enior point guard Chris Wilson and sophomore wing DeAndre’ Bembry have been named captains of the Saint Joseph’s University men’s basketball team for the 2014-2015 season.

Wilson, the six-foot-three-inch senior from Fayetteville, North Carolina, averaged 9.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game last season while playing an average of 34 minutes per game for the Hawks. Wilson is proud and excited to be a captain of the team for his last year on Hawk Hill.

“It’s definitely an honor, and a sign of respect from your teammates,” said Wilson, “But to be honest with you, this will be my third season as the starting point guard, and even since I was a younger guy on this team I’ve been one of the more vocal guys. I think the main thing that has changed now without some of the older guys that we’ve had that have gone off to play professionally – Langston, Ron, and Halil – without those three guys, now my role is bigger.”

Although Wilson’s impact on the floor may be increased, he believes that it won’t change his mindset or approach going into this season.

“That’s really the only change. I don’t really change the way I approach practice or the way I approach my teammates. I always have a leadership style approach because I want to see guys do good and I want to win,” Wilson said.

Starting as point guard for the past three seasons for the Hawks, Wilson is no stranger to extended time on the court.

Wilson has carried the bulk of the load in the backcourt for St. Joe’s over the past few years, but has been working diligently over the offseason to polish some aspects of his game for the upcoming season.

“I think overall my shooting abilities, my scoring abilities, and my ball handling have been the main things,” said Wilson.

“But really, just trying to improve the way that I look at it and understand the game.

Just really trying to improve my understanding by watching film and become an all around student of the game just so I can get better everywhere.”

Leaving Hawk Hill after this season, Wilson acknowledges that he has a variety of both personal and team goals he would like to achieve before he makes his departure from college basketball. For Wilson, it’s not about statistics, but about how he can help the team grow and compete.

“I want to compete every day in practice and in every game. I really just want to have fun with this senior year; this is it, this is the last year of college basketball that I get to experience in my life, and I really just want to soak it all in and live in the moment and really push my teammates. The better I see my teammates do, the happier I’ll be, and the better job I think I’ll be doing as the point guard,” Wilson said.

As he enters this season, Wilson believes he is ready to make an impact both on and off the court to help St. Joe’s return to where they were last season. When asked about what he’ll still be working on entering the season, Wilson responded with a blunt answer.

“Everything,” he said, “I think I can still improve every aspect of my game, definitely.”

DeAndre’ Bembry has taken a drastically different route to being selected as a team captain this season. Bembry, entering his sophomore year for the Hawks, averages 12.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while averaging almost 33 minutes per contest.

Bembry is only the second sophomore in school history to be named a team captain, the other being Joe Oakes in the 19361937 season.

“It’s definitely a big honor to be one of the first ones, especially the first one for Martelli,” Bembry said. “Even being the second one for the university is definitely a big honor for me.”

Although he is only a sophomore, Bembry does not believe his relative inexperience will hinder him in any way in taking on a more vocal leadership role on the team. With an extensive freshman class, Bembry looks to help the younger players become more acquainted with the program and grow as players and individuals.

“I think I’m good with leading people, I know how to talk to people and how to help people get up when they’re sad and having a bad game. Leading is not one of the hard things for me to do,” Bembry said.

Wilson and Bembry both have their minds set on being team leaders as well as mentors to the younger players on the squad. They both pointed out the fact that they hope to have major impacts on the court this season, but their primary goal is to compete as a team and win.

Wilson stated his goals for the team as clearly as possible.

“I want to win another A-10 Championship and I want to win an NCAA Tournament.”

Senior guard prepares for final season on Hawk Hill ANTHONY PANVINI ’16 Assistant Sports Editor

E

ntering her fourth and final season donning the crimson and gray, senior guard Natasha Cloud has one thing on her mind: to finish the season with no regrets.

“My mindset going into this year has just been no regrets,” said Cloud. “I’ve had an A-10 championship and I’ve had two NCAA appearances. Going into your last year, you see your career just withering down, and whether there is a future in this or not is up in the air, but especially for this university and this program is that I want to finish my career here with no regrets and just giving this university and this community everything I have.”

Being one of the most elite guards in the nation, Cloud is coming off of a remarkable junior season in which she helped the Hawks reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Among her many awards, some of the more notable include Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year, Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team, Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team, All-Big 5 First Team, and being named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List for the top point guard in the nation.

Cloud was also this year’s Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive Team selection.

One thing that keeps her motivated is the team’s motto: “Going hard at everything we do.”

“I think that’s just something that we live by as a team,” said Cloud. “I think that’s what makes us such a special team and such a special program in that we play with a chip on our shoulder, we play being the underdog, and I think we outwork a lot of other people, so being that relentless and that gritty team is what we try to live by.”

As far as Cloud is concerned, she also owes thanks to her teammates for her success on the court.

“It’s always good to be individually recognized, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t be in this position that I am without my team and my teammates,” said Cloud.

Despite these awards, Cloud continued to develop her game over the past summer, specifically working on her offensive game.

She explained that being a defensive-minded player, offense has always come second, so she wanted to focus on the offensive side of the ball before coming into this season.

“I’ve always been known as a slasher or a driver, so this summer I focused on making my mid-range more consistent and developing a three point shot that’s more consistent,” Cloud said.

Head Coach Cindy Griffin described

Cloud as a “natural leader” and believes she will have no problem finding the hoop this year.

“She leads by example; she also leads by her production,” said Griffin. “She fills up the stat sheet whether it be points, rebounds, assists, you know she’s a kid that has been on the verge of a triple-double her last year, and I think you’re going to see that this year as far as points, rebounds, and assists.”

Griffin is not afraid to place the ball in Cloud’s hands and let her take control on the court. This is due to her ability to perform well on the court as well as the sharpness of her mental game.

“She is like a coach on the court, she has a very good basketball IQ,” Griffin said.

“She knows what we are trying to run and who we are trying to get the ball to at the right time. She is a reflection of the coaching staff on the court.”

Going into her final season, Cloud is experiencing a lot of overwhelming feelings. However, most importantly, she is excited to play.

“There are a lot of overwhelming feelings, but I’m focused, I’m ready for this season, and I’ve prepared for it. I’m just excited for it,” said Cloud.

Griffin also gave Cloud some advice.

“I just told her to be herself, and she’s

going to have to understand the new personnel and the new players and where they like to catch the ball and where they are the most successful. So we’re 23 practices in, we’ve had two scrimmages, and she’s better now than she was 20 days ago for sure,” said Griffin.

All in all, when asked about the first word that comes to mind when Cloud’s name comes up, Griffin responded with: “Energy. I think she plays with a lot of passion. She plays with a lot of energy and emotion. She’s fun to watch.”

Cloud agreed 100 percent.

“I am a very emotional player,” said Cloud. “I’ve been told a lot that I wear my heart on my sleeve, so you’ll be able to tell when I’m upset or when I’m happy,” said Cloud. “Energy is definitely something I agree with—I’m the loudest one in the gym, I’m always up, I’m always excited, and always trying to pump the team up. As a point guard, it’s kind of my role to be the energy behind the team.”

All in all, Cloud is looking to end her final season with one thing: another A-10 championship.

“Personally, one thing that I would love is another A-10 championship,” said Cloud.

“For me, that’s the one thing that I want to leave this year with.”

The Saint Joseph’s University men’s basketball team will welcome a plethora of freshmen this season to replenish a roster that lost three essential senior leaders last year.

Freshmen Shavar Newkirk, Mike Booth, Obi Romeo, Kyle Thompson, Markell Lodge, and James Demery will all attempt to help the Hawks return to the level of prominence they attained last season as they won the Atlantic 10 Championship and made an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Shavar Newkirk, the six-foot point guard from New York, averaged 17 points, 7 assists, and 4 rebounds per game as a senior at Cardinal Hayes High School. Newkirk led his team to a 75-14 record over his three years, and racked up All-City First Team honors his junior and senior seasons.

Mike Booth averaged 18 points per game as a senior and holds the school record at Bishop Shanahan for three-pointers made in a season with a total of 55. The six-foot-three-inch guard from Thornton, Pennsylvania walked on to the Hawks’ squad and looks to make an impact with his precision shooting.

Obi Romeo is a six-foot-10-inch forward from White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia who averaged 13 points, 14 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game while shooting 60 percent from the field at Greenbrier East High School. Born in Anambra State, Nigeria, Romeo moved to the United States in 2011. While he has only played basketball for six years, Romeo was looking for a program with a good coaching staff that could help him to continue to grow both as a player and an individual.

“The coaches are not just coaches, but also fatherly figures. So we love each other and want to succeed,” Romeo said. “I’m not worried or not if I play much now, because I know my time will come.”

Kyle Thompson, another walk on, averaged 12 points per game and filled up the stat sheet for Saint Joseph’s Prep by leading the squad in rebounds, assists, and steals. The six-foot-two-inch guard hails from Mt. Laurel, New Jersey

and was an All-Catholic League selection as a senior.

Markell Lodge, the six-foot-seven-inch forward, averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game as a senior at Pace Academy. Born in Washington, North Carolina, Lodge played for the 17-Under U.S. Adidas National team. Lodge will sit out the 2014-2015 season to focus on his academics.

James Demery averaged 18 points and 5 rebounds per game for Northside Christian Academy, the 18th nationally ranked team. The six-foot-six-inch forward earned All-Conference and All-County honors, and also led his team to three consecutive NCISAA 2A titles. Demery had a variety of college options, but many aspects of St. Joe’s program helped him make his decision.

“I would have to say Coach Phil Martelli and the players [helped my decision]. I like the program and I think it’s a good program for me,” said Demery. “Coach Phil Martelli takes care of his players and makes sure we’re doing the right things.”

Demery admits that the transition from high school ball to collegiate play has been difficult, but says he’s been working even harder to keep up with the competition.

“I’ve been working on my jump shot. My personal goals are becoming a better leader and a better teammate.

I want to shoot the ball more consistently, and most of all win the Atlantic 10 Championship,” Demery said.

Losing essential seniors from last season’s impressive squad, such as Langston Galloway, Ronald Roberts Jr., and Halil Kanacevic, the Hawks were in need of a stellar group of freshmen to replenish a roster thirsting for more talent.

It seems as though the Hawks have hit the mark with this deep group of players to add to the mix. Although the team may be inexperienced, this group of freshmen has the opportunity to make in instant impact on the court for the Hawks this season.

OVEMENT men’s and women’s basketball teams ANTHONY PANVINI ’16 Assistant Sports Editor This season, the Saint Joseph’s University women’s basketball team is welcoming five new freshman players onto the court: two forwards, Candace Belvedere and Adashia Franklyn, and three guards, Avery Marz, Sarah Veilleux, and Chelsea Woods.

“They are a very talented group of players,” said Head Coach Cindy Griffin. “Some of them are coming from very good programs, some of them have scored over 2,000 points in high school, so they’re very talented.”

Forward Candace Belvedere played high school ball at Kellenberg Memorial. She was team captain her senior year and averaged 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.1 blocks, and 1.5 assists per game. Averaging almost a double-double while filling up the stat sheet in other areas, Belvedere is a threat in every aspect of the game.

