Dear Hawaii Youth Symphony Supporters,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to He Makana O Nā Mele: The Gift of Music 2022. This year’s program—pre-recorded and produced by Hawaii News Now—is the third televised installment we’ve created in what has become an epic pivot for our organization!
Three years ago, when HYS first turned to the magic of television, we were simply seeking an opportunity for our youth to perform again for a public audience. We were new to pandemic life, to videoconferencing, and to the voids created by social distancing. Our first virtual Nā Mele provided us with a glimpse of hope: It was the first time in months that anyone had seen an HYS performance, and we were humbled by the outpouring of support from viewers nationwide and in Japan.
Last year, we built on that foundation and, working within strict gathering restrictions, were able to pull together 20-member chamber orchestras on the grounds of the stunning Halekulani Hotel. Seeing young people perform symphonic music in fuller ensembles was enthralling, but left us hungry for the sound of a true symphony orchestra.
This year, I am proud that we are finally able to deliver that experience to you. You will see and hear our flagship orchestra, Youth Symphony I, in a moving performance at the iconic Waikīkī Shell—a first for HYS! You will also meet students from our programs statewide, hear youth from our Nānākuli Violin program, and be impressed by our Academy Program’s Concert String Orchestra and HYS Jazz. It is incredible how good these students are!
Beyond the many students featured in tonight’s program, there are hundreds of others who depend on Hawaii Youth Symphony to help them develop to their fullest potential, through music and our Islands’ cultures. If you believe, as I do, in the transformative power that music has for bringing together young people from all walks of like, then I ask that you please join us in our aspiration and vision to Make Music A Right. Together, we can ensure that every child has the chance to hold an instrument, learn to read music, and have outstanding role models.
A sincere mahalo to all our sponsors, supporters, Board, employees, volunteers, and parents for their dedication to music and their passion for HYS. And finally, congratulations to our young performers! You make us proud!

Raiatea Mokihana Maile Helm thrilled the Hawaiian music community when she was merely 18-years-old, with the release of her debut album Far Away Heaven in 2002.
Raiatea’s melodic voice made her a natural performer of leo ki‘e ki‘e (Hawaiian falsetto), and earned her the reputation of being the successor to Hawaiian music legends such as Lena Machado, Leinā‘ala Haili and Aunty Genoa Keawe.
Her debut album continued to propel her career into stardom as she received two prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Most Promising Artist in 2003.
The release of Raiatea’s second album, Sweet and Lovely, more than confirmed her early promise and earned her two additional Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards in 2006.
The success of Sweet and Lovely further garnered her national fame as she became Hawai‘i’s firstever solo female vocalist to be nominated for a Grammy©. The album was recognized in the top 10 of “The 25 Greatest Hawai‘i Albums of the New Century” and Raiatea would later receive her second Grammy nomination in 2008.
In 2011, she became the first Hawaiian recipient of a prestigious Native Arts & Cultures Fellowship and her peers upon being awarded her sixth Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award recently named more Female Vocalist of the Year in 2017.
Even more recent, Raiatea received the 2019 award for “Leadership in the Industry – Outstanding Individual in Music and Entertainment” from the AIO media and Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association.
Raiatea is now recognized as one of Hawai‘i’s premier female vocalists and a keeper of the Hawaiian falsetto tradition of the early to mid20th century. She has captivated the attention of audiences throughout the Hawaiian Islands and around the world, interpreting traditional Hawaiian songs with classical elegance.

During the 2017–18 academic year, Stepec also served as the Interim Conductor of Youth Symphony I for HYS. He is an active clinician that has guest taught many ensembles visiting Hawai‘i and maintains an active relationship with the Global School of Music youth orchestra program in Shanghai, China.
Stepec studied violin with Gregory Fulkerson at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and conducting at the Eastman School of Music with master teacher, Neil Varon. In 2017, he was a conducting Fellow at the Menuhin Gstaad Music Festival where he worked closely with Jaap van Zweden, Music Director of the New York Philharmonic and noted conducting pedagogue, Johannes Schlaefli. In 2019, Stepec premiered a new translation of Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat set in colonial Hawa‘ii with members of Chamber Music Hawaii to very favorable reviews.
