HOME REALTY

LAURA TURNER REALTY GROUP:

WIN WITH THE RIGHT

Representation by Shari Held

For buyers, landing the home of their dreams is the big win. For sellers, it’s obtaining the best possible resale amount. Being represented by a skilled real estate professional can make all the difference. “To be successful in this market, all things have to align,” says Laura Turner, Broker/Owner of Laura Turner Realty Group with FC Tucker. Here are a few points to consider when looking for a real estate agent to represent your interests:  Years of experience – Real estate is a business where more years in the market is a big plus. Experienced agents have worked through sellers’ markets and buyers’ markets. They know how to handle multiple offer situations and can advise clients about what is in their best interests. They’ve also accumulated knowledge about different neighborhoods and even specific homes. And if they don’t have it at their fingertips, they likely know someone who does.  Full-time commitment – Real estate agents need to be actively involved in the market. Availability to your agent is especially important in a seller’s market when homes can be snapped up within minutes after the For Sale sign goes up. “I am always working on my clients’ behalf,” Turner says. “My sole focus is finding clients a home, on- or off-market.”  Creative approach – Savvy real estate agents recognize a winning offer and can write one given any market scenario. More

importantly, they’ve learned how to get creative to bypass hurdles and make their offer standout among many others.  Stellar reputation – The bulk of homes sold in this area are sold by top agents with a reputation for consistently delivering results. The best agents build strong relationships with other successful brokers and are easy to work with. “Reputation goes a long way toward completing deals,” Turner says. “People know when they work with me, they are going to get to the closing table without hiccups that will prohibit closing on time.”

Talk to Laura today if you’re in the market for buying a new home or considering selling your home. Visit her website at lauraturnerrealtygroup.com, or call (317) 363-0842 for more information.

Choosing the right real estate representation is critical for both buyers and sellers.

OUTDOOR LIVING

GREENIMAGE LANDSCAPE & DESIGN:

Living Your

Outdoors by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Nothing beats how wonderful it feels to relax outdoors after enduring a long Midwestern winter. However, if your outdoor space isn’t designed to meet your needs, it can be more frustrating than relaxing. Designing and maintaining a cohesive relaxing space can take a lot of time, but the professionals at GreenImage Landscape & Design can help give you that time back so you can live your best life outdoors. It all starts with figuring out what you want from your outdoor living space. Many homeowners embrace the chance to combine the entertaining capabilities of their kitchen with their love of the outdoors by building a beautiful, functional, comfortable outdoor kitchen. Some are even taking the experience to a whole new level by designing an outdoor kitchen that offers multiple cooking abilities. For instance, they are gravitating to built-in pellet smokers, which are outdoor cookers that combine elements of charcoal smokers, gas grills, and kitchen ovens.

“People want us to build in their grills like the Big Green Egg, which is a kamado-style ceramic charcoal barbecue cooker,” says Dan Weingart, owner of GreenImage Landscape & Design. The Egg also offers versatility since it can act as a grill, oven, or smoker. “Homeowners like doing two of those elements – maybe a smoker and a standard charcoal or gas grill.” Weingart installed one last fall that had a dedicated griddle on the island of the outdoor kitchen. When it comes to patios, the current trend finds homeowners leaning more toward pavers that offer a modern feel. In the past, the standard selection was a tumbled paver. Their most popular paver is called Beacon Hill Smooth, which is a large format modern paver. Retaining walls are following a similar trend where homeowners are requesting a smooth face rather than the traditional rough rock face. In short, everything ties together to create a cohesive design – even down to the swimming pool’s coping, which is the material that separates the deck or the landscape to keep water moving away from the pool. In the past, a natural stone, limestone or tumbled paver was used, but now homeowners are requesting to take that same exact paver and make it not tumbled. “People still want to incorporate a bit of natural stone into this modern feel,” says Weingart. “In these cases, we take elements of natural stone and incorporate them in various places – for instance, in the firepit area.” OUTDOOR DESIGN FROM TOP TO BOTTOM WITH GREENIMAGE “Typically, we’ll provide a generic layout and plan, then go back and let the homeowner pick out different finishes for pavers, the firepit area, retaining walls, or whatever it may be,” says Weingart. Though many businesses are struggling with timelines due to lingering

1 0 H AV E N

supply chain issues, thankfully GreenImage Landscape & Design has fared well. “The nice thing about our industry is that because we slow down or stop for the winter, that gives our manufacturers an opportunity to catch up on their inventory,” says Weingart. Shipping and delivery of natural stone may be delayed with diesel prices being so high. All in all, however, they are not experiencing the same type of lag time as homebuilders are facing. “It also helps that the majority of our products are made right here in our country,” he says. “So, we’re not waiting on the port to unload them.”

IT'S SPRING! Time to get outside and relax in your outdoor living space. Let GreenImage Landscape & Design create your perfect outdoor retreat.

THINK OF IT LIKE THIS: Can we build strong communities if 61% of Hoosiers are priced out of the housing market? Can we achieve sustainable economic growth when essential employees from retail, hospitality, education, and service industries cannot afford to live where they work? Can we break cycles of generational housing insecurity, empower “moveup buyers,” or accommodate the housing life cycle so people can stay in the neighborhoods in which they’ve put down roots without adequate options?

“Spring is in the air!” It’s a great feeling, isn’t it? When temperatures start to climb, flowers begin to bloom, and we inhale the sweet smell of freshly mowed lawns, these are signals that the winter blahs are behind us and lighter, brighter days are ahead. But something else also tends to emerge come spring – those people who ring your doorbell around dinnertime, asking if you’d like your windows replaced, your house

repainted, or your roof reshingled. Some of them are pretty smooth talkers, but that doesn’t mean they’re legit. By all means, feel free to hire a tween who wants to make a few bucks pulling weeds, but when it comes to big home improvement projects, don’t be taken by a scammer. “Do your homework so that you’re sure you’re hiring a trustworthy builder or contractor,” says Steve Lains, Chief Executive Officer at Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis (BAGI). “It’s important to get a contract in writing that describes the full scope of the work as well as any specifications for the job. It’s also a good idea to check the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division and the Better Business Bureau for complaint information to see if the contractors you’re considering are on the list.” Refer to BAGI to find reputable builders, remodelers, and suppliers. There is even a section of their website “Find a Remodeler” in which homeowners can review a list of reputable companies that do stellar remodeling work. The Indiana Builders Association (IBA) is also a great source as they have

more than 2,600 members, many of whom perform home improvement services. The IBA offers homeowner resources to connect consumers to industry professionals. While there’s a place in this world for trusting hearts, blindly trusting a stranger to tackle a home repair project could cause frustration, distress, and financial loss. It’s not unusual for unscrupulous, flyby-night roofers to swoop into town following a hailstorm to take advantage of homeowners who have just experienced tragedy. “These homeowners needed qualified, honest, ethical inspections of their home,” says Lains, who notes that the best way to find these people is by referral. “Ask family, friends, and colleagues for recommendations of contractors they have used and trust.” He also suggests homeowners be smart about payments. For instance, don’t agree to pay a contractor the full amount before the work begins, and if you pay in installments, do so after the completion of specified sections of work.” For more information, visit bagi.com or buildindiana.org/ homeowners.