Adashia Franklyn, forward, played at West Chester Bayard Rustin, where she averaged 15 points and 13 rebounds per game during her senior year and topped her career off with 1,330 points. Franklyn dominated the boards on both ends of the floor in high school, and has the ability to do the same at the collegiate level.

Guard Avery Marz led Wilson West Lawn to four straight District 3 AAAA and Berks County Championships, all while scoring over 1,000 career points.

Sarah Veilleux, guard, went to Regional Hebron, Andover, and Marlborough High School, where she set the RHAM all-time basketball scoring record among boys and girls with 2,079 points.

Guard Chelsea Woods played at Freire Charter, where she became the all-time leading scorer in the history of the program, scoring 2,031 points. She was awarded Best Female Player in the Philadelphia public league her senior year and led Southeastern Pennsylvania in scoring as a junior, averaging 22.8 points and 11 rebounds per game.

While Griffin is aware that this season will be a chance for the incoming freshmen to learn from the older players, she still holds all of the freshmen to a high standard.

“I want them to contribute, but they have to be able to compete in practice to earn those minutes,” said Griffin.

One thing that can limit minutes however, is injury— something that the freshmen on the team have been struggling with so far early in their time at the collegiate level.

Griffin explained that the preseason is taking a toll on the freshmen in terms of injury and has limited some of their play.

“We’ve had a lot of injuries in the preseason with a lot of our freshman,” said Griffin. “We’ve only had three freshman out of the five competing in the last week, so they’re a little bit behind as far as getting on the court and getting reps.”

Coming into the season, Griffin makes sure to make one thing clear to all of the freshmen: to give it 110 percent.

The first thing she tells new players on the team is “to do the best they can, to compete, and to have their role be a part of our tradition,” said Griffin. “They’ve got to make their own mark and find their way, but they know that we are going to make them the best players that they can possibly be.”

reshman Mike Booth had been working towards this moment for years.

The shining lights reflected off the polished floor of Hagan Arena as he stepped onto the court. Behind him, the Hawk flapped proudly, nodding with excitement. The cheerleaders and dancers surrounding him waved their pom-poms wildly as he emerged onto center court.

Students cheered as his name was called.

He smiled, waved, and made his way to the players’ bench.

Booth was officially a St. Joe’s Hawk.

Hawk Hysteria was held on Oct. 17 in celebration of the official start of the NCAA basketball season. The St. Joe’s basketball players were introduced to the public for the first time this season, and the event marked Booth’s first time before the student body as a member of the men’s basketball team.

“It was a cool experience, hearing your

name called and seeing your hard work pay off. You’re officially on the team now,” Booth said, reflecting on the night.

Freshman walk-on guard Mike Booth is no stranger to the St. Joe’s basketball program. Booth’s grandfather, Harry Booth, was the St. Joe’s men’s basketball head coach from 1974 to 1978, and was inducted into the St. Joe’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Mike Booth carries his grandfather’s legacy with him, but he is here to make a name for himself in the St. Joe’s basketball program.

Booth began playing basketball at the age of four. Growing up, he played several other sports, including soccer, baseball, and track. Basketball, though, was always his favorite.

Along with his grandfather, Booth’s uncle played Division I basketball at Mount St. Mary’s University, and his dad played Division III basketball at Catholic University.

“We’re a pretty big basketball family,”

Booth said.

Booth played basketball for his high school, Bishop Shanahan High School, where he was a three-year starter.

“He was a captain as a senior, and was always one of the leaders throughout his time at Bishop Shanahan,” said Ken Doyle, Booth’s high school basketball coach.

Two of the years that Booth started at Bishop Shanahan, his team went to the playoffs.

“He was our leading scorer this past season, averaging about 18 points a game,” Doyle said.

Booth was passionate about basketball during his high school years. Practice quickly became a priority as he set his sights towards collegiate-level ball.

“I’d work almost every day on it, and even on the weekends, even if it meant missing going out with friends or staying out late,” Booth said.

Booth’s efforts did not go unrecognized.

“His commitment was 100 percent,” Doyle said. “He is a relentless, tireless worker.”

Booth practiced independently every day, on top of practices and games. He also began working out with St. Joe’s Coach Rob Sullivan, director of men’s basketball operations, during his sophomore year of high school.

“He works very hard, and he definitely deserves every opportunity he’s given, because not many kids work as hard as he does,” Doyle said.

The possibility of Booth going on to play basketball as a walk-on at the Division I level started to become a reality.

Booth began to have conversations with Doyle, Sullivan, and other college basketball coaches about what it would take for him to be a walk-on.

Sullivan told Booth that if continued to play well, he could potentially have a spot on the St. Joe’s team.

This eventually turned into a conversation with Phil Martelli, St. Joe’s men’s basketball head coach, who went on to offer Booth a spot on the roster.

Doyle knew Booth was capable of playing Division I basketball by his performance against other Division I bound

athletes and his astounding level of commitment.

“That was his goal, and if St. Joe’s gave him the opportunity to do that, he was going to do it,” Doyle said.

Martelli immediately recognized the potential in Booth.

“He has a competitive spirit, and I would say the reason that I asked him to join us would be his humility, his willingness to sacrifice, and his understanding that being part of a team is bigger than each one of us individually,” Martelli said. “[He is an] extraordinarily hardworking young guy.”

Booth was elated to accept his spot on the roster.

“I kind of always had my heart set on St. Joe’s,” he said. “I looked at other schools, but ideally, if I could play here, this is where I wanted to play.”

Booth said he is proud to be part of a team with such a rich history, and he looks forward to contributing to the Hawks’ successes.

“It’s great to be part of a basketball program with such a great tradition, especially coming off a championship last year. I’m looking to add anything I can to keep that up this year,” Booth said.

Booth made it clear that he is not at St. Joe’s to bask in his grandfather’s legacy. He made his decision to attend and play basketball at St. Joe’s independently, and said he does not feel pressure to live up to his grandfather’s name.

“He [my grandfather] just tells me to be Mike Booth, and be the best person I can be out there,” Booth said.

Booth brings a great deal of talent and dedication to the Hawks’ roster. Both Martelli and Doyle remarked that Booth’s basketball IQ is his best asset as a player.

He will continue to work on improving his own skills as a member of a team of defending champions, and continue to make the transition from high school to Division I basketball.

“I think he learns something every day, he tries something new every day, and he feels challenged every day,” Martelli said.

“And that’s what I watch. And I would add that the challenge is not too great for him.”

Allegations against campus hotspot Former employees speak out against Landmark culture

andmark Americana Tap and Grille first opened on Saint Joseph’s University’s campus on Aug. 20, 2012, and immediately became a convenient and popular destination for St. Joe’s students. However, the popular bar has become a source of concern for former and current employees alike.

Several St. Joe’s students have found employment at Landmark since the restaurant’s opening; however, issues with management have caused many to leave.

One former employee, Lauren Cherry, ’15, worked as a Landmark hostess from February to November of 2013.

“That seems like a short amount of time, but that was one of the longest...people just come in and come out so quickly,” said Cherry.

Another former employee, Lauren Rollman, ’15, said that the turnover rates were an issue.

“It was a huge problem, we often would have people quit. We would have to train people a lot, they didn’t like the job, couldn’t accommodate the hours,” said Rollman.

Cherry also said one of the problems she encountered while working at Landmark was with the General Manager, Keith Cesare.

“Keith, the General Manager, he treats

everyone like a criminal,” said Cherry.

Rollman also reported problems with Landmark’s management. “[The managers] really tried to play the power card, which I don’t respond well to because I’m an adult, too. I might be below you in terms of the hierarchy in the workplace, but I’m still a person, you don’t have the right to talk down to me,” added Rollman.

A former employee, who wishes to remain anonymous, confirmed the problems with management.

“In terms of the management, it was like walking on eggshells during every shift. You know you would walk in there and wonder, ‘What am I going to get yelled at for doing today?’” said the source.

The source added that the management had cameras installed around the restaurant.

“There was one day where it was completely dead in the restaurant, there weren’t many customers…but I remember for five seconds I had stopped and was just standing by one of the counters…One of my coworkers came up to me and said, ‘Don’t do that, Keith can see you,’ and I said, ‘What are you talking about?’ and she said that there are cameras in the office, and sure enough I heard my name being called from the office and so I went up to see what was going on and Keith said, ‘Stop standing around do some side work’…I saw that

there were just cameras everywhere that can see what all employees are doing at all times,” said the source.

Another issue raised by Cherry was how the young women working at Landmark were required to dress and the ways in which they were subsequently treated.

“Also the servers’ dress code is, like, out of control… They are required to wear [a] skin tight t-shirt that, like, emphasizes parts of women that some girls don’t even have, but the shirts that they wear make it look like they have...I didn’t like that,” said Cherry.

The women working at Landmark also sometimes received sexually inappropriate comments.

“In terms of the managers, I just don’t know how to phrase that...it definitely happened. It wasn’t a huge problem, I definitely think I carried myself in a professional way,” said Rollman.

Rollman continued, “I will say one of the managers was really nice, but one time I just felt like it was weird; he touched me too much, and that’s maybe just how he was. But again, like, I’m just not the kind of person that, you know, you put your arm around…it’s a little weird, but again I just made it clear, body language to body language, like I’m not having it.”

Cherry also experienced inappropriate behavior while working at the restaurant.

“I definitely got that more from the

kitchen staff than from the managers. The kitchen staff…it’s a known thing that they are all convicted felons, and I respect him [Keith] for hiring them…but, like, when I would walk in the back to come in for work I expected to get an ‘up-down’ [look] at least by like four different people, and they were friendly enough, it was just like enough…,” said Cherry.

Rollman explained how issues of sexism are a part of the restaurant industry and are not specific to the St. Joe’s Landmark.

“I heard from one person, and I think this is a perfect metaphor, [the] restaurant industry is pimps, hoes, and slaves.

The pimps are the managers—they collect your money at the end of the night, they send you out to do their dirty work…You got your hoes, the waitresses—they’re expected to look nice, dress nice, give the customer whatever they want even if you know you’re not happy about it. You know that’s something that I had to put up with a lot…I didn’t like when I got stared at, even if they didn’t say anything, it was so uncomfortable and many a times they did say things or they did touch me so, again, [it] reinforces that there is some sexism there… The slaves were like the people in the kitchen who were almost always minorities; they’re almost always black or Hispanic,” said Rollman.

Department of Public Safety Reports (Oct. 31-Nov. 6) October 31 Public Safety was notified by a Saint Joseph’s University student in regards to person(s) unknown removing his MacBook Pro laptop from his room in Sullivan Hall. Incident is under investigation.

Public Safety officers located a wallet inside Merion Hall. Attempts have been made to contact the owner.

Public Safety confiscated alcohol from a St. Joe’s student inside the lobby of the McShain Residence Center. Residence Life was notified.

Public Safety was notified regarding water damage to a second floor room in the Science Center. Facilities Management was notified.

