Eligibility To be eligible for a James A. Hawken Merit Scholarship, a student must be an applicant for admission to Hawken School as a new ninth or tenth grade student and must complete all components of the admission application process.

93 out of 114 seniors are enrolled in AP courses in 2015-2016, as well as 57 out of 104 juniors. 84% of students earned scores of 3 or higher on AP exams in 2015.

Six Hawken seniors were named Semifinalists in this year’s National Merit Scholarship Competition with eight additional students named as Commended Students. Over the past ten years, Hawken holds the highest number of National Merit Semifinalists among the Cleveland area private schools.

In 2013, a Hawken junior was one of ten finalists in the National Shakespeare Competition held at Lincoln Center in New York.

Students selected as recipients of a James A. Hawken Merit

Selection Process

Each James A. Hawken Scholar Semifinalist will be invited to return to Hawken on a designated Semifinalist Day. Following the Semifinalist Day, the Selection Committee will select and notify the recipients of the James A. Hawken Merit Scholarship Awards with their admission decision.

International travel opportunities over the past several years have included curricular and extra-curricular trips to Chile, France, India, China, Nicaragua, England, Greece, Spain, Italy and the Bahamas.

Hawken juniors and seniors may enroll in our Entrepreneurial Studies semester program, a three credit honors course that pairs students as consultants to Cleveland area start-up companies.

One hundred Hawken students are enrolled in our STEMM Pathways Program, conducting summer internships and research projects with mentors from the Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, The VA Hospital, NASA Glenn Research Center, and other Cleveland institutions.

For six of the last seven years, a Hawken student has received a Grand Prize at the Northeast Ohio Science & Engineering Fair, earning an all expenses paid trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

The Hawken Speech and Debate Team is now ranked #1 in the Northcoast District. In 2014, the Speech and Debate Team competed at the National Forensic League National Tournament, winning two national championships, a second place championship and a Debate School of Excellence award, given to the top 20 schools in the nation.

Hawken is a member of the Global Online Academy, a signature group of independent schools from around the world. Students have the opportunity to take online courses with some of the best students from around the globe.
