Susan Ochi-Onishi has proudly served as a middle and high school music educator in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education since 1988. Prior to teaching at Kaimukī Middle School, she has held music teaching positions at Wai‘anae Intermediate School and Moanalua High School.

Mrs. Ochi-Onishi is in her 29th year at Kaimukī Middle School where she instructs the beginning, intermediate, and advanced band students and directs the Kaimukī Middle School Symphonic Winds. During her tenure at Kaimukī, she has worked hard to nurture, build and consolidate the KMS Music Department. She provided opportunities for her colleagues to serve as KMS Department Head while she focused on leading the KMS Symphonic Winds to a higher performance level. As the first middle school band from Hawai‘i to receive an invitation, KMS Symphonic Winds have proudly represented the State of Hawai‘i by performing at the 2019 Music for All National Festival. In 2015, KMS Symphonic Winds was the first middle school band from Hawai‘i to perform at Carnegie Hall, where they received the Gold Award for their high adjudication scores. In addition to performing at the ASBDA Convention and traveling to share their music with others, many of our students continue to participate in the Hawaii Youth Symphony Programs.

Mrs. Ochi-Onishi received her Bachelor’s Degree and PDMUS in Music Education and Oboe Performance from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She received her Master’s of Music degree from Northwestern University, where she was a student of Chicago Symphony Orchestra musicians Ray Still (oboe) and Grover Schlitz (English Horn). Her past oboe teachers include: Linda Strommen, Jeffrey Rathbun, Thomas Boyd, Margot Golding, and Roy Yanagida. She has performed with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, Royal Hawaiian Band, Maui Symphony, Diamond Head Theater, and various music ensembles. She served as the oboe lecturer at the University of Hawai‘i and continues to serve as the oboe clinician for the Pacific Music Institute. Her professional affiliations include the O‘ahu Band Directors Association and the American School Band Directors Association. Mrs. Ochi-Onishi is CoConductor of the Hawaii Youth Symphony II and is an alumna of the Hawaii Youth Symphony Program where she served as Principal Oboe during her time as a student.

Elton Masaki Conductor

Elton Masaki holds a Bachelor of Education Degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis in music from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and a Master of Music in Education Degree from Boston University. 2016 Spring Concert Series 9 Hawaii Youth Symphony SYMPHONY PROGRAM | 9

Dean Taba

Ahighly regarded studio and freelance musician, Dean Taba began his musical studies on the piano at the age of 6 and played French horn in the Hawaii Youth Symphony. It was a desire to play in the high school jazz band that introduced him to the bass and improvised music. After extensive studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and a refinement of his skills on both the acoustic and electric bass, Dean relocated in 1984 to Los Angeles to become one of its most in demand musicians.

Also a respected clinician and educator (Los Angeles Music Academy, Musician’s Institute, Cal-Poly Pomona, Grove School of Music) Dean has recently performed/recorded with Jeff Lorber, David Benoit, Mark Murphy, Jake Shimabukuro, Andy Summers, Sadao Watanabe, The San Francisco Symphony, Hiroshima, Rick Braun, The American Jazz Institute Orchestra, Dave Koz, Jeff Richman, Pauline Wilson, The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Daniel Ho, Bill Watrous, and many others as well as playing on countless CDs, TV shows, and movie soundtracks.

Ryan Howe graduated from Maui High School and completed both his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Master’s in Bassoon Performance at the University of Hawai‘i. He currently teaches middle school band at Moanalua Middle School.

Mr. Howe says: “I have two things that I love to do in life, teach music and cooking. Both are great ways to express one’s self and a great medium to change people’s perspectives in life and to teach humanity and good fellowship. Other than music, I like to play sports such as tennis, basketball, and golf. I believe that in order to be a healthy and effective teacher, you must have a balanced life. Mind, body, and soul. I look forward to working with all students and parents. Please feel free to ask questions, because I believe that everyone is important, and they deserve to be heard.”

Born and raised in Honolulu, Noel Okimoto has been playing professionally since the age of ten. Noel’s primary instrument is the drum set, but is also an accomplished orchestral percussionist, vibraphonist, composer and clinician. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Percussion from the University of Hawai‘i. Noel has played in Hawai‘i, the mainland USA, and internationally with Freddie Hubbard, The Woody Herman Orchestra, Stan Getz, Bobby Hutcherson, Richie Cole, Bill Watrous, Ernie Watts, Bud Shank, Barney Kessel, Lew Tabackin, Sadao Watanabe, Wynton Marsalis, Ronnie Cuber, Makoto Ozone, Jeff Richman, Larry Coryell, Nestor Torres, Gene Harris, Take 6, David Benoit, Henry Mancini, Nelson Riddle, Steve Allen, Natalie Cole, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Patti Page, Dionne Warwick, and Jake Shimabukuro, among others. He was also a member of the Gabe Baltazar Group for five years. He is also the percussion section leader of the historic Royal Hawaiian Band.

Okimoto recorded an award-winning jazz CD in 2004, entitled ‘Ohana, that received a 4-Star review in Downbeat magazine and positive reviews in other national and international publications.

About Jazz Program

A relatively new HYS program, HYS Jazz celebrates its fourth anniversary this year! Under the leadership of HYS Jazz Director Dean Taba, and with the support of our dedicated faculty including Dean, Noel Okimoto, and Ryan Howe, HYS Jazz offers Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble and Advanced Contemporary Ensemble for students 14–18. Advancing Hawaii Youth Symphony’s ongoing commitment to making music education accessible to all students, HYS Jazz also recently launched its Beginning Improvisation Group for ages 12 and up. HYS Jazz students are taught the skills necessary to play as a rhythm section, accompany others, and improvise. We are proud to have guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, and saxophonists among our student body, though HYS Jazz is a wholly inclusive environment and welcomes students from all orchestral instruments.

HYS Jazz frequently collaborates with highly-respected artists, and in its short history has already performed with Jake Shimabukuro, trumpeter Eric Miyashiro, saxophonist Steve Treseler, vocalists Shari Lyn, and John Valentine! Though the focus of HYS Jazz is music performance, many entrepreneurial facets of being a professional musician or working in the music industry are addressed throughout the year. Students have direct access to top audio engineers, influential musicians, and music business gurus. Learn more about all that HYS Jazz has to offer at https://hiyouthsymphony.org/hysjazz/

16 Hawaii Youth Symphony 16 | PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS Celebrating Our 59th Season!

Message from Maestro Stepec

Dear Senior Class of 2024,

Congratulationsto all of you on your graduation! You've made it!

Moments like these always seem to stand like great pillars, great milestones in the sands of time marking our progress, our evolution and our growth. These are the moments to celebrate. They are moments of achievement just as they are moments of great change: the beginning of a new chapter, the turning of a new corner.

In life, times like these are rare (you only graduate from high school once) and what is rare is precious. Take the time to reflect on all of you have learned and on all of the experiences you’ve had. I hope you now know that the obstacles you encountered along the way — no matter how severe and indomitable they once seemed — were, with a little grit and imagination, always surmountable. The lessons you learned these past few years will now light you on your way through the best of times, as they will also guide you in the worst.