Public Safety was notified of an odor of marijuana coming from a second floor suite in the LaFarge Residence Center. Public Safety officers and Residence Life responded to the suite. A search of the room revealed a small amount of marijuana. Philadelphia Police was notified and responded. Community Standards was notified.

Public Safety was notified by three St. Joe’s student in regards to being approached by the same individual, described as a white male in his thirties asking for directions on the campus near the Campion Student Center. Public Safety officers responded, but were unable to locate the individual. Incident is under investigation.

Landmark management issues brought to foreContinued LANDMARK from Pg. 1 Two Landmark policies that were also of concern to employees are the “walk-out” and the “no call, no show” policies.

The “walk-out” policy is used when customers leave the restaurant without paying and the Landmark employee waiting that table has to cover the unpaid bill.

“There was a ‘walk-out’ policy where, let’s say it’s after 10, you have to get a credit card because if someone walks out and you didn’t get a credit card, it’s your fault. You have to pay the check, and it happened to me once, I think the first time it happened their check was like $80 and I was like, ‘Do I really have to pay for this? That’s all I’m going to make tonight.’ I think they let me go that time, but again, it’s like really strict.

I think…there were times where I had to pay for customer’s things even if it’s just a few drinks… it still sucks,” said Rollman.

The “no call, no show” policy became a problem for Cherry when she told her manager that she couldn’t work a shift during one of her night classes, during which she wasn’t available to work all semester. After she informed her manager of the time conflict, he said he would take care of it. However, the shift was not changed, and when Cherry didn’t arrive, she was immediately terminated.

“I had already given my two weeks, I didn’t really care, but then it just made me look like an idiot because instead of me quitting, then I got terminated… I feel bad for the people that are still there,” said Cherry.

In terms of suggestions for Landmark’s improvement, Cherry said that Cesare needs to have more respect for his employees and that there also needs to be a better method of training new staff.

In regards to training, Cherry added, “As far as solutions, I think maybe their training was, like, so vague. It was literally like, ‘OK, you’re going to work two days

with another employee’...just having a more concrete method of training.”

“If there was more respect for his [Cesare’s] employees, like, he could build more of a bond...just respecting his employees as human beings…I remember last spring semester, my first semester I was working there, he scheduled a kid when he had an exam…and he made him miss the exam; he would not let him leave,” said Cherry.

The anonymous source said that the management can get away with this behavior because they know they will have an endless supply of college applicants.

“I think it’s because the management is very aware that they can run the tightest ship possible and get away with it because people are going to still apply to Landmark because they need the money,” said the source.

While some of these issues are a part of the broader restaurant industry, the question remains, however, whether or not this Landmark should be required to adjust its policies because it is a part of St. Joe’s cam-

pus.

Rollman acknowledged that Landmark is an important part of the St. Joe’s campus community, and questioned what the relationship should be between the two.

“It [Landmark] is affiliated pretty strongly with St. Joe’s, a lot of students go there…It does give people a place to work, it gives people a place to meet for dinner, to have, you know, meetings with professors, social events, there’s a lot of things going on there with St. Joe’s, and that’s awesome.

But it made my grades a lot worse, it made me really stressed out… I don’t think it’s at fault on the university at all...I mean maybe bringing awareness to St. Joe’s, you know, is something they can do…Maybe just, like, reminding St. Joe’s students, ‘Please tip well, please be courteous and respectful, because these are your peers, and they’re working long hours, and they’ve got just as much going on as you do,’” said Rollman.

Another former employee of Landmark, Emily Skill, ’16, who has since transferred to the University of Daytona in Ohio,

said she doesn’t know what the university can do about the situation, but that working at Landmark is a negative experience.

“I think it’s nice having a restaurant off-campus or near campus that isn’t Campion, but I don’t know, like, what St. Joe’s could do. I mean, they can’t go in and fire the head manager, but I definitely think it negatively impacts the students who work there,” said Skill.

According to Joseph Lunardi, associate vice president of Marketing Communications, the relationship between St. Joe’s and Landmark entails that Landmark pay rent to St. Joe’s to lease the restaurant space, and the two meet for every quarter to discuss business.

“It’s more than a connection of, you know, again, a student working at a place completely independent of the university.

The safety of students on our property is job one, so we would get involved if that was ever an issue, and maybe this is something that leads to that. There’s no way for us to know that at this point,” said Lunardi.

Lunardi said that if these allegations are officially reported to the university, the university would take action to protect the students.

“This is the first we’ve heard of it, obviously student safety and welfare is the top concern, but it’s difficult to respond even in general... If there was a significant issue or pattern that involved student safety obviously we would get involved and if that’s what someone is alleging then it needs to go through those [university] channels,” said Lunardi.

Keith Cesare declined to comment on specific allegations, but said, “I want to express that I promote an open door policy to discuss all in-house issues and concerns of Landmark employees.”

Midterms for the government 2014 elections bring major political shifts, but low voter turnout

While the national win went to the Republicans, here in Pennsylvania the victory went to the Democrats with the election of Tom Wolf as governor.

“Symbolically, it is a victory for Democrats,” Scola said. “Corbett was the first Pennsylvania governor not to win re-election in decades, and Wolf has a clear mandate for his agenda.”

Harper was happy, but not surprised,

by Wolf ’s win. “Tom Wolf had been leading in the polls for awhile by a pretty significant margin, and Corbett was really hurt by education and his failure to implement his agenda in terms of pension relief and privatization of liquor. I think everyone kind of anticipated that Wolf would be our next governor.”

Rusnak said the College Republicans, who had participated in a phone bank for Corbett’s campaign, were disappointed by the loss. “We tried really hard to campaign for Corbett, we were hoping he would win.”

Scola noted that while Wolf may have won the position, he still faces a Republican majority. “Control of the Pa. General Assembly didn’t change, and Republicans actually picked up seats, so Wolf will have to get buy-in from a Republican-controlled legislature. The most substantive change we will see is a shift in issue focus and more robust conversations about things like education, the natural gas tax, et cetera.”

Besides the Republican-majority Congress and the Wolf win here in Pennsylvania, another key topic of discussion post-Election Day is the low number of actual votes. In most states, the number of voters who turned out for this election decreased according to the United States Elections Project. For Pennsylvania in particular, they stated that only 36.1 percent of eligible voters entered a ballot.

Rusnak said the ongoing conflict between the Republican and Democratic Parties played a major role in people’s decision not to vote. “People will tell me, ‘Oh, I hate politics cause no one gets along, no one negotiates, no one agrees,’ so they think that it’s better to stay out of it and not pay attention.”

Harper agreed that this polarization between the parties has created a stalemate that has made people politically apathetic.

“I think that the polarization that currently exists in our government today makes things so that if you do reach across the aisle, you’re seen as, ‘Oh, you’re too moderate, you’re not a true conservative, you’re not a true liberal, you’re not a true Democrat, you’re not a true Republican’… The only way that things are going to get done

On November 4, the top of every American’s Facebook newsfeed included a button reading “I Voted,” allowing people to find their polling station and post a status update saying they voted in the 2014 Midterm Elections.

Just over a week later, the ballots have been counted, the tallies have been updated, and a new group of representatives have been voted to various legislative and governmental positions.

On a national level, this election saw a major shift for the Republican Party, creating a Republican majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

According to Becki Scola, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, this Republican take-over was expected.

“This tends to happen in midterm elections—the party opposite to the President’s party picks up seats in Congress during midterms,” said Scola. “Voters tend to ‘punish’ the President’s party when things are not perceived to be going well.”

Kristen Harper, ’15, a political science major and president of the College Democrats, said she was disappointed in the political shift, but agreed that this change was no surprise. “Pundits had been forecasting for months that the 2014 Midterms were going to see the new ‘Republican Wave,’ and unfortunately that’s exactly what came to fruition.”

Audrey Rusnak, ’16, a finance and business intelligence double major and president of the College Republicans, said her organization was excited about the victory.

“I’m glad to see that the Republicans are coming back from the lull that they experienced from the last presidential election,” Rusnak said. “I think it will help them with the 2016 presidential election…and I think it is helping put face back into the Republican Party.”

Rusnak added that she hopes this new majority will be able to push through some policy changes. “I think that they will try to repeal Obamacare, or at least change some aspects of it, I think they’ll try to change Obama’s foreign policy a little bit…I think they’ll have a greater influence on what happens in the country.”

Scola, however, said that this new majority will not greatly change the current political trends in the nation. “I’m not convinced we will see substantial changes.

We still have the ‘Do Nothing’ Congress in power and a President who is not up for re-election in 2016. My guess is that we will continue to see gridlock and not a lot of meaningful legislation for any of the nation’s most pressing issues.”

Harper also noted that while there is a Republican majority, the party still has to

is if people forgo that fear of being labeled as something and actually try to enact change.”

Harper also added that the process of voting, in particular the absentee ballot application, creates a barrier for a good number of voters. “We’re all college students, not all of us are from Pennsylvania or the surrounding area…Personally, I applied for a vote by mail ballot from New Jersey and I never received one, so I actually had to go home and vote, and I think that also makes it increasingly difficult. Ideally, they would make it easier to vote, but that’s not always the way things happen.”

Joe Donahue, ’15, a communication studies major, voted in the election by absentee ballot. He recommended that college students, who traditionally are away from their hometown polling stations on Election Day, apply early for a ballot to ensure they get theirs in plenty of time.

Rusnak added that the College Republicans did host a voter registration night, helping about 50 students to fill out their absentee ballot applications.

Lianette Pappaterra, ’15, a biology major, said that she did not vote in this election, but would have if St. Joe’s had done more to promote Election Day. “Honestly, St. Joe’s is like a self-contained bubble, so I didn’t even know about elections until the day of, and by then it was too late to get an absentee ballot.”

Scola said that college students and other young voters tend to not come out because they do not feel the current politics directly impact them. “Our politicians simply don’t frame issues as ‘Young American’ issues when, arguably, the younger electorate is the population who will be affected the most. Think about the economy, student loans, the housing market, the job market, gas prices, foreign policy—these are all important issues that our youngest generation of voters will have to deal with head-on, and yet they are the ones who are demobilized from participating.”

Rusnak agreed, saying that the millennial generation will soon be the ones controlling the nation. “I think it’s important because we are the future of our country, and if we don’t pay attention to these issues, one day we’re going to have to face them and we’re not going to know what to do, we’re not going to know what is going on.

So I think it’s important, and I wish that more people voted and paid attention. We are the future, and if we want to make a difference in the world, we need to know what is going on and what to do about it.”

This summer, Saint Joseph’s University opened an Office of Veteran Services. An anonymous alumni donor recently gave the office a $1 million donation to fund the development and implementation of a program to teach disabled veterans how to run their own business.

The program, called the Veteran’s Entrepreneurial Jumpstart, will be a combination of online courses, residency and campus courses, and follow-up mentorship.

The donation will be given over the course of the next five years.

Ralph Galati, director of Veteran Services, said, “The program that is designed for disabled veterans only is free of charge as per the instructions of the donor. We expect the first class in will be in May, which means the online piece will probably start in March. We are hoping to have about 15 veterans in our first class.”

