Shannon DeFranza to give student commencement speech

Jimmy Sadowski News Editor

Commencement is just around the corner, for some seniors they are preparing to say goodbye or finishing up their classes, for others, like Shannon DeFranza, they are preparing to give the commencement speech to their peers. DeFranza is an Architecture major, with minors in Sustainability and Art and Architectural History. As for extracurriculars, she is the National Vice PresidentElect for the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), having previously served as the AIAS Northeast Quadrant Director, dances for the Hawkettes and RWU Dance Club, and she has a membership on the Sustainability and Resiliency Task Force. DeFranza has also helped Professor Steve Esons with coordinating Student Academic and Honors Showcase (SASH) projects where she tried to push for sustainability. She is passionate about RWU’s human rights advocacy seminars and working with Scholars at Risk as a liaison to advocate for imprisoned scholar Ahmadreza Djalai. DeFranza said it feels weird to be graduating. “It’s just very weird that my time here at Roger Williams University is ending, my friends and I have been saying that it has been hitting us in waves that we’re not freshmen anymore.” DeFranza also said she has been wanting to speak at a college graduation for a long time. “I’ve been dreaming about giving a speech at a college graduation since I was little,” said DeFranza. “I gave my eighth-grade graduation speech for my little public middle school and I’ve always loved public speaking.” In terms of a speech preview, DeFranza did not want to give too much away but revealed some themes and messages she wanted to get across. “The biggest theme that I put in is the importance of community and making sure your community is

taken care of, especially as we are about to go into very rough times,” said DeFranza. “We have been told as our generation we are the ones that have to fix it all and that is a lot of pressure, but I think we can really pull it off.” “I want to celebrate the resiliency of our class,” said DeFranza. “I think we’ve grown a lot in the last year in ways that were not advertised to us when we walked in the door. Also, I really want people to feel like there’s hope we’re entering into a world that doesn’t look too inviting sometimes with the job market. I think kind of giving that message of hope and really motivating but not in just a cookie-cutter way, but actually talking about the issues that we face and talking about follow through and commitment.” A memory DeFranza looks back on fondly from her time at RWU are the dance shows she was in. “Those days are crazy!” said DeFranza. “We start rehearsing at noon that day, and I usually get there early to practice. Then, we finished at 9 at night, and of course, leading up to that we have dress rehearsals all week, so you’re really just with this great group of people all day.” DeFranza’s favorite thing about RWU is the community, not just with students, but with professors as well. She said she came to RWU because she liked the small class sizes and wanted a personal connection with professors. In her senior year, she said her professors felt more like friends she could talk to about anything. Still, DeFranza feels her speech is bittersweet. “Well it makes me cry sometimes,” she said. “I think it’s going to make people feel a little bit sad and wistful that things are coming to an end, but everything is bittersweet with the graduation. I hope I can capture those emotions everybody’s feeling. I hope people feel proud.” DeFranza also wanted to thank everyone at RWU for the memories. “Thanks for the memories. It has been a very long and challenging time. There have been times where I’ve been pulling two days straight

awake to finish an architecture project and somebody will just stop by my desk and make me smile and it makes it all worth it. Thanks to all the people that have kept me going when I didn’t feel like that was possible,” DeFranza said. After graduation, DeFranza plans to move to Washington

D.C. in June to serve her role as the Vice President of the American Institute of Architecture Students for a year. After, she said she may work in architecture or sustainability or possibly attend graduate school to study design and climate change research at the same time.

Indigenous leaders to deliver commencement address

Rachel Dvareckas Editor-in-Chief

There will be two speakers giving the commencement address for the graduation of the classes of 2020 and 2021 on May 22 and 23. The Chief of the Pokanoket tribe, Sagamore William Guy, and executive director of the Tomaquag Indigenous Museum, Lorén Spears will deliver the address. Associate Professor of Anthropology Dr. Jeremy Campbell has worked closely with the Pokanoket and Narragansett tribes this past year and a half in order to craft a formal Land Acknowledgement of the grounds RWU sits on. Campbell says it shows the university’s commitment to fostering relationships with the communities. “[I’m] really proud that Roger Wiliams is recognizing such accomplished Indigenous leaders from two local nations, the Narrangansett Indian nation and the Pokanoket tribe,” Campbell told The Hawks’ Herald. “It’s about time.” University President Ioannis Miaoulis said these two Indigenous leaders reflect RWU’s mission of “strengthening society” and they should be honored.

