This annual report celebrates the $49 million raised in support of current and future healthcare needs and the more than $16.5 million disbursed to our hospitals, institutes and programs, providing them with the support required to reach new heights in patient care, treatment, clinical education, research and development.

Supporting Excellence and Innovation Healthcare organizations worldwide rely on philanthropic support for investigatorinitiated research. This critical funding helps drive innovation and discoveries, develop prevention strategies and treatments, and advance methodologies in patient care.

Acknowledging the importance of research, CC Homes, one of South Florida’s largest home builders led by Jim Carr and Armando Codina, made a $1 million gift to Baptist Health to be divided among Miami Cancer Institute, Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, Miami Neuroscience Institute and Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. The gift was made in honor of Baptist Health’s

soon-to-be-retired CEO Brian E. Keeley, and his vision in establishing Baptist Health as a leader in healthcare and research.

As Baptist Health’s current board chair, Jim felt a special connection to this gift. “I’ve been involved with Baptist Health for over 30 years and have had the great pleasure of watching it grow into a nationally recognized healthcare system,” he stated. “With its Institutes and Programs, it is addressing and influencing how we treat serious diseases. We have also had the great fortune to meet many of Baptist Health’s physicians and researchers, and understand that philanthropy is the fuel that ignites these ideas and novel research programs. A Big Year for Baptist Health Innovations 2021 marked a big year for Baptist Health Innovations — with two million-dollar gifts from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, also known as the Knight Foundation, and Argosy Foundation.

The $1 million grant from the Knight Foundation established the Knight Foundation Fellowship in Healthcare Technology Innovation — a non-clinical, yearlong fellowship to attract, train and

Celebrated May 6-12, Nurses Week is an annual event to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in modern healthcare.

Community Support Twelve-year-old Jonah Harwin wanted to make a difference in his community and reached out to Baptist Health Foundation hoping to raise money for our COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.

Being in quarantine and unable to practice with his soccer team, Jonah continued to practice on his own and reached a personal record of over 10,000 juggles of a soccer ball. This sparked his idea to “Kick for COVID Relief.” For every dollar raised, Jonah juggled a soccer ball.

A Son’s Love:

Cristy’s Cancer Crushers Hearing the news of his mom’s Stage IV lung cancer diagnosis was the hardest thing Javi Rosell has had to deal with. “It was devastating,” he recalls. “However, because of the amazing treatments and the amazing organization in Miami Cancer Institute, I was able to get through it, and she’s getting through it as we speak. I couldn’t ask for a better organization to treat my mom.”

Hoping to unite his two greatest loves, his mom and basketball, Javi jumped at the opportunity to participate in the HEAT. RAISED SINCE 2018 HELP. CURE. Bounce Back from Cancer™, an event benefiting the Institute in which participants dribble a basketball and earn RAISED IN 2021 pledges toward their fundraising goal. The Belen Jesuit Preparatory MORE THAN School varsity basketball captain RAISED BY JAVI’S TEAM: created a team named in her CRISTY’S CANCER CRUSHERS honor: Cristy’s Cancer Crushers.

Cristy is proud of her son and grateful to be a patient at the Institute. “I’m very thankful for the team of doctors that have guided me in my care,” she says. “The compassion and care that they offer to all of their patients is outstanding, and so we’re happy to say that eight months down the road, we really are crushing cancer and doing a great job. Thank you, Miami Cancer Institute.”

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT SCHOLARSHIP

PART OF MY FINAL CAPSTONE PROJECT WILL INVOLVE REVIEWING DATA FROM OUR CARDIOVASCULAR RISK REDUCTION PROGRAMS TO SHOW THAT WHAT WE ARE DOING IS HAVING A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR PATIENTS AND, ULTIMATELY, OUR COMMUNITY.”

A Baptist Health First:

Philanthropy Supports Physician Assistant Scholarship At Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, physician assistant (PA) Lisa Davis, PA-C, works closely with cardiologist and Chief Population Officer Jonathan Fialkow, M.D., where they are developing preventive cardiology programs for the community. Lisa had always envisioned going back to school, and as more doctorate programs became available for PAs, she knew it was time to jump at the opportunity.

