First Mate Adrian, seasoned and wise and known as Captain Sensible to many, keeps a weather eye on the high seas and the welfare of seafarers and landlubbers alike. He knows the waters around Havelet like the back of his hand and is often seen out on patrol, carving neat furrows across the bay. He’s been known to push unruly beachgoers through an obstacle course under the ship’s infamous blue tarpaulin, but beneath that rugged tough exterior, Adrian’s got a heart of gold.
Pirates and privateers forced people to part with their money at the end of a sword, but Barrie uses nothing but a keyboard, the odd cup of coffee and a knack for persuasion. Barrie maintains order and discipline aboard the good ship Havelet Regatta and keeps her afloat, financially, he also knows where the treasure is buried.
Joseph by name, craftsman by nature, problem solver by necessity, and fun maker par excellence. Renowned for his practicality and infectious enthusiasm, Joseph is always ready with a solution. Whether he’s crafting, fixing, or making merry, Joseph brings unparalleled joy and expertise, devising devious and dastardly ways to have fun on the sand... though ducking, keelhauling, and walking the plank have been ruled out!
Pretty in Pink Leonie is the committee’s quality control and compliance champion, renowned for her meticulous attention to detail. With an eagle eye that misses nothing, she dots every ‘i’ and crosses every ‘t.’ Like a ship’s compass, Leonie keeps everything perfectly aligned and shipshape. Her presence calms choppy seas making her an indispensable anchor for the team.
Perched in her eyrie, Mary Ellen ensures not a doubloon is wasted. Pressed into service aboard the ship, she sails with unwavering gusto, fearlessly asking the questions others dare not whisper. Her perceptive insight and sharp wit lighten every moment, captivating both crew and spectators alike. Mary Ellen revives weary spirits with uproarious anecdotes and a treasury of wisdom.
Meet Molly, the vibrant chronicler, Queen of the Quills, of the Havelet Regatta committee! As the mastermind behind all our social media posts, Molly ensures every exciting development and milestone is broadcast far and wide. Come regatta day, she and her crew will be everywhere, capturing and sharing the action in real-time, much like naval ships signalling with flag hoists of old.
When she’s not charting courses through uncharted waters, Odette orchestrates events with the precision of a seasoned sailor and brings wacky ideas and innovative solutions to our regatta. With a compass in one hand and a flapjack in the other, she navigates planning meetings with finesse. Her powers of persuasion are reminiscent of Captain Pugwash himself, with a nod and a wink rallying a crew faster than you can say “Ahoy, matey!”
A legend in his own lifetime, Paul brings the flair of a master impresario to the regatta. As a verbal virtuoso, he effortlessly finds the “mot juste” for every occasion and will wow you over the tannoy throughout the day. With an eye for detail, he ensures safety with a smile. An original thinker, a champion of our teachers, a master of the high seas. This wily sea-dog’s prowess as an oarsman is matched only by his talent for orchestrating memorable events.
Sarah loves community, fun, and high jinks on the high seas. Combining her passion for cooking and organising, running the tea tent is a dream come true. Always glamorous, she might seem like she’s just swanned out of first class, but don’t be deceived, Sarah has probably rewired a kettle, unblocked a sink and whipped up a batch of cupcakes before you even noticed. She’s thrilled to bring her boundless energy and culinary talents to the Havelet Regatta, ensuring everyone enjoys a fantastic time and plenty of delicious treats.

From when we learnt of the inaugural event being organised last summer, we were delighted to be invited to sponsor the Havelet Regatta, in support of the Guernsey Cheshire Home which is a wonderful charity deserving of support.
While we provide international solutions for marine employment, we are especially proud of our island home, and it is a
The team at Voyonic are delighted to be joining the committee and members of the public for another fun day out whilst raising much-needed funding for a very worthy cause.
FOR nearly 40 years, The Guernsey Cheshire Home has been providing care for those with serious physical disabilities, all without direct funding from the States of Guernsey. To understand what a task this is, the Home has to fundraise at least £600,000 a year to maintain the level of care their 11 full-time residents and a number of respite visitors need, to experience as close to a family atmosphere as possible.
Colin, one of the Home’s residents who has been living at Shorncliffe for 22 years, said: “[Any] money raised means a lot, as the staff at the Home are very good to us.” The team of helpers not only provide personal care for the residents but they
The Home’s Manager Lianne Larkin said that while it is so lovely to plan events for the residents, the larger inclusive events are few and far between: “There are a very limited number of events we can go to with our residents - we are very restricted with accessibility in Guernsey,” she said. “Wellbeing on Guernsey...It is a beautiful island to live on, but it is very behind, such as with wheelchair access; It is a struggle.”
With this in mind, the Havelet Regatta was created in 2023 as a fundraising event for The Guernsey Cheshire Home, placing accessibility and sustainability at its core. Several residents were able to attend the inaugural event and were seen around Havelet Bay collecting money, adding
performances at the end of the day. Long-term resident Robbie said: “I loved it - people were very generous and my favourite part was the singing and the cider,” as Colin agreed: “It was lovely to have a sing along, I especially loved singing the sea shanties but my favourite song is Maggie May by Rod Stewart.”
Last year’s fundraising efforts saw £7,000 given to the Home, which is enough to cover the cost of slings for the residents for a year. Therefore, with dreams to raise even more money at the second Havelet Regatta (second the best, after all), please give anything you can and come and say hello to the residents in the red Guernsey Cheshire Home tops throughout the day.