CABINETRY TRENDS

ACo:

The New Oak Cabinetry YOU WILL LOVE Photos by Dave Pluimer

Think back to your kitchen circa the 1980s, 90’s, and even early 2000’s. Or maybe it was your parents’ or grandparents’ kitchen. it is likely that it was outfitted with honey oak cabinets. They enjoyed quite the golden-hued heyday, but today? Passé. Outdated. Overpowering. Searches for “Replacing honey oak cabinets” and “Can I repaint my oak cabinets?!” are just about as common as the cabinets themselves were back in their day! Trends have a way of dying only to rise from the ashes like a mighty phoenix. Not so much with honey oak cabinets which went out of favor for a few reasons: we started seeing a shift away from wood and towards whites, grays, and, more recently, colors. Another factor in their decline was that they did not play well with sleek, streamlined countertops and appliances as tastes and aesthetics progressed. From the partial overlay design to the arched doors, they did not evolve with changing trends and styles. But oak itself is back on trend. Get ready to meet the new oak cabinetry.

2 4 H AV E N

NEW OAK CABINETRY: WHAT A DIFFERENCE A STAIN MAKES The wood look is coming back into style after a decade or so of all-white kitchens and graydominated designs. (And no, white and gray are not out of style; when done well, they can be timeless.) Additionally, many homeowners want the durability, solidity, and authenticity of real wood. Again, oak has a great deal to offer when it comes to cabinetry. The primary difference you will see in new oak cabinetry is the stain. It is trending towards softer light and medium hues, which allow the beauty of the wood to shine through. Whereas honey was heavily saturated and quickly overpowered the space, these more subtle shades offer an elegant touch that pairs perfectly with the trend towards natural materials and textures. The style of on-trend oak cabinetry has – thankfully! – evolved as well. Unlike the rather ornate, fussy appearance of the old oak, homeowners are opting for frameless cabinets with flat-front doors. It is seamless and contemporary. You can combine this with

another hot 2022 trend that eschews hardware (e.g. pulls and handles) for an even more sleek appearance. How we use oak has also changed. It does not have to be all or nothing like the kitchens of the 1980s and ’90s. While you can go wholeroom with the lighter stains with great results, you may be of the mindset that a little goes a long way. In this case, you can combine oak perimeter cabinets with a painted island or switch it up with an oak island and darker perimeter cabinets. Mixing and matching two or three colors and stains throughout your space is a great way to add dimension. DO YOU LOVE IT? New oak cabinetry offers the quality, durability, and warmth of real wood with an updated appeal that flawlessly aligns with today’s tastes and needs. Oak is back! Well… it never really left. But we are leaving that honey hue behind and thoroughly enjoying the light, fresh shades brightening our spaces. If you are considering a kitchen remodel, your cabinets are the perfect place to start. Contact ACo for a free in-home design consultation to learn more about the latest in cabinetry styles.

ACo OAK IS BACK! Not the honey-hued oak of the ’80s and ’90s – but a fresher, lighter shade that blends perfectly with today’s design trends of natural materials and textures.

Built in 2004, the old-world style home was ornate and outdated – far from what new homeowners Michael and Laura Marlin wanted. But, when they saw a symbol associated with their youngest son replicated in the pool bath mural, they knew it was meant to be their forever home. The renovation was extensive, but with help from Classic Stone, Kohler, ProSource, Bennett Custom Homes, interior designer Alicia Dale and other professionals, the house became Laura and Michael’s dream home. Cambria, supplied by Classic Stone, was instrumental in that transformation – especially in the kitchen and master bath. The Marlin’s fell in love with Cambria after seeing it showcased at a home show years ago and knew they wanted it featured prominently in their new home. “Cambria has a very distinctive look, a high quartz content, plus it’s stainresistant, American-made and offers a transferable, lifetime warranty,” says Lisa Myers, business development manager for Classic Stone. The kitchen features a generously sized mitered island with a full height backsplash in Cambria. Alicia designed the master shower to utilize floor-toceiling 10-foot full slabs of Cambria, so no grouting was necessary. The vanity countertop is mitered as well. AFTER And, the plumbing fixtures

and floor tile were supplied by Kohler. “Cambria gave me the look I was going for,” Marlin says. “We have really enjoyed the overall process of making this home ours.” Cambria Quartz is the perfect material for many homeowners looking to remodel their current home or create their ideal aesthetic in a new build. If you are looking to embark on your next home project, connect with a designer like Alicia Dale Interiors (317-691-7883) or work with a quality home builder such as Bennett Custom Homes (317-414-3780) and ask for Cambria Quartz, granite and other stone materials from trusted dealer Classic Stone in Westfield. ProSource Wholesale’s Showroom (317-279-5129) features flooring and more. And, for all of your plumbing or lighting needs, contact the Kohler Signature Store (317-854-5999).

HOMESENSE HEATING & COOLING:

Keep Cool This Summer! by Shari Held / photo by Graham Photography

Bet you haven’t thought about your air conditioning over the past six months. Right? Warm weather will soon be here, and you’ll rely on your AC to keep your family comfortable. But what if you turn it on and it doesn’t work? Especially if it’s 80 degrees with a humidity factor in the 65+ range – one of those muggy days when you no sooner get showered and ready to go than your clothes are

sticking to you and you hope your deodorant lives up to its advertising! REPAIR VS. REPLACE Now is the time to schedule your summer maintenance. Many issues can be caught and fixed before they become problems. An AC unit contains many mechanical components including coils, thermostat, and electrical systems.

Any component can go bad. Homesense Heating & Cooling technicians will inspect your AC unit and give you an honest opinion. Often a repair will give it a few more years of life. In most instances, Homesense offers a 24-hour turnaround for repairs – unless a part needs to be ordered or it’s the hottest day of the year and everyone is calling.

Repair is always our first choice but replacing your AC may be necessary. If that’s the case, our technician will recommend a solution that addresses your comfort concerns, your health and safety issues, and your budget. We understand an AC unit is a bigbudget item, so we offer financing through Wells Fargo. REPUTATION AND RELATIONSHIPS Most of our technicians have been with the company for years and enjoy strong relationships with our customers. Over the years our company’s focus on honesty and integrity has been rewarded with a loyal customer base and an excellent reputation. You can’t live without AC. ELECTRICITY

BURTNER ELECTRIC:

Is a Noisy Bathroom Fan Driving You Crazy? by Shari Held

Whether it’s a high-pitched screech or a rumbling, clattering vibration, noisy bath fans are just plain annoying and distracting. Try conducting business from your home office when your bath fan is in high-noise mode. Everything comes to a standstill while you wait for it to stop. Then, there’s the embarrassment factor. A loud bathroom fan is a not-so-subtle cue that you’re either in the bathroom or have recently vacated it. Bathroom fans can collect dust, wear out, or sustain damage, causing them to vibrate excessively and become louder during operation. Besides being annoying, a damaged bathroom fan may not move enough air to keep your bathroom free of mold and mildew. Sometimes, a noisy fan isn’t defective, it just wasn’t manufactured to operate quietly. Most homes are furnished with contractor-grade bath fans that do the job but aren’t especially quiet. Contractor grade bath fans run around 5 to 6 sones (unit of loudness). The lower the sone rating, the more quietly the item operates. So, what can you do if a noisy bath fan is driving you crazy? Have Burtner Electric replace it with a “Whisper Quiet” bath fan with a sone

rating that falls between 1 to 2 sones! Besides being quiet, these bathroom fans are Energy Star Certified which means they cost very little to operate. “Changing your bath fans can protect your home from mildew and damage, as well as give you the comfort that comes from no longer having to put up with a noisy fan,” says David Burtner of Burtner Electric. Contact Burtner Electric at (317) 773-7663, or online at BurtnerElectric.com. We can change out your bathroom fan so you can enjoy peace and quiet once more!

