Descriptive: Use clear, descriptive language and, if possible, demonstrate what you are looking for, and have them do it for understanding.

Stating the ideal: Paint a picture of what the future could look like if a person realizes a higher potential.

Immediate & Confirmed: Give your feedback as soon as possible, and check for understanding by asking the person to summarize the points that were made.

A Two-Way Conversation: One of the best ways to gain trust and develop your own effectiveness is to ask for feedback and accept it graciously.

If the feedback is sincere, find the truth within it and change your behavior accordingly.

If you are not used to giving immediate feedback, it may seem awkward at first. The key is to be respectful of the other person and use direct but affirmative language. Here are a few tips to smooth the way: Use “I” messages. Own what you say and only use another person’s name and comments when you have their permission.

Use “and” instead of “but.” Defenses go up when you say “You are doing a good job, but…” Use “and” to transition to comments on what the employee can do better.

Talk about “what went well” and what you “want done differently,” instead of using judgmental terms such as “what went right” or “what went wrong.”

Be aware of the non-verbal messages you are sending including eye contact, gestures, and tone of voice.

Avoid using absolute terms such as always, never, all the time. They are rarely true and can make people defensive.

If you keep an open dialogue going with those you coach, there should be few surprises. As you are learning to give immediate feedback, keep the end in mind. What you say and do has the power to change lives.

As a person in authority, it’s your job and responsibility to lead others with your example, conviction, and feedback. In time, people will welcome your interaction and you will make valuable contributions to their success.

By Jenn Stocks, DPT Clinic Director Cedartown High school athletes are at risk for many injuries during their career. Knee pain being one of the most common.

Serious knee injuries involve tears to the ligaments which function to provide stability to the knee. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is the most common ligament torn, particularly in female athletes.

The ACL is a major ligament within the knee that connects the femur (the thigh bone) to the tibia (the shin bone). The ACL functions to provide stability to the knee during various motions of everyday life. Primarily, the ACL functions to prevent the tibia from translating forward on the femur, which is referred to as anterior translation. Anterior translation occurs in everyday tasks secondary to force placed on the knee through the quadricep muscle such as standing, stepping, squatting, etc. The more force produced by the quadriceps, the more stress is placed on the ACL. Secondly, the ACL acts to resist rotational movement of the knee as it occurs in cutting, pivoting, and twisting. Without an ACL, simple tasks would become more difficult not to mention cutting and pivoting.

When compared with the same high-risk sports, females are up to 6x more likely to experience an ACL tear. This is due to various differences between males and females, some factors that are modifiable and some are not. Females naturally have different hormone levels in their bodies compared to males. Females produce more estrogen and relaxin creating a more flexible environment. The variation in these hormones

throughout a month can alter the functions of other muscles and nerves that control the knee; placing increased stress on the ACL. Additionally, females have a greater imbalance between their quadriceps and hamstring muscles with the quadriceps being stronger than the hamstrings.

Just as the quadriceps work to anteriorly translate the tibia, the hamstrings do the opposite. Thus, if the hamstrings are weaker compared to the quadriceps, the ACL is placed under additional stress to prevent anterior translation. The last major difference between males and females is jumping biomechanics. Females tend to land with knees buckled inward, decreased knee bend, and decreased forward trunk lean. These characteristics tend to place more stress on the quadriceps, decreased activation of the gluteal muscles, and decreased shock absorption leading to higher risk of ACL tears.

The good news is most of the factors leading to increased risk of ACL tears are modifiable and through training can reduce the risk for ACL tears. Sportsmetrics™ is one of those programs. Sportsmetrics™ is a proven and effective method for reducing ACL injuries and improving jumping biomechanics in athletes of all ages, particularly females.

Charis McRoy (Georgia-Cumberland Academy 10th grader) is an accomplished musician, as well as a recently published author. Her inspiration for writing her first book, The Star: A Peek Inside Esther’s Diary, came from reading the Dear America Series. She felt the need to write about a Biblical character who followed God’s leading, even when she couldn’t understand why. Her desire to write Esther’s story led Charis on an extensive journey of research in preparation for writing the book.

As her thoughts were put on paper, she kept feeling the need to make sure that the reader would take away the following understandings: Sometimes God asks you to do some uncomfortable things even when you can’t see the reason, but only He can.

God will take difficult situations and somehow, as only God can, make everything work together for good (Romans 8:28).

Well, from this reader’s perspective, I believe she hit her mark for this book. We are so proud of Charis for using her God-given gifts to share a message of hope in The Star: A Peek Inside Esther’s Diary.

I asked Charis, “What is the next book?” Her response was, “I am working on two books—a book about a girl from WW1 and a book about an Alaskan adventure”.

We are thrilled to have budding author, Charis McRoy, in our school.

She is an inspiration and a blessing in many ways and we can’t wait to see how God will use her talents in the future!

Use Show, Message to Encourage Youth

A worldview is commonly known as a set of beliefs. It has been defined by others as fundamentals of thinking that ground and influence a person’s actions.

There are positive and firmly grounded ones. There are also those that are thin in logic and morality and generally make us shake our collective heads.