This donation was made after U.S. News and World Report ranked St. Joe’s No. 2 in the North for its willingness to aid veterans in their pursuit of a college degree.

MilitaryFriendly.com also ranked St. Joe’s as a veteran-friendly university.

Galati was pleased with this ranking, as he believes it will help St. Joe’s become more popular among American service members.

“This office now is considered veteran friendly, [which] makes this campus veteran-friendly. We hope that will incent more veterans to come to school here as well as entice students who like how we treat our veterans to apply to the school,” Galati said.

There are about 150-200 veterans of different types that are enrolled on campus in some capacity. The Office of Veteran Services wants to be able to identify as many veterans and dependents on campus as it can for the new program so that they can get involved and continue to make the university an even more military-friendly institution.

Andrew Colket, program administrator for the Office of Veteran Services, has been working with student veterans to make their presence known on campus.

“We are working on establishing a Student Veteran’s of America chapter on campus,” Colket said. “It will give the student veterans an opportunity to meet a few times a month, [and it] would give us positive feedback on how we could better serve veterans on campus.”

As the program grows in number, the Office of Veteran Services has expanded to online classes, allowing even active duty members to take online classes while on the front lines.

“Priority number one is to serve our clients, which are student veterans and our families, but priority two is to leverage Saint Joseph’s University and its reputation in this geography,” Galati said.

With high military-friendly rankings and a new $1 million donation, the Office of Veterans Services is on track to provide even more resources on campus to veterans.

Community injustices Some major issues have recently come to light concerning a well-known establishment on Saint Joseph’s University’s campus. Landmark Americana Tap & Grill, a restaurant often viewed as the place to be for Quizzo with Skip Hangtime or to meet up with friends on a weeknight for a quick meal, has come under fire for several reasons, most prevalent among them being the attitudes of its general manager. Several employees have come forward to discuss the business practices being employed by the restaurant chain. Employees are being mistreated in ways that go beyond the issues associated with typical restaurant culture. For example, it is suggested that the waitresses—the majority of whom are students of the university—dress in a way that objectifies them for the sake of male customers, thus leading to sexually inappropriate comments from customers. as a part of their “walk-out policy,” servers are forced to pay out of pocket for any checks that are not paid for, despite the fact that they make minimum wage and depend heavily on tips.

Saint Joseph’s University, though it does not own the restaurant itself, does own the building in which Landmark is presently renting space. Because these problems are happening on university property, why has nothing been done yet about it? School officials may have just recently found out about the issue, but hopefully they will be taking action to stop these occurrences. The majority of Landmark employees are also St. Joe’s students who work at the restaurant in their free time; these employees are, first and foremost, students, and as such, should be protected by the university from the unjust practices to which they are being subjected.

As part of the St. Joe’s community, Landmark should be more conscious of how they treat their employees. The university provides the majority of both its business and its employees. While students may be serving on the wait staff of the restaurant, they are still students, and their academics should come first. However, the general manager is reported to have

attempted to force students to work during scheduled exam periods, rather than working around their schedules. The restaurant needs to accept the fact that these employees are doing this job secondary to school, and adapt their policies accordingly. Demeaning employees is not an effective way in which to run a business, especially one so involved with a college campus. These practices need to be amended, whether it is by the school or Landmark itself. No one should be forced to work in conditions under which they are uncomfortable, especially when the added stress of maintaining schoolwork is involved.

The issues occurring at Landmark are part of a more widespread problem of the restaurant industry, but that does not mean that we cannot do our part to eradicate these from our Jesuit campus. The students being affected by these issues taking place are a part of our community. As Hawks, it is our responsibility to care for others, and part of this is standing up against injustices taking place in our own community. Our campus, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods, is a part of a larger community; as such, we need to ensure that the community is safe for all people, regardless of their status as students or members of the surrounding community.

As a university that touts its prioritization of social justice issues, St. Joe’s needs to recognize the mistreatment of students taking place at Landmark and act to stop it. Landmark, as well, needs to recognize that its employees need to be treated with respect, regardless of whether or not they are students. As students ourselves, even we can work to reverse this issue—the next time you visit Landmark, be respectful to the staff, understand the position they are in, and be sure to leave a tip that reflects their hard work. This may be part of a larger issue surrounding restaurant and bar culture, but now that St. Joe’s has been made aware of the situation at Landmark, we have an obligation to protect the welfare of our students and take steps to rectify these issues taking place on our campus.

Why competition between women must be stopped ANGELA CHRISTALDI ’17 Opinions Editor

How many times have you heard another woman saying, “I’m not like other girls, I like (insert thing here)”? Whether that “thing” is sports or classic rock, the fact that women feel the necessity to put others down based on different interests is a byproduct of the societal pressure put on us to become better than other woman. We label ourselves as “cool” if we like something that is not considered “girly” or “feminine” by typical standards.

When did it become acceptable to put another woman down if she likes wearing pink or watching Nicholas Sparks movies?

Why do her tastes have any effect on your life? There is no reason to dislike her just because she has different interests than you.

The trope of the “cool girl” has become increasingly more prevalent as we all get older. If you were to ask any college guy, the majority of them would answer that their “ideal” girl likes to drink beer, watch sports, and doesn’t care about her makeup. She wouldn’t be upset if plans got cancelled so that he could hang out with the guys, and would just go with the flow. While there is nothing inherently

wrong with this woman, there’s just one problem: she does not exist.

Women are expected to be emotionless. If we do express our emotions in terms of disappointment or frustration, we are criticized as being too emotional, or, even worse, being asked the dreaded question of, “Why are you being such a bitch? Are you on your period or something?” No. I’m simply telling you how I feel. Women are expected to conform to the wishes of men, in terms of both appearance and personality. This, in turn, forces us against one another in a competition for male attention. It can become consuming.

We compare ourselves to one another, and to the standard that has been set for us, in a competition for recognition. We strive to be what men want—rather, what we think men want—rather than focusing on what we want. There is nothing wrong with being the woman who likes to watch football with the guys, but there is also no issue with being the woman who likes nail polish and cute, floral print dresses. In fact, there’s no problem with being both.

You can like listening to Led Zeppelin and

Taylor Swift. You can like watching hockey, but you shouldn’t feel like you have to. You can wear giant sweaters or skirts, t-shirts or jeans. Don’t let anyone else dictate your interests. You should always be exactly who you want to be rather than who you think others want you to be. Stop comparing yourself to everyone else, and focus on what makes you happy.

Everyone has different interests.

When we finally realize this and stop ridiculing others for liking different things than we do—because, believe it or not, our interests do not make us superior to others—we can accept that we are all unique and, as a result, wonderful. Too often, we compare ourselves to the women on television or in books or magazines, and attempt to emulate them in attitude or style. Why are we so often trying to change ourselves? We need to accept who we are, because only through this acceptance can we grow to be stronger and make the changes that need to be made.

Through accepting our interests and ourselves, we can accept others, thus creating the community that we need.

Two weeks ago The Hawk published an article written by Justin Russell. I was apprehensive to write this response because I will, inevitably, be categorized as a bra-burning feminist after telling you what I have to say. I found this article offensive on a couple of different levels, but what upset me the most was the outright mockery of gender inequality by Mr. Russell. I tried to hear him out, but gender inequality does exist in our society. That’s a fact.

Mr. Russell argues that the gender pay gap exists because women occupy different jobs than men. Mr. Russell is incorrect in thinking that women simply have different lifestyle choices, and therefore will make less money. The gender pay gap is because of gender, not occupation. Female financial specialists make 66 percent of what their male counterparts make, female doctors earn 71 percent, and female lawyers and judges make 82 percent, according to Claudia Goldin, a Harvard University labor economist and a leading scholar on women and the economy. She states, “There is a belief, which is just not true, that women are just in bad occupations and if we just put them in better occupations, we would solve the gender gap problem.” Rearranging women into higher-paying occupations would erase just 15 percent of the pay gap for all workers and between 30 and 35 percent for college graduates, she found.

A recent study done by Corinne Moss-Racusin, a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University, found that the gender wage gap is partly due to discrimination. She created a resume that would be used for two identical, imaginary students: one named John, and the other Jennifer. She then sent out the resumes to science professors at top, research-intensive universities in the United States. Every component of the resume was identical except the names. Ms. Moss-Racusin asked the professors to evaluate how competent this student was, how likely they would be to hire the student, how much they would pay this student, and how willing they would be to mentor the student. In every category John beat out Jennifer, many times by a large margin.

This study shows the overwhelming evidence that women are assumed to be less competent than men in fields like the sciences and mathematics. This kind of wage discrimination has nothing to do with the choices of the women attempting to enter these fields. It has everything to do with gender.

Mr. Russell has also seemed to forget what feminism means. Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men. Maybe I misinterpreted Mr. Russell’s claims, but the last time I checked, feminists are not saying that women are unintelligent or that they hate men. Fighting to close the gender wage gap is not meant to divide women against men. It serves an opportunity for men and women to come together and right a wrong. Women deserve the same pay for the same work. It’s that simple, folks.

The truth is, women are treated differently than men in our society. Women in America are underestimated, underrepresented, and underpaid. Women make up more than half of full-time undergraduates in college and 40 percent of our nation’s breadwinners, yet as of January 2014, there are 79 female representatives in U.S. congress (that’s only 18 percent). Mr. Russell is simply ill-informed on the topic of gender inequality and uses misguiding information. The statistics are overwhelming in showing that the gender wage gap does exist, whether Mr. Russell chooses to believe them or not. Equal work deserves equal pay. That’s a fact.

Election results: What a Republican Senate means for the nation

The beginning of November is, as everyone knows, election time. For weeks, political commercials are run almost constantly on both television and radio. Every politician promises some new change in hopes of getting voters on their side, but these promises are rarely ever kept.

This past week’s elections brought about a change to not only local governments, but also to the face of the national government itself: 52 percent of the newly elected Senators, as well as 244 out of 427 members of the House of Representatives, are Republicans. This great of a majority representation of the GOP has not been seen in several years.

The Republican Party now dominates the government, as opposed to the more balanced way things had previously been.

Despite the massive imbalance currently in place, there have been several strides forward made by the Democratic Party, especially in terms of the reproductive rights movement. Several states have refuted the idea of “personhood,” which would have given full constitutional rights to unborn fetuses, thus taking away the autonomy of

the women who are pregnant; under these conditions, having an abortion would be considered murder. One of the main points of contention between the Democratic and Republican Parties is the debate of reproductive rights for women: most right-wing politicians and their supporters view the moment of conception as the beginning of a human life, and are vehemently opposed to abortion, while some Democrats are more inclined to allow women the right to choose.

President Obama is currently in his second term as president. Since his first election, he has received seemingly unending criticism for not being able to pass any motions to bring about the change that he promised during his campaigns. This is largely due to the fact that the Republican members of Senate had blocked or vetoed any potential changes. However, following Tuesday’s election, Reince Priebus, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, stated that the new Party members of the Senate would be willing to work with the President. This cooperation, if it works out, could either lead to productive mea-

sures being taken, or a reversal of the progress that has been made thus far. Despite historic arguments between the two parties—does anyone remember the government shutdown?—this compromise could bring about new progress for the country.

