A Tribute to Roy Orbison & The Traveling Wilburys

Oh! Carol The Musical Story of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield

The late 1980s saw the birth of one of the most famous and memorable super groups of all time, The Traveling Wilburys, featuring a formidable team: George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lyne, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. They created a sound and style so unique that even to this day there has never been anything quite like it. Never actually going on tour, perhaps due to the untimely death of Roy Orbison in 1988 (played here by Paul Hopkins), their fans never got to see them all together in a live concert. With an easy relaxed style, excellent vocals and musicality these guys will give you that amazing night of entertainment.

Music

From their humble beginnings in Brooklyn to the dizzying heights of their success in the ’50s and ’60s, the song writing genius of Neil Sedaka and ‘Howie’ Howard Greenfield will go down in musical history as one of the most successful partnerships of all time. This show is packed full of hits such as Calendar Girl, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, [Is This The Way To] Amarillo, Stupid Cupid and of course Oh! Carol – masterpieces made famous not only by Sedaka but also by other well known performers like Connie Francis, Tony Christie, Tom Jones and LaVern Baker.

Professor Robert Winston Modifying Humans: Where Does Genetics Stop?

LIVE Cymbeline The Royal Shakespeare Company Cymbeline is a ruler of a divided Britain. When Innogen, the only living heir, marries her sweetheart in secret, an enraged Cymbeline banishes him. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both. Innogen embarks on a dangerous journey that will reunite Cymbeline with a lost heir and reconcile the young lovers. Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance. Join us for this cinema screening, broadcast live from the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Does the sequencing of the human genome really herald a new opportunity for medicine or is there a darker side that we ignore? The history of eugenics, from the Supreme Court in the US to the camps in Nazioccupied Europe, is a prominent stain on the scientific record. IVF treatments now mean we can treat apparently hopeless sterility and screen embryos for serious genetic disorders. Will ethical considerations prevent us from manufacturing stronger, more gifted and intelligent children? Or will our imperfect knowledge mean that there are some major surprises in store?

Dollywood to Hollywood A Tribute to Dolly Parton

Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan's special ingredient of Rock-a-Boogie songs throughout the 1970s including 'Telegram Sam' and 'Jeepster' he was able to obtain what would be yet another Top 20 record in 1976 that has since become one of the most memorable and everlasting signature tunes, 'I Love to Boogie'. The band has been described by many as ‘beyond the boundaries of tribute’. Truly a rock’n’roll concert for all ages. If you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!

Music

This world acclaimed 2-hour show, performed by the extremely talented Miss Julia Martin pays tribute to the musical journey from rags to riches of the undisputed queen of country music 'Dolly Parton'. The voice is Hendrix, and the persona of the man himself is on the stage, performed by John Campbell who bears a striking physical resemblance to Jimi. Così Fan Tutte LIVE The Royal Opera House OPERA IN 2 ACTS

Romeo and Juliet Traffic of the Stage

How much do you love your partner? How much do you trust them? And can they trust you? Mozart’s classic opera Così fan Tutte puts two pairs of lovers to the test – with great music but distinctly unexpected results. For this new production, director Jan Philipp Glogern creates a richly theatrical world as the playground for this quirky comedy, where two men try to woo each other’s partners for a bet. Don Alfonso – the puppet master of this experiment in love – is here a theatre director who uses all the sets, props and tricks of his trade to invent new scenes to challenge the lovers’ affections.

In many ways Shakespeare’s timeless tale of ‘star-crossed lovers’ is a study of loss of innocence set in an era when a young girl of marriageable age, was expected to conform with her father’s wishes. During the course of the play we see how love transforms an inexperienced, obedient girl into a spirited, vibrant young woman. Traffic of the Stage’s period production will show the colour and vitality of youth with its joyous intensity and passionate impulses. A controlling older generation undervalue the potency of youthful love and desire, and in seeking to control their children’s lives, they propel them into clandestine rebellion which has devastating consequences.

Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company

An Evening of Mediumship with TV Psychic Tony Stockwell

Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, John Osborne’s modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment. Rob Ashford directs Kenneth Branagh as the Archie Rice, with John Hurt as Billy Rice in the final production for Plays at the Garrick season.

For those with an interest in Mediumship, the name of Tony Stockwell will certainly need no introduction. Tony has been working tirelessly for over 25 years to demonstrate his belief that those who have passed can communicate with their loved ones. Tony’s insight into the lives of total strangers is inexplicable and remarkable as he attempts to offer fascinating revelations from the other side. Any parents or guardians with children aged under 18 months, if permitted, will have to purchase a 'babe in arms' ticket on the door or in advance at a cost of £2, the child can then sit on the parent or guardian's lap. Babies will only be admitted to U or PG certificate films.

We would be grateful if you would refrain from calling the Box Office 30 minutes prior to a performance as staff will be giving priority to personal bookings.*

Children We welcome and encourage children to the Elgiva Theatre, however some events or shows are not suitable for very young children. We endeavour to highlight and clearly indicate age suitability, but as we have to take the advice of incoming production companies who give us their recommended age suitability for their own shows, we cannot accept responsibility if patrons find an event unsuitable for their children. We suggest that if patrons are unsure as to whether an event or show may be unsuitable for their own children, that they ‘play safe’ and don’t book tickets. All patrons, including children, must purchase and occupy a seat and we have 10 booster seats available for very small children.

By e-mail: Please e-mail your booking requirements to boxoffice@elgiva.com and include: your name, address, email contact, daytime tel. no., date and time of the show/film, number of tickets required and any acceptable alternatives.*

Terms and conditions To comply with fire regulations, all customers must hold a valid ticket for the event. To avoid disturbing the audience and the performers, latecomers may not be allowed entry until a suitable break in the performance at the discretion of the Duty Manager. No cameras (including mobile phones) or recording devices will be allowed into any performance unless prior permission has been granted by the management. The Elgiva’s management reserves the right to refuse admission to any part of the theatre or site. The Elgiva frequently makes its facilities available for hire. Whilst we attempt at all times to safeguard your interests, the Elgiva can accept no responsibility for the quality, content, discount policies or pricing of these events. Ticket holders consent to filming and sound recording as members of the audience.

*Please note that tickets will be held at the Box Office for collection unless a £1 postage fee is added to your ticket total.
