HRCI Approved Provider The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management degree program is now a Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) Approved Provider. With this certification, HPU is now authorized to provide courses for recertification credit for HR professionals who are already certified, as well as for graduate degree seeking students or non-degree seeking individuals working toward certification.

Today, many businesses and organizations are facing the growing challenge of managing one of their most important assets—people. This is reflected in the dynamic and rapidly growing area of human resource management and the demand for skilled and knowledgeable human resource managers.

Hawai‘i Pacific University’s MAHRM program is designed to prepare traditional graduate students for their first career positions as human resource generalists; to prepare returning students for promotion to senior-level human resource management positions; and to prepare career professionals to transition into the human resource field in middle or senior management positions.

The MAHRM Program has a multidisciplinary perspective, examining the areas of strategic management, workforce planning, employee and labor relations, compensation and benefits administration, human resource development, workforce planning and employment, labor law, information systems, occupational safety and health, global HR, and sustainable human systems.

The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) has acknowledged that HPU's Master of Arts in Human Resource Management is fully aligned with SHRM's HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Worldwide, only 67 programs in 62 educational institutions have been acknowledged by SHRM as being in alignment with its suggested guides and templates. The HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates were developed by SHRM to define the minimum HR content areas that should be studied by HR students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Learning Outcomes Students in the MAHRM program learn in a dynamic and interactive classroom environment from experienced faculty who use case studies, multimedia technology, experiential exercises, small group activities, and field projects. Decisions about managing people make a difference. Managers face intense pressures to achieve success through the people they lead. Management decisions will affect not only your own success, but also your employees’ behavior and sense of fair treatment.

Faced with the pressures of global competition, social change, and accelerating technological advances, managers are urged to take action. Solutions are not always simple, nor are they unchanging.

What works in one set of circumstances may not apply in another setting or with other employees. Thus, the search for “the answer” lies in an analysis of the conditions and people involved.

The MAHRM program at Hawai‘i Pacific University empowers students to understand what to consider in such an analysis so they can make effective decisions. The potential returns from decisions about employees can match or surpass the returns from decisions on other organization resources.

PSHR 6400: Human Resource Management

The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management program is designed for students who wish to specialize in the field of human resource management and its applications to other areas of organizational activity. The MAHRM program emphasizes the study and practices of human relations and managing people. Students are encouraged to actually participate in the classroom and in all aspects of university life, particularly cocurricular activities, internships, and appropriate work experience.

The MAHRM program requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate work divided into 33 semester hours of core courses, and 3 semester hours in an integrative seminar.

(36 SEMESTERS HOURS OR 12 COURSES) PSHR 6320 Global Human Resource Management This course examines the impact of globalization on the HR function. Cultural diversity, expatriation, and the role of transnational firms in developing economies receive special attention. Students will investigate the similarities and differences between HR techniques in national and multinational firms.

IS 6010 Applied Research Methods IS 6010 is a course in applied research methods. Its principal objective is to help students deepen their understanding of research analysis techniques and become proficient users and consumers of modern statistical analysis procedures.

Participants in this course will learn to apply the scientific method to investigations of research problems arising from observations of social problems and organization-based phenomena. Students will study acceptable methods for collecting, organizing, analyzing, and testing data; and for communicating findings in a professional research environment.

PSGL 6000 Sustainable Human Systems Students will learn to think systematically through the study of the systemic structure and values that underlying the modern world view. Alternative, emerging world views focused on sustainable structures will be emphasized. Systems thinking and a systems perspective will be developed through the study of environmental, cultural, and social systems. A critical perspective is emphasized throughout the course.

PSOC 6445 Organizational Behavior This course provides HPU graduate students with a broad overview of the OB field. Theoretical and methodological understandings of OB are discussed and analyzed via a combination of practically based cases and research studies.

