WATERFALLS
The Northwest Territories is home to several spectacular waterfalls, with the majority located along a section of Highway 1, known as the Waterfalls Route. The route is lined with many campgrounds and day-use areas that allow visitors to stop and take in the sights. Make Hay River your Hub of adventure to easily access the waterfalls along the route.
ALEXANDRA FALLS
The first set of falls you come across as you drive into the territory is Alexandra Falls, located at the entrance to Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park. This 114-foot cascade thunders down into a gorge and can be seen from a scenic overlook at the day-use area above. A short hiking trail links Alexandra Falls with Louise Falls and Escarpment Creek further down the river.
LOUISE FALLS
While only half the height of Alexandra Falls, the 114-foot Louise Falls are no less dramatic, as water cascades spectacularly into
the gorge on five sides. A unique 138- step spiral staircase leads to a viewpoint overlooking the threetiered Louise Falls. A campground with 28 powered campsites and full-service is located nearby.
ESCARPMENT CREEK
Located at the north end of Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park, this small group camping site features 12 powered sites, shelter, picnic tables and a playground. A small footbridge takes visitors across the small creek where you will find an attractive series of small waterfalls as the waters plummet into the nearby canyon.
MCNALLIE CREEK
Just a short drive from Enterprise on Highway 1, a trail leads you to a viewing platform and picnic area above these 56-foot falls.
LADY EVELYN FALLS
Drive an hour past Enterprise on Highway 1 to arrive at the Kakisa River. Head down the access road towards the Dene hamlet of Kakisa to come across Lady Evelyn Falls Territorial Park, where the falls form a
curtain of water as the river spills over a limestone escarpment. The nearby campsite offers 23 powered sites.
LITTLE BUFFALO RIVER FALLS
Take a drive down Highway 5 to Little Buffalo River Crossing Territorial Park, located just 50 kilometres north of Fort Smith. The park features a small set of falls that cascade into a pool of water and a day-use area containing a kitchen shelter, picnic tables, fire pits, and outhouses. There are six nonpowered campsites. A boat launch with access to Little Buffalo River is nearby, as is the NWT entrance to Wood Buffalo National Park.
SAMBAA DEH FALLS
Head about 240 kilometres west from Enterprise and you'll reach Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Park and its two spectacular waterfalls: Sambaa Deh Falls and Coral Falls. There is a new viewing platform overlooking the gorge. The park features 20non-powered campsites and a variety of hiking trails. Be sure to head a little further downstream for some excellent fishing.

WELCOME TO HAY RIVER
SOMETIMES KNOWN AS HAY RIVIERA
As a small town, Hay River boasts a bucket full of superlatives. Best golf course in the Northwest Territories. Largest port facility. Best beach anywhere north of the 60th parallel. Largest commercial fishery in the NWT. Leading agricultural area in the NWT. Highest building in the NWT (although it now shares that claim with one building in Yellowknife that is also 17 stories). Closest community to multiple waterfalls. Biggest Inukshuk in the NWT. Brightest coloured school in the far North. And the list goes on.
Although Hay River is duly proud of its superlatives, it does have much more. It is set on the banks of a scenic river that winds its way through the town, then divides into two distinct channels before it empties into Great Slave Lake. One channel is home to the commercial fishing fleet and many of the Metis and formerly Icelandic people who have harvested Great Slave Lake fish for decades. The other channel is the heart of the
NWT’s marine transportation along the Mackenzie River and along the Arctic coast.
Hay River is also home to two First Nations groups and the Metis Government Council who share their culture and traditions with fellow residents and visitors.
Hay River is a sports town and annually hosts the NWT’s largest track and field meet, as well as a winter pond hockey extravaganza, and dozens of smaller meets, races and tournaments. And its golf course is the envy of other NWT communities and certainly worth a visit even if you’re not a golfer.
Hay River is also strategically located near scenic waterfalls, smaller lakes and rivers and is less than a two-hour drive to the Alberta/NWT border.
But best of all are the welcoming people of Hay River. We’re proud of our community, and we want to help you experience sights and activities that are part of our daily life.
Enjoy your time in Hay River, and do come back.