The two parties have vastly different views: the Democrats are attempting sociopolitical reforms, while Republicans are pushing for action in trade and taxes.

A Republican-ruled Senate seems like a daunting prospect. Their goals tend to be oriented toward the upper classes, rather than focusing on bringing about equality.

Their current goals, however, seem to be a bit more liberal-oriented than they have been historically. Tax reform, one of their main platforms, would create more jobs and improve infrastructure, while focus on trade would be an issue that unites the Obama administration and the Republican Senate. However, there are still points of contention between the two: Republicans are working to repeal the Affordable Care Act, despite the fact that it has been signed into law.

If the two parties can reach an agree-

ment on anything, hopefully the compromises will move our government forward.

While progress has been made over the course of the past few years—for example, in marriage equality—there are still several steps that need to be taken that do not necessarily seem to be in conjunction with the Republican Party. Gender inequality, unfortunately, is still an issue that is faced every day. Educational inequality, especially in cities, is undoubtedly one of the largest issues faced by the nation. Unemployment, though it has reached one of the lowest rates in years, is still remarkably high. These are the types of issues that need to be fixed, and are the issues that likely will not be focused on with a conservative majority in power.

While the reassurances of compromise are somewhat comforting, the question is still raised: Will there actually be any change? Even in recent history, stalemates have been reached—again, recall the government shutdown—when neither side got their way. Acting like children is no way to run a nation. Hopefully both parties will be able to cooperate, and as a nation, we will be able to make progress.

‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’

Ending the reign of planning There seems to be a general consensus among the student population that registration is one of the most stressful events of the semester. There is meticulous planning involved in trying to craft the perfect schedule, followed by extreme amounts of angst and frustration when all the classes we wanted are taken. Many students make appointments with advisors to talk about their future. Questions arise, such as: Do you want to study abroad? Do you want to do a year of service? Do you want to pursue another degree after you finish your undergraduate work? And my least favorite of them all: Do you know what career you want to pursue? There is pressure put on us to have it all figured out.

We are forced to plan ahead. When we get to college, there is a pressing need to figure out what our career aspirations are and then choose a major that can help us achieve this goal. We are asked to pick a field of study at the ages of 18 to 20 years old, and this academic field will, to some degree, dictate what it is that we do later in life. We are told that our undergraduate education lays the foundation for our future. That, to me, is an extremely daunting thought.

As college students, we deal with the expectation that during these four years, we will figure out the rest of our lives. There is a need to always be thinking two steps ahead. Whatever happened to living life and going with the flow? What happened to going out and gauging the world around us and living in the present moment? Be-

cause we feel pressure to have life figured out when we’ve really just started living, this option is completely eliminated.

By planning every detail of our futures, we may be missing out on great opportunities that don’t necessarily fit in with our carefully formulated goals. Maybe these missed opportunities come in the form of a class that doesn’t fit in with our schedule or a club that conflicts with our major’s honors society. But what if that class or that club was a chance for you to have an epiphany about what it is that you want to do with your life?

Yes, it is good to have some basic ideas about what it is that you want to do. We all have a mental picture of what we hope our future lives will look like—it could be anything from a job on Wall Street, to being a neurosurgeon, to teaching third grade.

While it is good to work towards something and take steps toward our goals, we should not be too rigid in our plans. We need to be open to the idea of flexibility; it is, after all, a part of life.

I am a strong believer in the expression, “Everything happens for a reason.”

Our plans change because we change; these changes take place so that our futures can be better suited to the person that we have become. We have a tendency to constantly look ahead, trying to control our futures.

Now is not the time to decide where we want to send our kids to high school, or if we want to retire in Florida or not. It is not the time to figure out if we want a spring or summer wedding, or which Fortune 500

company we are going to work for. We should be focusing on things that make us happy right now rather than doing things that we only kind of like because we believe they will ensure our success in the long run.

The great philosopher Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” So enjoy the here and now and find out what it is that you truly love instead of following some calculated plan. We should see where life takes us, instead of seeing where we can take life.

Death with dignity A right for autonomy BRIAN RADERMACHER ’16 Hawk Staff

I would like to preface this column with an acknowledgement of solidarity toward those suffering from or those with loved ones who are suffering from terminal illness. This column is not meant to question anyone’s decisions or trivialize any daily suffering. I only wish to address the ethical debate of voluntary euthanasia.

Brittany Maynard has brought national attention to Death with Dignity Laws and the issue of voluntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia is a legal process through which a terminally ill patient can choose to receive a lethal dose of medication. The process is designed to spare the patient days or even months of pain and suffering. Voluntary euthanasia sparks an interesting ethical debate.

Should people have the right to end their life early if their death is inevitable and imminent due to disease?

Those who are opposed to voluntary euthanasia base their stance on two key arguments. One argument is that by submitting to voluntary euthanasia, a patient is denying their friends and family the opportunity to create additionally lasting memories. Another argument is that the patient could be denying a spouse the right to care for a sick loved one. While these arguments might help to comfort loved ones and make the process of death easier, both of

these arguments are flawed. Neither addresses the crux of the ethical dilemma. They both ignore the patient’s right to bodily autonomy.

Regrettably, yet undoubtedly, at some point in the terminal illness process, a patient will lose their autonomy. However, at what point does the patient have the right to choose to end his or her life?

When they can no longer control their body for daily functions?

When they are put on life support? I do not have the answers to these questions, and I am not foolish enough to think I have the authority to answer them for anyone other than myself.

What I do know, however, is that humans are defined by their autonomy. The unique combination of rational thought and free will that results in the capacity to make choices is an integral part of the human identity. By choosing voluntary euthanasia, a patient is choosing to die with their autonomy intact. If his or her final act of autonomy is to die with it, I do not believe anyone should find fault with that. I view the decision as a mark of incredible bravery, equal to fighting for life as long as possible. While voluntary euthanasia is not necessarily a solution for everyone, criticizing its ethics, at least in my opinion, is wrong.

A stand against abuse Why rape culture isn’t funny JAMIE PETRAGNANI ’17 Hawk Staff Lena Dunham, creator, writer, and star of the HBO series “Girls,” is often viewed as an idol for American women. She is a strong woman, unashamed of her body shape and unafraid of expressing her opinions. She possesses a comical charm that has made her a major success at the young age of 28. Unfortunately, Dunham has recently made some incredibly offensive arguments that have gotten her into quite a bit of trouble.

Dunham recently released her memoir “Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s ‘Learned,’” a book which had fans of the quirky star waiting on the edges of their seats. There is no denying that Dunham has talent as a writer, as “Girls” is one of the most financially successful and critically acclaimed series on HBO, so it was assumed that the book would do well. However, Dunham made some controversial points in her memoir, which have a lot of people seeing red.

While recounting moments from her childhood, Dunham admitted to bribing her younger sister, Grace, with candy for kisses and “gently spreading open her legs out of curiosity.” Naturally, many were concerned with Dunham’s treatment of her younger sister, viewing the behavior as inappropriate and bordering on abuse.

Dunham even admitted that she would use similar tactics to those used by sexual predators to coerce her sister into these acts. Even more appalling was Dunham’s reaction to the responses of critics.

When Dunham released a statement to Time Magazine, she apologized for her “comic” use of the term “sexual predator,” which are two terms that should never be placed in the same sentence together. It is bad enough that Dunham admitted to being inappropriate with her sister, but trying to make sexual abuse funny is disgusting.

No survivor of sexual abuse is ever going to find Dunham’s remarks amusing. Child abuse is a horrific reality of our society, and should never be associated with comedy. Sexual assault is one of the worst forms of torture that humans can inflict upon one an-

other; it takes the most personal, intimate act that one can perform and makes it terrifying. Dunham was supposed to be the symbol of a modern person, working towards a more open and expressive world, but comments like these just reveal her ignorance.

Dunham made things even worse for herself when she took to her Twitter account to battle it out with her critics. She claimed that readers were “twisting her words,” and that others had stories from their childhoods that they would rather not share as well. This may be true, but how many of these stories consist of inappropriate behavior towards a seven-year-old? All children are curious about sexuality, and this should not be penalized. Dunham should not be criticized about what she did when she was a child, or for being stupid enough to put it in print with her name attached to it forever. What she should be penalized for is her reaction to the negative response she has received.

Nothing says “I’m an immature child who shouldn’t be taken seriously” like making jokes about child abuse and fighting your battles on Twitter. In another act of immaturity, Dunham has “postponed” the remainder of the dates on her book tour in the aftermath of recent controversy. Rather than choosing to stand by her work and continuing to meet with the fans who support her, she has instead began to cut her losses and retreat from the spotlight.

A wise career move, but it shines a bit of a negative light on her already damaged character. What is next for the writer is unknown.

She will no doubt be dealing with the aftermath of this scandal over the course of the next six months, which could have a serious effect on “Girls” and those associated with it. While it is disappointing that an influential figure in pop culture has shown this insensitivity towards an incredibly serious issue, hopefully others will learn from Dunham’s mistake and realize that sexual assault is nothing to laugh about.

‘Science rules!’

Philadelphia has its share of interesting sites and museums. From the Mummers Museum to the Franklin Institute, all interests have their own special niche. One place not so frequently visited by the masses is Drexel’s Academy of Natural Sciences.

Located in Logan Circle, next door to the Franklin Institute and diagonal from the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, the Academy of Natural Sciences is a unique place to explore on a lazy Sunday.

The Academy was founded in 1812 and opened to the public in 1828 with the goal of researching and spreading knowledge of public engagement with the natural world to the citizens of America. Through the Academy, many great expeditions were made possible around the globe, each bringing all sorts of specimens from around the world to one central location. From the Arctic to the Sahara, a variety of fascinating and interesting exhibits have flowed through the museum doors for over 200 hundred years.

Today, the Academy still does its part in the world of science by teaching those interested in learning more about the natural world of the United States beyond. In addition to education, the Academy also continues to conduct research in various fields such as botany and paleontology, as well as promoting environmental research and conservation.

If research and data is not your thing, don’t worry. The Academy has a number of interesting exhibits to keep you intrigued and entertained. Inside the museum, there are dozens of dioramas of different animal species from throughout the world. From the Arctic tundra to the Serengeti, you will see life-like renditions of nature’s beasts in their natural habitats, as well as read up on a few fun facts about them.

The butterfly room is also a must-see. This is a room that is filled with butterflies from around the world, in various states of hatching, living, and thriving in a controlled environment.

The room is also a nice place to warm up in the winter. The temperature is set to 80 degrees yearround so that the specimens can live as comfortably as possible.

One of the coolest parts of the academy is Dinosaur Hall. This is the first and last exhibit you will see when entering and leaving the academy. Dinosaur Hall has the bones of more than 30 creatures from the Mesozoic period, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex, towering at approximately 42 feet long and over 12 feet high.