Fundamental aspects of human behavior, such as motivation, communication, decision-making, problem solving, power, leadership, conflict resolution, and technology transfer are discussed in a globally appropriate perspective. Both non-Western and Western approaches to OB are compared and discussed.

IS 6100 Information Systems Management The course covers several broad areas: key IS and IT systems concepts; aligning technology strategy with business strategy; strategic management models; commonly used metrics for evaluating the performance, feasibility, and financial value of existing and emerging IS and IT solutions; professional, legal, and ethical issues as they relate to information technology.

IS 6101 Corporate Information Systems A required course for many graduate students at Hawai'i Pacific University. Its purpose is twofold: one, to ensure that all graduate students understand the building block concepts associated with modern computer and communications systems; and, two, to sensitize students to the business and management implications of information systems. Using a case-study approach, students investigate the effects of technology-enabling changes on the health and welfare of corporate entities and learn to evaluate the appropriateness of competing IS-based solutions to commonly occurring opportunities in a modern global economy. All students learn to use online research services.

LAW 6000 Law for Managers A course that reviews the structure of the U.S. legal system, contract, tort, and agency law, areas of law that permeate every aspect of business. Then the focus turns to areas of law closely related to business functional areas. Particular scrutiny is given to laws relating to finance, marketing, and human resources management. Finally, the growing regulation and burden imposed by federal and state statutes and administrative agencies are studied.

PSHR 6120 Employment Law This course focuses on the legal environment in which HRM decision-making occurs. Emphasis is placed on areas regulated by the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, and the US Department of Labor.

Topics include the Fair Labor Standards Act, employee benefits, applicable tort and contract law, and discrimination in employment.

PSHR 6400 Human Resource Management This survey course stresses a systematic approach to human resource management and decision-making. The role of HR managers is discussed, focusing specifically on the following functional areas: strategic human resource management, workforce planning and employment, and employee and labor relations. Using discussion, independent research, and objective testing, students build their knowledge of human resource management.

PSHR 6420 Compensation Management This is a survey course, in which students explore the contemporary issues and challenges facing compensation managers.

Changes in legislation are considered, along with behavioral science theories, social and human factors, and economics.

Students investigate the compensation management decision-making process, and the impact of these decisions on stakeholder constituencies.

PSHR 6450 Occupational Safety and Health Management This course focuses on the two major forces in safety management: the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and Worker's Compensation Law. Using these laws as a foundation, students learn: how to conduct safety inspections and accident investigations; how to deliver specific safety training; and how theories of human behavior and motivation can be used to develop corporate safety policies.

PSHR 6460 Human Resource Development This course investigates the factors that affect adult learning. Theories of motivation, human behavior, and andragogy are explored. Students will investigate mechanistic and traditional training modalities, and the circumstances under which these methodologies may be optimally employed.

PSOC 6440 Organizational Change and Development PSOC 6440 is the foundation for all MA/OC and Professional Certificate in OCD courses. Students first learn the basic nature of human culture and organizational change. Then the practice of OCD is studied within larger holistic and comparative contexts for global and local change. Discussions and assignments are designed to assist the student in differentiating between change and adaptation. Change and development initiatives in governments, communities, and corporations are discussed.

(3 SEMESTER HOURS) PSHR 7021 Professional Certification Seminar in Human Resource Management A capstone course for graduate students enrolled in the MAHRM program or MBA students with a human resources management concentration. All of the major areas in the HRM field are generally revisited. The course will be taught through a combination of lectures, in-class discussions, and experiential exercises that should assist the student in successfully completing the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) examination level of Professional in Human Resources (PHR). NOTE: Successfully completing this course will not, in and of itself, guarantee passing the certification examination.

Online Courses Distance education provides a convenient option for MAHRM candidates who require flexibility and the need to take courses on demand. Each semester, a variety of courses are offered online and provide students more scheduling options and the ability to take courses at their own pace. Online classes can help you accelerate the time to degree completion. Students are encouraged to work closely with a graduate advisor to design an optimal schedule of online and campus-based classes.