An energetic town of approximately 3500 residents, surrounded by boreal forest, rivers and lakes, Hay River is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts through all seasons. Our extensive trail networks, spectacular waterfalls and sandy beaches provide the backdrop for many outdoor adventures.
As the second largest community in the NWT, we are justifiably proud of our recreation and cultural offerings, our diverse business environment and most importantly, our community spirit.
We encourage you to take the time to visit and enjoy our many services, amenities and recreational facilities we offer in our town. Our Visitor Information Centre operates year round and would be of great service to you, should you be on a holiday or are just curious about life in and around our community.
As a regional centre, our amenities are varied and provide all the services typically found in larger centers. Hay River is a great place to live, work, and play. WE’RE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK
HAY RIVER IS ABOUT 650 MILES (1,000 KM) NORTH OF EDMONTON, ABOUT A 12 HOUR DRIVE.
BY ROAD
Drivers to the NWT cross the Alberta/NWT border about 75 miles south of Hay River on NWT Highway 1. The all-season road in the NWT is part of the territories’ waterfall route, and offers stunning views of several waterfalls and deep limestone gorges, plus glimpses of the Hay River which runs almost parallel to the road. Watch for wildlife along the route, and don’t miss the sandhill cranes that can often be seen near the falls, or even along the banks of the road. Peace River and High Level in Alberta are popular stopping off points for those planning a leisurely drive to the Northwest Territories. The road to Hay River (highway 2) branches off Highway 1 at Enterprise and continues 25 miles to downtown Hay River. The speed limit on NWT highways outside communities is 90 km/hr.

BY RAIL
Although there is rail service into Hay River, it is for freight only. There is no passenger rail service into or within the Northwest Territories.
BY AIR
Hay River has a municipal airport with scheduled services to the community offered by Air Tindi, Canadian North and Northwestern Air Lease. Northwestern Air Lease provides scheduled flights between Hay River and Edmonton, with a stop at High Level, AB enroute. Canadian North provides direct service between Yellowknife and Hay River so visitors arriving on Westjet, Air Canada or Air North, can book a connecting flight to Hay River, once in Yellowknife. Air Tindi offers daily flights between Yellowknife and Hay River, and three times weekly flights from Hay River to Fort Simpson.
DRIVING TIPS
Before any road trip, make sure your vehicle is mechanically sound. Service centres are few and far between, and much of the highway goes through isolated areas. Some pointers to keep your journey hassle-free:
• Keep your fuel tank as full as possible.
• Carry a good spare tire and car jack, first aid kit, tow rope, flares, axe, knife, matches, and candles.
• Pack extra food and water, and extra windshield washer fluid in the summer—the bugs will make a mess! Don't forget bug spray either.
• If you're driving in the winter, carry extra warm clothes and a sleeping bag for each person in the vehicle.
• Drive with caution if you encounter wood bison. They may seem docile but will charge vehicles if aggravated. If you see them on the road, stop and wait for them to pass. And lastly, avoid driving at night, as bison are almost impossible to spot in the dark.

IT STARTED WITH FISH
AND TODAY FISHING CONTINUES, JOINED BY TRANSPORTATION, AGRICULTURE, GOVERNMENT AND TOURISM.
Hay River’s prime location at the mouth of the Hay River where it empties into Great Slave Lake has always meant an abundance of fine fish. The fish attracted the Slavey Dene to set up fish camps at this location hundreds of years ago. Today, fish (commercial fishing and sport fishing ) continue to anchor the town’s economy, but transportation, tourism, government, small businesses and agriculture have joined the local fishing industry.
The first permanent building, a Hudson’s Bay Company post was constructed on the east side of the Hay River in 1868, followed in
1869 by a Roman Catholic Mission and later an Anglican mission in 1873. The community of Hay River began when Chief Chiatlo of the Slavey Dene made the northeast side of the Hay River bank a more permanent settlement in 1892, as it was (and still is) a great spot for fishing.
The RCMP opened a detachment in 1925 and later a hospital was established there. Hay River remained mainly a trading post until the US Corps of Engineers build an airstrip on Vale Island in 1942.
From there, the town soon expanded to include Vale Island
which was also used as a staging area for constructing an oil pipeline, called the Canol Road Project, during the second World War. By 1945, the federal and Alberta government signed an agreement to build an all-weather highway from Grimshaw, Alberta to Hay River, which they finished in 1948. That road, known as the Mackenzie Highway, is the main road to ship goods further north and it’s the reason Hay River is called “the Hub of the North.”
In 1964 Hay River’s economy was further stimulated by the completion of a CNR rail link , the Great Slave Railway between Hay River and Roma, Alberta. With road and rail links to Alberta, Hay River became the transportation hub of the Northwest Territories, supporting tug and barge transport of goods to communities along the Mackenzie River and along the Arctic Coast.
But during the 1960s, flooding forced residents to relocate from Vale Island to the mainland on the western bank of the river. Development sprouted up around this new town located on higher ground. However, there are still houses located on the island and the area is now known as Old Town.
Hay River received official town status in 1963 and oil exploration led to economic growth in the 1970s. By the end of the decade, agriculture emerged because of a land freeze that the federal government lifted on 3,200 acres in the Hay River valley, creating further development. As more visitors stopped by, the Hay River Visitor Information Centre opened in 1984 and Old Town’s Hay River Heritage Centre opened in 2000, elevating the town’s status as a hub not just for transportation, but for industry and culture.