Lisa is presently enrolled in A.T. Still University’s two-year, PA-specific Doctorate of Medical Science degree, designed by — and exclusively for — practicing physician assistants. She recalls specifically looking for a program that would complement her new responsibilities in helping develop and move these cardiovascular

programs forward at the Institute, and decided the leadership track within the doctorate program was the perfect fit.

Dr. Fialkow championed Lisa in her pursuit of a scholarship, which was funded by Baptist Health Foundation. “I’m very proud and humbled to say that I was the first PA at Baptist Health South Florida approved to receive a scholarship for a doctorate program,” says Lisa. “I hope that this ends up paving the way in creating similar opportunities for my fellow physician assistants.”

The program is helping expand her knowledge about community-based programs, something she is taking back to Baptist Health. “Part of my final Capstone Project will involve reviewing data from our cardiovascular risk reduction programs to show that what we are doing is having a positive impact on our patients and, ultimately, our community,” says Lisa.

She is grateful for the generosity of our donors in support of physician assistants, and she hopes to return the favor for future generations of Baptist Health PAs. 15

PINEAPPLE PAJAMA GALA

A Virtual Celebration:

Pineapple Pajama Gala More than 1,000 people participated in Baptist Health Foundation’s first-ever virtual Pineapple Pajama Gala, honoring Baptist Health’s inspiring healthcare heroes and their tireless efforts in caring for the South Florida community throughout the pandemic. The April 24 event raised more than $1.5 million to support advanced research, programs, resources and outstanding patient care at Baptist Health hospitals, Institutes and Programs, and outpatient facilities.

The Pineapple Pajama Gala featured a video tribute to Baptist Health’s clinical staff, messages from leaders, silent auction, cooking and mixology demos, musical performances, dinner and dancing to a “live” band. Guests were delivered multicourse gourmet meal packages complete with wine and cocktail ingredients, as well as “Fun Boxes” with the evening’s program and festive party swag. The dress code encouraged chic pajamas and loungewear.

As a result of the pandemic, many in our community have adjusted to working and socializing from home, often in pajamas.

The Pajama Gala was a vivid reminder of how fortunate many of us are to be safe at home while our healthcare workers serve on the front lines every day.

Pajamas and Fun Boxes aside, perhaps what made this virtual event so special was how the community came together, even from afar, to celebrate our dedicated heroes and generous donors, and to raise critical funds for Baptist Health. Though the Pineapple Pajama Gala was unconventional — completely reimagined for this unprecedented time — there was plenty of excitement among those who helped plan the event and those who participated. Even a pandemic could not dampen the collective joy of recognizing those who have given so much to all of us.

Every Patient Counts:

Manmeet Ahluwalia, M.D., on Why Philanthropy Matters In 2021, board-certified neuro-oncologist and medical oncologist Manmeet Ahluwalia, M.D., MBA, joined Miami Cancer Institute as deputy director, chief scientific officer and chief of solid tumor medical oncology.

Originally from India, Dr. Ahluwalia attributes his desire to become a cancer physician to his late grandmother. “When I was a 12-year-old kid, my grandmother was diagnosed with cervical cancer, and unfortunately she lost her life to the cancer,” he recalls. “I wanted to cure her, I wanted someone else to cure her, and when she unfortunately succumbed to the disease, as a naive young kid, I was like, I would go to the U.S. one day and I’d cure cancer.”

Dr. Ahluwalia is an ambassador for philanthropy who knows just how critical donor support is for the success of innovative programs. “As chief scientific officer, I want to support all the physicians working at Miami Cancer Institute to be the best physician they can be for their patients,” he says. “So I am very excited about the robust clinical trial infrastructure we are setting up to empower our physicians

to ensure that they have a highly innovative clinical trial for every patient that they will see in the clinic. Philanthropic gifts are transformative in pushing innovative efforts of large cancer programs anywhere in the United States and all across the world.”

Dr. Ahluwalia is excited to play an important role in elevating Miami Cancer Institute as a national leader in improving cancer care. He is often reminded of how he got to where he is today. “Every day I help a patient with cancer, to me it’s a gift because I’m giving back to my grandmother,” he says.

Jo Ann’s Story

Jo Ann Smith, a retired Baptist Health nurse, was experiencing unusual abdominal symptoms one evening. At first, she thought it was something minor, but when it persisted, she decided to contact her primary care physician Bernhard Brijbag, D.O. — a decision she would later come to realize may have saved her life.