TILE

DALTILE:

Creating Relaxing Outdoor Living Spaces with Indoor Luxury by Suzanne Huntzinger

Now more than ever, the outdoor patio or deck is becoming the new go-to hangout area for homeowners. Daltile has a wide variety of options to help you create that relaxing and inviting outdoor living space. Daltile’s Amanda Oldenettel says the leading trend this year is to create a design eliciting a peaceful, well-balanced ambiance. “From bringing nature indoors and continuing the indoor-to-outdoor transitional living space, a design that creates a haven of serenity has become the preference,” she says. Tile is a top pick for the outdoor living trend, thanks to its wide variety of dual use products (indoor and outdoor). One of the most popular choices to execute the transition between indoors and outdoors with tile are two-centimeter pavers. The pavers are about twice the thickness of regular tile, and feature wood, stone, and sophisticated cement options. This style can be used in the kitchen then carried out onto the patio, creating continuity through both spaces. These beautiful pavers bring luxury design to your pool, patio, and outdoor kitchen. Xteriors™ is another excellent product designed for gracious outdoor living, with that indoor luxury look. It offers an exceptional collection of products for outdoor floors, walls and countertops. “Xteriors™ far outperforms other materials,” Oldenettel says, “It’s durable, easy-to-maintain porcelain, it’s UVresistant, stain-resistant, fire-resistant, slip-resistant, and freeze/thaw-resistant. You can’t go wrong.” Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to get started on your plans for an incredible outdoor living space. Call Daltile at (317) 841-0883 or visit Daltile.com to learn more about your options for marrying your indoor and outdoor style.

LUXURY TILE OUTSIDE? YES! Tile is a top pick for the outdoor living trend. It far outperforms other materials, according to Amanda Oldenettel of Daltile.

CUSTOM HOMES

G&G CUSTOM HOMES:

PLAN AHEAD for Your Custom-Built Home This Year by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by The Home Aesthetic

Some people are planners while others like to wing it. Some people make decisions with their gut while others research a topic at length. While there is no right or wrong to any of these approaches, the fact of the matter is that in today’s custom home buying market, homeowners must plan ahead. If you don’t, you’re bound to be frustrated, disappointed, and disheartened by the entire process. “Right now, you can’t just call up a builder and say, ‘Hey, we want to get started tomorrow.’ That’s not going to happen,” says Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes. “In today’s world, you have to plan 6-12 months in advance.” Planning on the front end can save weeks, if not months, of valuable time. For instance, if a homeowner shows up with drawings in hand, they are already ahead of the game. 3 0 H AV E N

“The design process alone can take two to three months,” says Garcia. By the time you price out the house and sign a contract, that’s another month. Financing may take an additional month and a half. This is why it takes close to a year to build a home today. According to Garcia, you’re looking at 18-20 months before you’re able to move in. “That wasn’t the case a few years ago,” he says. “I used to be able to build a house in nine or ten months, but now every [subcontractor] is so busy.” As a result, this leads to potential gaps between jobs. So, let’s say it takes five or six weeks to lay a foundation. Once that’s done, the framer may not necessarily be ready to go because he may be finishing another job; that delays the project by a week or two. The same is true of other subcontractors where, say, the framing is complete but the

plumber or HVAC guys aren’t ready to step in. “In the past, a house wouldn’t sit still, but that has changed these days,” says Garcia. Then there are the supply chain issues. Because the lead time is so far out for things like windows and appliances, it’s key to start making decisions right out of the home-building gate. Back in the day, homeowners selected appliances later in the process because that was something that didn’t get installed until three weeks before the move-in date. Again, times have changed. Currently, some appliances are taking as long as 12 months to arrive. “What’s crazy is if it takes you 12 months to build a house, that means you have to pick appliances as soon as you start!” says Garcia. “A lot of people just aren’t thinking that far ahead but they really need to be.” With production houses, homeowners often go in early to pick out everything upfront before even breaking ground on a house. It’s

difficult to do that on a custom home because there are so many pieces involved. However, in today’s home building market, it is becoming a necessity. Garcia suggests showing up to the first builder meeting with photos in hand from Pinterest or Houzz that show your preferences for both exterior and interior options. This can help both you and your builder keep the building process moving. “Come with pictures. Come with a plan,” says Garcia. “The key is to plan ahead, armed with as much information as possible. If you’re thinking of building a home next year, you need to start looking for a builder now.” Connect with G&G Custom Homes at ggcustomhomes.com to start a conversation and get planning for your new home build.

MONT SURFACES:

Products and Service that

Stand the Test of Time

A

by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by The Addison Group / design by Tiffany Skilling

s a kid, I always looked forward to the weekend after Thanksgiving when our family would go out to the tree farm and select the perfect specimen of pine to adorn our living room for the month of December. It was so fun to bundle up and meander the fields, checking out all the different varieties, sizes, and shapes of the trees. At the same time, however, the process seemed a bit overwhelming simply because the choices were so vast. Looking back, a tree-hunting expedition pales in comparison to the process of selecting the right surfaces for your home because when you’re talking about a choice that will last for years, if not decades, the pressure to get it right is intense. While perusing countless selections may sound intimidating, if you’re working with the right people, that same experience can instead be exhilarating. Finding the right surfaces for your home’s style and particular taste, then guiding you through that process, is what the Mont Experience is all about. IT ALL STARTS WITH SUPERIOR QUALITY SURFACES Mont Surfaces, a family-owned company, has eight divisions throughout the Midwest and 32-plus years of experience in the surfaces industry. As a wholesale supplier, they showcase more than 400 unique surface varieties in natural stone, including quartzite, granite, marble, soapstone, onyx, engineered quartz, porcelain slabs and panels, and precious stone. When most people think of natural stone countertops, granite typically comes to mind. However, Mont Surfaces offers a variety of the most popular surface materials, including engineered quartz, porcelain, and quartzite, a natural stone that’s different than engineered quartz. “Quartzite is a metamorphic stone that was transformed over time,” explains Kathleen Cannon, Senior Account Representative at Mont Surfaces. “The grains of sand, which are natural quartz, were compressed and fused together turning the sand into a very dense, hard, heavy and compact stone known as quartzite.” In addition to its exceptional beauty and large spectrum of colors, quartzite has a marble look but endures like granite. Its strong, durable surface is dense and compact in its structure, which enables it to resist staining and etching. When natural quartz is combined with resins and formed under heat and pressure, the cracks and crevices between the quartz crystals are filled, and a non-porous, strong surface material is created – engineered quartz. Made up of ingredients that, when combined, take on qualities of natural stone, 3 2 H AV E N

Mont Engineered Quartz is custom designed to appeal to a wide array of contemporary designs and is unique in its movement, color, brilliancy, and clarity. “It combines long-lasting beauty with durability and strength, creating unique and exquisite surfaces,” says Cannon. “If you’re looking for a durable, low-maintenance, sophisticated look that provides the ability to confidently select from a myriad of patterns and designs, you’ll want to consider engineered quartz.” The porcelain surfaces of today offer even more unique design possibilities coupled with authentic marble, quartzite and concrete looks. Porcelain combines extreme strength, a low absorption rate, versatility, ease of installation, and high performance into one stunning engineered surface. Plus, it is fade, stain, and scratch resistant and can withstand high levels of heat. Homeowners typically are drawn to porcelain for their floors, fireplace surrounds, backsplash, and exterior uses. In addition, porcelain panels are being used increasingly in shower surrounds because they provide minimal joints and grout, easy maintenance, easy handling, beauty, strength, durability and the look of marble, natural stone and concrete. “Unique materials are Mont’s specialty!” says Cannon. “We travel the world to hand-pick every surface that we purchase so that clients can have more options and be confident in the materials they choose.”