Take the time now to practice gratitude — after all, you are the aggregate of all the love and care so many from all walks of life have invested in you. Give thanks for the people in your life and know that soon you will be the ones inspiring the next generation.

I hope that your time with us has left you with not just a love for music, but a love for people, for culture, for the arts — the arts, which are the expression of our humanity. As you now go out into the world, I charge you to remember what we've done in our rehearsals not as a challenge of skill and discipline, but as a shining example of collaboration and heart; an example of what we can achieve together as human beings in our own world.

Congratulations Class of 2024!

2016 Spring Concert Series 17 Hawaii Youth Symphony MESSAGES FROM THE CONDUCTORS | 17

Message from Mrs. Ochi-Onishi

Aloha Hawaii Youth Symphony Class of 2024,

As we close our Hawaii Youth Symphony 2023 – 2024 season, you may reflect upon your musical journey through school. From the time you first learned to play your instrument all the way to the present. The thrill of it all in navigating your way through the ups and downs, twists and turns, the challenges, and finally, your huge accomplishment in being able to touch the hearts of others with your high level of musicianship. I am impressed by the growth in all areas of musicianship from our HYS members. Your hard work, dedication, and positive mindset have enabled the orchestras to tackle a high level of challenging repertoire. Congratulations on your wonderful performances this year!

Thank you very much for your efforts and attentiveness during the many rehearsals. I greatly enjoyed working with you as one of your conductors. It is always rewarding to see the musical growth of the orchestras each year. I encourage all of you to continue to be actively involved in music in some form as you move on to college and beyond. Your continued involvement in music will also help you to stay connected with everyone else. I look forward to hearing great things about you and I wish the best for you as you continue your journey.

Sincerely,

18 Hawaii Youth Symphony 18 | MESSAGES FROM THE CONDUCTORS Celebrating Our 59th Season!

Message from Mr. Masaki

Aloha Graduating Seniors of 2024,

Before you embark on this exciting journey of graduating from high school and stepping into the next chapter of your lives, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of your high school experiences.

Music has been a constant companion throughout your years of growth and learning, shaping your experiences, emotions, and memories in profound ways. As you leave high school, you will find that all of the familiar routines you had in life are about to change. This can be scary but never forget what you have learned, accomplished, and overcome to reach where you are now. These memories and skills will provide a solid foundation to anything you choose to do in the future regardless of how much change you experience in your lives.

I am proud to have been a part of most of your musical lives and even if I was not your teacher, I am proud that you have been a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony (HYS) Ohana. Being a part of HYS means you gave up your time to participate in an ensemble that was created for the enjoyment of making music and sharing it with others. The world needs more people like you. Thank you for all that you have done for music in Hawaii!

I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, both musical and otherwise. I have no doubt that you will continue to inspire those around you. May your future be filled with endless possibilities and a soundtrack that reflects the beauty of your journey. Congratulations to all of you!

Yours Truly,

Congratulations! I am very proud of your accomplishments, and I know that the entire HYS staff, your teachers, families, and friends are as well! Thank you for making music a part of your life for the past several years. As you move on to college, work, military, or wherever life may take you, please remember the importance of music in our lives. Some of you will not be able to play your instrument as often as you do now, but I hope that you will all be advocates and supporters of music education in all our schools and communities. It was a pleasure working with many of you, and I wish you much happiness and success in whatever you choose to do. I am very excited to hear or read about your contributions to the world!

Message from Mr. Taba

Jazz

Program Seniors Alex and Dena,

One of our most important skills you’ve developed in your HYS/PMI experience is to be a great collaborator, and you have both demonstrated this very well. To do so required that you sometimes followed and sometimes took the lead, and this was something that you most often decided on your own. I hope that you notice this skill in all aspects of your life.

The fans at Mr. Okimoto’s Ohana Jazz Nights have really enjoyed hearing you sit in and watching your growth. It has come to the point that I expect to hear from them and the other musicians how much they notice your growth, both in skill and poise. Remember that by taking a chance and putting it out there, you have accelerated your development and had great fun in the meantime!

Mr. Howe, Mr. Okimoto and I have enjoyed every Saturday rehearsal together and have always been proud of your performances as well as happy for you to have achieved so much. We look forward to hearing of all your future endeavors, musical or otherwise, and wish you well on your next chapter.

With appreciation,

2016 Spring Concert Series 21 Hawaii Youth Symphony MESSAGES FROM THE CONDUCTORS | 21

Message from Mr. Lim

Dear Class of 2024 Seniors,

Congratulations on all of your successes thus far! Although your high school chapter is coming to a close, you are just starting to write the prologue to the story of the rest of your life. As you take your steps into the next phase of your journey, I hope you will always hold on to all of the things that being a musician has taught you. Through music, you have learned to be passionate, vulnerable, and empathetic. You are able to effortlessly come together with various peers of different backgrounds and age groups and work together towards a harmonious goal. You have experienced firsthand the immense value of practice, diligence, and perseverance. Music has forced you to take complete responsibility for your work, and has shown you how to respect and appreciate art. Even if you never play another note on an instrument, I hope that you will carry all of these traits with you into your adult career. You have become a better person through your musical studies, and I hope you will become an advocate for the art of music and the musical education of future generations. Whether I had the pleasure of working with you directly or not, I am proud of all of your accomplishments and your contributions to the Youth Symphony program here in Hawai’i. Though you may not realize it, you have positively impacted your community, and I hope you continue to do so in the years ahead. Wishing you success for your bright future!

Sincerely,

Jasmine Addison

Youth Symphony I / Trumpet / McKinley High School

Starting my junior year of high school, I started my Youth Symphony journey in CO. During my year at CO, I learned a lot under the direction of Mr. Fanning, Ms. Watanabe, and my high school band director Mr. Nakamoto. Being exposed to absurd orchestral key signatures in CO, and being forced into every possible wind ensemble at my high school, forced me to improve my musicianship very quickly. Entering the new HYS season, I was accepted into Youth Symphony I, where under the direction of Maestro Stepec, I was able to play and immerse myself in many different types of music and themes, including contemporary pieces, which became my favorite type of music to play. I’ve made many friends and connections through HYS, and these people have made every rehearsal worthwhile. I’d like to thank everyone who supported my musical journey from when I first started in middle school to now. If it hadn’t been for my middle school band director, Mr. Ujimori, encouraging me to make the big switch from the flute to the trumpet in eighth grade, I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am now. Lastly, I would like to thank my mother for always being my biggest supporter, even from way back then when I struggled to play five notes from the concert Bb scale.

Ian Ahn

Youth Symphony I / Cello / Punahou School

Ian Ahn started playing the piano at age four, and cello at the age of five. When he moved from South Korea to Hawai‘i at the age of 11, he decided to focus on cello, resumed his cello journey with Ms. Nancy Masaki, and currently studies with Dr. Jonas Carlson.