A referral to urologist Yekutiel Sandman, M.D., resulted in a CT scan of her kidneys and urinary system. Upon initial review of the CT images, radiologist Kirsten Luedemann, M.D., did not see anything abnormal. She thought something other than the urinary system must be the issue and dove deeper, completing a detailed review of the rest of the images captured in the CT scan.

She discovered an abnormally distended appendix which was about to rupture, and knew immediate action was necessary. Within

an hour of the completed CT scan, Dr. Sandman’s medical assistant, Miriam Hernandez, called Jo Ann and insisted she immediately make her way to the Emergency Room for appendicitis.

Jo Ann was reluctant to go because she had no obvious signs or symptoms of appendicitis, but Miriam’s insistence helped get her to Doctors Hospital for an evaluation. She was admitted for observation and the surgeon on call, Eddie Gomez, M.D., was notified. He came immediately for surgical evaluation and scheduled Jo Ann for surgery that night.

Dr. Gomez performed an emergency laparoscopic appendectomy and Jo Ann was discharged the next morning without complication. The pathology report, however, showed a rare cancer of the appendix. If her appendix had ruptured, the cancer could well have spread throughout her body.

Thanks to a proactive team, a medical emergency and life-threatening illness were averted. Jo Ann’s follow-up appointment at Miami Cancer Institute showed that no further treatment was necessary.

In response to her experience, Jo Ann made a planned gift to Baptist Health Foundation in support of Miami Cancer Institute. Now part of the Living Legacy Society and Century Club, this longtime nurse is once again leaving her mark at Baptist Health.

This prestigious honor acknowledged him as the leading force behind Ocean Reef’s commitment to a multiyear campaign to raise money to build a

helipad at Baptist Hospital’s Victor E. Clarke Emergency Center.

Tom’s work serves the mission of Ocean Reef and Baptist Health to maximize the quality and streamline the effectiveness of the healthcare offerings for Ocean Reef residents. Under his visionary leadership, Ocean Reef’s generous donors provided much of the $9 million needed for the new helipad, which began service in October 2020 — a memorable milestone in Baptist Health’s history.

Baptist Hospital of Miami is the 728-bed flagship entity for Baptist Health, built in 1960 and serving the South Florida community since its inception. Over 2,000 physicians practice at Baptist Hospital of Miami, supported by nearly 5,000 staff members focused on fulfilling our vision of being the preeminent healthcare provider in the communities we serve. As Miami continues to grow and patients travel to the hospital from outside the area to be seen by experts from Baptist Health’s numerous Institutes and Programs, the facility is stretched to its limit. Funded in part by philanthropy, the renovation of Baptist Hospital of Miami continues to be an ongoing priority and will help us meet the needs of our patients while also aiding in the recruitment of medical talent. New patient rooms and family areas help improve patient comfort and optimize safety and efficiency of care, while expanded dining and kitchen facilities help keep pace with our growing patient population.

Looking to the Future

Leveraging new and existing technology, Baptist Hospital of Miami is soon embarking on a modernization of the patient experience, implementing cohesive technology that will provide better connections between patients, clinicians and staff. This new project aims to transform patient rooms into “smart rooms,” utilizing an Integrative Patient System (IPS) which will improve the patient experience with enhanced safety, education and care. The initiative will be piloted in 48 rooms on the 4th floor of Baptist Hospital’s Hope Tower and is expected to be rolled out throughout the entire Baptist Health organization.

The challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have demonstrated the need for the renovation of the Bethesda Hospital East Emergency Department.

Private rooms, smart technology and optimized care are essential to our patients’ health and well-being. With a $15 million goal, Bethesda Hospital remains focused on fundraising for this important project. The support of our community and generosity of our donors is vital in helping Bethesda Hospital transform the emergency care facility and increase efficiencies. After a successful 2021, we are more than halfway to our goal, raising a total of $8 million since the campaign’s launch.

Looking to the Future

Patient experience encompasses the range of interactions that patients have with a healthcare system. At Baptist Health, we pride ourselves on ensuring the delivery of compassionate, highquality care and service that exceeds the expectations of our patients and families. At Doctors Hospital, donor support has been vital in enhancing the level of care our patients receive.