I am honored to have been chosen to lead HYS’ symphony program. HYS’ mission and its goals are ones that I deeply resonate with from my own special and formative years playing in a youth symphony: the opportunity to learn to make music together at the highest level and with the greatest commitment is one that shapes lives and forges unbreakable friendships and memories. I am thrilled to be fulfilling this new position alongside my incredibly talented colleagues at HYS and PMI

Adedicated educator, Jang is on the faculty of the University of Hawaii and Punahou School. He spent much of his time ensuring the success of the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival String Program before joining the Hawaii Youth Symphony. “It is the time you have lost for your flower that makes her so important,” says St. Exupéry’s Little Prince. Jang tries to follow that motto in his teachings year-round, to students of all ages, of all places.
As a violinist Ignace “Iggy” Jang is known for his sparkling technical fireworks, his sumptuous and enticing tone, and for his ability to forge personal connections with his audiences.
Carnegie Hall’s PlayUSA supports community partner organizations across the country that offer equitable instrumental music education programs to K–12 students, including those whose opportunities to engage in instrumental music instruction are limited by socioeconomic, geographic, or other factors. Hawaii Youth Symphony has been a PlayUSA partner organization since 2020.
The Nānākuli Violin Class is made possible through a collaboration with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii and is held in their NFL YET Clubhouse. Any clubhouse member age 8 & up may participate in the weekly group violin classes. Every participant is loaned a violin (free-of-charge), and learns to read music, play violin, and perform. HYS provides the instruments, instructor, and even guest/ visiting musicians for special performances!
Last Spring, the violin class participated in a special PlayUSA project, “Reflections on Resilidence,” which explored music as storytelling and encouraged students to see music as a source for mental well-being, healing, and resilience. They chose the song “Alu Like” and recorded it as part of their “Resilience” project. Their recording (which you will hear in today’s Nā Mele) was showcased at Carnegie Hall last summer, where it was met with resounding applause by PlayUSA artists, educators, and administrators from across the nation.

We are happy to support HYS as they make music available to all our young people, to make our community and world a better place!
Aloha, mahalo, and kudos!”Ginny
Ginny Tiu was a child prodigy, who started playing the piano when she was 3 years old. She was discovered by Ed Sullivan at the age of 5 years old. Ginny has performed throughout the world including at Carnegie Hall, before President Kennedy and President Bush, and was in a movie with Elvis Presley at 8 years old, titled “Girls! Girls! Girls!”. She is now very involved with and supportive of our community, including serving on the Board of the Hawaiian Humane Society, Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra, UH Board of Trustees, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Cameron Kravitt Foundation.
With a bold vision to Make Music A Right, Hawaii Youth Symphony is breaking down the barriers to access to music education. As the only state-wide music education organization in Hawaii, we aspire to put an instrument into every child’s hand, and bring the power and beauty of music education into every community. Too many children are currently denied the opportunity to make music, and HYS is committed to partnering with underserved communities to bring the joy of music making to where they live.
Since 1964, HYS has provided low-cost music programs for young people, and is the only venue where children from across the state can meet and play together in an orchestral ensemble. Currently, students from over 100 schools and nearly every island participate in HYS programs. Offering financial aid, neighbor island airfare, and merit-based scholarships to ensure state-wide accessibility, HYS welcomes every child without consideration of family financial capacity.
Hawaii Youth Symphony students collaborate to take their love of music into their communities. Performed ‘for youth, by youth,’ HYS “Listen & Learn” School Concerts serve as wonderful entry points to music education. Thanks to a partnership with Hawaii State Department of Education, HYS reaches some 12,000 young people every year through these FREE concerts, introducing children across the state to the magic of
“
It makes me feel so good to give back to the community through my love for music. I feel sparkles of joy when I see how much our audiences appreciate what we do. I want to become a better musician so that I can inspire more kids to play an instrument too.