With over 14 exhibits, some constant and others changing out periodically, it is hard not to be intrigued or uninterested by what lies in the natural world around you. If you are ever in Center City and have some time to kill, make sure to stop by the Academy of Natural Sciences.

You’ll definitely have a good time, not only because of the student discount, but also because, in the words of Bill Nye the Science Guy, “Science rules!”

TAYLOR SWIFT’S CROSS INTO POP

Parachute lands on Hawk Hill KELLY WITTMAN ’17 Hawk Staff The indie-rock band Parachute performed at Saint Joseph’s University this past Saturday. The band’s last show of the year was enjoyed by St. Joe’s students at the Perch, which provided an intimate setting for a convenient performance right on campus.

Parachute’s slow-tempo tunes created a relaxed vibe in the crowd as lead singer Will Anderson’s vocals echoed throughout the room. The band performed songs from their debut album, “Losing Sleep,” released in 2009, as well as songs from their latest project, “Overnight.” In a tribute to today’s pop sensations, Parachute surprised the audience with a few covers, including Ariana Grande’s chart topper, “Problem.” The song was stripped of its heavy pop beat and instead given the low-key charm Parachute is known for. For all of the couples in the room, the band sang the romantic “Forever and Always,” followed by the contagious, upbeat track, “Can’t Help.”

Having previously performed in major venues, including a show for Bill Clinton earlier this year, Parachute took advantage of the smaller crowd and engaged the audience throughout the entire show. Anderson left his spot on stage to shake hands with the students and also posed for numerous selfies post-performance. Johnny Stubblefield, the band’s drummer, even gave away his drumsticks to some of the fans.

Between songs, Anderson shared stories of the band’s past performances and their road to mainstream success. Students said that Parachute’s down-to-earth vibe made them feel like they got to know the band on a personal level.

According to concert attendee Rebecca Rosati, ’17, “They were very personal and easy-going. Even if you didn’t know all of the words, you got caught up in the relaxed mood of each song.”

The evening was wrapped up with “She Is Love,” the song that became the band’s ticket to Billboard recognition back in 2009. Parachute ended the show by announcing the release of another album later this year, in which fans will hear the band’s same authentic style, unchanged by the Hollywood music industry.

MEGAN BURNS ’17 Hawk Staff Oct. 27 was an important day for Taylor Swift fans. Swift released her highly anticipated fifth album, “1989,” to the excitement of millions around the world. The album portrays a new side of Swift, specifically due to the fact that this album has a completely new sound. Swift has ditched her previous country-pop genre for exclusively pop tracks. Naturally, fans have been eagerly awaiting the new sound of Swift’s album.

Taylor Swift was born in 1989 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, only about an hour away from Saint Joseph’s University. Swift states that much of her inspiration for this new album comes from the music of the year in which she was born. Swift stated in an article for Rolling Stone, “It was a very experimental time in pop music. People realized songs didn’t have to be this standard ‘drums-guitar-bass-whatever.’ We can make a song with synths and a drum pad.

We can do group vocals the entire song.

We can do so many different things. And I think what you saw happening with music was also happening in our culture, where people were just wearing whatever crazy colors they wanted to, because why not?”

Swift’s pop sound on this album is inspired by different music, places, and experiences. Her new home of New York City has obviously held great inspiration for this album, which is made evident in the first track, “Welcome to New York.” Swift’s sound has undoubtedly changed since her first self-titled album released back in 2006.

Since her debut in 2006, Swift has released a total of five albums, and it is impossible to deny the fact that Taylor Swift has shaken up the music world. She has changed the music industry as a young, female country artist, which was an uncommon combination in the early 2000s.

Fast-forward eight years, and Swift’s album “1989” has become the fastest selling record in 12 years. Within the first week of its release, “1989” sold 1.287 million copies.

Previously, Eminem held this honor when his album, “The Eminem Show,” sold over 1.3 million copies during its second week on the charts in June of 2002. This new status as the fastest selling artist has made Swift the only musician to go platinum in 2014 thus far. The Guardian also recently released statistics stating that Swift was responsible for 22 percent of album sales in

the United States between the album’s release date of Oct. 27 and Nov. 2.

Although Swift continues to maintain an enormous fan base, she gained media attention once again shortly after releasing “1989” by removing all of her music from the music streaming site Spotify. This is a major setback for Spotify, as Swift is one of the most popular artists on the site, and the absence of her music will be detrimental to users. Spotify released a statement which included a play on Swift’s popular lyrics, “Taylor, we were both young when we first saw you, but now there’s more than 40 million of us who want you to stay, stay, stay.

It’s a love story, baby just say, ‘Yes.’” Only time will tell if Swift will eventually put her music back on Spotify, or if she will require her fans to purchase her albums in order to listen to her music. Regardless, “1989” has broken new records, and Swift has already announced her 2015 world tour. Whether you’re a fan of the young star or not, Swift is taking the music industry by storm, and it doesn’t look like she plans on stopping any time soon.

Electric Factory goes down Ocean Avenue MICHAEL BERGAMINI ’16 Hawk Staff On Monday, Nov. 3, the Yellowcard and Memphis May Fire co-headlined tour came to Philadelphia’s Electric Factory in Center City. Both bands were eager for this tour, as Memphis May Fire was fresh off the tour for their latest album, “Unconditional,” and Yellowcard spent the summer finishing up their four week-old album, “Lift A Sail,” as well as playing the 20th Annual Vans Warped Tour.

The opening act included an energetic performance from Emarosa, whose lead singer, Bradley Scott Walden, sang half of the band’s set in the middle of the crowd. Walden’s performance also involved a dive off of the stage into the back of the barricade, and a quick exit through the back of the building to stay at the merchandise table through the swarm of people. Needless to say, Walden’s performance succeeded in prepping the crowd for Yellowcard’s and Memphis May Fire’s stage debuts.

Memphis May Fire opened with their energetic lead single, “No Ordinary Love,” from their latest album. Lead singer Matty Mullins frequently discussed his spirituality throughout the performance and how his values have evolved to influence the music that Memphis May Fire creates. Mullins also talked about the opposition the band received from record labels while trying to produce this show in conjunction with Yellowcard, because Yellowcard is a pop-punk, alternative rock band while Memphis May Fire is geared more toward metalcore. However, both bands were grateful for the longtime support of their respective fans, claiming that the fans were the reason that this tour was a success.

Yellowcard closed out the show the only way they know how— with both beautiful violin playing and rocking guitar. They began their set with the violin solo “Convocation” and then transitioned into “Transmission Home.” Their newest album has a heavier feel that differs from their previous music, yet still has the power to captivate their audience. Lead singer Ryan Key always has much to say

during the band’s sets, and this show was no different. Key shared how much the band truly looks forward to each new tour, but they are always most excited to play the Electric Factory. According to Key, the venue has basically become a second home for the band.

In 2004, Yellowcard released a live DVD entitled “Beyond Ocean Avenue” that was filmed at their concert at the Electric Factory, so this venue obviously holds a special place in their hearts.

Yellowcard’s most recent album release, “Lift A Sail,” hit stores on Oct. 7. Key stressed how important this record has been for the band, because all four of the band members have had some personal struggles in the past few years. This album, Key said, is a testament that one can overcome any obstacle that life might offer.

Most notably, violinist Sean Mackin has been battling thyroid cancer since December 2011.

Yellowcard closed their set with their smash hit from 2003, “Ocean Avenue,” and exited the stage. After cheering and chanting from the crowd, Key came back to the stage to perform a solo piano ballad entitled “California.” During a heartfelt intro, Key discussed how he wrote this song for his wife, a Russian snowboarder, who was training for the Olympics when an injury prevented her from competing. She was undergoing rehabilitation in Denver, and her only wish was to go back to the shores of California, which Key said were her favorite place in the world. Sentimental and lyrically beautiful, the song was a perfect encore to a fantastic set.

The Electric Factory has certainly had a memorable show last week. Memphis May Fire and Yellowcard’s co-headlined tour was a perfect example of two different types of music coming together to create a show that won’t soon be forgotten by fans.

Chipotle vs. Qdoba HALEY FISCHER ’17 Hawk Staff

Taquito? Burrito? Quesarrito? These and so many other “-itos” contribute to what completes a typical Mexican restaurant menu. But what do you do when you’re having an extreme craving for Mexican food but don’t want to go to a sit-down restaurant? You go for on-the-go, easy, pickup food. Now the real question is: Chipotle or Qdoba?

Chipotle, which first opened in 1993, is a traditional Mexican grill, featuring all-natural food and ingredients.

Starting in 2000, Chipotle stated their mission of serving 100 percent naturally raised pork, beef, and chicken. Since then, Chipotle made it their goal to serve their customers with the healthiest options, even using zero trans fat frying oil. Chipotle is not only known for their clean and organic food options, but also for their family-based and clean environment.

Qdoba, first named Zuma Fresh Mexican Grill, was

opened in 1995 in Denver, Colorado. Qdoba is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jack in the Box, a fast-food chain based in California. Qdoba, with their featured item of Mexican gumbo, is also a traditional Mexican-style restaurant with burritos made “San Diego-style,” So Hawks, what’s the verdict? Qdoba or Chipotle?

Considering the convenient location of both Chipotle and Qdoba in regards to Saint Joseph’s University’s campus, either seems like a good option. Do people prefer Chipotle because it presents its customers with organic food? On the other hand, is Qdoba more appealing because it provides free queso and guacamole extras? I asked around campus to see what my fellow Hawks prefer.

While circulating around St. Joe’s inquiring about Mexican food, I encountered a variety of answers; however, most people seemed to prefer Chipotle. When asking

Megan Thompson, ’15, about her preference, she said, “I choose Chipotle, always. The food seems fresher and it’s a cleaner place.”

Similarly, Cami Redfern, ’16, reported, “I like Chipotle better. It’s fresher and tastes better. They have better customer service.”

I found many other responses just like this one to support Chipotle. Katherine Ricchini, ’17, explained her love of Chipotle by saying, “I prefer Chipotle because the food seems fresher and I like the option of having a burrito bowl. It seems like a salad, which makes me feel like I’m eating healthier. I love the environment of Chipotle more.”

Courtney’s Corner COURNTEY NABUA ’17 Hawk Staff Craving some pasta but don’t feel like walking down to Campion and waiting in line? Problem solved! Here are three easy recipes to make pasta in your room that is sure to satisfy any craving.

PRESTO PASTA

DORM-MADE MAC ‘N’ CHEESE

VEGGIE PASTA

No-cook lasagna noodles Spaghetti sauce Cheese

Choice of pasta ½ cup of water ¼ cup milk ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Choice of pasta ½ cup water Broccoli Tomatoes Salt and pepper Chicken broth

1. Cover the bottom of a bowl with lasagna noodles.

2. Layer in the sauce and the cheese.

3. Heat this in the microwave for 3 min utes.

4. Continue layering the noodles, sauce, and cheese, making sure to heat for another 2 minutes after adding every layer. This will ensure that all of the ingredients are being adequately heated.