WHERE CULTURE LIVES
HAY RIVER HAS A RICH SOUTH SLAVEY DENE AND MÉTIS HERITAGE.
K’ATL’ODEECHE FIRST NATION RESERVE (HAY RIVER RESERVE)
The Dene Village across the river from Hay River is in the heart of traditional Slavey lands. In 1974 under Treaty 8, in an effort to protect their traditional lifestyle and lands, the residents requested the creation of a reserve, the only one in the NWT. Today the K’atl’odeeche First Nation is a thriving community of some 300 permanent residents. Just off Highway 5, on the road to the reserve there are interpretive displays of South Slavey Dene culture and history. Through the year there are often dances, storytelling sessions and other cultural events happening.
In addition to the K’atl’odeeche (pronounced “hat-low day-chey”) First Nation, Hay River is also home
to the West Point First Nation and a rich Métis community. The West Point First Nation is situated within the town of Hay River and many members continue to be fishers and land users mainly in the west channel area of Hay River. The West Point First Nation were formerly members of other First Nations but were not living near the First Nation where they had membership. They eventually came together and West Point First Nation was recognized as a distinct First Nation in 1993. For more information on the Hay River Metis community visit: nwtmetis.ca/ communities/hay-river/
YAMOZHA KUE (DENE CULTURAL INSTITUTE)
Located in a log and stone building in the K’atl’odeeche Reserve, the
Yomozha Kue Society (formerly Dene Cultural Institute) offers stories and exhibits that share Dene history, heritage and traditions with locals and visitors. The society’s work follows the direction received in 1986, where delegates to a cultural conference decided that a cultural organization was necessary for the Dene.
SOARING EAGLE FRIENDSHIP CENTRE
At the Soaring Eagle Friendship Centre, anyone can visit to learn about Indigenous traditions and history. As a non-profit organization and cultural meeting place, the centre welcomes people to attend a drum dance, view local arts and crafts and join in on a game of bingo. It also hosts “The Biggest Fiddling and Jigging Championship North of 60” every fall.

MADE BY HAND AND HEART
EACH PIECE PORTRAYS THE RUGGED NATURAL BEAUTY OF THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES.
From colourful beaded earrings to intricately patterned birchbark baskets, the NWT’s diverse collection of arts and crafts reflect its history and culture. Using natural materials and traditions that are centuries old, Hay River artists put endless hours and skill into every creation, offering unique and beautiful pieces. If you’re looking for a souvenir from the North, here are a few examples of the type of crafts you’ll find in and around Hay River.
TUFTING
Métis woman Boniface Lafferty introduced tufting to Fort Simpson around the time of World War I, after seeing a nun do “punchwork” with wool. Tufting, however, generally uses moose hairs, which are plucked from the hide by hand during the tanning process. The hair is then sorted, washed and dyed. When bundles of it are gathered and sewn around the backing material, it causes the fur to stand up in a tuft. You’ll often see tufting
decorating moose hide clothing, earrings or used to create images in a frame.
BIRCHBARK BASKETS & QUILLWORK
It’s no wonder people decorate their homes with birchbark baskets upon seeing its delicate design and imagery of flowers, birds and berries etched onto the bark.
Traditionally, people used baskets for everything from carrying water or tools and even cooked
14 HAY RIVER VISITORS GUIDE 2023
DESTINATION CANADA/NWTT PHOTO NORTHERN ARTS AND CRAFTS
with them. Because of the bark’s natural waxes, these baskets were waterproof and resistant to rot, making them last a lifetime.
What makes the baskets even more beautiful is the dedication toward creating each one, from peeling bark from the trees in late spring or summer and then sewing them together using spruce roots. Baskets are often decorated with quillwork which requires harvesting quills from porcupines, cleaning and dyeing them and then softening the quills so they can be flattened into delicate patterns.
TANNING & BEADWORK
It’s difficult not to be impressed by the labour-intensive work of traditional tanning. Over two weeks, locals will soak, scrape, dry and smoke a moose or caribou hide to soften it and make it pliable for making clothes. Once that part has been completed, hide clothing can be decorated with glass beadwork or porcupine quills
to make geometric patterns and floral designs.
WHERE TO SEE AND BUY NWT ART
In Hay River, you can find traditional art proudly displayed in numerous spots around town. Look for displays at the Recreation Centre, Ptarmigan Inn, Hay River Airport and K’atl’odeeche First Nation Band Office. At the Hay River Visitor Centre, Cariboodles Gift's N' Goodies, The Soaring Eagle Bear Store and Rings IDA you can buy authentic pieces of local art. Make sure to look for the NWT Arts logo, which proves the piece is an authentic NWT creation.