In addition to music, Ian is part of the Punahou Varsity Swim team, and JROTC. He is currently the principal cellist of the Hawaii Youth Symphony I and the Punahou Symphony Orchestra. Ian has also been a member of the Punahou Chamber Music Program since 2021.

This February, Ian performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the Honors Performance Series Orchestra. He plans on continuing to play music in college, and is planning to major in the STEM field.

Ian would like to thank Ms. Watanabe, Mr. Fanning, Ms. Ochi-Onishi, Mr. Masaki, Mr. Stepec, and most importantly Dr. Carlson for his mentorship and encouragement.

Sage Andrews

Youth Symphony II / Oboe / Kailua High School

Iam so glad I spent the last year in the Hawaii Youth Symphony’s Youth Symphony II ensemble. Although I was only in the Hawaii Youth Symphony for the past year, I feel I’ve gained years of experience. Not only did I acquire new skills as a musician but also made new friends that I hope to keep in touch with for years to come.

I vividly remember the day I was accepted into the Youth Symphony. I was riding back into the dock after a three hour windsurfing class when I received a phone call informing me of my acceptance into HYS. Although I was at first intimidated by the prospect of joining, I am so glad I decided to take this opportunity and become a part of HYS. It has shown me that we aren't inherently good or bad musicians, but rather that our “talent” is based upon the amount of work we invest.

Next year, I plan to major in ecology and minor in music. I want to play for the rest of my life and become a private lessons teacher one day. The Hawaii Youth Symphony has given me a foundation to build off and although I am sad to see this chapter come to an end, I feel ready for whatever the future has in store.

Ahren Awong

Youth Symphony I / Trombone / Pearl City High School

Ijoined HYS in 2023 and it helped me grow as a person and musician. I made new friends and improved my skills. I have been a member of YSI and it's one of the best experiences I could've asked for. The music is always fun and challenging, and the people are always friendly. At school, I participated in the Pearl City High School Marching Band and Boxing Club. I enjoy playing video games, working out, listening to and playing music. After I graduate, I plan to join the Army.

Aleena Bendzius

Youth Symphony II / Cello / Roosevelt High School

Hello! I started playing the cello in my freshman year after listening to a lot of classical music and falling in love with its sound. Being in the Hawaii Youth Symphony refined not only my musical skills, but also the ability to stay focused and dedicated which will guide me through future endeavors such as college. I intend to major in physics and I enjoy other activities such as composing music and surfing!

Dena Brennan

Concert Orchestra; Jazz II / Flute / Le Jardin Academy

Hawaii Youth Symphony’s orchestral and jazz programs have opened pathways to pursue my passion for music and have shaped my personal and academic goals. HYS has trained me to be resilient and reflective in practicing my instrument and conducting myself (pun intended!) inside and outside the music world. I joined HYS in ninth grade, doing the online symphony and jazz plus programs to supplement the lack of live music rehearsals during the pandemic. In my sophomore year, I was part of Mr. Fanning’s Wind Ensemble B for the first semester and the five-piece flute section in Youth Symphony II. And for the last two years, I can proudly say that I have been a part of the flute section in the Concert Orchestra! I have been an avid supporter of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and conducted Bizet’s ‘Les Toreadors' from Carmen this past summer at the summer season finale with JoAnn Falletta! I have learned so much from all of the conductors, my peers, and the community of HYS. I have found friends who share the same interests as me, which makes pursuing music less solitary. Next year, I will pursue a liberal arts bachelor's with a concentration in music at Sarah Lawrence College! I will miss HYS while I’m gone, but I am eternally grateful for all the opportunities and friends I have made!

Jordan Buenaventura

Youth Symphony II / Percussion / Aiea High School

HYS was one of the best experiences I've had with music this year. Originally, I only joined HYS to participate with a friend. But now, I know that HYS is a wonderful program filled with challenging music and eccentric people. My favorite part about HYS was the music. The music was always familiar to me and came from multiple series that I loved. Other music we played was challenging, but despite that they were very fun pieces. I wish I had joined earlier so that I could experience all of it, but regardless, I am still glad I got to be a part of it.

Dawson Chan

Youth Symphony I / Trumpet / Kalani High School

Music has been a major part of my life since elementary school. I started in YSI in my sophomore year. That year was a very different year due to COVID-19 making it primarily online. However, that didn't stop me, and I continued to practice hard to further my skills. I enjoyed meeting new people through HYS and I've made many friends. I enjoy the HYS program because I get to play challenging and new music with skilled individuals. Through it, I'm able to play things that I wouldn't be able to otherwise. I'm currently going to Kalani High School and am part of the Wind Ensemble. I was also one of the two high brass section leaders for the Kalani Falcons Marching Band. I plan to continue my trumpet career throughout college in ensembles and marching bands wherever I decide to go.

Michael Chan

Youth Symphony II / Cello / Mililani High School

Music has always played a significant role in my life. Since the age of eight, I have been practicing piano, and for the past six years, I have found myself drawn to the cello. This past year, I have been fortunate to be a part of YSII, where I have had the chance to connect with fellow peers and musicians. Working with them has been a great experience, and I have learned many important lessons in responsibility and teamwork, skills that I believe will serve me well in college and beyond.

Aside from music, I am deeply involved in my school's FIRST Robotics team, where I proudly serve as president. In this role, I have embraced the challenges of leadership and teamwork, encouraging innovation and collaboration among my peers. Looking ahead, I am excited about the prospect of continuing my academic journey in college and am considering pursuing a major in Computer Science.

Cielle Charron

Concert Orchestra / Bass / Kalani

High School

In sixth grade, I embarked on my orchestral journey with the viola, but it wasn't until sophomore year that I switched over to the double bass. Despite the challenges, fueled by my passion for music, I embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly. Although my time with the bass in Hawaii Youth Symphony's Concert Orchestra and PMI have been brief, I am profoundly grateful for the experiences offered. Beyond music, I'm a member of Kalani High School's wrestling and water polo teams, finding joy and discipline in both sports. Additionally, I find solace and discipline in the graceful art of ballet. As I bid farewell to this chapter of my musical journey, gratitude fills my heart for the lessons learned and the memories made. Looking ahead, I carry the melodies of past performances and a deep appreciation for the journey itself. I eagerly anticipate my next chapter at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, where I'll pursue a degree in kinesiology. Music will remain a guiding force, reminding me to approach each new endeavor with humility, discipline, and gratitude.

Narissa Chen

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Punahou

School

My HYS journey started all the way back in fourth grade in the Academy Program. Working my way up from ISE to YSII and also participating in the Punahou Symphony Orchestra, I found enjoyment in playing music with others. I always look forward to hearing the many different types of instruments come together, and I enjoy meeting others through orchestra. I think HYS has instilled in me a sense of discipline and professionalism that I will take with me in the future. I also enjoy figure skating and am a member of Hawaii’s Tropical Blades Synchronized Skating team. Having always been a STEM lover, I plan to major in engineering, and I also hope to also continue music in the future.