“William Guy and Lorén Spears are doing the vital work of helping the public acknowledge and reconcil the untold stories of our past, while preserving and celebrating the Indigenous heritage of Rhode Island,” said Miaoulis. Campbell said history has taught people that Indigenious people were killed off and forcibly moved from their homes, but it glosses over the stories of survival and resilience of Indigenious people. He said the Narragansett and Pokanoket are just two examples of a number of Indigenious groups surviving in the face of racism and others trying to deny their existence; they are inspirational examples despite the many troubles they have faced. “It’s a moment of pride. I think it’s a moment of, potentially, reconciliation, recognition of the incredible courage and resilience of Indigenous nations here in the northeast,” Campbell said. Guy and Spears will also be receiving honorary degrees from the university. The commencement addresses will be available to view online at the RWU commencement webpage.

THE GAVEL

Your source for Student Senate news Hello Hawks! On Monday, we chatted about a resolution that would aim for a decrease in flyer advertising that ultimately failed. College graduate hiring increases for the class of 2021 Amanda Plasse Herald Reporter Employers are projecting a 7.2% increase in hiring for college graduates from the class of 2021 than the class of 2020, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE.) “The rebound in hiring suggests optimism on the part of employers, fueled by expectations around the reopening of shuttered businesses, COVID-19 vaccine distribution, and the addition of jobs to the economy,” according to NACE. Senior and Student Body Treasurer of Student Senate Jacob Hartzler said the state of the job market and economy has made people lean towards going to graduate and law school. “The current job market has had a major impact on my future," said Hartzler. "Although I was planning to go to law school and never seriously considered entering the job market, the current state of our economy in the wake of the pandemic has pushed many people to pursue law and graduate programs in lieu of entering the workforce.” The current job market is better than it was last year when the pandemic was at its peak, but still does not compare to what was seen in 2019. Hartzler also mentioned that the 2021-2022 admissions cycle is the

most competitive in 25 years because the number of people applying, limiting the options and reducing the number of scholarships available. Based on the Spring 2021 Quick Poll: Summer Internships and Fall Recruiting conducted by NACE, it is projected that only 43% of employers expect to conduct hybrid internship programs this summer and only 50% of employers expect to engage in both in-person and virtual activities in fall 2021. Of the 207 total respondents, the Job Outlook 2021 Spring Update survey found, “almost 30% of respondents now report that they will hire more new college graduates – up from 16.5% in the fall – and just 8% plan to decrease hiring, down significantly from 31% reporting such plans in the fall.” Based on the 2021 Internship & Co-op Report, 66.4% of eligible interns converted to full-time employment and 79.9% of eligible interns received a job offer. At Roger Williams University, there is a Center for Career & Professional Development, which can be used to help students find an internship or different job opportunities. Their office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To contact the Center for Career & Professional Development, you can either email ccpd@rwu.edu or call (401) 254-3224.

My Life as a Statue It is that time of year once again, and it is always my least favorite time of the year. It is time to say goodbye to my senior friends. It is always so bittersweet as I reminisce about the first times you walked past my perch four or more years ago, so young and full of excitement for the years to come. Now, here you all are, ready to don your caps and walk towards your futures. From the moment you all walked onto this campus for the first time, to the last moment you will call this place home, you have all never ceased to amaze me. You have spent the past four years preparing for your future, it seems impossible that your futures are now your presents. I have seen many graduating classes come and go and each leaves me just as sad as the last. Everyone who comes through my campus holds a special place in my heart and it always hurts to see you all go. Four years have passed so quickly and it may seem impossible that this is the end of your RWU chapter but I am excited to hear about what your next chapter entails and I am so grateful to have been a part of your life story. I hope you always remember and cherish the memories you made here as a Hawk, whether it was late nights in the library, the first time you met your best friend or any of the fun events that took place in the last four years. Whether you are going to graduate school, traveling the world or starting your career, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. I hope to see you all once again, although you will have to come to visit me because I am a little attached to RWU and do not do well with travel. For now, I must say goodbye my friends, I will miss you dearly.

In December of 2018, I received my acceptance letter from Roger Williams University. It was my first-choice school and since I applied early I never had to worry about regular decision deadlines. As someone who desperately wanted to get out of high school, I was excited to start the next chapter of my life, so I took a deep breath and finished the last few months of my high school career. Graduating in May of 2019, I spent that summer getting paid to wash dishes during the day and spending much-needed time with my friends at night

before we all headed off to our respective universities. I went to RWU that August, made some new friends, changed my major, and was having an incredible time. Then came the pandemic. The realization set in during spring break last year. One by one, my friends said they’d be fully remote for the rest of the semester. I was one of the last ones to receive the same news from RWU and, despite anticipating it, was still confused.

The state of athletics: May 2020 v. May 2021

Drew Hart Sports Manager

“Great, another article on COVID.” That thought was probably echoed in the minds of some who flipped to this article — which is completely understandable given the turbulence that etched itself into the lives of many this school year. The truth is, it would be a mistake not to address where athletics stand as the current school year draws to a close with much more optimism than the standstill uncertainty that filled the minds of athletes, teams, coaches and a university at this time last year.