OR WANDER THROUGH THE TOWN AND MAKE YOUR OWN LIST
On a warm sunny day, there’s nothing better than taking a stroll outside, browsing the tables of local art, fresh-caught fish and market garden produce. If you’re in Hay River, it’s a must. From the Fisherman’s Wharf Market to the Hay River Golf Course, here are some must-see spots to find in the community.
FISHERMAN’S WHARF MARKET
The weekly market takes place every Saturday in the summer from 10 am to 2 pm. Here, you can watch local commercial fishermen come to port with their latest catches or get to know local artisans and see what is up for offer.
Just remember not to drool over the fish & chips, Bannock tacos and other delicious treats you’ll find with the market’s vendors.
ROTARY NATURE TRAIL
Winding along the riverbank and offering glimpses of foxes, rabbits, squirrels, eagles and more, it’s difficult to believe you’re in the heart of a busy community. The trail eventually connects to the Ravine Trail, which is used by nearby schools for nature studies.
HAY RIVER GOLF COURSE
The manicured nine-hole course brings in visitors from around the territory as it curves around the Hay River and offers a driving
range, walking trails and a log clubhouse to relax in. For those that eat, sleep and breathe golf, there are 10 convenient powered camp stalls c/w fire-pit and pump out access, located at the golf course. Take advantage of these services and play until the wee hours of the night or wake up early and hit the links.
GREAT SLAVE LAKE BEACH
This vast, sandy beach stretches along the shore of Vale Island, between the East and West Channels of the Hay River. Swim here during the day, and stroll the driftwood strewn beaches in the evening. Camping available nearby.

It’s all outdoors in late March and teams come to participate in games played on natural ice with some relaxation of the rules (where are those bluelines?) and only snowbanks dividing the rinks. Each year teams come from outside Hay River to join the locals in this winter celebration.
HAY RIVER BREAKUP
In early May the Hay River shows its power in a dramatic and
sometimes destructive breakup. Starting well above the falls, the force of the river carries truck-sized ice blocks along its curving route – creating a cacophony of deep sounds, as the ice crashes in the river, or is thrown up against trees high on the river banks. In the past 100 years, the river breakup has caused severe damage to buildings or equipment that has got in its way. Stories of floods are told by the upended trees seen along the river’s banks and in preserved clippings that explain the havoc caused during severe breakups. Locals and visitors have lined up along high ground above the river to watch this amazing force of nature.

Come across one of these animals at the right time and you could get the photo of a lifetime.
Early morning and late evening are the best times to get the perfect shot, and being quiet and waiting patiently may reward you. As always, practice safe travelling in bear country, and never approach or bait a predator. Hay River boasts beautiful landscapes that are picture perfect for aspiring shutterbugs. Sunset-lit lakes, roaring waterfalls,
and anglers bringing in their catches are just a few of the sights you can capture with your camera.
For avid bird or flower photographers, the town can give you that perfect shot of a fireweed blossom or gulls floating on the wind. Head down to the lagoon and click a few shots of birds resting during migrations or pull out your macro lens and take a photo of the many flowers found all over town.