Travis Chen

Youth Symphony I / Percussion / Hawaii Baptist Academy

Towards the end of my sophomore year, I decided to give up on playing music. The pandemic stagnated my school’s band program and I saw no reason to continue. However, a couple of classmates and my family encouraged me to audition for HYS. On the last day, I submitted the application and audition videos. My expectations for landing in any ensemble was very low. So, you can imagine the shock and excitement I felt to be placed in YSI. I am truly thankful to Mr. Stepec and the HYS staff for their hard work and dedication, and for giving me the opportunity to perform with such talented musicians. These past two years have forced me to grow exponentially but I’ve learned so much along the way. I was also fortunate to play in PMI’s wind ensemble and symphony orchestra, where I met the very gifted Mr. Christopher Cabrera, who became by my “shifu,” mentor and educator. Although he destroyed me at each of my lessons, he also gave back to me the passion and appreciation for music that I had lost. For that, I am eternally grateful. I will be going off to college on the mainland but will return to Hawai‘i to pursue a career in the healthcare industry.

eZachary Choi

Youth Symphony II / Trumpet / Kalani High School

Ever since middle school, music has been a big part of my life. The music community has been supportive throughout my middle school and high school careers. Being a member of YSII helped me strengthen my skills and knowledge of music. Being exposed to classical music opened up a new genre of music to explore. The countless hours we rehearse every week on the selected pieces have strengthened me as a musician. Being part of the Hawaii Youth Symphony community helped me meet new people from different schools around the island! It’s a privilege to be part of this program and play with many talented musicians. In addition to being a member of YSII, I’m a member of the Kalani High School Wind Ensemble, “Falcon” Marching Band, and Symphony Orchestra. Throughout my high school career, I have created many memories from band class, marching band rehearsals, and pep band games. HYS has added more memorable memories that cannot be replaced.

Mana Chun

Youth Symphony I / Viola / Roosevelt High School

In the words of Niccolo Paganini, "Art speaks louder than words, for it reaches the depths of the human soul." This quote deeply resonates with me, capturing the essence of my love for music. As a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for many years, I've passionately played both the viola and violin alongside my talented peers. Participating in ensembles such as SOE, CSO, CO, YSII, and YSI, I gained many invaluable experiences. Through HYS, I have come to recognize the inherent opportunity to breathe new life into musical compositions and find interpretations that lie beneath the surface. This ongoing journey of exploration has not only enriched my musical abilities but has also cultivated within me a profound sense of adaptability, enabling me to approach challenges with a fresh perspective. Beyond music, I've explored my interest in science through shadowing doctors in hospitals and teaching classes for kids at UH Manoa. This has driven my academic pursuits, leading me to graduate early this year and start my collegiate journey at a fouryear institution (TBD), majoring in Biology on a pre-medical track. I see this as an opportunity to blend my passions for music and science, making meaningful contributions in both fields. This journey represents my commitment to personal and academic growth, driven by my love for exploration and learning.

Youth Symphony I / Horn / Moanalua High School

As a member of HYS, I have had the opportunity to meet many wonderful musicians and experience playing, growing, and having fun with my peers. This year has opened my mind to many new things, and I hope to use what I have learned to guide my future musicianship. .

After this year, I will be marching with a world class Drum Corps, and going on to major in Computer Science. I hope to be able to continue with music in the future, and I thank all of those who have made Hawaii Youth Symphony possible for me. W section this year!

Xinyi (Alice) Dai

Youth Symphony II / Flute / Sacred Hearts Academy

This is my first year to play with the HYS program. I've very much enjoyed meeting new people and cooperating with different instruments. I started to play the flute in seventh grade and stopped for two years because of the online classes. I am my school's principal flute and clarinet marching band section leader. Outside of that, I played in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band, Hawaii All State Marching Band, Honolulu Wind Ensemble, Hawaii Flute Society, and Saint Louis Pep Band. I also tried conducting the Hawai’i Pono’ī at the Listen & Learn Concerts. I’ve very much enjoyed trying different instruments and meeting new people. I plan to study at Smith College and double major in Economics and Music/Mathematics.

McKenzee Espiritu

Youth Symphony I / Horn / Castle High School

Mckenzee (Zee) Espiritu has been delightfully enveloped in music since before she can remember. Her family, especially her father, always harbored a great love for all types of music, which they would always share with her. In elementary school, Zee enjoyed dance and musical theater, but it was in middle school where she discovered her love for the Horn. Since then, she's participated in every music-related event she could. She recently marched with Na Koa Ali’i in the annual Pasadena RoseBowl Parade, plays in the UH West O‘ahu band, and is an active member of Castle High School’s band program. She started off in YSII during her sophomore/junior years and is now in YSI as a senior. Being a part of HYS has totally changed her perspective of music and introduced her to many incredible opportunities. She's loved forming friendships with people from all across O‘˜ahu as well as performing on beautiful stages on, and off island. She's truly grateful to HYS for showing her how much music connects people. She'd like to thank her compassionate mom for consistently supporting her aspirations, and for working so hard to ensure she has everything she needs to be successful. She also thanks her lessons teacher Mr. Au, who has shown her more patience than she could ever repay, and for cultivating her love for music.

Brycen Fabro

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Mililani

High School

Brycen began his musical journey when he was seven, finding an interest in playing the ukulele and eventually taking lessons. Wanting to further his career, he picked up the violin in the fifth grade and has been playing ever since. He first joined HYS only last year, but the experience has certainly made an impression on him; so much so that he has returned for a second year. HYS has inspired him to continue his musical journey well into his adult life, and he hopes to continue to improve with time.

Rylie Ann Hashizume

Youth Symphony I / Viola / Moanalua High School

Ibegan playing in the Hawaii Youth Symphony in third grade, before there was even a viola small enough for me to use; I instead used a one-eighth-size violin restrung to sound like a viola. From then on, I continued to participate in HYS. Over the course of ten years, I went from BSE, ISE, CSO, CO, and now YSI, as well as taking lessons and joining my school’s orchestras consistently. During this time, HYS taught me how “practice makes permanent,” to listen to myself and others around me, and that we are constantly improving, whether we see it or not. Currently, I am in YSI and Moanalua High School’s Symphony Orchestra and Menehune Marching Band. Next year, I hope to continue playing music in UH Manoa’s orchestra and marching band. All in all, I’m most grateful for the people I’ve met in every single music program I’ve participated in. From elementary school to high school and BSE to YSI, I’ve met so many new people and friends I’ll never forget.

Parker Hursty

Youth Symphony II / Horn / ‘Iolani School

I’ve been a member of HYS for two years and it has been a very memorable experience. I made many friends through the program and expanded my musical knowledge. I’ll be studying engineering at Boston University this fall where I also hope to continue playing the horn.

