A Bright Beginning

Excitement Builds for the New Preschool Year

We are gearing up for another exciting and fruitful year of school at Haymount United Methodist Church Preschool! We would like to remind our congregation that there are still a few openings in all of our class levels! We would love to have the opportunity to teach and minister to your little one. For information on registration, a tentative 2025-2026 calendar, and all pertinent registration forms, you can visit the Preschool page on our church webpage!

We are also still in need of substitute teachers for our 2025-2026 school year. We offer competitive pay and flexible hours that allow our substitute teachers to work either as much or as little as they would like throughout the year. If you are interested in applying, please contact our preschool director Laurie Ashley at (910) 484- 5646 or HUMCpreschool@haymountumc.com

We ask that all of our congregation take time to pray for our staff and our students for this coming school year. The magnitude of our responsibility to be shining examples to these children, and to teach them about God’s love is never lost on us. Thank you Haymount UMC for all you do to make this ministry possible!

Remembering Bea Mathis

Celebrating the Life of a Beloved Friend

On Sunday, June 8 the Barrington Sunday School Class met, along with Bea’s family, to celebrate and remember the life of their great friend. The group had lunch while Wes Lockfaw played the piano, and shared fond memories of their time with Bea. The Barrington Bible class has been a part of Haymount UMC since it’s first class held in August of 1946, and is a shining example as to how creating a community centered around The Lord, can bless your life immeasurably.

Trunk or Treat Save the Date

Two years ago, Haymount United Methodist Church launched Music for a Great Space, a concert series designed to share exceptional music with our church and community. Since then, we ’ ve hosted thirteen concerts featuring diverse and talented artists, and attendance has grown by 30% a testament to how powerfully God is working through this ministry. These concerts aren’t just performances - they’re doorways into our faith community where new relationships are being formed leading some to take the next steps in their spiritual journey all beginning with music

As we look to our third season, we hope to offer six concerts including a performance by Olivier Latry from The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France but we need your help to make it happen. While some events receive church funding, Music for a Great Space depends on the generosity of supporters like you. Music inspires, comforts, and brings people together. It’s a gift we’re called to share. Will you partner with s to contin e this meaningf l work? If yo wo ld like more information on how yo

When a family faces the profound challenge of loss, it can truly feel like an avalanche of emotions crashing down overwhelming grief, unexpected shock, and a whirlwind of logistics that must be tackled in a short timeframe Amidst the heartache, families find themselves juggling funeral arrangements, burial details, and coordinating schedules with loved ones, all while navigating their own feelings of sorrow It’s a lot to bear, and at times it can feel all-consuming

In moments of loss and sorrow, we are beautifully reminded of God's call for us to support one another as a community, sharing both our joys and our burdens At Haymount United Methodist Church, our dedicated Congregational Care team exemplifies this spirit, providing compassionate support to our members during their most challenging times As part of our commitment to care, we have established three thoughtful funeral meal teams that offer nourishing meals to families grieving the loss of a loved one. These meals can be enjoyed at a time that suits the family best, whether in our welcoming New Life Center or in the comfort of their own homes. This flexibility allows families to focus on what truly matters coming together to heal and support one another without the added stress of meal preparation.

If you would like to become a part of one of our Funeral Meal Teams, or would like to learn more about how our Congregational Care Team cares for the members of Haymount UMC, contact Katherine Pugh at (910) 797-9278.

The Blessing

of The Pets Honoring All of God’s Creations

Save the date for our upcoming Blessing of The Pets service! We are welcoming dogs, cats, and other animals to join us on our front lawn, where we will be blessing animals from all around our community. Pets will be welcomed in shifts, offering “drive through” options to pets who cannot be leashed. We also invite members of the community to bring a photo, ashes, leash, or collar for a blessing for an animal that has passed There are more details to come about this exciting community event! We hope to see you and your beloved animals there!