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND WITH THE MONT EXPERIENCE What really sets Mont apart, whose motto is, “Surface Selection Perfected,” is their dedication to customer service and creating a seamless customer experience, which they call the Mont Experience. A typical visitor to Mont is at various stages in their home improvement or building process. While some have a design professional or fabricator already in place, others are in in the beginning stages of the process. “In addition to our vast amount of surface options, our customer specialists educate and guide clients through the selection process to find their perfect material based upon their individual lifestyle and personal taste,” says Cannon. When a consumer enters a Mont location, they will first check in with one of their customer specialists. They can then browse the design center to garner inspiration and ideas by viewing beautiful design vignettes and a variety of surface applications before entering the slab showroom. The well-lit, heated indoor slab showroom includes hundreds of surface varieties with varying colors, designs and hues. Once browsing is complete, visitors have the option to tag, hold, or finalize their selections. Much like selecting that Christmas tree when you pass it on to the farm team to shake it, wrap it, and carry it to your car, this is the point at which the Mont team takes over, handling the necessary paperwork and delivery of the material. “When design and industry professionals refer their clients to Mont, they can rest assured that their knowledgeable and courteous associates have the experience and expertise to guide their clients and make the material-selection process fun, educational and exciting,” says Cannon. Clients appreciate that Mont utilizes custom software to communicate and coordinate all necessary information. The Mont team also serves as the liaison between the design or industry professional and their client, which saves both the consumer and the professional time by handling the paperwork and product delivery to the fabrication location. “Design and industry professionals can feel confident about referring their clients to Mont,” says Cannon. “We are committed to providing a seamless experience for our design and industry partners while offering an abundance of high-quality product options.” Mont Surfaces is conveniently open to the public six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with no appointment necessary. Offices are located at 5945 West 84th Street, Suite A, Indianapolis, IN 46278. For more information, call (317) 875-5800 or visit montsurfaces.com to check out their live inventory.

THE MONT EXPERIENCE Dedication to customer service and creation of a seamless customer experience is what Mont Surfaces calls The Mont Experience. 3 Problems Builders Face

& HOW TO SOLVE THEM by Christy Heitger-Ewing

In life, everything good is built on a strong, reliable foundation. That’s true in relationships and in construction, which is why hiring a reputable concrete company is so important. Custom home builders who work with Flatmade Concrete appreciate the seamless process that the team at Flatmade provides as they offer a wealth of knowledge and experience, not to mention foresight and integrity. “We respect the work of other trades, we leave a job site cleaner than what we found it, we read prints with precise detail, and we keep a budget in mind,” says Ben Driskell, owner and operator of Flatmade Concrete. PROBLEM 1: KEEPING CONTRACTORS ON SCHEDULE When contractors show up late, it causes the entire project to be delayed. Solution: The team at Flatmade Concrete strives not to overbook. Doing so enables their installers to show up when they say they will or even early, if needed.

“I keep an eye on all upcoming jobs to make sure things are being done correctly so that we don’t get slowed down by, say, power not being on or water not being

hooked up,” says Driskell, who is also proactive about initiating conversations with builders regarding scheduling rather than waiting for a phone call to say, “We’re ready for you now.” “It’s better to be proactive in life,” says Driskell. “That’s why we all appreciate a good weatherman!” PROBLEM 2: CONTRACTORS COVERING UP UNDERLYING ISSUES Sometimes overzealous contractors cover up problems that need to be addressed early on. Driskell has found this happens most often with pools. “Fixing it later, is not a solution to installers who rush through the project,” says Driskell. “When working on new homes and pools,

we’re the last line of defense for any prior coverups or mistakes. Improperly placed items become permanent and uninstalled items become difficult or impossible to change after the fact.” Solution: Driskell does thorough preliminary walkthroughs to keep such problems from happening.

PROBLEM 3: BUILDERS NOT GETTING WHAT THEY PAY FOR Contractors can skimp on quality materials; in the concrete industry, that comes down to concrete mix design.

Solution: Concrete is a time-sensitive product, and every concrete contractor has a success rate.

“Builders like dealing with successful contractors who get the job done right the first time,” says Driskell. “This equals fewer headaches, fewer phone calls, and more time to handle the things that matter.” For high-quality concrete work, connect with Flatmade Concrete at (317) 446-5549, or e-mail at sale@flatmadeconcrete.com. WINDOWS & DOORS

BECLEY BUILDING GROUP:

Here Comes the Sun

by Christy Heitger-Ewing

Whenever Mike Rocchio, partner at Becley Building Group, meets with clients to discuss the features they most crave in their new custom home, he hears the same words echoed back to him, time and again. “Everyone always says they want a ton of natural light,” says Rocchio. That’s good news because Rocchio and his partner, Jason Deckard, partners at Becley Building Group, know the perfect windows to install. “A ton of natural light equals a lot of glass, and there’s an energy impact on that. That’s why every home we’ve ever built has Pella windows in them.” The Becley Building Group, which builds roughly ten custom homes a year in and around Hamilton County, has received a 5-star plus energy rating. Pella windows are a big part of that rating. “Not only do Pella windows look nice and have customizable options, but they also perform on an energy level that isn’t really surpassed,” says Rocchio. “From a utility standpoint, I’m paying the same now in a 6,400 sq. ft. house as I was in my first starter home that was 2,000 sq. feet and did not have Pella windows.” BECLEY AND PELLA FOCUS ON CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE TO CREATE BEAUTIFUL HOMES At Becley Building Group, the partners know an excellent customer experience starts with being transparent with every client interaction. “Nobody gets upset when it’s a good surprise, and we try to limit those bad, unexpected surprises,” says Rocchio. “We say, ‘Let us deal with the headaches.’ We want to make the building experience easy and fun,” says Rocchio. “People tend to enjoy the process of building a house more when they can focus on exciting things rather than worrying about schedules, materials or whatever it may be.” Part of creating a quality customer experience is the harmonious teamwork at Becley between Rocchio, Deckard, and the rest of the team. The partners recently hired interior designer Marin Mills, who meets with customers to do selections, pick colors, and be the organizing glue that holds it all together. “Our company took a big turn to the positive when we hired Marin because before her, I handled all of the interior and exterior design selections,” says Rocchio. “I’m a guy so I may have made it 3 8 H AV E N