Cassidy Ibanez

Youth Symphony I / Cello / Mililani High School

Being a cellist in the Hawaii Youth Symphony and performing in CO, YSII, and YSI has been a wonderful experience. I enjoyed playing a diverse range of pieces and performing with passionate musicians, conductors, and guest artists. HYS has taught me about artistic expression, how to use music to connect with my community, and developed the skills of self-motivation, discipline, and attention to detail that are applicable in every area of my life.

In addition to HYS, through high school, I also conducted a threeyear-long research project that I presented at the International Science and Engineering Fair and National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, placed first at the Hawai‘i Annual Code Challenge, read a lot, and enjoyed playing in quartets for senior homes with my friends. I plan to study electrical engineering and later biomedical engineering for my master’s degree and will continue playing the cello. Music has taught me to “have an opinion!” (as Mr. Stepec says) and to be passionate, and I am sure I will learn much more from it throughout my life.

eGrace Kawaoka

Youth Symphony I / Clarinet / University Laboratory School

Iam so grateful I had the opportunity to play orchestral music through HYS. I enjoyed learning how all the different parts work together to create complex and beautiful music. I also made great friends and so many wonderful memories. I want to thank my music teachers and conductors for encouraging and challenging me throughout the years. I’d also like to thank my parents, family, and friends for always supporting me.

eKara Kim

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Kalani High School

Kara has been a part of HYS since eighth grade. She started off in CSO and is now in YSII as a violinist. Her favorite thing about HYS was meeting people and showcasing the beauty of music with her peers. She is currently at Kalani High School and plans to attend college in California majoring in chemistry with a minor in business on the pre-dental track. Kara would like to thank her parents and her amazing violin teacher, Ms. Asia Doike for all the dedication she has put into her lessons. HYS has truly been a wonderful experience to her and will always remember all the memories she has made within the past years.

Mie Kodama

Youth Symphony I / Viola / ‘Iolani

School

Euphoria is the only word to describe Mie’s feelings when playing the viola. From the moment she picked up a violin in third grade, music became her muse for expressing her passions and emotions. Since then, Mie has delved into an expansive musical world and explored different instruments before finding the viola. Through the viola, she’s experienced unique opportunities in ‘Iolani’s Orchestra 5, Tanoue Quartet and YSI. Although Mie has only been a part of HYS for two years, it has given her lifelong friendships.

Starting young, Mie’s grandmother, Marjorie Tanoue’s value for music has influenced Mie and has shown unwavering support for Mie’s musical journey. Her grandmother’s love for classical music has expanded beyond family and has changed many lives with generous donations and the founding of the oldest ‘Iolani chamber group. Along with Mie’s love for music, she enjoys sailing, giving back to her school, and chasing various opportunities. Music’s enormous role in Mie’s life has taught her that it's not just the sounds but the sights of an orchestra or chamber performance that tell a story. Bow movements, facial expressions, and even the subtle sway of musicians convey deep emotions. They’ve taught Mie that communication extends beyond words. These experiences have been instrumental in forming Mie’s identity musically and personally and she hopes that will continue for the rest of her life.

Shane Komeiji

Youth Symphony I / Flute / Punahou School

Shane’s musical journey began when he first picked up an ukulele in the second grade. Ever since, he has learned many other instruments, such as the alto saxophone and his voice. In the fifth grade, he began his private flute instruction with Aileen Kawakami. Over the years, he has performed in numerous competitions and recitals at retirement homes. He joined HYS in tenth grade as a flutist in both YSI and YSII. In HYS, he has enjoyed playing with other incredible, local musicians, including other HYS students, HSO musicians, and guest vocalists. HYS has shown him the impact and importance of music. Creating artistic music as an ensemble can truly impact others’ lives. Outside of music, Shane enjoys crocheting, tap dancing, and hanging out with friends and family. He hopes to pursue a double degree or a double major in flute performance and chemistry in college. Shane would like to thank his family for their endless support, Aileen Kawakami for guiding him through his music career thus far, and all his friends for inspiring and supporting his music.

Paula Marley Kong-Mercado

Youth Symphony II / Oboe / ‘Iolani School

Thank you for a great two years HYS! HYS allowed me to meet so many young musicians and was a great opportunity to improve on my instrument. Next year I will be majoring in Marine Biology and hopefully I will join the marching band at whatever college I end up at.

Keanna Lau

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Mid-Pacific Institute

Wow. It is sometimes crazy to believe I’ve reached the end of my high school career. Through all the years with music in my life, I am so grateful for everyone who has helped me achieve my goals and taught me valuable lessons. Since beginning the violin at the age of six, I’ve learned and grown so much. When I started HYS in elementary school, I was never fond of sitting through an hour and thirty minutes of what seemed like an eternity. However, as I began building friendships with people from all types of backgrounds, I began to have much more fun. As I played with others, and the idea of going to HYS didn’t sound as dreadful as I once thought it to be. In addition to music, I am a full IB diploma student, and I also play Division-I varsity tennis to attain a balance of physical and mental skills. Although the college I will attend is still undecided, I hope to major in biology. As I plan to pursue the medical field, I am sure that the lessons I’ve learned throughout this chapter of my life will help support my future endeavors.

Eugene Lee

Youth Symphony II / Cello / Roosevelt High School

To put it shortly, my time at HYS has been pretty great. I think I’ve been here for around five years total, starting in 2017 with a break in the middle due to the pandemic and school. Through those five years, I’ve learned invaluable musical skills and knowledge that I probably will carry for the rest of my life. Now, my next steps lie in higher education, hopefully leading to a job in the aerospace industry. I’ve already been accepted to a university and will be studying mechanical engineering with a concentration in aerospace starting this September in Boston. HYS will always be a cherished memory and I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities they have provided me.

Henry Lee

Intermediate String Ensemble / Violin / Maryknoll School

Hawaii Pacific University (Dual Degree)

Henry has enjoyed playing the violin in ISE and being a part of HYS for a number of years. His favorite thing about being a member of HYS has been the teamwork. He has studied the violin with Ellie LeRoux, Nikki Ebisu, and Duane Padilla. Henry is a senior at Maryknoll High School and enrolled in the dual degree program with Hawaii Pacific University.

In addition to playing the violin, Henry loves playing the piano and singing. He has sung with the Maryknoll Choir and has been a member of the HPU International Vocal Ensemble and International Chorale for the past two years. In addition to his musical interests, Henry is passionate about theater and has performed with ‘Ohana Arts throughout high school. He has also represented Maryknoll on the speech team since middle school.

Henry will graduate this spring with his high school diploma from Maryknoll and an AA degree from HPU. Henry plans to major in acting in college and is still deciding which school he will attend. He would like to thank his friends and family for all of their love and support.

Joel Lee

Youth Symphony I / Trumpet / Kalani High School

Hello, my name is Joel Lee, and I am a senior at Kalani High School. One of the best choices I made in my life up to this point was joining the Hawaii Youth Symphony program as an eighth grade trumpet player. Joining HYS opened up so many doors for me, as I got to meet many different people who are still to this day some of the closest friends I have, as well as many professional musicians who have given me some of the best pieces of advice whenever I meet them. These people that I’ve worked alongside, have elevated my playing so much, and without them, I would be nowhere close to the quality of player that I am today. I have learned and experienced a lot of things during my time in the HYS program, and the memories that I made here are irreplaceable. It has been an amazing five years here with HYS, and I am glad I got to be a part of such a great program.