Unfortunately, we see more of the kind that make us shake our collective heads than not.

But then we are introduced to youth in our county like Georgia Cumberland Academy junior Dylan Cannon and his friends. Their desire to encourage others and act as positive role models are proof positive.

Not everyone in this world are takers. There are some givers as well.

“It’s really cool to see how you affect them,” said Cannon, of the smaller children for which he and his team do gymnastic shows. “I like seeing their reactions to some of the things we do in the shows. They smile and get into it. I think, overall, we’re a good influence.”

The show is one they call Acrofest, a combination of gymnastics, cheer dance and stunts. Cannon and his friends entertain kids in elementary schools and participate in Acrofest meets as they pass on their positive message.

This group from Georgia Cumberland Academy – which consists of eleven girls and 23 guys - personifies what it means to be selfless teenagers. Some have described Cannon, one of the leaders on the team, as having “a caring attitude regarding others and a strong work ethic.” Traits to which any generation aspires.

The young man, who didn’t start gymnastics until the ninth grade, has now perfected the bulk of the team’s necessary stunts. One includes him jumping rope while atop a large ball.

“We do a couple of shows,” Cannon said. “One is a mixed bag that consists more of elevators and three high buildings. We also do one we call Cirque, that is more like Cirque du Soleil.”

Elevators and three high buildings are stunts that stack bases and flyers into different formations.

Cannon and the team are more than a show. There is substance to them. He – and his teammates – are people of faith.

Cannon, so much so, that he participated recently in a short term mission trip to a Native American reservation in Holbrook, Arizona. There, he and the team encouraged and taught residents about what it meant to have a closer walk with God.

The theological message continues. One of the routines his team performs for the children is called “A Tribute to God.”

The troupe is in demand as they have traveled to Keene, Texas, Washington Divinity in the District of Columbia, Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan and Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, TN.

They are travelling for one reason. To encourage and motivate others to good deeds.

The Bible says that we will know a tree by its fruits.

With their message and ministry, Cannon and the rest of the Georgia Cumberland Academy Gymnastics Team is most assuredly planting seeds.

Five of the starters are freshman . . . Look for them make the playoffs this year for a record setting third consecutive year.

Second appearance ever for a Gordon Central girls team in the tournament BOYS GOLF - Return all members of year’s area Champions squad . . . Look for another quality year from Jordan Hardin, Joshua Hardin, Isaac McEntyre, Matthew Bryson, Zeb Reddix, Steven Jones, Alex Neal, Caleb Freeman, Seth Wolfe, Chandler Huffman . . . So far this season, they have not lost a match to a regional opponent.

GIRL’S TRIO - Katelyn Jones, Kaige Hegarty, & Sierra Scott tied for 1st place with Bremen . . . It was Jones 4th consecutive title in Girl’s Trio. Congratulations to her as she won every year she was eligible . . .

SoNORAVILLE PHoeNIX SPORTS SHORTS: A QUICK RUNDOWN OF A FEW TEAMS FROM SONORAVILLE BASEBALL- Wyatt Castoe batted .458 with 38 hits in 25 games while setting a school stolen base record with 26 for coach Daniel McArthur’s Phoenix (11-14), which finished fifth in Region 6-AAA...Senior Grant Hegwood committed to play baseball at Shorter University and six players hit over .300 for the year.

GIRLS BASKETBALL - The Sonoraville Lady Phoenix finished with a 23-9 record, winning the 6-AAA Region Championship and making history by advancing to the program’s first ever AAA State Final Four. Junior Maliyah Parks was named MVP of the team, coached by Stephanie Caudell.

Parks averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds for the season. She was a 6-AAA 1st team All-Region selection, was named to the GACA AAA All-State Team, played in the GACA Junior All-Star game, was named AJC AAA All-state honorable mention, and selected as a Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps All-Star.

Other award winners for the team include: Abby Chambers – 6AAA 1st team All-region, Best Defensive Player Award; Alexa Geary – Best Offensive Player Award; Lindsay Bowman – Most Improved Player Award; Grace Darnell – Coach’s Award, NWGA Tip-off Club Senior AllStar game; Emma Garland – H.E.A.R.T. Award

WRESTLING-The Sonoraville wrestling team turned in a tremendous showing this season, winning the AAA state traditional championship.

Sonoraville defeated North Hall for the championship by a score of 172168.5. The Phoenix also posted a 34-1 dual meet record, finishing first in the following tournaments: Cartersville HS Hurricane Duals (16 teams), Woodstock Invitational (18 teams), Allatoona HS Parley Invitational (13 teams), North Paulding Duals (16 Teams), Calhoun New Year’s Duals (12 teams), South Paulding Duals (16 teams), AAA Area Duals (9 Teams), Area 3A Traditional Tournament (9 teams), and third in the AAA State Duals (12 teams)…Trevor Budrick (145 lb) won a rare fourth state championship and John Knight (195 lb) was also named state champion…coach Randy Steward was named the Georgia High School Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Sonoraville High School Valedictorian

By Brian Pruett Gordon County is home to some great high school teams with several state championships to their name. But did you know that there are some notable sports personalities from the Gordon County area.