Finance Update

From your Finance Committee

Lots of exciting things are happening in the life of Haymount. We are grateful for your presence that makes planning activities (like WEF, Vacation Bible School, our 3rd Music for Great Spaces, and a return mission trip to El Salvador) more fun In finance,we want you to know how impactful your giving is to these kinds of activities and the general operations of the church In terms of the general operating budget, we're excited to be sitting with a $67k surplus year-to-date That being said- we still need your pledged dollars, as much ofthe operations budget will be spent in the final half of the year. Several recent financial highlights include:

• This month we took the first $50k draw from our $325k building improvement loan to initiate the siding and window replacement on the Education Building While no one is particularly excited about a loan in general, the win is that it's at a 3% rate over a 15 year-term. That makes the monthly payment $2,244.39 which in the big picture of church expenses is very doable. This loan makes it possible to complete several large scale projects that would otherwise be tough to budget. In addition to siding and windows, we believe a portion of this loan will go toward repairing the walls inside the sanctuary now that the leaks are repaired as well as bringing components in our NLC HVAC system up-to-date (so we can stop hunting down obsolete parts when repairs are needed). Ultimately, these decisions will be finalized by the Trustees. We're grateful for our trustees who are putting lots of time and energy into updating and beautifying our church home.

• Hopefully you have seen the many activities Rachel has planned for our children's ministries this year and the ministries in which our youth are engaged Your gifts do so much more than "keep the lights on and pay salaries"! There are several ways you (we) can contribute to the missions, ministries and preservation of our lovely facilities

• In our most recent finance meeting we also established a new line item so we can begin raising funds to replace the protective coverings over our sanctuary stained-glass. I personally can't wait to be able to see these beautiful works of art from the outside of the building again My mom said they were last replaced when she was on trustees- I think I might have been a little girl when she was on that committee when John Bergland was pastor If you would like to "sponsor a window" or part of one to help make these windows visible from the street again just let Nicole know While we're working on obtaining an up-to-date quote, we believe it will cost around $2,500 each to replace the protective glass visible from the outside of the sanctuary.

If you have any questions about Haymount's finances or any of these updates- please reach out

Warmly-

Haymount’s Facilities Endowment Funds are Key!

From your HUMC Endowments Committee

Due to the recent needs for facility repairs and updates at Haymount, the Endowment Committee decided it’s a good time to share the history of our three endowment funds for facilities. A percentage of the annual income from these invested funds is passed to HUMC to assist with this work. We shared the Ruth Jones Facilities Endowment history in the previous newsletter. Now we are sharing the history of the Wesley Heights Endowment and the Fred and Rennie Beyer Endowment for Piano Maintenance

The History of Wesley Heights Endowment Fund by Lynda Clark: At a joint Charge Conference on June 16, 2021, motions from Wesley Heights United Methodist Church and Haymount United Methodist Church were made and unanimously approved to effect a merger of the two church congregations On July 1, 2021, the two congregations officially became one, operating under the Haymount United Church name For 75 years (1946-2021), Wesley Heights had significant ministries within the Fayetteville area and connections with HUMC There was one surviving charcter member at the time of the merger Several former Wesley Heights members had previously transferred to HUMC because of marriage or other life changes. Others were connected through ministry services and family members.

The WHUMC leadership was adamant that the most important thing was becoming “Haymounters” and serving in any way they could. That service could, they hoped, help retire Haymount’s debt. Haymount leadership agreed that upon sale of the newly aquired Wesley Heights property, all but $100,000 of the proceeds would be applied to the current debt. Haymount was so grateful (and still is) that God had led these faithful servants to continue ministry and mission by becoming a part of the Haymount family. The emphasis thos Wesley Heights members placed on preserving God’s house was a resounding directive to creat the Wesley Heights Endowment Fund for facilities. The earning from these funds (the initial $100,000 and subsequent gifts) will help maintain our facilities into the future The annual earnings are directed to the Trustees for determining immediate use needs