Brenna Lewis

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Homeschool

Since moving to Hawai‘i three years ago, Brenna has participated in two different parts of HYS starting as a member of the Concert String Orchestra during her sophomore year and ending as a member of Youth Symphony II her senior year. As a homeschooled student, she is extremely thankful for the opportunity to play in such a large, accomplished program as HYS. She has taken private lessons with Ms. Sheryl Shohet for the last three years and would like to thank her for her constant guidance and encouragement. When not practicing/playing her violin, you can find Brenna enjoying sailing, crocheting, babysitting, or doing puzzles. After graduation, she is looking forward to attending a yet to be determined four-year college to major in communication sciences and disorders and eventually becoming a speech/language pathologist. She is also hopeful to add a music minor to her college career as a way to continue to grow her musical talents.

Daniel Li

Youth Symphony I / Tuba / Kalani High School

Ijoined HYS as a junior, in the second semester. YSI didn’t have anyone playing tuba, and I was recommended to Mr. Stepec by a friend and also a former teacher. I enjoyed the experience, and so the following year, I auditioned for HYS and got into YSI for my senior year. As a member, I've had the great privilege of playing great music with great people who I probably wouldn't have met were it not for the Youth Symphony. I'd say that doing HYS taught me a lot in terms of working in groups and being able to devote oneself to a task greater than themselves. Beyond HYS, I also auditioned for and was accepted into the All-American D-Day Band, so I'll be very lucky to get to visit France in June. In the coming years, I plan to major in Computer Engineering at Purdue University.

Ifirst wanted to thank HYS for the wonderful opportunities they have provided. From going to Maui and performing with Ms. Amy Hanaiali’i, I am so thankful! This is my first year in HYS and it has helped me grow as a person and a musician. I plan to take lessons learned with me to New York where I will be attending NYU for a music performance degree. Thank you!

Alexis Molina

Youth Symphony I / Oboe / Mililani High School

Iam honored to be a part of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for the first time in my senior year. HYS has allowed me to grow as a musician by introducing me to a variety of new and interesting pieces. In addition to being in YSI, I have participated in Mililani High School’s “Trojan” Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Indoor Winds, and Symphony Orchestra. Throughout my high school career, I have been involved in the National Honor Society, Japanese National Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Student Alliance for Mental Health and Wellness, HOSA–Future Health Professionals, Leo Club, and PAAC–Pacific and Asian Affairs Council. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my amazing band directors, Mr. Kaapana, Mr. Kawasaki, Mr. Hirata, and Ms. Higuchi for all that they have taught me. Upon graduation, I plan to attend the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa to pursue a degree in STEM.

Cody James Nakagawa

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Moanalua High School

My favorite thing about being a member of HYS was playing repertoire that wasn't possible in school such as An American in Paris or Romeo and Juliet that we performed last year. I joined HYS in the 2022-2023 school year and played violin in YSI. HYS has taught me how to be diligent and responsible with practicing my music. I plan to major in engineering in college, but I'm not sure where I'm going yet.

Youth Symphony II / Bassoon / Kailua High School

Music has always been a big part of my life. I began playing piano in elementary school and then bassoon in seventh grade. I play keyboard for marching band, piano for jazz band, and bassoon for concert band at my school. Through HYS, I have met people from many different schools, learned to appreciate new kinds of music, and reignited my interest in music as a whole. I started with HYS during the pandemic after attending the Pacific Music Institute. The pieces we played were a big challenge to me initially, but I enjoyed being able to play with string players. Mrs. O, Mr. Masaki, Ms. Watanabe, and Mr. Fanning provided guidance that taught me to think about my music in a more critical light - considering not just the technical aspect of music but also how my part fits into a piece as a whole. I am grateful to PMI and HYS for enabling me to learn from bassoon teachers Mr. Fanning and Mr. Morrison in addition to my teacher Mr. Richard Hotoke. They have given me invaluable advice on bassoon techniques, reed making, and the college audition process. I plan to study bassoon performance and piano in college. Thank you to my piano teacher Ms. Yahagi and my family for their support and encouragement.

For the past eight years music has had a huge impact on my life. Beginning in fifth grade, playing trombone has led me to do so many amazing things such as joining HYS my junior year. I’m very grateful that my director recommended me to join HYS and I started out in CO. My senior year I auditioned for YSII and earned the spot of Principal Trombonist. I’m very grateful for all the support I’ve gotten from friends, family, and band directors. Being in HYS, I feel that these past two years have helped me grow tremendously not only as a musician, but as a person as well. Music has lead me to do so many great things and play in so many different ensembles. Whether it was joining marching band my sophomore year, joing HYS in junior year, or marching in the 2024 Rose Bowl with the Hawai’i All-State Marching Band, I’m very proud of all my accomplishments and where music has taken me. I’m thankful for the memories HYS and music in general has gifted me and I’m very grateful for all the friends I made along the way. I’d like to thank my parents for always getting me to rehearsals no matter where it was, and my family and friends for always supporting me throughout my musical journey.

Aimee Okagawa

Youth Symphony II / Bassoon / ‘Iolani School

Aimee began her musical journey at four years old learning to play the piano. She then fell in love with her second instrument, the bassoon, during sixth grade band class. She has been part of HYS for two years in YSII, while also taking part in ‘Iolani School’s Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Orchestra. Outside of her musical activities, she loves going to the beach with her friends, finding new spots to eat, and doing service volunteering. Aimee would like to thank her piano teacher, Wendy Yamashita, for being a constant source of support and challenging her to grow as a musician. She would also like to thank her family and band teachers for believing in her and always being her biggest cheerleaders.

Emi Okumoto

Youth Symphony I / Violin / ‘Iolani School

Music has always been a significant part of Emi's life. At the age of three, she began playing the piano with her dad and later picked up the violin in third grade as part of her elementary school orchestra. Currently, Emi is actively involved in playing the violin in YSI, ‘Iolani Orchestra 5, and the ‘Iolani Chamber music program. She initially joined the Concert Orchestra in seventh grade and continued her musical journey with YSI during her junior and senior years. Emi is grateful to HYS for providing her with incredible musical opportunities, allowing her to meet and collaborate with numerous talented musicians. Emi particularly enjoys the experience of playing in a full symphony because it introduces richer and more varied tones, providing depth to the music beyond just strings. After graduation, Emi aspires to major in software engineering at a west coast college while continuing to play the violin in the university's symphony. Emi would like to thank her parents as well as her private instructor Dr. Helen Liu for always supporting her since the beginning of her violin journey.

Jayden Retutal

Youth Symphony I / Bassoon / McKinley High School

Ihave been in HYS for two years. I was first recruited into CO in my junior year, and I returned to be a part of YSI for my senior year after auditioning. At first, I had my doubts about HYS, thinking that my schedule would be too busy and hectic. However, I have come to love HYS through all the memories, lessons, and friendships I have made through this program.