more utilitarian than pretty. She makes sure the home is cohesive and beautiful.” And of course, the Pella windows from McComb also add to each home’s beauty as well as the customer experience. One popular Pella product that Rocchio loves is the multi-slide doors that disappear into the wall and help bring sunshine and nature into the home. “If you do a lot of entertaining, it’s nice to open it up, hide the entire door in in the wall, and have both of those spaces become one,” says Rocchio. Rocchio is also quick to praise the McComb Pella team, Eric Gulbrandsen and Jody Sims. “They’re always on top of everything,” says Rocchio. “When I send out for bids, Eric’s the first to get back to me. If we need to change the package ten times, he takes care of it and never complains.” From the team at Becley to their partners at McComb, everyone works together to create a high-quality customer experience. BACK TO THE CLASSROOM AND BEYOND Jennifer wants students to bring the problem-solving and critical thinking skills they are learning and honing – as well as the confidence they are developing – at the Maker Playground back to their classrooms and to their lives. She says, “The one aspect I really hit hard on is grit. I tell the kids: if you come across a problem anywhere in life, you can say, ‘I can’t do this. It’s too hard; I give up,’ or you can have the growth mindset of ‘I can figure this out; I can solve this.’” You don’t need to be a fifth grader to take advantage of the learning opportunities available at Hub & Spoke’s Maker Playground! Learn more about what we offer the makers in our community.

JENNIFER SUSKOVICH: MAKER PLAYGROUND TEACHER-INRESIDENCE If you have or know a middle school child, you know it takes a special person to teach them! Jennifer Suskovich is that person. science in fifth and sixth graders. Experiential, hands-on learning has always been a top priority for Jennifer. So, when a partnership between HSE and Hub & Spoke created the need for a teacherin-residence, Jennifer leapt at the chance, saying, “It was right up my alley! I thought, ‘We can do so much with this space.” The HSE/Hub & Spoke partnership opens the Maker Playground’s doors to over 1500 area fifth graders – and, ideally, opening their minds to the possibilities and opportunities of the STEAM world. Jennifer says, “That’s the fun part about this age. They still have that natural wonder.” Three times each school year, they visit the Maker Playground to let it loose.

Fifth grade students in the Hamilton Southeastern School District are welcomed to the Maker Playground at Hub & Spoke to let their STEAM creativity and curiosity run wild. Each of the 1,500 students visit three times per school year. COLOR PALETTE

24X24 FLOOR TILES:

Go Big and Go Home! photos by Dave Pluimer

4 2 H AV E N

Sometimes bigger is better, and when it comes to selecting flooring for your remodel, large format tiles are definitely on trend! Oversized 24x24 floor tiles have been sweeping the design world and making themselves at home – beautifully – across the country. What are the benefits and the best places to use them? And are they right for your home? WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT 24X24 FLOOR TILES? 24x24 floor tiles are entering the home with exceptional results. Why is bigger better, or at least a strong option to consider?

 Rooms appear larger. Many people assume that if they install large format tiles, it will make the room look smaller. Not so! Here’s why: there are much fewer (and often thinner) grout lines involved in a floor with 24x24 tiles. The effect is that the visual field is not interrupted every few inches. As a result, the room will look and feel more spacious.

 Less maintenance. Fewer grout lines mean less intensive maintenance. If your favorite chore is scrubbing grout… 24x24 floor tiles may not be for you. If, however, you enjoy doing literally anything else in your free time, then they may be just the solution.

 Versatility. Large format tiles are exceptional choices for modern, contemporary, and transitional styles, but they can work just as well in a variety of homes. If you love patterns, for example, the expanded size allows you to create the look you want without visual interruption. You also avoid the sense that you are overcrowding a room or overwhelming other elements of the design.

 Wide-open options. You can source 24x24 tiles in different materials, including natural stone, ceramic, and porcelain, as well as in a variety of colors and patterns. Whether you want a crisp, white marble for a statement-making kitchen or bath or a porcelain that achieves a warm wood look for your entryway or great room, there are options available to meet your needs from top manufacturers like Daltile and Emser Tile. TIPS FOR USING 24X24 TILES IN YOUR HOME Again, the best option for your home is one that suits your style, preferences, and aesthetic goals. That said, you do want a design that is cohesive and makes sense for the space. With that in mind:

 Don’t angle the tiles. One of the big benefits of 24x24 floor tiles is that you minimize grout lines and keep the line of sight as uninterrupted as possible. Setting the tiles at an angle creates more obstacles for the eye, so to speak. Let large format tiles shine by choosing a straight setting.

PRO TIP: When using oversized tiles, don’t angle them. Choose a straight setting to keep the line of sight as uninterrupted as possible, and maintain a clean design.

 Which room? Where would you normally use tile? The kitchen? The bathroom? The great room or living room? The mudroom or entryway? The patio or outdoor kitchen? Feel free to consider 24x24 floor tiles in these spaces. Large format tiles are not restricted to any one room. LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE If you are thinking about 24x24 floor tiles for your home, contact the experts. ACo’s team includes experienced design and installation professionals who will help you make the right call – and ensure your results exceed your expectations. Connect with us.

 Don’t be afraid to use large format tiles in smaller rooms. Large format tiles in small rooms? Are you crazy? Nope. Just savvy! Using 24x24 tiles makes rooms look larger – where better to use them than in a smaller space! Again, because of the minimized grout lines, you can create the illusion of more space. For best results, consult your design and remodeling team.

Home & Willow just opened a new design studio in January 2022 at the Hub & Spoke Design Center in Fishers. Although the location is new, owner and founder Stacy Stater and her team bring a full house of experience in the design industry. After working 18 years at a design firm, strong encouragement from her husband and brotherin-law convinced Stater to branch out on her own. She opened Home & Willow in April 2021, out of her home, and moved to the new studio in January 2022. When she told people the news, they told her “Thank God, we’ve been waiting for you to do that.” Home & Willow’s rapid growth has necessitated the growth of the design team as well. Stater ensures consistent service to all Home & Willow clients by training her staff of eight to carry out her core values and keep her main mission in focus – helping clients make their house a home. She even incorporated those values into the company name. “I chose Home to represent the company’s home design service, and Willow for its deeprooted, botanical nature allowing it to prevail in the strongest of storms,” Stater says, “I want our staff to be giving and flexible and go with the flow.” Opening and running an interior design studio Marfil River

in the middle of a pandemic has presented some positives and some challenges. The housing market has shifted priorities for homeowners, motivating them to either build a new home, buy a bigger existing one, or update their current home. No matter what their situation, Home & Willow is ready for it. “The home is the most important place in everyone’s life, and our job is to create a space that provides a respite and order from the chaos of daily life,” Stater says. Stater and her team always start with the same approach. “It’s important to build trust. It’s a tremendous honor to be trusted enough to be invited into someone’s home,” she says, “You’re traipsing through master bedrooms and baths and such, and the client is very vulnerable. We get to know their style and personality and prove to them we can transform the house into something that reflects them, not us.” Stop by Hub & Spoke to visit the Home & Willow studio and see firsthand the wealth of creative ideas for your home. FIREPLACE, CHIMNEY & MASONRY

CHIMNEY & MASONRY OUTFITTERS:

