There will be pre-concert talks prior to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s performances on 28 September, 7 March, 28 April and 8 June and also before the Russian State Symphony Orchestra on 11 October. Tickets are priced at £4.

For the first time the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing a series of Miniatures in the Studio, which will include recitals for strings, brass, clarinet and more. We are also delighted to welcome back Mark Bebbington for another wonderful piano recital.

Classical Season 2018/19

Pre-Concert Talks and Events To enhance your enjoyment The Hawth offers accessible, introductory 30 - 40 minute talks prior to Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Russian State Symphony Orchestra performances in the theatre. Concentrating on the works to be performed that evening, the talks by experienced music writers and lecturers, Terry Barfoot, Gwyn Parry-Jones, Tommy Pearson and Jonathan James will consider aspects of the music to be performed.

Beethoven Grieg Brahms

Leonore Overture No.3 Piano Concerto Symphony No.2

This majestic concert opens with Beethoven’s exhilarating Leonore Overture No.3. A favourite in the concert hall, this is arguably the best-loved of the four different overtures the composer wrote for his only opera.

With one of the most recognisable openings in all orchestral music, Grieg’s seminal Piano Concerto is the grand centrepiece of this programme. Its dramatic opening leads into rich, lyrical melodies and passages of show-stopping virtuosity, performed by renowned pianist Andrew Zolinsky.

Completing the concert is Brahms’ charming Symphony No.2. With graceful melodies, chirpy pizzicato and a radiant brass finale, this piece is sure to put a smile on your face.

Haydn String Quartet in B Minor Mozart String Quintet No.5 in D Major

Brahms String Sextet No.1 in B Flat Major, Op.18 Featuring some of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s outstanding principal string players, this poignant programme opens with Haydn’s graceful yet powerful String Quartet in B Minor. This is followed

by Mozart’s tender and pensive String Quintet in D Major, which ends with an exhilarating fast movement. Closing the concert is Brahms’ String Sextet in B Flat Major. Its lyrical intensity is soaked in tragedy, perfectly balanced by the playful third movement.

National Youth Harp Orchestra

The orchestra offers unique opportunities for harp enthusiasts of all ages and is a positive and inspirational training ground for the world of performing.

The repertoire is rich in diversity, impeccably presented and performed to the highest standard.

They are considered under the same umbrella as The National Youth Orchestra, which are considered the finest Youth Orchestra in Europe.

Beethoven Trio in C Major for Two Oboes and Cor Anglais, Op.87

W.A. Mozart Adagio for Cor Anglais and String Trio Leopold Mozart Divertimento for Oboe, Violin and Cello

W.A. Mozart Oboe Quartet in F Beethoven Theme and Variations from Don Giovanni for Two Oboes and Cor Anglais This is a rare opportunity to hear the oboe and cor anglais take centre stage, and this programme will showcase their exquisite tones. Join musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as they perform a selection of charming works by two of the greatest composers of all time. Including Beethoven’s joyful Trio for Two Oboes and Cor Anglais and Mozart’s Oboe Quartet as well as a gem penned

by Mozart’s father, Leopold, this concert will demonstrate how the oboe rightfully earned its place in the orchestra.

Karelia Suite Violin Concerto No.3 The Lark Ascending ‘Enigma’ Variations

Sibelius’ evocative Karelia Suite opens this concert. Filled with upbeat, catchy melodies as well as moments of quiet contemplation, this stunning work sets a wonderful tone for the evening.

Next, the esteemed Jennifer Pike performs Mozart’s exquisite and intimate Third Violin Concerto followed by Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, with its lyrical violin line soaring to the heavens. Voted the nation’s favourite piece by Classic FM listeners eight times, this portrait of a bird taking flight is a firm favourite.

Elgar’s ever popular and quintessentially English ‘Enigma’ Variations provides a fantastic finish to this performance. A landmark piece not just for Elgar, but for British music.

Adam’s Rib Dance Suite Fire Dance Ain’t Misbehavin’ Two Haiku Come Sunday Can’t Take That Away From Me Duets for Children, arr. for brass quintet

The brass players of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra are known for their punchy orchestral playing and this concert is a chance to hear them perform some dazzling brass repertoire.

This lively programme includes Bernstein’s riotous Dance Suite, Fats Waller’s swinging Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Duke Ellington’s soothing Come Sunday, as well as Gershwin’s infectious Can’t Take That Away From Me and Walton’s Duets for Children, arranged for brass quintet, which contrasts peaceful lullabies with bouncy, spirited movements. With catchy melodies and shimmering tones, this concert is sure to be a toe-tapping delight.

Prince Igor Overture Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Symphony No.5

Borodin’s Prince Igor Overture opens this programme of Russian gems. After a haunting opening, the music takes you through thrilling, fast-paced passages interspersed with moments of poignancy and lush string melodies.

Following this is Rachmaninov’s fiendish Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed by celebrated pianist Tom Poster. This mischievous piece combines playful passages with quieter, more sombre sections, culminating in a dazzling finale.

The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s enrapturing Symphony No.5.

Conductor Nick Davies Presenter Tommy Pearson From swashbuckling pirate ships to gladiator battles, be transported to the exciting world of the silver screen in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Film Music Gala.