Professional Certificate in Human Resource Management The Certificate in Human Resource Management is designed for human resource professionals who would like to update their skills or prepare for promotion or relocation into another functional area of human resources. The certificate program caters to those whose professional or personal responsibilities preclude completion of the MAHRM program, as well as graduate students who seek specialized coursework and credentialing in human resource management. However, all certificate courses can be applied towards completion of the MAHRM program, should students decide to pursue the Master’s degree.

When reviewing an application for graduate admission, the Admission Committee considers several factors including: • Completion of a U.S. bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited college or university • Undergraduate grade point average • Letters of recommendation • GRE (if applicable) • Work experience (if applicable) • Personal statement/essay (Students interested in starting the MAHRM program immediately following their undergraduate program should apply in their senior year.)

A holistic approach is used, and no one factor will exclude an applicant from consideration.

The University is seeking students who have demonstrated the ability and motivation to do graduate-level work.

Applicants to HPU’s online programs should complete the regular graduate application form. Be sure to indicate your online preference in the appropriate box.

International students are not required to provide financial sponsorship, but should submit proof of English proficiency.

Once accepted, applicants to Hawai‘i Pacific University have access to HPU Pipeline – your online resource for services and information.

Hawai‘i Pacific University reviews applications on a “rolling” admissions cycle. An admission decision is made after the required documents for an applicant have been received. However, it is highly recommended that a student begin the admission process at least three months prior to the start of the term in which the applicant wishes to begin graduate studies. For policy on graduate-level transfer credits, contact the Graduate Admissions Office.

Application Procedures All applicants must submit the following documents to the address shown below: • A signed and completed application form • U.S. $50.00 nonrefundable application fee • An official/certified transcript from every college or university attended, showing coursework, grades, and conferral of bachelor’s degree. Official transcripts must be sent directly from the college or university to Hawai‘i Pacific University. Applicants may also submit official transcripts in envelopes sealed by the college or university.

• Two original and current letters of recommendation submitted by individuals who can attest to your ability to do graduate work (e.g. former professors, academic counselors, employers, business colleagues). Recommendation forms and military evaluations may be used in lieu of letters.

• Personal Statement/Essay describing your academic and career goals • Résumé (optional) • Applicants to Hawai‘i Pacific University’s graduate programs who have taken the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) should have their scores sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office.

Additional Requirements for International Students: •Mail certified copies or have official copies of transcripts sent directly from postsecondary school or testing authority, including an English translation.

•Submit a completed and signed Hawai‘i Pacific University Statement of Financial Sponsorship Form.

•Submit an original or certified copy of a bank statement or letter showing that you, your sponsor, or guardian(s)have an account which provides sufficient funds to cover at least one year of study at Hawai‘ Pacific University. (This is a requirement of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

•Though not required for admission, we strongly encourage applicants to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE). Applicants who score 550 on the TOEFL (213 on the computer-based TOEFL) and five or above on the TWE will not be required to complete English Foundation Program (EFP) courses. TOEFL’s Internet-based Testing (IBT) requires a score of 80 and a writing score of 25.

International students may also submit an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6 and a written module score of 6.5. Applicants with a grade point average of 2.7 or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university will not be required to complete Hawai‘i Pacific University’s English Foundation Program.

Accepted international students must then take the following documents to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country to apply for an F-1 Student Visa: Letter of Acceptance to Hawai‘i Pacific University, I-20 form issued

by Hawai‘i Pacific University, copy of the Financial Sponsorship Form, original and current bank statement showing sufficient funds (as above), and TOEFL results, if applicable.

Eight miles away, situated on 135 acres in Kane‘ohe, the windward campus is the site of the School of Nursing, the Marine Science and Environmental Science programs, and several liberal arts programs. Oceanic Institute provides a global center for research and education in the marine environment and life sciences. The University also offers classes at five military base locations on O‘ahu.