Now Brick + Ember

STILL YOUR GO-TO OUTFITTER FOR FIREPLACE, CHIMNEY, AND MASONRY As a homeowner, it can be a headache and rather daunting to find the right contractor for the job. Often, you may not even know what you are searching for. And when you finally find the right contractor, you may not know all the services they provide, and may start your search all over again for a related project. What homeowners really need is a trusted company to become their go-to when they have a problem. So, when it comes to all things fireplace, chimney, and masonry, Brick + Ember (formerly Chimney & Masonry Outfitters) wants to help clear the confusion and become your go-to outfitter. As their old name implied, Chimney & Masonry Outfitters restores and repairs chimneys and other masonry. But the company does that and so much more. With their new brand, Brick + Ember continues to offer reliable, full-service on everything from fireplace design and installation to masonry restoration, repair, and even maintenance and chimney sweeps. “We’ve had a lot of success over the years, and now going into our 11th year, we realized there’s a need for more clarity around what we do,” says Nate Hill, Director of Sales and Marketing for Brick + Ember. “We love restoring the beauty of masonry. But we also enjoy bringing the beauty of a fire into our customers’ homes.” Brick + Ember offers a different approach and a hassle-free experience. They listen and ask questions to find the right solution for you, while offering clear information and education giving you peace of mind that the job will be done right.

As their services have expanded through the years, one of Brick + Ember’s goals is to give the fireplace more prominence in the home. The kitchen is often called the heart of the home and is a popular gathering spot, but a well-done fireplace can also draw a crowd. The focal point of many living rooms, your fireplace should be a place where you can relax and cozy up surrounded by family and friends. “Much of the rest of a family’s life takes place in the family room, living room, or den around a fireplace,” Hill says. “We want people to realize the connection that happens there – the intimacy and coziness that happens around a fireplace.” So, whether it’s redesigning an existing fireplace, installing a new wood burning, electric, or gas fireplace, or even adding a woodburning stove, you will find a trusted source at Brick + Ember. “We’re essentially a one-stop shop for everything related to fireplaces, chimneys and masonry restoration.” Learn more about all the services Brick + Ember offers and how they can deliver an experience that exceeds your expectations. HOME TECHNOLOGY

BRAVAS:

Energy Done My Way by Christy Heitger-Ewing

One reason it is so appealing to build a custom home is because you, as the homeowner, get to be in control, peruse all the options, make all the choices, and create the ideal home that suits your wants and needs. “It’s nice being in control – especially when it comes to options around power management,” says Candace Hoffman, Business Development Manager for BRAVAS Indianapolis. “These days more and more homeowners are intent on having clean energy homes.” BRAVAS, a leading technology innovator, has teamed up with Savant Systems to provide their clients with the ability to control their energy use and their home’s microgrid. Tom Gunderson, Technical Sales Manager for Savant Midwest and Canada, notes that this isn’t a new endeavor. Seven years ago, Bob Madonna, CEO of Savant Systems, knew that homeowners were going to be adding things like solar, back-up generators, battery supplies, and other

4 6 H AV E N

alternative energy sources to their homes. So, he started a separate company called Racepoint Energy to develop innovation around this technology. Last year, Racepoint Energy was folded back into Savant Systems; creating what is now called Savant Power. “Because of this technology, consumers can be completely in control of the energy that is coming into their home,” says Gunderson. “BRAVAS takes their expertise in home automation, making the home work for their client by adding in this additional level of energy management.” While the west coast has been focused on energy efficiency for some time, that trend is now trickling across the country as people embrace alternative energy uses (e.g., electric cars). Powering your home in the cleanest way possible is a top priority for many energy-conscious homeowners. According to Gunderson, at some point all companies will be focused on energy savings. In addition, some homeowners are adding solar to their houses in order to help offset energy usage in a greener fashion. BRAVAS steps in by partnering with Savant Power, allowing clients to take full advantage of all of these technologies, integrated together. “We can take all of the home automation that us, and BRAVAS, have been doing for years and fold it into a technology that will manage the microgrid – something that will make your electric panel smart,” says Gunderson. “We have to do more than just flipping breakers on and off. We maximize technology like solar, battery storage or wind.”

“It’s nice being in control – especially when it comes to options around power management. These days more and more homeowners are intent on having clean energy homes.” – CANDACE HOFFMAN Business Development Manager, BRAVAS

With the help and expertise of BRAVAS, Savant can dynamically manage a power load. This gives customer flexibility to not only save money but also create greater efficiency by setting their home to “eco mode” or “island mode” if they don’t want to be tied to the main grid for a stretch of time. You can easily push a button on your phone to take the house off the main grid and be on your backup supply. Having this technological knowledge helps differentiate BRAVAS in the Indianapolis market because they have the capability with Savant to supply this to their builders and clients. Gunderson, who covers 15 states and Canada for Savant, is seeing an increased number of builders who recognize the value in this technology, and BRAVAS is right there to help lead the way with their expertise, supplying this modern technology. “We get a lot of requests from builders who understand why this is needed and are jumping all over it,” says Gunderson. Still, confusion abounds as one company supplies a generator to a house while another company supplies solar. That solar company may add batteries…or maybe not. It is important to keep things unified so that when they are brought to the job site, a builder is not left with three independent things that don’t work together. BRAVAS, whose team is seasoned in integrating systems in homes, takes whatever the sub-system is in a house and finds a way to integrate it together so that it works seamlessly. It is estimated that the landscape will look quite different in a year or two as the adoption rate on managing these energy systems grows. With the possibility of it being 10, 20, to even a 40% increase, BRAVAS is ready and able to help. To learn more about taking control of your energy use, contact the experts at BRAVAS.

Improve Your Life with a Room Addition by Christy Heitger-Ewing / photos by Home360

Room Addition Ideas: • Extra bedrooms   • Home offices  • Multi-seasonal additions   • Gyms • Special projects

NEED MORE SPACE, BUT DON’T WANT TO MOVE? Add some square footage with a barn, pool house, additional garage, or a walk-out basement.

Our homes are our sanctuaries, but do you ever wish that you had a little more space to move around, work, cook, or entertain? We may love our homes but desire a slightly larger version. That doesn’t mean, however, that the notion of moving houses sounds appealing– especially in today’s competitive housing market. If you feel like you’re one room addition away from having your dream home, the solution is simple. Growing families want more space, especially in these changing times. “Some homeowners desperately need a

home office – or two – now that more remote work is occurring,” says Jake Koepkey, room addition manager for Custom Concrete. “Additional square footage is a great way to elevate a dynamite house to a dream house.” The concept of a room addition may look different than what was envisioned a decade ago. For instance, a room addition may include a barn or shed with concrete flooring that will be used as a home gym or yoga studio. It may be a specialized porch, a detached garage, or a pool house.   “Any project that increases square

footage, your home’s value, and your joy is a great room addition project,” says Koepkey. It all comes down to adding value to your space and bettering your life. Perhaps you’ve always wanted a walk-out basement for entertaining or additional garage space to store mowers, heavy equipment, or other gear. These amenities may not have been an option when you first purchased the home, but Custom Concrete can make these dreams a reality. Are you thinking about a room addition this year? Contact Jake with your foundation questions at (317) 710-4373 or jakek@customconcrete. com. For more information on Custom Concrete, visit their site at customconcrete.com.