For over a decade, HYS has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii to provide low-cost, entry-level classes to Clubhouse youth. Made possible through the generosity of private foundations, public support, and contributions to HYS, the classes provide free instrument loans, sheet music, and instruction on a weekly basis throughout the school year. More than 5,000 Honolulu-region youth (largely from Mo‘ili‘ili, McCully, Ala Wai, Pauoa, and Nu‘uanu) have had a chance to play music, thanks to our classes at the Spalding Clubhouse.
In 2019, HYS launched its Music in the Clubhouse initiative at the Nānākuli Clubhouse along the Wai‘anae coast. Carnegie Hall recognized HYS as Hawaii’s first recipient of a PlayUSA grant, a program that supports a wide range of instrumental music education projects across the nation, all with a specific interest in reaching low-income and underserved students on a local level. HYS also works with string students at Kaunakakai Elementary on Moloka‘i, and provides travel reimbursements and scholarships to Symphony Program and PMI students from Kaua‘i, Maui, and Hawai‘i islands.
Providing a welcoming, accessible, and affordable environment for students to both start and advance their music journeys, the HYS Academy String Program has existed since our organization’s inception and was the brainchild of conductor Harold Higa. Today, led by conductor and Academy String Program Director Chad Uyehara, the Academy’s students represent more than 40 public, independent, and home schools. In proud partnership with Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the Academy offers children ages 8 and older the opportunity to play violin, viola, cello, or string bass in group settings that emphasize the fundamental skills necessary for musical success. Children progress onward to the HYS Symphony Program and Pacific Music Institute, and many also become leaders in their schools’ orchestras. Beyond orchestra rehearsals, Academy students are also coached in workshop settings by incredible music educators who include school orchestra directors and professional musicians.
Our Super Strings violin classes at Le Jardin Academy were added to our Academy Program in the summer of 2021. Super Strings started to reach students on the Windward side of O‘ahu who are interested in learning to play the violin and experiencing the joy of music through the violin. Students learn basic instrumental technique, rhythmic patterns, note reading skills, listening skills, concepts of musicality, basics of group playing, improvisation, and a variety of musical stylers.
Do you know an aspiring young musician? Beginning students can start completely from scratch without any prior experience or instruments. HYS has an instrument inventory where families can borrow an instrument at no cost. Please follow @HiYouthSymphony on social media to learn when the next classes will begin!
The flagship program for local young musicians, our Symphony Program is renowned as Hawaii’s most prominent orchestral training platform for middle and high school-aged students. Established initially as a single ensemble in1964, our Youth Symphony Orchestra (as it was then known) connected Honolulu students in harmony and camaraderie. In the decades following, YSO expanded to three full symphony orchestras with students from nearly every island.
To become a member of the Symphony Program, students must pass an entrance audition. Additionally, members are held to high personal and musical standards and are expected to play in their school’s band or orchestra programs, take private lessons, or participate in other musical activities. HYS provides financial aid and scholarships to offset these costs by more than 70% so that no student is turned away for financial reasons.
”Joseph Stepec
Director of Orchestral Activities; Conductor, Youth Symphony I
Like the Academy, members in this program represent dozens of public, home, and independent schools statewide. Thousands of HYS students have matriculated through the Symphony Program in the last 57 years; each inspired by an incredible conducting team and other renowned teachers. Led by Maestro Henry Miyamura for more than three decades, nearly every member of our faculty and staff are alumni of the Symphony Program. Maestro Joseph Stepec, who succeeded Maestro Miyamura at UH Mānoa, joined our HYS team in 2019 to be our Director of Orchestral Activities.

