Welcome to the inaugural Havelet Regatta. It may be our first, but we hope that it will be the first of many and will one day become a Guernsey institution. In early spring, a group of likeminded individuals who are passionate about the community, our wonderful natural resources and helping others, came together to work out how to bring a new regatta to life. Starting from scratch, we’ve learned a lot along the way. It has been a steep learning curve, but it has been great fun.
Once upon a time it was rare to see people swimming in Havelet or children building sandcastles on the beach. How times have changed. Havelet is now abuzz with activity. From ‘have-a-go’ rows to sailing classes. From freestylers doing laps of the bay to sedate bathers gliding as they chat. From paddleboarders to kayakers, from foil surfers to yachts there is constant activity in the bay. With all this going on already, a regatta just made perfect sense.
Other bays have their charm of course, and it might be an urban myth, but apparently the water is warmer in Havelet. Castle Cornet and the huge Castle Emplacement wall provide lots of shelter, and, made of granite, they both absorb and radiate back the warmth of the sun’s rays in a continuous cycle. In addition to it being in a sheltered position most of the time (Havelet literally means little harbour) and having acres of glistening sand, Havelet is super accessible. With the bus terminus right next door and ample parking for bikes and cars people from all over the island can make their way to Havelet.
There are all types of regattas, some are very exclusive and fiercely competitive. At the Havelet
Regatta we’re not exclusive at all, in fact, we’re the opposite - everyone is welcome and, where possible, we are taking steps to include events that everyone can participate in. And while there will be an element of competition and an opportunity for sportspersons to excel, the emphasis is 100% on enjoyment. We wholeheartedly believe in the magic of people actively coming together to have fun playing silly games and taking part in unfancy activities. We believe that some of the best times can be had when we are a spectator one moment and then all of a sudden, we take the plunge and become a participant.
We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers that are giving their time before, during and after the actual day to make things happen. We’d like to thank our wonderful sponsor Voyonic for putting their faith in us and agreeing to underwrite the event. Without their very generous support this regatta would not be happening. We’d also like to thank the Rocquaine Regatta committee and team of helpers for their support and encouragement.
And last, but not least, we’d like you to thank you for coming to the regatta.
We hope you have a fantastic day!
From the first time we learnt of the new event being organised, we were delighted to be invited to sponsor the Havelet Regatta, in support of the Guernsey Cheshire Home which is a wonderful charity deserving of support.
While we provide international solutions for marine employment, we are especially proud of our island home, and it’s a pleasure to be involved.
The team at Voyonic are delighted to be joining Barrie & Odette for a fun day out whilst raising much-needed funding for a very worthy cause.
The Guernsey Cheshire Home would like to thank the organisers, sponsors and attendees of the Havelet Regatta for their support with the exciting addition of this event to our fundraising calendar.
We have one aim: to provide care and opportunity for people with profound physical disabilities in as close to a family atmosphere as possible.
The Home first opened its doors in 1987 and was the brainchild of a group of pioneering islanders who recognised the need for a dedicated care facility for those local residents suffering from severe physical disability.
They wanted to create an environment far removed from the geriatric facility that many people with disability resided within at that time. A Steering Committee was appointed and together they raised enough money from donations to buy
and then refurbish a property in the Rohais, St Peter Port called Shorncliffe.
It provides a home for people who need constant care and are unable to live in their own homes. Equally important though, is the preservation of dignity and individual independence, and providing residents the absolute right to live a life of their own choosing within a family environment, focusing on their ability and helping them live as fulfilling a lifestyle as possible.
Today, Shorncliffe is home to 11 full-time residents and a number of respite visitors all managing the challenge of severe physical disability aged from their 20s to 80s. The home provides full-time care for Bailiwick residents suffering from many severe physical disabilities including multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, spinal injuries, arthritis and the devastating effects of permanent paralysis.
The Home provides a real family atmosphere where residents have their own rooms, decorated and furnished how they want. Activities are provided every day including trips out, all with a focus on living an independent and rewarding life, something they would never receive in a hospital environment.
The Home also provides specialist medical care with registered nurses, physiotherapists and posture specialists a vital part of the team. The home provides trips out through our volunteer carers and activity staff. There is a fleet of disabled vehicles the residents can call upon whenever they require a visit away from the Home.
It may come as some surprise that the Guernsey Cheshire Home receives no direct funding from either the States of Guernsey or the Leonard Cheshire Disability Charity. Therefore, the Home must raise £1,100,000 every year to maintain this level of care and service.
Through the kind donations of islanders and an extensive calendar of fundraising activity, the Home can sustain its viability. Without the Guernsey Cheshire Home, these islanders living with the effects of disability would have a very
different and difficult existence in Guernsey.
One of our residents, Charlie Trebilcock, has called Shorncliffe home for the past nine years and appreciates how much of a difference the charity has made in his life. He explains;
“From day one this environment just gives you this feeling of euphoria. This Home is everything to me.
“If this Home didn’t exist, I’d be in an old people’s home. That doesn’t sound very appealing.”
One of several inspiring residents who live their life on the best terms possible despite their disability, Charlie’s quality of life simply would not be possible if the Home was not operating.
Day patient Sean Simms appreciates being able to relate to other wheelchair users when he spends time at the Home and is grateful for the respite it provides for his partner.
“It gives my partner a chance to have a bit of time away from me, so she’s got some downtime as well. It might only be five or six hours but it lets her relax and know that she doesn’t have to worry about me.”
There are many ways that you can support the home financially as an individual, or for your company to become a supporter.
During the Regatta there will be volunteers with buckets and SumUp machines making collections for the home. Several of the food and beverage vendors have agreed to donate a share of their takings on the day, so you can do your bit for the home by just enjoying the Regatta.
If you’d like to donate by card, you can visit guernseycheshirehome.org and click the Donate button, or scan the QR code on the right.
Also on our website, you can enter the Dream Holiday Draw, one of the home’s most popular
initiatives. For just £10 per ticket with all proceeds going to the Home, you will be entered into a draw to win your bespoke holiday of a lifetime.
Prize draw is open to residents of the Bailiwick of Guernsey only, aged 18 years and older. Full T&Cs online.