HYS has been one of the greatest things I have done throughout my high school musical journey. I was challenged to work harder, reach heights I never thought I could reach, and teach younger generations about the orchestra. I am very thankful to everyone who has made my HYS experience a memorable one. All the things that I learned through HYS, from music lessons to life lessons, will stay with me forever.

Zoe Sagadraca

Concert Orchestra / Viola / Mililani High School

Istarted Hawaii Youth Symphony when I was in seventh grade. I began in the Academy Program’s Intermediate String Ensemble and also played in SOE, CSO and CO, which is what I’m currently playing in this year. I enjoyed playing in HYS because the music selection was always something unique and different every semester. Through music, each conductor not only taught me how to improve my skills as a violist, but also taught me more about myself. I will take the lessons that I have learned to help me progress as I enter into a new chapter of my life.

Youth Symphony I / Percussion / Pearl City High School

I’ve loved music for a long time, so I’ve always been active in the Pearl City High School band programs. From marching, to jazz, to select band, I’ve always looked for as many musical opportunities as possible. I had never played in an orchestra before HYS, so I decided to try it out. I joined during my senior year, and it has been such an amazing experience playing with other students who share the same passion as me. I’ve learned so much from professionals and peers, and I hope to continue to learn more after high school too!

Manami Sato

Youth Symphony II / Violin / Kalani High School

Istarted as a violinist when I entered sixth grade at Kaimukī Middle School. In seventh grade, I joined HYS as a member of the Concert String Orchestra and I’ve been a part of the organization ever since. Over the years, HYS has provided me with opportunities to learn and grow from teachers with a wealth of knowledge. Currently, I am in Kalani High School’s Orchestra, but I also play in the Wind Ensemble (band), and Marching Band. HYS pushed me to be the best musician I can be and opened me up to joining community groups like the Honolulu Wind Ensemble and the Hawaii Symphonic Band. Being able to join many different groups with musicians of diverse experiences has been a true blessing. HYS has shown me the importance of music in my life. Whether I’m in a band or orchestra, I will always enjoy the community of the musicians around me. HYS has provided many great memories and friendships that I’ll forever cherish on my music journey ahead. Mahalo!

Brady Schultz

Youth Symphony I / Percussion / Roosevelt High School

Ibelieve that spending these past few years in the Hawaii Youth Symphony has truly helped me develop both my own musical abilities and character. While music seemed intimidating to me as a child, I decided to be brave and try to learn an instrument in middle school. I soon became enthralled by the world of music, learning the piano and picking up percussion shortly after. Allan Ward, my percussion teacher, was the first to introduce me to the Hawaii Youth Symphony program, and I can never thank him enough. Being in this program exposed me to so much more music I was unaware of. During my sophomore year, I was introduced to breathtaking passages from Mahler, making him one of my greatest musical inspirations. We soon began performing in so many places as well, making for unforgettable experiences. Besides practicing music in rehearsal, I have also learned to practice taking the initiative, having a voice, and supporting those around me. While I have a variety of interests, I am certain to continue music in college and apply everything I have learned here. Expanding my horizons into music theory and composition also excites me, and I hope to see what other great things are in store for the Hawaii Youth Symphony in the future.

Youth Symphony I / Oboe / Hawaii Baptist Academy

Every Sunday during the ride to YSI rehearsal, I stress about playing my part well enough to not make a fool of myself in front of my symphony members. However, as we get into the repertoire, I end up enjoying making phenomenal music with very talented people. As a result, the whole rehearsal flies by, and I forget the stress. I love engrossing myself in music: Sometimes I scroll on YouTube just listening to the symphony repertoire for an hour. The reason why I love HYS is because it has given me a way to further dive into music by allowing me to play with so many talented musicians on amazing pieces. HYS forever! Long live HYS! HYS number one!

Youth Symphony I / Clarinet / Kalani High School

Ifirst started my HYS journey in the seventh grade as a member of CO. As I continued my years in HYS, I matured as a musician and was able to close off my junior and senior years playing in YSI. In addition to the lessons of discipline, patience, and cooperation, HYS has provided me with the opportunity to discover advanced orchestral pieces alongside other great musicians. Connecting with students outside of school who share similar values has truly allowed me to grow closer to the music community. I am beyond thankful for all the people who have supported me throughout my musical journey and will forever cherish the memories I created through the means of music.

Youth Symphony I / Horn / McKinley High School

Istarted my experience in the Hawaii Youth Symphony with the Pacific Music Institute the summer before I was a junior, later becoming involved with YSII, and now YSI in my senior year. It's an understatement to say that I wished I had encountered the program earlier. The unique experience I had, being taught by knowledgeable professionals who are local here, while being gathered with other musicians who share the same aspirations as me, has made the two years that I have been in the program part of the reason for my pursuit of Music Performance after high school. I would like to give a large mahalo to the entire staff of the Hawaii Youth Symphony, for making music a right possible for me and the keiki here in Hawai‘i, and all the adults and friends who have helped and contributed to my musical journey from seventh grade to now. I hope to continue my passion for music in Texas, and I wish good luck to my class for their future endeavors after high school.

Elizabeth Swan

Youth Symphony I / Viola / Homeschool

Istarted taking violin lessons at the age of five. I don’t ever remember a day without music in my life: whether it was singing as a family, everyone playing musical instruments, or going to concerts. One summer, at the age of 13, I participated in Junior Festival Orchestra and was inspired to try out the viola. Within several months I completely fell in love and switched from the violin to viola. I joined YSI in 2023 and have had the opportunity to perform with fellow musicians, travel to Maui, play with HSO members, and expand my horizons in the field of music. I’m very thankful for my private teacher, Sheryl Shohet, who has always encouraged me to continue to practice and seek out the beauty of each piece I am learning. In addition to being a member of YSI, I am part of a Christian Speech and Debate League which competes on a national level. I am extremely grateful for the countless hours my parents have sacrificed driving me to rehearsals, helping to prepare me for auditions or classes, and overall being so invested in my personal life. After high school, I plan to attend Grove City College in Pennsylvania to pursue truth through further education and continue my walk with the Lord. I also hope to be part of the college’s orchestra.

Belise Swartwood

Youth Symphony I / Violin / Mililani High School

Music is my growth. Ever since I picked up the violin at the age of four, music has given me the opportunity to improve. From gaining the discipline to practice for hours and holding myself accountable at lessons, to acquiring a seat in CO, YSII, and YSI, music has always presented me with challenges and opportunities. Being a member of HYS has aided my growth as a violinist and musician by encouraging me to be enthusiastic about music and providing me with an environment where I could learn from others and connect with a group of like-minded peers. In addition to being in YSI, I have been a competitive swimmer for Kamehameha Swim Club and Mililani High School. After I graduate from high school, I will be attending MIT and plan to continue my music career in the MIT Symphony Orchestra.