The History of Fred and Rennie Byer Endowment for Piano Maintenance by Lynda Clark: Long time HUMC members Fred and Rennie Beyer were devoted to the church, especially the music ministries Fred sang in the choir, and the couple’s children were active in both youth ministries and choir Rennie was a superb pianist Her “dual piano” performances with Judy Aycock and Tony Argo are memorable blessings

The Beyers helped secure the beautiful Steinway Model C Piano that is in our sanctuary Understanding the need and wanting provision for the maintenance and upkeep of that instrument, the family created the Fred and Rennie Byer Endowment for Piano Maintenance, to help cover those costs going forward. Appreciating all the musical endeavors and programs at HUMC, the family included for the revenue generated by the fund to include all pianos in our facilities. As of 2025, HUMC as 4 grand pianos and 6 upright pianos. Each year the earnings from this endowment are directed to the Music Ministry. The piano tunings and maintenance are scheduled as needs are identified.

To assist with our facilities upkeep, donations of any amount can be made at any time to our three endowments for facilities. Simply see Nicole in our business office.

Stronger Together

Celebrating the Joyful Union of Our Congregations

Lyon Memorial United Methodist Church

On October 2, 1955, the first service of the Eutaw Village Methodist Church was held in a dwelling on Fort Bragg Road made available to the church by Mrs. Florence L. Rogers. The church was formally organized on November 20, 1955, with 13 members. On December 10, 1955, at a cost of $10,000, the permanent site of the church, on the corner of Rogers Drive and Stamper Road, was purchased by the North Carolina Conference Board of Missions. Charter Sunday was held on June 24, 1956, with 47 members receiving charter membership certificates. On July 13, 1956, the name of the church was officially changed to Lyon Memorial Methodist Church The privilege of naming the church was given to Mrs Rogers, who chose to name the church in memory of her parents, the late Mr and Mrs Henry Lewis Lyon

A gift of $1,000 from the Conference Board of Missions in August 1956 made it possible for the church to purchase a six-room parsonage at 1078 Stamper Road at a cost of $15,000 By July of 1962, church membership was 248 In June of 1976, the North Carolina Conference voted to close Lyon Memorial and to transfer its members to Haymount United Methodist Church, a gifted Haymount UMC the former Lyon Memorial UMC parsonage on Stamper Road.

Christ United Methodist Church

Christ Church began on October 25,1953 as the Raeford Road Mission, an outpost Sunday School, sponsored by Hay Street Methodist Church Some dozen or so leaders from Hay Street Church came out to a developing area on Raeford Road at various times to teach, organize classes and visit local individuals. Most of this initial effort was done under the direction of the Reverend Robert Regan, Hay Street associate pastor. The people met on Sunday in a house offered for Sunday school use by Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Tally, Sr. Beginning in August of 1954, services also included preaching On October 31,1954, the Reverend R S Barefield was appointed as the first pastor and Christ Methodist Church was chartered on February 13,1955, with 45 members Charter membership remained open for another year until the first building was officially opened for use. Land for the church building was given by the same Tally family and ground was broken on June 26,1955. The first parsonage was purchased at 481 McBain Drive and on August 23,1956.

By 1963, church membership was over 500 with more than 200 enrolled in Sunday School. The people present at a church conference on March 27, 1966 voted unanimously to build a brick colonial-style sanctuary. In 1972, George and Jane Fincher gave a carillon with the speaker installed in the steeple as a memorial to their parents In 2019, the congregation, which was about 130 members with active attendance of about 45, was approached by a real estate developer seeking to purchase the church property for commercial development At the same time, the NC DOT approached Christ Church about a median being added to Raeford Road, which would result in the widening of the road and the new roadway coming very close to the front door of the church The congregation decided to explore the possibility of merging with another United Methodist Church and selling the Christ Church property so that the proceeds from the sale would continue to find United Methodist ministry in the Fayetteville area. The congregation voted unanimously to merge with Haymount United Methodist Church, on the condition that their pastor be brough onto the staff at Haymount. The joint charge conference held between Christ and Haymount approved the merger on August 9, 2019, and Christ Church and Haymount UMC became a single congregation. Proceeds from the sale of the Christ Church properties were used to refurbish the Haymount UMC organ and to establish a permanent endowment fund at Haymount UMC, the Christ Church Endowment