As well as the island’s community having fun with the sound of laughter and the ocean filling Havelet Bay, the first Havelet Regatta seeks to provide an inclusive and sustainable event at the end of summer.
Supported by Voyonic and raising funds for the Guernsey Cheshire Home, the St Peter Port-based regatta will bring games, local music and more to land, sand and sea.
Havelet Regatta’s chairperson Odette Duerden is hoping for the inaugural event to create ‘simple pleasures’ for islanders while not having a big impact on the environment.
She said: “I think there is something incredibly special about coming together and just having fun, creating moments where everybody can forget about daily worries, have a laugh and mess around playing games.
“It is not a sophisticated thing - it is the spirit of community and we would like to break down barriers by making our event as inclusive as possible with activities suited to all. Everybody can have a go at pretty much everything.”
With Guernsey’s town and Castle Cornet acting as the backdrop to the event, Odette, a long-time town resident, believes that Havelet Bay is the perfect place for everyone to access and enjoy the seaside fun of a classic regatta.
Odette added that the Havelet Regatta puts a lot of focus on staying green: “Big events can have a big impact on the environment, everybody who has already signed up is trying to do this as sustainably as possible and are very keen to make the most of the natural resources. It is DIY fun.”
We hope you enjoy the inaugural Havelet Regatta in the last taste of summer sun.

The Fun-Swim-Run is a new event created for the Regatta. We have taken inspiration from the popular swim and run events that have recently come to the Channel Islands.
Most of these involve some serious racing and scrambling on the coastline with tough running stretches, but we have adapted this to a fun sprintstyle team event which doesn’t require a tough training regime!
Pairs of swim-runners will be tethered with a bungee cord attached to a belt, so the competitors must complete the course together. Teamwork is everything.
Participants will negotiate obstacles and challenges on the beach and dash into the water to
swim around a short course while avoiding getting snarled up with their nearest rivals. Quick thinking and good teamwork will be just as important as quick feet.
The pairs will sprint out and then swap the tether system with their teammates who will repeat the course. There will be plenty of action to see on the sand with a mad rush getting in and out of the water as they jostle for position and swap over to their other pair.
There will be some prizes to encourage them to get into the spirit, but this new event is primarily a chance to have some fun getting covered in sand and splashing around the course.

Competing teams will channel their inner Andy Priaulx by propelling themselves to victory on our racetrack. Will they show up with their own souped-up models, or take to the track on one of our old bangers?
For the past decade, Japan has hosted the Isu-1 Grand Prix series in which chair racers give blood, sweat and tears to complete the most laps in two hours (‘isu’ being Japanese for ‘chair’). Our version might not be quite as gruelling, but wacky action is guaranteed here at Havelet, and we can’t wait to see it unfold!
Could we see the emergence of a well-oiled racing team, or just pure chaos? Anything could happen in Guernsey’s first running of this exciting event!
On your marks, get set…