From helping to fund the intensive care unit renovation to purchasing new equipment such as the AccuVein vein illuminators, which minimize medical errors and enhance patients’ comfort and safety by enabling clinicians to accurately visualize the veins under the skin, philanthropy greatly impacts Doctors Hospital’s ability to offer high-quality care to our community. Thanks to the dedicated clinical staff who strive for excellence each day and the continued improvements made possible through philanthropic support, Doctors Hospital was named among the Top 5 Hospitals in the Region by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital also earned a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and was recognized with an “A” grade for spring 2021 from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, the only hospital rating system focused exclusively on safety.

Looking to the Future

Thousands of patients come to Doctors Hospital for surgical procedures each year. While our physicians and surgical staff are equipped with the advanced skills and technology required for inpatient and outpatient procedures, the surgical suites are in critical need of renovation and expansion. A planned renovation project will help fulfill our commitment to extraordinary care and increase the hospital’s surgical capacity by offering the latest technological surgical services and equipment in larger, state-of-the-art operating rooms.

FISHERMEN’S COMMUNITY HOSPITAL Fundraising at a Glance

July 1, 2021, marked the official grand opening celebration of the newly rebuilt Fishermen’s Community Hospital in Marathon. The ribbon-cutting event celebrated the culmination of Baptist Health’s commitment to the health and well-being of the Middle Keys, as well as the donors who helped raise more than $16 million to make this possible. With the completion of the new 37,000 sq. ft. facility, Fishermen’s Community Hospital now provides specialized services such as 24/7 emergency care; telestroke services to give stroke patients immediate access to Board-certified neurologists; an on-site helipad; six inpatient beds, including two intensive care beds with 24/7 monitoring; nine emergency department beds; five additional recovery beds; diagnostic imaging; and rehabilitation and laboratory services. In addition, the hospital is now home to the southernmost branch of Baptist Health’s Miami Cancer Institute, providing patients with highquality oncology care close to home.

Looking to the Future

With the newly rebuilt Fishermen’s Community Hospital now open, physician recruitment is a top priority. There is a critical need to increase the availability of, as well as access to, both primary and preventive care services throughout the Keys. For Baptist Health to recruit top physicians to the Middle Keys area, a new medical arts building is essential, as it will provide space to house current and new physician offices. Baptist Health has identified the property adjacent to the new hospital as an ideal location and acquired the land in June 2021. This acquisition will allow us to develop a medical campus where we can meet the full spectrum of the community’s healthcare needs.

HOMESTEAD HOSPITAL Fundraising at a Glance

The Perinatal Department at Homestead Hospital had a busy year caring for 1,092 patients in its Obstetrical Emergency Department triage area, delivering 860 babies and treating 129 babies in its special care nursery. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, upgrades were made for new neonatal IV “smart pumps,” allowing communication from the IV pump to the pharmacy and the hospital’s medical documentation system.

These upgrades ensure that accurate medication orders are given, adding an extra layer of vigilance for patient safety.

Philanthropic funds also enabled the department to purchase two bilirubin bank lights and one bilirubin blanket, which are used for photo therapy for babies suffering from jaundice, a yellow pigment of red blood cells that causes a slight yellowing of the skin. Other purchases made possible through donor support included seven stainless steel delivery room tables for the hospital’s labor and delivery rooms; detailed discharge instruction books for patients; and three new, state-of-the-art vital sign instruments for the mother-baby area.

Homestead Hospital dedicated acres of vacant land adjacent to the hospital for its Grow2Heal Garden.

The garden is a bold, innovative way to respond to the community’s food desert classification, offering a program of preventive health through fresh, nutritious foods.

Through Grow2Heal, the hospital developed a “Grow Your Lunch” program designed for K-12 students, giving them access to fresh produce and teaching them the value of harvesting and preparing wholesome meals that they eat on-site. Homestead Hospital plans to expand the garden, increasing the availability of fresh produce to the hospital’s patients, staff and visitors. This expansion will activate a “Farmacy” — a produce distribution program for patients diagnosed with chronic health conditions associated with living within a food desert, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. These patients are “prescribed” fresh produce from the Grow2Heal Garden, continuing the hospital’s innovative efforts in preventive health through nutrition.

