SITE SPECIFIC INTERVENTION • SEPTEMBER 1, 2021

"The Weight of the World"

This project tasked students with creating an installation that would meaningfully fill their selected site on the Jefferson campus. Using limited materials, "togetherness" had to be represented.

We aimed to create a piece that spoke about the current state of the world. With bad news circulating constantly, we wanted to give people a way to take some weight off of their chests. The twine that connects the tube to the tree represents the fact that together, we are stronger and can help one another overcome difficult times.

TOPOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATIONS • SEPTEMBER 20, 2021

Hand Soap Bottle

An in-depth look of an object, such as a hand soap bottle, was taken and recreated using horizontal, vertical, and egg-crate models from cardboard. A non-cardboard 'skin' model was created as the fourth model in the set. In layering 2-D layers of cardboard to create the 3-D models, the relationship between 2-D and 3-D became more prominent.

A series of plans, sections, and elevations that served as introductions to architectural drawings.

CREATING COLOR, PATTERN, AND TEXTURE • OCTOBER 4, 2021

The Butterfly Effect The object of this project was to show how color, pattern, and texture interact with and affect one another.

After carving a stamp, three different patterns were to be made. A three-color palette was applied to a color wheel, a plaid, and one of these patterns. A folded 6x6 piece of paper had the palette applied to it to create depth and highlights in areas where there weren't any already.

VISUAL HIERARCHY • OCTOBER 25, 2021

Black-WhiteYellow Similarly to the topological transformations project, the relationship and transition between 2-D and 3-D was reexamined. Anni Albers' textile Black-White-Yellow took on a 3-D 8x8x8 cube form in this project.

Diagramming was an important skill learned and executed to examine the layers of the textile. A 2-D model was created to show some of these layers: depth, flow, and hierarchy.

Black-WhiteYellow Students used their knowledge of the 2-D textile to form the 8x8x8 cube.

Painted foam core was used to recreate the hierarchy of colors in the original textile.

Some other main points featured were focal points and repetition.

Plan, elevation, and axonometric drawing skills were strengthened in this project as well.

BEND, CUT, FOLD • NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Sonata

Sonata by Marcel Duchamp was used to construct an abstracted bas relief, a piece where some aspects are slightly raised from the background.

The elements of balance, overlapping, hierarchy, implied lines, rhythm, and negative space were combined to create the finished product.

A section from the highcontrast photos was selected to become the basis for the wooden model.

BEND, CUT, FOLD • NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Sonata The selected high-contrast section from the bas relief transformed from a 2-D form to a 3-D plywood form.

The darkest areas became the highest points on the 3-D model, with the lightest areas being the base level. A tunnel section was carved out underneath to create space that would otherwise be unused.

MAKING SPACE • DECEMBER 7, 2021

Invisible City: Esmeralda

A basswood and plexiglass model was constructed on top of the plywood landscape to represent Italo Cavalo's Invisible City of Esmeralda. Students were instructed to explore the spatial complexities based on the description given.

Esmeralda is a city where a person living there their whole life would never take the same path twice. In the model, as one ages, they move through the space and discover new paths.

MAKING SPACE • DECEMBER 7, 2021

Invisible City: Esmeralda

Students had to complete a series of drawings, ranging from plans to perspectives to paragraphs, that were aimed at bettering their hand drafting skillset.

In using scale figures, students were to see how the individual interacts with a space and how a human scales in comparison to the architecture and landscape.

Diagrams were also used to see the parallels between the passage and the final model.

SIGNIFICANT ARTISTS • OCTOBER 31, 2021

Lucien Hervé PARTNERS: EUNIQUE COOPER AND NICK LASZLO

Each week, different groups of three students were tasked with creating presentations about certain artists or artistic groups underneath a broader category.

One week was significant photographers and my group was assigned Lucien Hervé, a Hungarian architectural photographer. In researching and preparing videos for the class, students learned about the life and legacy of artists and how their impact is felt in today's society.

CRAFTING CUBES AND CYLINDERS • AUGUST 25, 2021 - NOVEMBER 17, 2021

Cubes and Cylinders

Over the course of the semester, students had to create a series of platonic and exploratory cubes and cylinders. By documenting progress, improvements in joinery, craft, and drafting skills were able to be tracked.

The materials became more complex as the semester progressed, starting with paper and chipboard and ending with concrete, students were able to slowly build up their confidence in working with the new materials.

SEMESTER REFLECTION • DECEMBER 15, 2021

Semester Reflection

From this semester, I learned to take things one step at a time. Whether it be one project, one drawing, or even one stair of a model, I found it better to not stress myself over thinking about everything I have to get done at once. The picture to the right is from the second project, the topological transformations, when I was working on my skin model. I had started with floral wire, since I wanted to be able to capture the detail of my soap bottle, but I ultimately had to scrap my work and turn to wire mesh instead.

However, I kept this piece because I felt it represented how a lot of this semester went. It has some areas of complete disarray, and some of order. But, all these pieces came together to create a finished product that looked better than expected. Like this semester, I had many moments where I considered switching majors, and some where I felt like I knew exactly what I was doing.

Looking back at it all, it came together and seeing my improvement made all the rough patches worthwhile.