The opportunity to learn to make music together at the highest level and with the greatest commitment is one that shapes lives and forges unbreakable friendships and memories
Arelatively new HYS program, HYS Jazz celebrates its fourth anniversary this year! Under the leadership of HYS Jazz Director Dean Taba, and with the support of our dedicated faculty including Dean, Noel Okimoto, and Ryan Howe, HYS Jazz offers Intermediate Contemporary Ensemble and Advanced Contemporary Ensemble for students 14–18. Advancing Hawaii Youth Symphony’s ongoing commitment to making music education accessible to all students, HYS Jazz also recently launched its Beginning Improvisation Group for ages 12 and up. HYS Jazz students are taught the skills necessary to play as a rhythm section, accompany others, and improvise. We are proud to have guitarists, keyboardists, drummers, and saxophonists among our student body, though HYS Jazz is a wholly inclusive environment and welcomes students from all orchestral instruments.
HYS Jazz frequently collaborates with highly-respected artists, and in its short history has already performed with Jake Shimabukuro, trumpeter Eric Miyashiro, saxophonist Steve Treseler, vocalists Shari Lyn, and John Valentine! Though the focus of HYS Jazz is music performance, many entrepreneurial facets of being a professional musician or working in the music industry are addressed throughout the year. Students have direct access to top audio engineers, influential musicians, and music business gurus. Learn more about all that HYS Jazz has to offer at hiyouthsymphony.org/jazz.
For over 30 years, HYS’ Pacific Music Institute has been the defining summer musical experience for thousands of aspiring young musicians. A 10-day summer intensive, PMI brings together a core of renowned professionals, members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and Royal Hawaiian Band, internationally acclaimed soloists, outstanding string quartet, jazz & studio musicians, and more.
“One of the highlights of PMI is being able to receive valuable insight from world-class musicians on an individual basis, through sectionals and private lessons. This was a much more intensive program than anything else available, and I was amazed how much my friends and I grew from it.
Constantly looking for ways to foster young people’s interests across all musical genres and instruments, HYS was thrilled to host its first Ukulele Workshop at PMI 2021, led by Jake Shimabukuro. Our “Jam with Jake” virtual event, free to all local children, and accessible to kids worldwide, further complemented the workshop and was our vision in action!
”More than 200 students from across the Hawaiian Islands, Asia, the U.S. Mainland, and Pacific Rim participate each summer. Getting to know others who love music with the same passion becomes the basis for lifelong friendships in an inclusive community where music is the common language. PMI also offers students the expertise of visiting professors from major universities and collegiate music programs, creating pathways for college admission, scholarships, internships, and more. Learn more at pacificmusichi.org.
In 2019, HYS announced an exciting new expansion to PMI; a strategic partnership with the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, to create the Orchestral Learning Alliance (OLA). NOI+F is one of the world’s leading summer music festivals for gifted, college-age musicians. This robust collaboration brings NOI+F students, faculty, and alumni to Honolulu to serve as teachers and mentors to PMI students.
Notes HYS President Randy Wong, “The acronym ‘OLA’ is also the Hawaiian word for ‘life’—and for members of HYS and NOI+F, music is life as we all share a common bond that helps bring people together.”
Through OLA, teaching Fellows sit side-by-side with PMI students in rehearsals, and students have an incredible opportunity to work with renowned guest artist faculty, often drawn from the NOI+F network of faculty and alumni.
There is a sensational culture of music in Hawai‘i, and I was blown away by the talent and opportunities that PMI provides. From staff to faculty to students, there was an incredible bond. That bond made the orchestra able to play together at the highest levels.
Braizahn Jones Associate Principal Bass Oregon Symphony
Many of these renowned musicians also have significant teaching presences in major universities and schools of music.
”“As musicians, we recognize the significance of collaboration and the positive impact that good mentorship has on those we have the privilege to reach,” shares Richard Scerbo, Director of NOI+F. “We are delighted to partner with HYS to support more young musicians and their appreciation for the arts.”
HYS alumnus Markus Osterlund, now professional hornist in the National Symphony Orchestra and NOI+F faculty, mentored students at PMI.

HYS is grateful to the many public, private, and home schools that play their part helping advance music’s role in their communities. The following schools are represented in our various HYS programs this year. We are deeply grateful to all the music educators and private music teachers whose expertise, encouragement, and support mean so much to our students. Every attempt has been made to publish a complete listing of schools for the 2022–2023 season, and we regret if any errors or omissions have been made.