MARINERS HOSPITAL Fundraising at a Glance

Nurses play a crucial role on the front lines of community health, caring for our patients and ensuring their safety and well-being. Last year, Mariners Hospital honored the nursing staff by holding its 17th Annual Mariners Hospital Walk/ Run, benefiting the hospital’s Center for Excellence in Nursing. The Walk/Run was held virtually from November 15-20, giving many in the Keys community and beyond the opportunity to participate and show their support. Philanthropy helps the Center give our nurses the gifts of

education, training, state-of-the-art our patients. The 17th Annual Mariners equipment and technology — vital tools Hospital Walk/Run raised more than they need to offer high-quality care for $44,000.

Looking to the Future

Patients at Mariners Hospital count on dedicated caregivers to deliver compassionate care and service in a safe, respectful environment. They also count on the hospital’s advanced technology and equipment, designed to perform with the highest standards of safety and effectiveness. The hospital is currently in need of a new, stateof-the-art Siemens MRI scanner.

This new technology will allow for improved image quality, more accurate diagnosis and reduced patient anxiety with a larger opening and shorter scan times. Philanthropy will play an important role in making sure Mariners Hospital is equipped with the tools it needs to provide optimum care.

SOUTH MIAMI HOSPITAL Fundraising at a Glance

Bedside transition allows for a mother and newborn baby to remain together immediately after a vaginal delivery. Implementing bedside transition serves many purposes, including no separation upon delivery, greater patient satisfaction, reduced healthcare costs and better outcomes for both mother and baby. Funded entirely by philanthropy, two bedside transition nurses have been hired at South Miami Hospital to lead this initiative. Thanks to donor support, bedside transition is improving maternal newborn bonding — skin-to-skin contact to help maintain temperature and metabolic levels, while also promoting breastfeeding.

Looking to the Future

The Spine Center at Miami Neuroscience Institute, located on the South Miami Hospital campus, is increasing capacity. The expansion will incorporate a holistic model of spine health that involves the comprehensive management of all spine-related disorders using an integrative medical approach, while ensuring a thorough consideration of both nonsurgical and surgical

treatments of pain and neurological symptoms. The future expansion represents just how critical the Spine Center is in our community, bringing together physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists to diagnose and treat the source of a patient’s back, neck or spine pain. Additional space will allow our team of specialists to have an even greater impact on those they serve.

WEST KENDALL BAPTIST HOSPITAL Fundraising at a Glance

In 2021, West Kendall Baptist Hospital marked its 10th anniversary in the West Kendall community. Upon its 2011 opening, the hospital quickly began to see an increase in patient volumes, doubling the number of expected emergency department visits within its first year of opening. The sustained demand for patient beds and emergency services has continued to increase year after year. To meet the growing needs of our community, West Kendall Baptist Hospital will undergo a four-story, 126,000-sq.-ft. clinical expansion, which includes 70 new observation/inpatient beds, 35 new Emergency Department treatment rooms and areas for future imaging and ancillary growth. The expansion continues to be the hospital’s main fundraising focus, with efforts underway to bring in critical philanthropic dollars to support this important project.

Looking to the Future

West Kendall Baptist Hospital was proud to celebrate 10 years of excellence in 2021, but the hospital has its sights set on its future impact in the West Kendall community. With so many of Baptist Health’s Institutes and Programs patients living in west Miami-Dade County, the hospital realized the need to establish representation of each on the campus. The future expansion of our Institutes and Programs will increase awareness of the specialized care of each and create a larger footprint to benefit more patients in our community.

The vision of Baptist Health Innovations is to engineer the future of healthcare by creating a culture of innovation, which will provide physicians and staff with world-class resources to turn great ideas into transformative products and services directed at improving the health and healthcare of our communities. In 2021, philanthropic efforts continued to focus on raising critical funds in support of the Institute’s four pillars: global healthcare design; co-creation/invention; applied research and education supporting invention; and intellectual asset management. Philanthropy has helped support realworld solutions for problems patients and healthcare providers are facing now, enabling Baptist Health to move at the speed of business and create meaningful collaborations to benefit our patients and community.

Donor support has also helped to ensure that transformative ideas are tested, prototyped and provided to patients waiting for new treatments and lifesaving procedures.