Kris Durham is a WR who played in the NFL for the Seahawks, Lions, Titans and Raiders and currently playing for the Parma Panthers in the Italian Football League. He played for Calhoun High.

Tim Pharr currently lives in Resaca and is a professional Calf Roper.

Dale Jerome Willis was a pitcher and played one season for the Kansas City Athletics in 1963.

William Henry Thompson was born in Calhoun and was an Olympic Archer and won two bronze medals in the 1904 Summer Olympics.

Life does not go or happen as we always plan or think it should go. A metro-Atlanta native and positive young man Michael McKay experienced the harsh, bitter twists of life during high times in his life.

Michael McKay was the student body president of Campbell High School (Smyrna, Ga.), Quarterback of the football team, and upon graduation a HOPE grant recipient. On top of all of that Michael received an athletic scholarship to Gardner-Webb University to play Quarterback for the Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The college years were fantastic, or as Michael says, “Those years went by too fast, but wouldn’t trade them for the world.” Both the football career and academics were above par. After finishing his career on the grid-iron Michael earned a National All-Stars selection. Having dreamed of playing professional football since the first day he stepped foot on a field at age 6, this was a dream Michael would chase relentlessly.

My senior year was in 1999. I was selected for this all-star game/ professional football combined workout in January 2000, the game wasn’t until April. So, on game day I measured at 5’ 11” 210 lbs. 8.0% body fat, ran a 4.54 40-yard dash with a 38-inch vertical leap, easily in the best shape of my life. The experience was great because I was fortunate enough to match my skills with the big division one boys along with smaller school divsion 2, 3, and NAIA competition. All of that was fun of showboating his skills, but little did Michael know, his life was soon to change and get really serious really fast.

In May of 2000, Michael’s hard work had come to a culmination When he walked across that stage and accepted his Communication Degree from Dr. Charles White of Gardner-Webb University. Now begins the job/career hunt. While chasing the career path of being an Emmy-Award broadcaster, the pro-football dream has not died in Michael’s heart. Several teams from various leagues continued to reach out to Michael from his All-Star game workout performance.

Michael wanted to exhaust all opportunities to play professional football, so he got a job delivering auto parts he had the previous summer. This job would allow him to work 25-35 hours/week, and workout and run like a football player.

All was going well just like he had planned, until that life-changing morning at 8:30am on September 9, 2000. On that morning it was severe weather of an unbelievable downpour of rain in the metro-Atlanta area. A call came into the store for some parts to be delivered and Michael drove off to deliver the parts just as he was supposed to do. In his return back to the store, the sky really opened up and visibility was not any more than 25 feet. Michael was stopped by a red light and was waiting patiently. A big BMW 500 series was traveling at an estimated speed between 70-100 mph in the pouring down rain. The driver lost control, and hydroplaned into Michael who was sitting still at a traffic light on Austell Road. Thank God, Michael was wearing a seat belt because witnesses reported the impact flipped Michael’s truck in the air backwards about five times with him landing upside down on top of a moving Honda Prelude. That impact crushed the Honda driver’s forearm, with him coming to a screeching halt and launching the truck off of his vehicle. It sent Michael’s truck flipping and skidding another 150 feet. It is a miracle that Michael’s truck was not struck by another vehicle and was within 4 miles of Wellstar Hospital.

Remember the physical shape and conditioning Michael was in. His body went into shock and it took 3 grown men to pry his hand off the steering wheel when the ambulance arrived.

Michael literally beat up and broke the steering wheel. With his face breaking the steering wheel; Michael’s crushed 14 bones in his face.

When his parents got the call of him being struck by another vehicle they also asked his mother, “Mrs. McKay, can you bring a picture of what Michael looked like because plastic surgery is likely.”

All of that does seem to be bad, but that is only the beginning. That accident put Michael into a coma for 12 days, and he was on a mechanical ventilation. His parents were told if you want to cut the ventilator

off we understand because there is about a 93% chance Michael won’t make it. His dad said, “No, I have a 23-year old son, 4 months graduated from college, and has professional football as a possibility.

To his and his families surprise, when he woke up from his coma, he was paralyzed on the left side of his body due to right side brain injuries.

Michael spent 6 months and 22 days in the Hospital from September 9, 2000 to March 31, 2001. Due to left side paralysis, Michael spent 5 months in a wheelchair.

Yes, this road continues on this long journey. Having suffered orbital fractures, titanium plates were placed in his eye sockets to promote properly healing. With having his jaw fractured and knocked out of line, he was required to wear braces for him to attain that game-changing and charming smile he has always had.

A team of doctors were required for the best results of this catastrophic recovery. With his brain being injured, Michael suffered major neurological damage, but from prayer, hard work, and 3 years of physical therapy Michael has few if any limitations.

The pro-football dream was over and done with because heaven knew that he couldn’t sustain any harder hits to the head and live to tell about it. Now Michael is all about using his writing skills and public speaking to promote positive thoughts and attitudes to the community.