Just as quickly as the Guernsey tides rise and fall, a whole year has already passed since the inaugural Havelet Regatta in 2023 where lots of laughs were shared and memories were made on land, sand and sea. It echoes the Victor Hugo quote in which ‘there are two kinds...tillers of the land and toilers of the sea,’ with teams working incredibly hard to lift the first trophy of the office chair relay race and adrenaline seekers sprint climbing to the top of the climbing wall to sea swimmers and kiddos competing in all manners of beach games - every effort last year was truly valued.
As well as being a last hurrah before schools go back and an event centred around sustainable and accessible family fun in St Peter Port, at heart, the Havelet Regatta beats to raise money for The Guernsey Cheshire Home. Last year, everyone who came to add tiles to our mosaic pots, build sandcastles or boogied along with Belles and Broomsticks among our other amazing music acts, was able to raise approximately £7,000 for the local disability support service and so this year and for the future, we hope to build upon this.
Not only are the Regatta Committee trying to build on the fund-raising endeavours but also we are working to go above and beyond for the day’s entertainment to make it a perfect closing
chapter to this year’s summer. It is very exciting to think about the saying, ‘first the worst, second the best’ as 2023 was such a success in the Committee’s eyes, that this year with a few changes and improvements, the event could just keep getting better and better... Although it is a year on, the team behind the scenes have been hard at work for nearly six months and we thank everyone who has donated their time and efforts, supplied key moving parts for the event or simply spent time having a chat with us around Guernsey while we were spreading word about the second instalment of the Havelet Regatta.
The Guernsey Cheshire Home and the Havelet Regatta Committee would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the sponsors and volunteers for their invaluable support, as well as to the following who have generously contributed their time, expertise, and additional resources.

Excerpt from Channel Fish
2 kilo/4 lbs mussels
3 tbsp chopped parsley
2 cloves garlic
150 ml/5fl oz white wine
1 onion 30g/1 oz butter
Salt & Pepper
In a large saucepan, very gently simmer the finely chopped onion and garlic in the wine for 10-15 minutes. I don’t add any water as a lot will come out of the mussels and you only have to reduce it later.
Now add the cleaned mussels, put the lid on and allow to steam gently for 5 minutes. Shake the saucepan now and again. Tip into a colander to drain, reserving the liquor. Discard any mussels that have not opened.
If necessary, boil the liquid until reduced so that you have about 150 ml/5fl oz. Gradually, whisk in the butter and add half the parsley before seasoning.
Tip the mussels into a large bowl, pour the sauce over and sprinkle in the remaining parsley. Ladle into warmed bowls.
Crusty bread and a chilled Muscadet are all that is needed.
In Normandy, cider may be used instead of wine and cream is stirred into the sauce instead of butter.
To eat mussels, it is perfectly acceptable to use an empty, hinged shell between your finger and thumb to extract the meat from the mussels. Don’t forget a large empty bowl for shells to discard and a bowl of warm water to rinse your fingers at the end of the hearty meal.
We’ve got plenty to keep you keep you fuelled and refreshed throughout the day.
Indulge in the finest High Seas Tea and Cake, where each slice of cake is crafted with care. Pair it with a selection of teas. Every purchase supports The Guernsey Cheshire Home, making every bite even sweeter.
We’ve got premium coffee vendors ready to serve up your favourite brew. Quench your thirst with locally brewed delights from The Little Big Brew Co. and Rocquette Cider, offering a variety of beers and ciders, that celebrate local flavours and craftsmanship, as well as wine and soft drinks.
Treat yourself to cool scoops of ice cream, indulge in decadent chocolate delights –there’s something to satisfy every sweet tooth. Enjoy a range of hot foods, from classic Fish & Chips to Chefan Burgers and Asian cuisine.

The staff and residents of the Guernsey Cheshire Home thank the organising committee and attendees of the Havelet Regatta. We would like to reiterate our gratitude for your crucial support.
Lianne Larkin, Home Manager, explains the importance of the funds raised at the event;
“Without any direct States funding, every bit of the funds we raise are vital to the running of the Home. The funding pays for all the essential equipment and specialist care our residents need. In addition to this, it enables us to facilitate activities for our residents, day visitors and the wider community who live with complex physical disabilities.”
The consideration of accessibility meant that several of our residents and service users could get involved at the Regatta last year, and they had a great time doing so. The Havelet Regatta is arguably the most inclusive event in Guernsey’s summer calendar, and we appreciate how central that is to their ethos.
“There aren’t many events we can all go to because there is no access for people with physical disabilities. The Havelet Regatta was great because there were lots of things we could all do and take part in. I loved the music and having a dance,” resident Colin Elliston.
Fellow resident Julie Broome added;
“It was great to see so many families enjoying themselves and all raising money for a great cause. I would be lost without the love and care of the Cheshire Home”
Whilst enjoying a fun day out by the sea, you are also supporting a life-changing cause. If you wish to make an additional donation you can scan the QR code on this page and do so online. Our residents, service users and staff would appreciate it more than you know!