Kyli Taketa

Youth Symphony II / Percussion / McKinley High School

Istarted my musical path when I was only four years old playing the piano. During that time, I disliked playing and often had extreme performance anxiety to the point I couldn't even perform. I truly disliked going to lessons every week and I wished that I could have quit, but now I am thankful that I kept going. When I joined my middle school's orchestra, I realized that because of my background in music, I learned to play the violin very fast. Even though I don't play violin for HYS, I am the concert mistress for my high school and I teach my peers the musical lessons I have obtained through being in HYS. I also play percussion and piano for my high school band and jazz band. I am extremely thankful to the HYS program for allowing me to be in the symphony and teaching me important life lessons, not only just in music. I am also very thankful for all the directors and I will continue to cherish the memories and experience I have made. Even though I will not pursue a degree in music, I will keep on doing music as a fun hobby.

/ Moanalua High School

My musical journey started in the summer going into seventh grade when I first picked up the clarinet. I enjoyed making music with new found friends in my school ensembles, so when my private lesson teacher suggested I audition for HYS in my sophomore year, I agreed. I started in YSII then moved up to YSI my junior year. HYS has helped me connect with new people with similar interests as we learned and grew together. Through events like the Listen and Learn concerts, I learned about the importance of playing for others and the impact music can have on the community. In addition to HYS, I have been lucky enough to perform in Moanalua’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Marching Band. Having such great opportunities allowed me to grow both as a musician and as a person, and I gained unique experiences that cannot be found anywhere else. In the future, I plan to pursue a degree in biology while continuing my love for music.

Caleb Tamargo

Youth Symphony I / Horn / Kalani High School

To me, my favorite part about being a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony was participating in Listen and Learn school concerts. These concerts helped us connect to the community and show a future generation of students on the island of O‘ahu how incredible music can be. I remember being one of those kids attending the HYS Listen and Learn concerts and being amazed at the various possibilities. It’s what inspired me to start playing horn in the first place.

I started HYS in my sophomore year of high school, since the pandemic took away my freshman year. I attended both YSI and YSII and have made strong connections with the people around me. I’ve made many experiences that will stay with me for years. One experience that stands out was our recent Maui tour that expanded the reach of our program.

HYS is all about self sacrifice and dedication. HYS taught me to not just think about myself, but to dedicate myself to something bigger and think about what’s best for the group. I hope that I’ll be able to apply the lessons I learned in this program to the real world, wherever I go. I am forever thankful and grateful for the opportunities HYS has given me.

Alicia Tangonan

Youth Symphony II / Clarinet / Kalani High School

I’ve played the clarinet since the fifth grade and it’s become a significant part of my life. Progressively, I’ve also joined many music programs including the Hawaii Youth Symphony, which has taught me a lot and has helped me gain new experiences. I learned how to manage my time balancing all the things in my life like school, band, sports, and other extracurriculars, which is an extremely important skill for the next steps in my life. Perseverance, discipline, pressure, and positivity are all skills that being a part of music programs has taught me. Being section leader built new characteristics for myself and gave me leadership qualities I didn’t think I had before. I’m grateful that while also being part of something I am passionate about, I was also given many opportunities to make large impacts on others. From the parents and siblings in the crowd, and the little ones who watched us perform at the Listen and Learn school concerts. Although it was stressful at times, I’ve made many connections with other musicians and teachers who have made great impacts in my life. After graduation, I plan to earn my bachelor degree in business at a university (yet to be determined) and hopefully be able to continue playing the clarinet. Thank you for believing in me!

I’ve been a member of the Hawaii Youth Symphony for two years and I’ve learned so much from the experience. I got to express and share my love for music with others and make music with so many talented students who also have a love for music. I really value the time and energy that was put into this experience by teachers, parents, and students to make it memorable. I’m really grateful to my parents and my teacher for encouraging me to join this program. Being a part of the Hawaii Youth Symphony has brought me so much joy and led me to many achievements. I learned how to work with other people, collaborate, and be disciplined. In addition to being a member of YSII, I was on my school’s paddling team and enjoy many hobbies like photography and crocheting. This experience will lead me to other important experiences and success in the future. I plan to attend a four year university (TBD) and major in film or communications. I hope to continue my music career as well.

Jazz I / Drum Set / Punahou School

My family bought me a drum set at the beginning of the pandemic to begin a new exploration of music. The cadence of my practices were slow to start but escalated over the past four years as I got to play with more confidence.

The ease of harmony, the excitement of rhythm, and the challenges of music composition has made it a fulfilling and fun hobby.

This has been my first time with HYS and it has been an amazing journey of friendship and positivity. I joined to have more performance opportunities during my senior year, and I appreciate the art of sound and techniques which I am very grateful for learning.

While attending Punahou, I have been in the Jazz Band, inducted into the Tri-M Honor Music Society, joined JROTC, participated in the Announcement Club and the Japanese-Okinawan Club, and elected as Senior Class Senator.

The great thing about opportunities is that there are great people behind them making it happen for us. Thank you everyone, teachers, classmates, and family! HYS was one of the highlights of my high school experience. I hope to keep music in my heart, and know it has helped to shape who I am.I will pursue college in the Fall of 2024 at the University of California – Merced.

Being a part of HYS has been a dream for me since middle school when I saw my older brother play his double bass in HYS. I started playing in YSI my sophomore year just after Hawai‘i began to open up because of Covid-19. Being a homeschooled student, I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to play with others who had the same passion for music as I did. Besides playing in YSI, I played with the UH West O‘ahu Band for the past four years and was invited to play with the UH Wind Ensemble with Dr. Boeckman my senior year. I value how these groups continued to push my musicality and open opportunities to sub in the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. While participating in HYS, I have come to love how music brings a community together and the bonds I’ve created throughout the years. In addition to music, I've also been passionate about sailing, competing at the national level and winning two championships. Music and sailing are two vastly different activities that I equally love and learned to balance.

After I graduate high school, I plan to attend college for a degree in Biomedical and Microbiology. Later on, potentially attaining a Veterinary DVM certification. I’m immensely grateful to my teacher, Ms. Sue McGinn, and my parents and friends who’ve always supported me in everything I’ve accomplished.

Jason Vierra

Youth Symphony I / Cello / Moanalua High School

Ihave been playing the cello for eight years. My love for music started when I watched my brother’s high school orchestra perform and from that moment, my life would change. I began taking private lessons and soon I joined HYS. It was an eye opening experience for me and I got to know and learn from many different musicians who shared the same love for music I had. Music helped me learn self-discipline and the values of hard work, which I was able to apply to other parts of my life. I used what I learned in music to become a leader in both my school’s music department as well as holding multiple leadership positions at my high school. Music has brought me many new experiences and opportunities like making new friends and playing in different orchestra and chamber groups. But by far, my most valued experience was meeting other musicians that motivated me to push myself to new heights. Because of those musicians, I decided to pursue music at the next level. I will be going to college and double majoring in cello performance and digital marketing.