1. Pour the water and pasta into a mug or bowl. Microwave this for 2 minutes, then stir.

2. Repeat the heating process 1-2 more times, being sure to stir between each 2-minute heating interval. Continue until the pasta is fully cooked. A dash of water can be added to help cook the pasta.

3. Once cooked, immediately add the milk and cheese and stir in evenly.

4. Microwave for another minute and enjoy!

1. Fill a mug or bowl with desired amount of pasta. Add ½ cup of water. Add a splash or two more if your container is larger than a mug or small bowl.

2. Microwave the pasta and water in 2-minute intervals 2-3 times until pasta is cooked. Be sure to stir between each 2-minute interval.

3. In another mug or bowl, microwave chicken broth for 2-3 minutes.

4. On a plate, heat the broccoli and toma toes. Cut up the vegetables into bite sized pieces.

5. Combine all ingredients and add in the salt and pepper to taste.

FRANKI RUDNESKY ’18 Hawk Staff With the Halloween season now over, many are wondering what to do with all their leftover chocolate. Why not eat it? Although chocolate is often grouped with unhealthy candies and snacks, countless studies have proven that dark chocolate, in moderation, actually has numerous health benefits.

Besides tasting sweet and rich, chocolate has been shown to have cardiovascular benefits. According to Women’s Health Magazine’s website, a study of over 31,000 women was done to track the effects of dark chocolate on health. It was found that women who ate one to two servings of dark chocolate each week were one-third less likely to be at risk for heart failure. Another study in Germany found that those who consumed a square of dark chocolate each day had lower blood pressure and a 39 percent reduced risk of heart attack and stroke than those that did not consume dark chocolate. This is due to antioxidant compounds found in chocolate known as flavonoids, which increase flexibility in veins and arteries. In fact, one chocolate bar has five times the flavonoids of an apple.

Chocolate can also aid in weight loss, because it can help one feel more full. Dark chocolate, in particular, is rich in fiber, helping to keep people full so they will then

not feel the need to eat as much. Dark chocolate also reduces cravings for sweet, salty, and fatty foods. Contrary to the belief that chocolate can cause breakouts, dark chocolate is actually very good for the skin. The flavonoids in dark chocolate give some protection against UV damage from sun exposure. In fact, researchers in London found that after three months of eating chocolate with high levels of flavonoids, people’s skin took twice as long to show sunburn.

Additionally, chocolate can actually work to prevent diabetes. An Italian study found that people who ate one dark chocolate candy bar each day for 15 days had a huge drop in potential for insulin resistance. Claudio Ferri, M.D., the lead researcher of the study, said, “Flavonoids increase nitric oxide production and that helps control insulin sensitivity.”

The cocoa in chocolate is known to have anti-clotting and blood-thinning properties that work like aspirin. This helps to improve blood flow and circulation. Studies have also shown that chocolate can aid in cough relief almost as well as codeine, because it contains theobromine. Theobromine is a chemical that may suppress the vagus nerve in the brain, which triggers coughing. Codeine, which is

the medicine usually used to treat coughing, makes people feel tired and dull, but chocolate has none of these negative side effects.

In fact, chocolate has been known to improve one’s mood. It also has been proven to reduce stress. A recent study found that people who had originally rated themselves as very stressed had much lower levels of stress hormones after they had eaten chocolate every day for two weeks. Chocolate contains flavanols, which boost blood flow to the brain, causing people to feel more alert and awake. The increase of blood flow to the brain caused by flavanols may also increase the flow of blood to the retina, which could boost vision.

The secret behind chocolate’s superpowers is also the main source of its chocolate taste: cacao. This little bean is jam-packed with healthy chemicals that lead to all these incredible health benefits. To make the actual chocolate, though, a few less healthy things are added, such as milk, sugar, and butter. So stick to healthier chocolates with high cacao content – at least 70 percent – and limit yourself to around four chocolate bars each week. As long as it is snacked on smartly, chocolate is arguably the best-tasting superfood around.

For sushi lovers, Hai Street Kitchen & Co. is an interesting restaurant, especially in terms of their unique signature dish, known as the “sushi burrito.” This past Friday, a friend and I got ourselves ready to try these famous sushi burritos that we had heard so much about.

For those who have not heard of this trendy little spot, Hai Street Kitchen is a restaurant in Center City that has a style similar to Chipotle. It is located on South 18th Street. The menu allows customers to first choose either a roll or a bowl. They offer signature combinations, but customers can also create a custom combination from scratch. I was not sure what to expect from the restaurant; I had heard a lot about it from friends, but was still skeptical of the idea of a sushi burrito. I ordered the “crunch roll,” which has shrimp tempura, spicy mayo, romaine, cucumber, pickled jicama, and grilled zucchini. I got brown rice in the roll instead of white, and added wasabi guacamole that is 99 cents extra (it really is just like Chipotle!). Other topping options included peanuts, fried garlic, or fried shallots. I also got sweet green tea to drink.

The sweet green tea was subpar, and I definitely would not get it again. However, the burrito lived up to all we had heard about it and more, exceeding our expectations. The ingredients are fresh and nothing tasted like it had been sitting out for a long period of time. It was so delicious to have all the tastes together, and it was much more filling than expected. The best thing about it all was we walked out full, but neither us of felt so full that it was uncomfortable. Normally sushi for dinner is not very filling, but this was the perfect balance!

The service at the restaurant was just as it should be.

The employees were nice and answered all of our questions —and we had a lot. Hai Street Kitchen was not what we expected when we walked in the doors. It looked just like Chipotle, with all of the options to choose from laid out right in front of us and the explanations of the menu items above for us to read. The restaurant was not busy at the time, but the employees were still fast, and we did not have to wait too long. The pricing was as much as a burrito at Chipotle, with my order coming out to $12 for my burrito and my drink.

The environment of the restaurant was minimalist, and again, not what I expected. There were few options for seating, so beware if you go at a busy time—there may be nowhere to sit. I expected the decor to be a bit more exciting. Everyone talked up the restaurant, and the food definitely lived up to what I heard, but the inside was somehow lacking. I was lucky I got to the restaurant at the time I did, because right after we sat down, a flood of about 10 people walked in. This only matters because the seating is so limited, and I wanted to get the full experience and eat at the restaurant.

Ultimately, I would say that Hai Street Kitchen is definitely a spot to try. The food was exceptional and left me wanting to try more. The limited seating is not something that should keep you from trying this delicious restaurant.

I recommend that anyone to check it out! The food was delicious and the service was quick. What more can you ask for in a Friday night dinner?

Kindness is a value that is evident all around our campus here at Saint Joseph’s University. Kindness is apparent through our daily interactions with each other; you can always count on someone to offer a helping hand or hold the door open for you. That we have a “kind campus” is important, not just for the St. Joe’s community, but also because it has been proven that performing random acts of kindness can be beneficial to your health.

Research shows that doing good deeds for other people can cause socially anxious people, or just people in general, to feel more comfortable in difficult situations and ultimately make them feel better. According to David R. Hamilton, Ph.D, author of “Why Kindness is Good for You,” there are five main positive side effects of kindness.

Kindness makes us happier. Doing something kind for someone else makes us feel good. It gives us a sense of hope and it gives us the feeling that we are doing the right thing. Known as “helper’s high,” kindness can cause elevated levels of the brain’s natural versions of morphine and heroin, giving us a natural high.

Kindness gives us healthier hearts.

A feeling of emotional warmth often complements doing good deeds. This feeling

Kindness slows aging. The same hormone, oxytocin, has the ability to slow down signs of physical aging as well, because it works to decrease levels of inflammation in our cardiovascular system. Thus, the key to staying young forever – or as long as possible – can be linked to acts of

kindness.

Kindness makes for better relationships. Let’s face it—who doesn’t love it when someone is randomly kind to them?

Or when a girl in one of your classes complements the outfit you spent 30 minutes putting together? An act of kindness can truly brighten someone’s day. It can also be the start of long-lasting friendships. On a more scientific level, kindness reduces the emotional distance between people, which causes them to bond and make connections. This reasoning can even go as far as genetics; we are bound by kindness. It’s

been shown by our evolutionary ancestors, who had to help and collaborate with one another in order to survive.

Kindness is contagious. The word “contagious” is best suited to kindness than any other word. Kindness can be inspiring as a result of its “pay it forward” mindset. Studies have shown that kindness can create a snowball effect, each participant gathering increasing amounts of people to inspire every time they perform a kind act.

These five results of kindness are just a small taste of positive side effects that kindness can have on a person or group of people.

There are many different ways to be kind. Anywhere can be practiced anywhere, from our campus to Philadelphia to the local Target. It could be something as easy as saying “bless you” when you hear someone sneeze, or something as specific as putting change into a parking meter so that the next person who parks there gets a free spot. No act of kindness is too big or too small, and no act of kindness is ever unneeded.

Learn to lift with Ariana Palma: Don’t cheat your chest It is easy for men to get motivated to train their chest; I have not met a guy that does not love chest day. I can’t blame them—having a well-built chest is great component for a strong and robust upper body. However, many women lack the desire or strength to train their chest. I’ll be honest; in the past, I neglected training my chest for a long time. I have come to realize that failing to train your chest is just like failing to train any other major muscle group. An important message for the ladies reading this: Although it may not be your muscle group of choice, your chest is a significant portion of your upper body, and ignoring chest exercises will hinder your overall performance in the gym. A well-developed chest not only gives you functional strength, but it helps lift and fill out the appearance of the upper body for both men and women.

There are two muscles that make up the chest: the pectoralis major and the pectoralis minor. They work together to perform the essential functions of the chest,

which include the ability to move your arms up and down at your sides, keeping your arms in place at resting position, and pulling your arms forward and down. The strength of your chest is undoubtedly important, and so are the methods in which you train it.

The basic press and fly movements are the foundation of many chest workouts. I prefer using dumbbells for a greater range of motion. I enjoy the independence of each arm – it makes the exercise more difficult and forces you to have more control over the weight. Barbell bench press is a commonly preferred and highly effective method as well. I always incorporate cable exercises to build strength and burn out the chest from all angles.

Though there are two major muscles of the chest, the muscles should be broken up into three parts when being trained. The upper, middle, and lower portions of the chest are all each stimulated by changing the angle at which you execute any chest exercise. The upper chest is best trained

from exercises done on a 45-degree incline bench. Set your bench at this angle when you perform incline dumbbell bench press or incline barbell bench press for a great upper chest work out. The middle chest is best stimulated from flat bench exercises.

Lastly, the lower chest should be trained on a 45-degree decline bench. Use a bench in this decline position when performing decline barbell press and dumbbell bench press for a powerful lower chest exercise.

Before I continue, let me just say, forget the ego, forget the numbers, and focus on overall quality development and strength.

Whenever I train my chest, I usually recommend four to five working sets and an additional drop-set or burnout set. Sets one and two should be 12 repetitions, set three for 10 repetitions, and sets four and five should have eight to six repetitions.

The final set can be a burnout in which you chose an easily manageable weight and aim for as many repetitions as possible until muscle failure. It is important to note that these sets have higher reps, which means

maxing your weight is not the goal. The chest muscles respond well to low repetition sets as well, whether you are a beginner or advanced lifter.

