DIAMOND SCHMITT ARCHITECTS:
Diamond Schmitt Architects is large architecture fi rm in Toronto. They work on a wide variety of projects including healthcare, performing arts centres, libraries, and university buildings. While at Diamond Schmitt , I worked on a renovati on for a university maker lab, a hockey arena competi ti on, and a master plan for Guelph University. I organized the fi le structure for the maker lab and created all design development drawings for the project. When working on the competi ti on I drew and helped design the facades. The fi nal project was the university master plan where I put together a series of diagrams outlining existi ng systems and proposing sites for development. I also began working on a model for the master plan using 3-D printi ng for the buildings, and laser cutti ng for the curbs.

JOHN WILLMOTT ARCHITECT: HIDDEN HOUSE
Accessory Dwelling Unit
2023 - Present
Oakville, Canada
Craft: Vectorworks, SketchUp, Lumion
The Hidden House project is a transformation of an Oakville backyard into a discrete accessory dwelling unit. Concealed beneath the back patio, the unit maximizes the extensive sloping property, and is integrate with its surroundings.
Taking ownership from schematic design through to the end of the construction documents phase, I meticulously managed the project, collaborating seamlessly with mechanical and structural engineers, surveyors, and arborists. Independently assembling the construction document set, I maintained a collaborative review process with my supervisor to ensure the quality of the package. Opting for ICF construction due to the unique underground nature of the project, I thoroughly researched products and developed detailed wall sections.
Beyond the technical aspects, I also assumed the role of interior designer, overseeing the aesthetic aspects and maintaing constant communication with the client.

JOHN WILLMOTT ARCHITECT: PEC ESTATE
Lake Front Vacation Home
2022 - Present
Prince Edward County, Canada
Craft: Vectorworks, SketchUp, Lumion
At John Willmott Architect Inc. a prominent mid-sized residential firm in Oakville, I played a pivotal role in shaping the PEC Estate - a summer home for a local family.
Drawing inspiration from the region’s rural architecture and the influence of traditional architects like Robert A.M. Stern, out team crafted a transitional house with distinctive architectural elements. Notably, a doubleheight window at the stair running through the porch roof and an arched loggia connecting the main house to the guest house.
Managing the project from site analysis to design development, I collaborated closely with the principal architect, contributing significantly to the final design. I came up with design options, worked out proportions, modeled the project, created renderings, and actively participated in presenting the concept to the clients.

POST ARCHITECTURE: PRICEFIELD HOUSE
Heritage Semi-Detached Renovation
2019 - 2021
Toronto, Canada
Craft: SketchUp, Auto CAD, Excel
The Pricefield House project, a semi-detached Victorian residence in Forest Hill, Toronto, took inspiration from the client’s extensive collection of handcrafted furniture and art acquired from their stays around the world.
During the DD phase, I coordinated with the heritage department and produced zoning drawings, including the site plan and statistics. Collaborating with a colleague, I played a pivotal role in preparing the permit drawings, drawing wall construction details, generating window schedules, and coordinating with structural and mechanical engineers. After receiving the permit, I assumed the lead in developing the interior design set. Working closely with the clients, we experimented with various options during meetings, ensuring their vision came to life.
During construction, I actively communicated with the contractor, responded to RFI’s, addressed change orders, and conducted on-site reviews. This hands-on involvement during the construction phase allowed me to witness the project’s evolution first hand and gave me insight into the construction process.

POST ARCHITECTURE: FARM HOUSE
Georgina Valley Country Estate
2020 - 2021
Georgian Valley, Canada
Craft: SketchUp, Auto CAD, Enscape, Photoshop, InDesign
The farmhouse was the most extensive project at Post Architecture, which I had the pleasure of being involved in from the beginning stages of schematic design to the construction drawing phase.
Working closely with the Principal, I developed the schematic design based on the clients’ brief. The client’s wanted the estate to be inspired by the old world architecture of Europe and the rural architecture of Ontario. Our proposal features two intersecting wings, mirroring a farmhouse and a stable. The formers house bedrooms and a mudroom, while the latter comprised the main entry, kitchen, dining, and living room, opening onto a terrace with expansive views of the valley.
In the design development stage, I worked independently proposing options for materials, landscape, and interior elements, shaping the projects form and aesthetic. My responsibilities extended to crafting detailed millwork drawings, capturing the nuances embedded in the design model. This project was particularly satisfying to me as it seamlessly integrated old and new elements.

THESIS: A TOOL, A ROOM, A HOUSE, A VILLAGE:
Urban Cottages for Domestic Crafting
Masters 2017 - 2019
Supervisor: Donald McKay
Toronto, Canada
Craft: Woodworking, Watercolour, Rhino, Vray, Physical Modeling, 3D Printing, Photoshop, Illustrator
When we craft objects, we become absorbed in work, intimately involved with the physical piece. These things populate our homes, carrying our imprint. Whether making or using our handiwork, our crafts bring us joy. However, most of us no longer make things. At all scales of our world, everything is a commodity, from clothing and tableware to furniture and homes.
Imagine cottages organized close to each other on a laneway within Toronto, supporting a community focused on living more enriching lives through crafting. The typology of the cottage carries connotations of craft and self-sustainability. In such a village, people can escape the cycle of consumption and create objects they enjoy. People form stronger relationships with themselves, their families, and their neighbours in making them.

The House

Hanging Laundry in the Porte Cochère
Compositi onally, the house is a shell infi lled with open spaces connected to a bar of supporti ng rooms. The fi rst fl oor is primarily for work while the second fl oor is for leisure. The house is a simple wood frame platf orm constructi on with brick veneer.
The entry to the house is through a Port Cochère, which allows for greater inti macy. The structure of the side porch becomes gradually more dense from the front to the rear of the house.

The Workroom
The workroom is the central space of the Urban Cottage. Life in the cottage is spent here, working, dining, or hosting. The room is a simple open space located on the first floor, one metre below ground. At the front of the room is the sewing table which faces the lane. Different activities can be accommodated in the space, including floor work, diner parties, and presentations. On the right side is a built in storage wall. There are wooden gables spaced 80 cm apart where components of the same dimensions can be placed.