STONE MART:

Upgrading Your Outdoor Living Space?

Think Porcelain! by Shari Held

Porcelain may be newer to the market than natural stone or quartz, but it’s rapidly gaining in popularity – and with good reason. Porcelain is stain-, scratch-, and heat-resistant, making it easy to clean and maintain. It is also hygienic, due to its non-porous surface, and an eco-friendly product. All these reasons make it a great material to use in kitchen and bath designs. Often people don’t consider porcelain as a viable option for their outdoor projects, but it is a very durable material that is resistant to high temperatures, UV rays, thermal shock and humidity, chemicals, and the growth of mold and fungi. “Porcelain is ideal for outside spaces,” says Kaelyn Van Camp, Marketing Manager for Stone Mart, a wholesale supplier of natural stone and engineered materials. “You can use it for exterior cladding, patios, countertops in outdoor kitchens, pool walkouts, and more.” While porcelain has many practical attributes, its eye-catching visual impact is enough reason to consider incorporating it into your next project. The brands that Stone Mart carries offer material in a variety of design styles and patterns – even the popular marble-like designs. “Some colors have slabs with two or more different faces, or designs, and when these Porcelain is often used in kitchens and bathrooms due to its durability, but it’s an ideal option for outdoor spaces as well.

slabs are put side-by-side, it looks like it’s one large slab,” Van Camp says. “It’s a really nice feature that allows the design to continuously flow.” So, when you’re looking to create an outdoor living area or update the look of your existing outdoor space, think porcelain! And, start at Stone Mart today! Ask your fabricator or contractor about visiting the experts at Stone Mart to find the perfect porcelain material to inspire your outdoor oasis.

HOME INDUSTRY TRENDS

HOME ARTISANS OF INDIANA:

2022 HOME INDUSTRY TRENDS When it comes to our homes, more homeowners want to create escape-worthy spaces that are not only uplifting but conducive to our health and wellbeing. We also rely on trustworthy businesses like the members of Home Artisans to stay up to date on the latest industry trends. 2022 home industry trends reflect a desire for design that captures energy and optimism, elevating our mood, and aesthetic, for the year ahead.

TOP 2022 HOME INDUSTRY TRENDS 1. OUTDOOR LIVING Another home industry trend that’s carrying over from 2021 is the focus on luxe outdoor spaces. More homeowners want these “rooms” to feel like extensions of their indoor living areas. Today’s outdoor kitchens feature commercial-grade ranges and grills, refrigerators, wet bars, wine coolers, and more. Touches such as discrete speakers and television screens further blur the lines between indoors and out. Add a firepit, fireplace, or efficient heating system, and you have an ideal yearround experience.

2. THE HOME OFFICE: STILL ON OUR MIND The past few years have brought a marked drive towards enhanced home office spaces. One of the spaces that people are turning to more in 2022 is their closets. The “cloffice” transforms a closet, cupboard, nook, or corner into a fully functional office – and the results can be stunning! California Closets, long-time Home Artisans member, can help you revamp your walk-in or home office. Their professional designers can assist you in adding plenty of built-in shelves, drawers, and organizational systems allowing you to work and/or show off your collection of couture, shoes, bags, and beauty products. 3. EMBRACING THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL Homeowners are embracing bold design again, eschewing muted colors for bright, happy hues that bring joy to a space. Design thought leaders expect to see everything from peacock blue and citrus green to burnt orange and tropicalinspired pinks. Also putting a smile on more people’s faces: wallpaper. It has been making its way back since 2020, and this year, we’ll see more bold, patterned, textured options that show off the homeowners’ personality. 4. FRESH LOOKS WITH UP-AND-COMING ARTISTS How many homes or businesses have you set foot in, only to lay eyes on the same prints and pieces? Local and custom art is more accessible than ever and a great way to elevate your home’s style. Homeowners want art that is evocative of the diversity of our world, and its perspectives, as well as pieces that tell a story.

5. SEAMLESS TECH SOLUTIONS FROM START TO FINISH Technology is certainly not a new trend for 2022, but it is at the forefront of many minds. Technology is integrated into the design from the get-go to ensure the homeowner’s experience is seamless. Features include centralized video hubs, discrete speakers, wifi repeaters, specialized outlets (e.g. Ultra-Fast Plus Power Delivery with USB-C), systems integration, one-app control over everything, and more.

BE INSPIRED — AND GET THE JOB DONE! The beauty of delving into 2022 home industry trends is that they can spark ideas and inspiration for your own spaces. Whether it’s warm and cozy or big and bold, the skilled craftspeople and artisans you need are all waiting for you at Home Artisans of Indiana. Connect with the professionals who will bring your visions to life.

TREND ALERT! Bold colors, patterned wallpaper, and custom artwork that tells a story will all be trending in 2022.

NORTHSTAR SURFACES:

ALL ABOUT MARBLE:

Your Guide to Enduring Quality & Beauty As we all know, fads come and fade. What’s hot today may definitely not be tomorrow. Marble has a 2000+ year history in homes and architecture. As far as trends go, it’s safe to say this one is here to stay! While there are ebbs and flows in popularity, marble offers exceptional, and enduring, quality and beauty. Is it right for your home? THE LOWDOWN ON MARBLE Marble is a metamorphic rock, which means it was formed in conditions of intense heat and pressure. It is composed of calcite crystals, which are white, as well as colored grains of mica, clay, quartz, pyrite, iron oxides, and graphite. Depending on the minerals present, the marble can take on a pink, brown, gray, green, or variegated color. The purest forms of marble are white, but we often see beautiful veining in different hues. In comparison with other natural stones, marble is somewhat less hard (3-5 on the Mohs scale as opposed to 6-8 for granite) and it is more porous than granite. These are important considerations to keep in mind as well as the many benefits of choosing marble surfaces for your home.

BENEFITS OF MARBLE SURFACES  Beauty and Uniqueness There is no denying the elegance and class of marble. Its smooth, sleek beauty lends itself well to a variety of aesthetics, particularly modern, contemporary, and transitional styles. It is also unique: no two slabs of marble are identical, so you get a truly custom look and feel in your home.  Durability There is a reason marble has enjoyed centuries of use: it is built to last! Yes, it is more porous than stones like granite, but properly sealed, installed, and maintained, your investment in countertops or other surfaces will deliver returns for decades to come.  Heat Resistant Marble was formed under conditions of unimaginable heat and pressure deep in the Earth. It can handle life in your kitchen or bathroom! In fact, forms like Carrara can withstand heat of up to 480℉. So, if you accidentally put a hot dish or styling tool down, don’t panic.

 Versatility Marble is suitable for a host of applications in the home from kitchen and bath counters and backsplashes to fireplace surrounds, flooring, shower enclosures, and even accent walls.