THE CURTAIN RISES
AND YOUR FRONT ROW SEAT AWAITS ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF GREAT SLAVE LAKE.
It’s a common phrase to hear in the Northwest Territories, “the Lights are out!” For an average of 240 days a year, visitors and locals alike can get some of the best views in the world of the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights are
best seen on cloudless nights from mid-November to early April.
During that time, you’ll catch views of bands of green, pink, purple, red and white dancing in the sky.
But why is the NWT the best place to see such magic? The subarctic
is often blessed with crystal clear nights, low humidity and is in the perfect spot beneath the “Aurora oval.” Here, the lights are brighter and last longer than they do in many other places around the globe.

AURORA PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Capturing photos of the Aurora can be tricky, but there are some tips to getting the perfect shot.
1. CAPTURE THE DANCE
To capture as much of the dancing light as you can, you’ll need to ensure there is a long exposure of three to 10 seconds.
2. GET STEADY
Use a tripod and a remote trigger or the camera’s timer when taking shots so you don’t touch the camera and cause it to jitter while taking a snap.
3. EXPERIMENT
The “Auto” section on your camera won’t help in this situation, so choose manual instead.
4. STAY WARM
The best lights happen when the temperatures drop (-20° to -40°C) so bundle up and wear layers.
5. EXPLORE
Although you can see the lights in town, the views will be even better away from city lights. Luckily, there are many beautiful spots around Hay River to view the Aurora, so explore and remember to take plenty of memory cards (or film) for your camera. For more information about the aurora borealis, or to check the aurora forecast in your area for the best time to go out, visit: www.astronomynorth.com

With Hay River’s long history of commercial fishing, it’s no surprise that fishing remains a popular local pastime. At its peak, the town’s fishing industry supported 10 different fishing companies and more than 600 fishermen in the 1940s. While the boom slowed during the 1960s, the demand for Great Slave Lake fish increased and a new commerical fish plant is currently being constructed. The big lake also attracts sports fishers to its rich resources.

NORTHERN FISH
LAKE WHITEFISH
These fish have small delicate mouths so hook gently. They’re good fighters and can be taken on a small fly, spinner or gold small spoon.
LAKE TROUT
Lake trout are the largest of the trout family and can reach up to 32 kilograms. To hook one, you can spin cast, troll or fly fish. The most popular lures for lake trout are spoons or ciscoes. In mid-summer you’ll want to fish deep.
NORTHERN PIKE OR JACKFISH
Although they can be found year-
round, the best time to hook one is in the early summer. Jackfish like spoons, bucktails and jerk baits. But be careful—they have sharp teeth!
PICKEREL OR WALLEYE
Cast a line in the Hay River, at one of our secret fishing holes that are abundant in Pickerel/Walleye! Using a bright colored jig, a spinner or a spoon you will be sure to catch dinner!
ARCTIC GRAYLING
Try micro spinners for these small fish. You’ll find the best grayling fishing is in late April or May.
BEAR SAFETY
Bears can be found throughout the Northwest Territories and can be dangerous. Remember that you’re in their territory and you should treat them with respect.
When fishing, be cautious near streams or lakes. Bears frequent those areas Clean fish and dispose of guts away from your camping area. And when camping, don’t wear clothes to bed that smell like fish.
If you encounter a bear, remember the 3 S’s: Stop. Stand still. Stay calm. Do not run. Leave the bear an open avenue of escape. If you spot a bear from a distance, make your presence known by speaking in low tones and slowly waving your arms. Do not shout or make sudden movements. Keep an eye on the bear, stay downwind and avoid direct eye contact, then back away slowly or make a wide detour.

BIG RIVER COUNTRY
AND BESIDE THE WORLD’S NINTH LARGEST LAKE.
Wherever you go in Hay River, chances are you’re not far from a body of water—whether it’s the river winding through town, a lake abundant with fish or a flowing waterfall. Here’s where you can go to admire the views and maybe get in a swim.
THE HAY RIVER
The river that gives the town its name is a leading attraction, known for its deep canyons, stun -
ning waterfalls and topnotch fishing.
GREAT SLAVE LAKE
Bringing people from around the world to its shores, this is North America’s deepest lake. Its waters are swarming with monster Lake Trout, Pike and Whitefish, so bring your fishing rod.
MACKENZIE RIVER
You can also head out on a half-day
or day-long outing to the nearby headwaters of the Mackenzie River, where there’s—you guessed it—more fishing.
LITTLE BUFFALO RIVER
Just minutes away from Great Slave Lake is Little Buffalo River, where one can stop for fishing and boating. Plus, just on its shores is a territorial park with available campsites.