What is important to remember are the three different angles at which the chest should be stimulated. Change the angle of your bench from decline, flat, and incline to ensure a complete chest work out. Additionally, from a professional viewpoint, it is more impressive to see an individual execute an exercise with total control and perfect form than an individual who is pushing weight for numbers. You can easily tell the difference – trust me! Be smart and focus on form and the squeeze. The chest is an essential muscle group; you don’t want to forget it! Make sure you remember challenge your chest, get up and train!

ROAD TO RECOVERY

Jordan Strode looks to return after consecutive ACL injuries

SARAH PANETTA ’16 Special to the Hawk Many miles from her hometown of Harrisburg, North Carolina, Jordan Strode, now a junior, was eager to begin her collegiate basketball career. A small school with a family-oriented atmosphere as well as friendly and committed coaches, Saint Joseph’s University had everything Strode wanted. Only a couple of months into her freshman year, that dream disappeared.

A few days after her collegiate debut on Nov. 25, 2012, Strode went up for a routine layup during practice. As she came down with the ball, landing in a jump stop against a teammate, Strode felt her knee pop.

Cindy Griffin is entering her 14th season as head coach of the women’s basketball team at St. Joe’s. She was present for Strode’s accident on the court.

“I’ve suffered that same injury, so I knew the way she went down, I knew it was not good,” Griffin said.

An MRI would later reveal that Strode had torn both her ACL and meniscus.

“I felt like it was the end of the world,” Strode said.

Strode’s injury prevented her from earning a spot on the team as a freshman.

“We had a lot of upperclassmen that had experience and had playing time, but the caliber player that Jordan is and was at that time she definitely would have gotten a lot of playing time. Especially defensively, we weren’t that strong defensively. Jordan is one of the best defenders that I’ve ever played against,” said senior captain and teammate Natasha Cloud.

Strode missed the majority of the 2012-2013 season. While adjusting to a new school and life without playing basketball, Strode said she was comforted by the fact that she could redshirt because her injury came early in the season.

Fast-forward 10 months to September of the 20132014 season. The day before Strode was scheduled to receive clearance, history found a way to repeat itself.

Strode re-tore her ACL and meniscus in the same knee as she pivoted while running down the court.

Devastated by another season-ending injury, Strode felt defeated, but said, “I had to get through it, it is what it is.”

Cloud is one of Strode’s roommates and witnessed Strode’s rehab after her first injury and the pain of the second.

“When she went down all of us knew it happened again. She was crying; a lot of us were crying because we’re not only teammates, we’re family members,” Cloud said. “This was the second time, we wanted her to be able to play.”

Upon hearing the news of Strode’s re-injury, Griffin said, “I felt so bad for Jordan. I felt like she was just starting to get back and get into her own rhythm.”

Sal Capone, an athletic trainer in sports medicine, said that it is not rare to experience multiple injuries to the same knee. Usually the first repair is successful, but there are times when an athlete can re-tear the repair. “[Strode] is very composed; even-keeled demeanor. Even now with the little problems she’s having, she comes in not too upset,” Capone said.

takes the athlete about 12 months to feel fully recovered.

“To come back from two major surgeries within two years, I mean, she has a strong commitment to playing basketball here at St. Joe’s. To push through it, that takes a lot. It’s not an easy process to come back from one ACL; to go through two, that takes a strong commitment,” Capone said.

Despite her injuries, Strode is always upbeat and cheering on her teammates.

“Jordan always puts the team first and her emotions second,” Cloud said.

Strode struggled with the second injury.

However, she said, “I hope I can get through it, be pain free, not worry about my knee, and contribute to the team as much as I can.”

Strode said that she has been able to overcome these injuries with the encouragement and support of her parents, coaches, athletic trainers, and teammates.

“No matter what happens, this injury, this sport, this life that we live doesn’t define you. Basketball doesn’t define who you are,” Cloud said. “We’re hoping for the best, but at the same time this injury doesn’t define who Jordan is. She’s much more than the knee. She’s much more than a basketball player.”

Strode said she also found strength and comfort in her faith.

“I started talking to God more. I started reading the Bible more. I definitely got closer to God during these experiences,” Strode said.

However, there were times when Strode said that she wanted to give up, despite her progress.

“Sometimes I want to quit, but something in my head keeps telling me to keep going and believing; keep having faith, keep moving forward,” Strode said. “Everybody says it happens for a reason, I’m just trying to find out that reason.”

Strode is a junior in the books and a freshman on the court, with four seasons remaining, barring any injury. Strode plans to attend graduate school at St. Joe’s to continue her collegiate career.

Aside from swelling in her knee and mild soreness due to the nature of the sport, Strode said she feels physically ready to get back on the court. Griffin is also ready for Strode’s return.

“She’s going to give us athleticism, she’s going to give us quickness. Her defensive presence is she’s just so long and aggressive. She just goes at everything so hard, that we’re looking for her to contribute certainly on both ends of the floor,” Griffin said. “Keeping her healthy is going to be the key to her success.”

oming off of a second straight NCAA Tournament bid and five postseason appearances, it seems the Saint Joseph’s University women’s basketball team is picking up this season right where they left off. Led by senior co-captains Ashley Robinson, Natasha Cloud, and junior Sarah Fairbanks, the team is returning four of their five starters from last season’s successful squad.

“Natasha and Ashley were captains last year, so they are veterans in that respect,” said Head Coach Cindy Griffin. “Sarah Fairbanks is a new captain, she is a junior captain—so she’s kind of learning that role as we go along. They all bring something different, Sarah has a lot of playing experience, so I think that’s going to help her help the other kids on the team.”

Besides talent, one of the other factors in determining the captains is their ability to be leaders both on and off the court, in addition to their dedication to the sport.

“I think it’s experience, it’s kids that have a voice on the team that are highly respected for their work ethic and their loyalty to the program,” said Griffin.

aged a career-best 6.2 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game last season. Robinson also ranked second on the team in blocked shots, recording a total of 23. According to Robinson, this is a level of play that can be continued throughout this season by “playing offensive-minded.” “[I will be] trying to attack the glass, getting offensive rebounds, and then defensively just doing what I did last year and going after the ball on every possession,” said Robinson.

Robinson is aware, however, that one aspect of this season will be slightly different from last season: her impact on the floor. While she continues to attempt to put up points and reject shots, Robinson is also conscious of the fact that she will have to be a defined voice on the court.

“I think my role on the team this season is more trying to keep the steady foundation, having a definite voice to hear on the court, and just leading our younger players because we are very bottom heavy this season,” said Robinson.

Senior guard Natasha Cloud is also aware of the leadership role that she will have to continue from last season and

knows that leading the underclassmen on the team is something that she and the other captains will have to become accustomed to doing.

“We have three captains that are upperclassmen, so in the three we’ve won an A-10 championship and made it to the NCAA tournament twice,” said Cloud.

“Just giving the underclassmen our experiences and really just trying to get them to understand the level that we need to play at. As captains, we need to set an example on the court and off the court as well; but on the court, just lead by example and just being there as older sisters, really, for whatever they may need help with.”

Junior forward Sarah Fairbanks, who was named last year’s Big 5 Most Improved Player, is entering her first season as a captain for the Hawks.

“Definitely being named a captain gives me a whole new leadership role,” said Fairbanks. “Freshman and sophomore year you’re worried about doing your part and doing everything else that you can do.

Junior and senior year is where you really just start to worry about the team, where everyone is supposed to be, and I’ve really

seen that difference already.”

Last season, Fairbanks was named the team’s Most Improved Player, finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage (.503), and averaged a career-high 12.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, while also leading the team in blocked shots (38).

“I was here all summer working out,” Fairbanks said. “I think this year I am going to have to worry about being guarded a lot more and a lot more intelligently, so I’ll have to find my way around that. I think I got stronger over the summer and just kept developing my skills.”

The Hawks will tip off their season at Rutgers on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. St. Joe’s is entering this season ranked to finish third in the Atlantic-10 preseason poll.

Being ranked to finish third in the conference, Robinson knows that the Hawks are always a threat in the Atlantic 10.

“It definitely says that we are well respected in the A-10,” said Robinson. “We are a hardworking team, and it’s just a testament to what we do on the court and how hard we work every day at practice.”

fter an outstanding rookie campaign, sophomore sensation DeAndre’ Bembry looks to live up to the hype and improve upon his already impressive performance as a freshman. During his first year on Hawk Hill, Bembry averaged 12.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from beyond the arc. Bembry also broke the rookie record of games played with 34, and averaged over 32 minutes on the floor per contest.

With these impressive numbers, Bembry took home the honors of Big 5 Rookie of the Year and Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Year as voted on by members of the media and league coaches. After being touted as the best rookie in the conference, Bembry believes that these awards may bring pressure on him entering his sophomore campaign.

“Of course it’s going to put pressure on me, but I’m probably one of the better ones to deal with pressure,” said Bembry.

“To handle the pressure, I just make sure to come in and still play my game, that’s how I take the pressure off of myself.”

To play his game to the best of his abilities, Bembry has been working diligently since the conclusion of last season after being dismissed by the eventual National Champion UConn Huskies in the NCAA Tournament. Bembry has made improvements to his game, but they are not solely attributed to his work on the court.

“This whole summer I took a couple of classes to help me out during the year, and I worked all summer and I stayed up here all summer,” Bembry said. “I probably only took a week and a half off to go home. Other than that, I just stayed here working on my handling and my jump shot.”

After only one year playing collegiate ball, Bembry acknowledges that his game is still a work in progress. One facet of Bembry’s playing is his free throw shooting. After getting to the rim successfully on sev-

eral occasions and drawing fouls, Bembry was unable to earn points from the charity stripe consistently. Bembry attempted the second most free throws on the team last season with 156, but only knocked down 91 for a mediocre 58.3 percent. Displeased with this number, Bembry has been putting in the effort to improve on a crucial aspect of his game.

“I’m still trying to work on my foul shooting. I’ve been working on my jump shot still, but I know I’m not perfect at anything, so I’m still trying to work on every part of my game.”

In addition to his freshman accolades, Bembry was also recently named to the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team. The only sophomore selected to the squad, Bembry may garner even more pressure due to only having one season of collegiate experience under his belt. But as far as the honor itself goes, Bembry was motivated by the selection.

“I’m proud of myself of course, but it just adds more pressure to me. But I’m still just going to come out and play my game,” he said.

DeAndre’ Bembry is the most exciting player on the men’s team this season, and his growth and improvement from his breakout freshman campaign to his upcoming sophomore season could be spectacular. Bembry scored in the double digits 25 times last season, and by taking on a much bigger role this season as one of the leaders with the many seniors departing, Bembry’s numbers will only increase from here on out.

Bembry is the first Hawk to earn the conference’s top rookie honor since St. Joe’s legend Jameer Nelson during the 20012002 season. From his improvements on the court to his offseason dedication to his academics, Bembry seems like he’s in prime position to handle the pressure of his accolades and impress on the court once again this season.