Wesley Heights United Methodist Church

In the year 1946 several people in the community decided that a Methodist Church was needed in a growing area of Fayetteville on Ramsey Street Meetings were held in the home of Marvin and Bessie Riddle and others who were interested, including Fleet & Lennie Hall and Murray & Edna Riddle Hall A committee was appointed to find a location and a site was chosen at the intersection of Trinity Street and Quincy Drive After the location was approved by the Church Extension Board, three lots were purchased at a cost of $1,000 00 The first meetings were held under the pines where the church now stands An improvised wooden platform was erected and on September 29, 1946, the church was organized. A piano was moved by truck every Sunday the home of Marvin and Bessie Riddle to the wooden platform so church services could be held. The Hut, costing approximately $4,500.00, replaced the wooden platform in December of 1946. The question of the name of the church was discussed and Rev. T. J. Whitehead suggested that it be named Wesley Heights Methodist Church. There has been a growth from a membership of thirteen at the organizational meeting in 1946 to 451 in 1966. Wesley Heights was the first church in the Fayetteville District to be assigned a female pastor, Rev Nancy Best In June of 1992, the Rev Dr Tryon Lancaster was assigned to serve as the pastor of Wesley Heights, a role that he held for almost 22 years Upon his retirement, a few other part-time pastors served Wesley Heights During the COVID pandemic, Wesley Heights held online services led by Pastor Sean Hardy and later Pastor Lisa Craver

Children’s Library Coming to HUMC Coming this Fall

Thanks to the help of a very generous donor, Haymount UMC is excited to announce that we will soon begin work on the Ann McAlister Children’s Library. This library will be located where the old building connects with the educational building, and will be the home to a plethora of children’s literature for children to sit and enjoy! More details of this project will be announced as it progresses. We are excited to offer this new addition to our HUMC Preschool kids this fall!

Upcoming El Salvador Mission Trip

Submitted by Dr. Wes Jones

From July 19-26 we will be based in Ahuachapan, northern El Salvador population of 70,000. Our team will be supervised by Brian Dubberly, a full-time NC UMC Volunteers in Mission coordinator (for about 15 years), wife is Ellyn Dubberly UMC GBGM missionary with whom HUMC has a covenant relationship. Our construction project has yet to be determined. There are typically 20-30 VIM mission teams annually in Ahuachapan and whatever project that is in progress or given priority we will assist. Last year we worked closely with 4 native El Salvadorans construction workers, one of whom is their foreman. Construction costs this year for our team is $5,500 which includes purchase of materials and also salary support for the El Salvadoran workers who work full time for the Methodist church.

Possible projects include construction/repair of the 500 student Methodist school, construction of the new Methodist university which is contiguous and or construction/repair of homes of the indigent About $3000 for this mission trip has been provided from the spring garage sale approved by the Missions committee

In addition to our construction work, Dr Poulos will work as a general practitioner at the surrounding barrios outside Ahuachapan where people are too poor to live in the city They are the least of the least often without running water or few means of financial support

A missionary commented once that mission work is like the military For every person in the field there are 20-50 people who provide their support

We ask that HUMC pray for us and that the Lord’s Will be done through us while in Ahuachapan. Any financial assistance from HUMC would also be appreciated as several team members will receive partial scholarship. “Some send and others are sent.” You can still be part of our team while staying in Fayetteville. GodSpeed!