A farewell to the senior athletes after a year like no other

Kristen Dansereau Sports Editor

As a year filled with unexpected events comes to a close it is time to reflect on RWU’s senior student athletes who have shown resilience and dedication, bringing out the best in the athletics department. The class of 2021 have made a huge impact on their teams and the entire athletic department. As the second class to graduate in the thick of coronavirus, they will go down in history as overcoming incredible circumstances. Spring sports are closing out their seasons as conference play begins to close up. Not all sports have finished yet, but as of May 1, women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field are CCC Conference Champions for spring 2021. Spring sports had their season taken away from them too soon last year due to COVID-19, but they came back this year more dedicated than ever, giving the seniors a last season they will never forget. This year hasn’t been the same for fall and winter sports with their seasons being canceled. They were able to practice throughout the fall to prepare for a spring season before they announced the official cancellation of the 2020-2021 season. The players on fall and winter sports teams have maintained the same competitive level of hard

work and enthusiasm for their sport and teammates. Some of these teams were able to participate in scrimmages this spring, allowing for competitive play outside their own teams. Many underclassmen are reflecting on the impact these seniors have had on the teams and themselves. Each player on a team makes a huge impact on the dynamic and culture. As the seniors move into the next chapter of their lives, their teammates will step into the lessons they have taught the team. Sophie Araneo, a sophomore on the RWU women’s basketball team, will remember their commitment to the team and passion for the sport. “My seniors have such a funny and inseparable relationship that makes the team chemistry so much better,” Araneo said. “[My] fondest memories definitely include them bickering and making fun of one another during warmups.” “I will always remember their encouragement and passion during every huddle... they always had something to say and were the best leaders anyone could ask for.” Connor Smith, a junior on the men’s track and field team, has felt motivated by the leadership and positive environment created by

the current seniors since his freshman year. He similarly reflected on their commitment to the team and the blissful yet competitive nature they brought each day. “It made me look forward to practice everyday because there would always be a laugh or two on top of a good run,” Smith said. “The fondest memory I have is my freshman year at our conference championship meet during cross country… I remember specifically getting to the starting line and a quick speech given by Connor Hayden about how he wouldn’t want to run with any other team

and no matter what happened, he was proud of the team...Having a positive mindset among the team and rarely feeling any negativity speaks to the environment they helped create.” Smith was taught a multitude of lessons, including how to be committed to the team and its goals as well as fun, leading by example. “Most importantly, they taught me what it means to run for Roger Williams,” said Smith. Jack Wetzel, a junior on the men’s soccer team, recalls the dedication this year’s seniors had to the team, pushing themselves and the team to work hard and be the best players they could be. “They are very hardworking, determined, and supportive of each other,” Wetzel said.

“Off and on the field, they have been proven to be great leaders and great people.” Since before he came to Roger, on his recruitment overnight, Wetzel has felt welcomed and accepted by the seniors as a team and friend. “I had so much fun hanging out with them that night and the new friendships that I formed with the seniors helped confirm my belief that going to Roger was the right decision,” said Wetzel. The seniors' commitment has seeped into the underclassmen when most of them remained playing for this spring season even after the CCC season was canceled. “This selfless act by the seniors showed me how important it is to commit to something you love even when things are not going well,” said Wetzel. “I just would like to thank the seniors again for all that they have done for the team. I have made many great friendships and memories with them over the years. They have done so much for our soccer program and have shown me how to act as a teammate, and as a person.” The Herald staff recognize these times have been especially hard for the seniors preparing to graduate after abnormal circumstances this year. We applaud all sports in each season, and for making thebest out of the cards they were dealt.

Affordable gifts for graduating seniors to capture long lasting memories Courtney Caouette Herald Reporter

It’s that time of year again: our senior friends are graduating. Are you searching for a perfect gift that won’t break the budget? Look no further! Here are a few ideas of inspiration for a memorable parting gift:

Memory boxes

This gift is very adaptable. You can purchase a photo box or even decorate an old shoe box to try to contain countless college memories. Next step? Fill it! Did you and your friends collect wristbands and stickers from campus events? Throw them in! Next up: fill the box with photographs of memories, handwritten notes about them and anything else your heart desires. These boxes can continue to grow, so consider mailing letters in the weeks to come. Memory boxes are very personal and fun to make. A good tear may be shed while designing them, but don’t worry, it’ll add to the aesthetic of graduation!

A playlist

Who does not love a good playlist? Whether it be on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, or an old fashioned CD, you cannot go wrong with giving a playlist. Fill it with songs that make you think of your friend or songs that will leave them reminiscing about an experience you shared together. Consider adding songs from their favorite artist or ones from our spring concerts throughout the years.