Be sure to speak with Northstar Surfaces about your needs and goals; our expert team is happy to help you select the right marble solutions for exceptional results. When you are planning a home improvement project, the details make the dream come true. From countertops and islands to tub surrounds and flooring, marble delivers the style, versatility, beauty, and durability you need. Northstar Surfaces prides itself on carrying unique slabs that cannot be found anywhere else. Our owners personally select and inspect each piece to ensure the highest quality. HOME COMFORT

JOHNSON-MELLOH INC.:

Get Comfortable! by Suzanne Huntzinger

The name Johnson-Melloh has been synonymous with providing mechanical services and contracting for over 45 years. But their reputation has come more from not limiting themselves to that model. Instead, they’re known for expanding their services to find solutions that meet the needs of their clients. Providing comfort to commercial facilities and residential homes is Johnson-Melloh’s business. They do it by focusing on creating energy efficiency. Their professionals dig deeper than just designing a system that controls the indoor air temperature. Engineering and Sales Professional, Henry Nichols explains, “Comfort can be elusive, but think of it this way. If I heat the air in my

home but the floor I am standing on is cold, I will be cold. But if the floor beneath me is warm, my toes will be, too. The air temperature doesn’t matter quite as much. When you’re heating this way, the cost to create comfort is less.” Johnson-Melloh Mechanical traditionally focuses on large mechanical plumbing and HVAC systems for commercial and institutional users. Schools and healthcare systems are among their typical client list. However, since they’re in the business to create solutions, they are also involved in residential projects. They partner with the Indiana residential HVAC dealer network to round out the consumer’s needs

for additional comfort options like heated driveways, warm floors, or swimming pool heaters. The traditional residential HVAC dealer does air side delivery very well, and Johnson-Melloh designs and installs the additional comfort options. “My team does a great job of applying our technical elements. The technicians are extremely astute when it comes to putting together things like pipes and wires, pumps and boilers,” Nichols says, “But the greatest skill is the artistry that they employ during the installation. Every system requires attention to detail because every space is specific. Their challenge is to use creativity to design a system that maximizes functionality in the space given, and

integrate that into the installation too.” The end result is a system that works effectively and efficiently inside the space. Find out how you can get more comfortable in your space. Contact the professionals at Johnson-Melloh for a consultation in comfort. Call (317) 244-5993, or visit their website at johnsonmelloh.com for more details.

MIDWEST FASHION WEEK

Classy & Casual: MIDWEST FASHION WEEK’S TRIUMPHANT RETURN by Suzanne Huntzinger / photos from Paris fashion show during the Paris Fashion Week

Midwesterners may be more laid back and casual than those who live in highfashion cities from New York to LA to Paris and Milan, but we have a sense of style all our own. Plans for Midwest Fashion Week 2022 are in the works, returning to an in-person show after a long hiatus. The show, which showcases quintessential Midwestern style, has been virtual for the past two years due to the recent pandemic. Berny Martin, Founder of Midwest Fashion Week, and other local fashion industry leaders have decided to start making plans for a Fall show after an uncertain start to the year. While no official date or location has been announced, Martin and his team are ready to move forward with a show that will focus on all that Midwest Fashion Week has accomplished since its humble beginnings in 2006. The past 16 years have been a journey starting with a simple compilation of available clothing lines versus a focus on specific designers. But each year, the show integrated more lines from specific designers. “Once the people in Indy became intrigued, the rest of the industry wanted to know who was involved and it grew in popularity,” Martin says. While Midwest Fashion Week doesn’t bring the high numbers that New York does, Martin has always made it to be a show that highlights a broad range of pieces including wedding wear, casual wear, career wear and children’s wear.

“In New York, it’s not uncommon to see women wearing headpieces, or afghans, and very daring pieces” Martin says, “But here the culture is more relaxed, and the fashions are more conservative, comfortable and functional. We want to articulate who we are on the runway.” A VISION FOR THE DIVERSITY OF MIDWEST STYLE Martin’s vision for the event is to show the world Midwestern culture through fashion. “It’s our opportunity to express our culture on a global scale,” he says. “New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and other international arenas have a more flashy, glamorous style. But the conservative Midwest has a more casual vibe. Our show features the functional but classy designs that define who we are and it’s time to stake our claim in the industry.” While the Midwest’s style has always been more comfortable and functional, the global pandemic has added another layer to the designs that will be featured in the 2022 Midwest Fashion Week. “So many people are working from home, and they wear more active wear or loungewear,” Martin says, “This is our chance to influence the global market with the style the Midwest already defined.” The show will do much more than just capture the trends of the Midwest. It will prove that the Midwest is also very diverse. “There is a stereotype that the Midwest has no diversity. Proving our own diversity and fashion has always been one of our challenges. But in the Midwest, Minneapolis has United States’ largest Somalian population, and Indianapolis has a large Asian population,” Martin says, “We have to connect the bridges to celebrate diversity.” Martin has been an ambassador for that diversity starting with the models. He explains, “Our models come from very diverse backgrounds. Some are Muslim, Hindu, or Asian, and they see the differences within each other as they express themselves and their culture. They take that and pass it along on the runway.” Additionally, he has worked closely with the International Marketplace Coalition to give local designers of diverse backgrounds a much needed platform to showcase their designs. This fall, Berny and his team will work to showcase the diversity of cultures and trendsetting styles that exist in the Midwest. Visit midwestfashionweek.com to stay up to date and find details for attending the Fall 2022 show.

“Our show features the functional but classy designs that define who we are and it’s time to stake our claim in the industry.” – BERNY MARTIN Founder, Midwest Fashion Week

The new team of seven, now known as the Sears and Syrus Realty Group, brings years of experience to the table. Principal Brokers Lisa Sears of the Sears Realty Group, Lindsay Sears of the Sears Team, and Zach Syrus of Syrus Realty lead the new Compass team as of March 1, 2022. Given the ever-evolving nature of the real estate industry, Sears and Syrus knew how beneficial combining their three very successful teams would be. This dynamic merger brings together some of the best talent with a vast array of knowledge and strengths. Combining these forces allows the team to cover all facets of the industry. The three Principal Brokers laid the foundation for their new team’s success while keeping the client experience as their number one priority. The level of dedication each team player contributes is unmatchable. From sun up to sun down they get it handled. “No two clients have the same needs or desires, and it’s our job to listen to our client’s and deliver beyond expectation,” Zach, Lisa and Lindsay say, “Let us do what we do best, while our clients continue living life.” Lisa Sears has been selling real estate since 1991. Along with her husband, Rod Sears, she previously owned and managed a RE/MAX franchise. Rod brings to the table years of experience as a custom builder and master carpenter by trade. Now retired from building and carpentry, Rod is focused only on selling real estate. The couple are long-time residents of the Geist area with three daughters and four grandchildren. Daughter Lindsay Sears was born and raised in the industry. She’s been selling real estate for 14 years. A resident of McCordsville and outdoor enthusiast, Lindsay is married with two children. Zach Syrus has been actively involved in the real estate industry, selling for more than 8 years. He’s a Geist resident and married with a beautiful daughter. Chanel Esters has already made her mark in the two years she’s been in the industry. The former rookie of the year at a previous brokerage is an Indianapolis native and lover of all charitable events. SEARS AND SYRUS Millie Akers brings five years of experience REALTY GROUP to the table. A big team player, she holds a real 317.518.6671 estate license in Indiana and Arizona where she searsandsyrusrealty.com 6 2 H AV E N

But he’s no stranger to client relations and sales. Prior to real estate, Adan had a robust career as a master salesman. He’s a Fishers resident, and happily married with four amazing children. Along with the team’s vast experience and knowledge, the backing of the strong Compass brand offers them another tool for success; Compass Concierge.