MERCI Center Visit Packing School Kits for Children in Need

On April 27, a group from Haymount UMC visited the MERCI center in Goldsboro, NC This group was tasked with helping assemble School Kits, that the MERCI center would then distribute to children in need For weeks leading up to the visit, we asked our Haymount congregation to donate the school supplies necessary to assemble these kits, and per usual, we were blown away by our church’s generosity! These donations allowed our volunteer group to pack a plethora of school kits, and make a huge impact in neighboring communities

We are planning on taking another visit to the MERCI center in the fall of 2025. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining us, please contact Laurie Doherty to let her know you would like to know more about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

While the needs of the MERCI center are ever evolving, School Kits are a project that is continuously worked on. With the summer coming to a close, and families preparing to head back to school, school supplies are on sale! Consider purchasing school supplies to donate to the MERCI Center, specifically loose-leaf notebook paper and single subject spiral notebooks To learn more about how you can help the MERCI center, or ways to volunteer, contact Laurie Doherty at (910) 988-4265

Please plan to join us in the New Life Center at noon for lunch and bingo! Only one request, please call or text Katherine Pugh at 910-7979278 to let her know that you are planning on attending As always, thank you to the Senior Adult Endowment Funds for making this possible. We hope to see you there!

Men’s Basketball Group

Haymount UMC is starting a Men’s Basketball Group! Are you interested in playing a game of pick-up basketball while also engaging in meaningful fellowship? Join us on Sunday evenings! This group is open to ages 14 and up! If you are interested in joining, contact Colin Bunker at 336-425-4901

portion of our NLC Roof stands as a testament to our commitment to maintaining our facilities for the benefit of our community. Perhaps you ' ve noticed our vibrant new electronic sign at the front of the church, a beacon of connection that invites deeper engagement with our community. Additionally, we are in the final stages of upgrading our Fire Alarm System, transitioning from Simplex to the more advanced Gill Security system, reinforcing our unwavering commitment to safety.

As we embarked on this new year, the Trustees Committee took a thoughtful and comprehensive look at the needs of our beloved Haymount United Methodist Church Recognizing the vital importance of preserving the integrity of the building that holds a special place in our hearts, we set out to address necessary upgrades that would ensure its longevity for generations to come With determination and foresight, our church sought support from the NC UMC Board of Missions and successfully secured a $325,000 loan at a favorable 3% interest rate, which will significantly aid us in implementing these essential enhancements. Thanks to this generous financial backing, we are thrilled to announce the commencement of an exciting project that includes the installation of new windows and siding transforming our church. We are committed to completing this project in time for the upcoming HUMC Preschool school year, marking a significant investment in our church’s future and enhancing the welcoming atmosphere that we cherish Together, as a community united in purpose and spirit, we are taking bold steps forward, ensuring that Haymount United Methodist Church continues to thrive as a beacon of hope, love, and fellowship for all who enter its doors

As we look towards the future, our committee is excited to focus on the crucial task of repairing our HVAC system for the remainder of 2025. In addition to our HVAC work, we will be installing three new handicap entrances to our building. One of these entrances will be in our sanctuary, the second will be in our fellowship hall, and the third will be in our New Life Center. These new entrances were made possible by generous donors from within our congregation. We are immensely grateful for the generosity that our faithful congregation has shown in the past, which truly embodies the warmth and community spirit of Haymount United Methodist Church We invite you to consider contributing to our Building Fund, an opportunity to invest in our church's future and enhance the worship experience for families and individuals alike Remember, every contribution, big or small, has a collective impact that strengthens our beloved community If you have any questions or would like more information on how you can assist, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Nicole in our Church Office. Together, we can ensure that our church

remains a welcoming space for all!

Stephen Minister Spotlight

I am a native of North Carolina. I grew up in the small community of Eagle Rock and the big city of Raleigh. I attended Peace College, where I studied accounting and early childhood education. I was married for over forty years to my husband, David, that I met on my first job in the accounting department of Raleigh Federal Savings and Loan. I have two daughters, five grandchildren, and two dogs. I have always been a caregiver, so Stephen Ministry training seemed like a good way to learn how to give better care. Then I needed a caregiver...being able to speak your feelings with no judgment given, talk about your pain without feeling you are burdening your friends or loved ones, and the confidentiality of the relationship were invaluable, I am honored to be a Stephen Minister and am grateful to be able to give back to others.