Bake, cook or order out

Did someone say dinner with friends? Yes, please! Everyone loves a good meal or dessert, especially one that does not require any prior preparation. What better way to send your friends off than with a plate of cookies to go or a meal prepared and eaten with friends? Another option is to order their favorite Bristol take out dish, or order them something when they get home and eat together over a Zoom call.

A photo collage or virtual slide

An oldie but goodie. Nothing says I am going to miss you like a compilation of pictures of the many college adventures. It is said that a picture says a thousand words. How many photos can you collect from your time together?

Your fashion guide for graduation day

Kayla Ivan Arts & Culture Manager

With graduation around the corner, getting your perfect outfit ready is one of many aspects to think about when preparing to walk with your class. Here is a fashion guide for the graduating class of 2021: 1. CLASSIC WHITE DRESS You can’t go wrong with the classics — wearing a white dress, typically a shorter cut is the signature college graduation look. Personalize the look with accessories such as gold or silver necklaces, rings or a statement piece. Pair the white dress with neutral heels such as wedge sandals or a black pump. 2. STUNNING BODYCON DRESS Go for a tighter, more form-fitting outfit with bodycon dresses. Select colors that suit you or complement the spring season such as white, pink, peach, baby blue, etc. Your cap and gown will look perfect with this sleek look paired with strappy sandals or heels that you are most comfortable walking in onstage!

3. CHIC JUMPSUIT Looking for a powerful fashion statement to say goodbye to your college years with? Jumpsuits are comfortable, easy to style and very professional while still remaining chic. With this timeless graduation outfit, there are several options for colors including black, white, blue or any other shades or hues you enjoy. To stay in line with RWU colors, go for a blue selection and rep your soon-to-be alma mater in style. 4. POLISHED DRESS SHIRT WITH TROUSERS If dresses are not your thing (guys and girls included!), try on a button-up shirt or collared dress shirt with a professional tie to graduate in style. The RWU Bookstore sells several tie options if you want to show your school pride while being handed your degree. Selecting the perfect color for your button down or collared shirt is up to you; a white top is the most polished, although other color options include, light blue, navy, black, crimson and so on. Get creative with your look; after all, this is your graduation day, so make it your own!

Craft an accessory or decoration

Perhaps your friend is going to graduate school and needs a new wall decoration, or maybe they love friendship bracelets. Whatever the case, consider something handmade they can bring with them in the next part of their journey, in the working world or otherwise!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In 2017, RWU spent nearly $7,000,000 of the school’s money to purchase the Wind Hill Estate, directly adjacent to the west side of campus across Ferry Road. As I was exploring the property recently, I found myself being told to leave by someone who never revealed their credentials, exploring just the same as I, saying that it was “private property,” and that I was “not allowed to be [there]” even though I am a student of the university. It seems that even though the school’s endowment bought the land, it is now cordoned off from the campus, and used only for storage. The ownership of the property remains ambiguous. Where is the sense in that? The Board of Trustees has let the property slip into severe disrepair - broken windows, overgrown vegetation, and no working heat threaten the integrity of the estate. There seems to be no immediate intention of fixing it or renovating it for future university use. The site has stunningly underutilized potential for RWU. I am angered that even though the above is sadly true, I am being told to vacate the area. If Wind Hill is truly “private property,” then the party that owns the property must only be the university, unless an alternate arrangement has been agreed on. If this is the case, students and faculty should be informed after years of secrecy. It still is not known what the ownership arrangement of the land is, or what the plans for the house are, and students and faculty are expected to avoid the property at all costs. Why is this? Those associated with the school should have sanctioned use of the land during daylight hours, or at least be informed as to why the arrangement is still shrouded in a cloud of unknowns and confusion. The Board of Trustees may have plans for the distant future, as there was a large sum of money spent on master planning last year, but that should not mean that students cannot explore the property or be interested in its preservation until that is achieved. There likely are plans - and students deserve to know what they are.

EDITORIAL: THIS IS NOT GOODBYE To the wonderful seniors, This year has been one unlike any other. We were faced with extraordinary circumstances, but all three of you continued to persevere through hardships and lead the staff successfully. The work you have all produced is something you should be very proud of. Being able to work with you three has been such a rewarding experience and I would not trade it for the world. I have learned so much from you and I know the rest of the staff is so grateful for the opportunity we had to work with you. Isabella, working beside you this last year has taught me so much and having you as a role model is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. I can only hope that I will lead my staff half as well as you. Megan, your bubbly personality and cheerful spirit will be missed immensely. Thank you for being such an amazing person. Bailee, your talent in design always amazes me. You had to take on the role of designing the entire paper by yourself, yet you still managed to produce fantastic work every single week. I am so glad I was able to work closely with you this past year. I know you will all be so successful as you are all incredibly talented. I cannot wait to see what you do in the future. Until next time, Rachel