Looking to the Future

Challenges are calls to action aimed at accelerating research, development and demonstration in areas that could provide significant benefits to patients and the healthcare sector. Thanks to philanthropic support, Baptist Health Innovations is working to establish an Innovation Challenge in order to pilot a new program within Baptist Health. A survey will be sent to the organization’s clinical leadership to gather information regarding current problems faced by our healthcare workers. Based on the results, the Institute will focus on developing the most innovative ideas to solve these real-world concerns in healthcare delivery and patient experience. It will issue challenges and provide seed funding to develop the best idea and complete a piloted program with Baptist Health and other strategic partners. The Innovation Challenge will serve as an important resource in improving care delivery based on patient-centric problems, impacting patients in South Florida and beyond.

CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF LEARNING Fundraising at a Glance

Baptist Health’s Center for the Advancement of Learning addresses the critical and ongoing nursing shortage through innovative and enriched learning programs.

Offered in Palm Beach, Miami and the Florida Keys, the Nurse Scholars Program and College of Health Sciences educate and prepare nurses to be capable, compassionate caregivers to Baptist Health’s patients and families. Lifelong learning is encouraged and supported through scholarships for advanced degrees to enhance nurses’ knowledge and expertise. These programs further Baptist Health’s mission by attracting, educating and retaining top talent among our nurse caregivers, reducing nurse vacancy and turnover rates and increasing nursing engagement and satisfaction.

Baptist Health admits over 200 nurse scholars each year, but with the support of philanthropy, these programs will offer these opportunities for a greater number of qualified individuals, helping meet the growing need for nurses.

Looking to the Future

The Center for the Advancement of Learning’s vision is to develop a multidisciplinary education hub on the campus of Baptist Hospital to support medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied health education programs. This academic destination will include multipurpose classrooms, a surgical skills lab, state-of-the-art simulation training, auditoriums with international telecasting capability and much more. A high-tech educational facility with a focus on nextgeneration simulation-based learning will provide the Center with critical space needed to support more than 9,000 students, residents and fellows each year.

The arts — music, visual, literary and dance — play an integral role in healing and promoting the well-being of patients, caregivers and staff in healthcare settings. Whether one engages actively or passively with the arts, research has shown that these artistic interventions can improve health outcomes by reducing pain and anxiety, supporting caregiver wellness and transforming the patient experience. Funded by philanthropy, Miami Cancer Institute’s Arts in Medicine program is composed of professional musicians, singers, visual artists and literary artists. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, seven artists are making a difference at the Institute, encouraging creative expression to reduce stress and improving patients’ quality of life.

Looking to the Future

Philanthropic support for the pediatric radiation oncology program at Miami Cancer Institute has the distinct opportunity to change the lives of children far beyond the geographic boundaries of South Florida. Matthew Hall, M.D., lead pediatric radiation oncologist and director of the Live Like Bella® Pediatric Radiation Oncology Program at the Institute, is the principal investigator of numerous cooperative group trials and investigator-initiated trials at the Institute. Donor support will provide the funding needed to launch these exciting clinical trials, which will help improve the lives of pediatric patients. Philanthropy will also play a vital role in supporting the basic science and translational studies needed so that the clinical trials can get underway.

Springboard Academy is a subscriptionbased online portal with two unique clinical learning pathways: cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology. The platform is web-based, mobile-friendly and operates much like an online university environment, with traceable modules offering structured learning and reinforcement. Funded in part by philanthropy, Springboard Academy has allowed Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute to invest in its people, create a gold standard for training and competency, assist with performance improvement, develop a culture of innovation and, most importantly, retain and attract highquality invasive services staff. Training all

registered nurses and cardiovascular technologists the same way will help maintain a high standard of excellence across the board at the Institute. Thanks to the philanthropic support which helped launch this new initiative, staff will remain up to date with the latest technology and innovation, guidelines and evidence-based care, as the Springboard Academy platform is continuously updated with new information from professional societies and organizations.

Looking to the Future

Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute has always recognized that the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac and vascular conditions can take a tremendous toll on the physical and emotional wellbeing of patients and their caregivers, and that taking care of the “whole patient” is therefore a key component of providing patient-centric care. Targeted investments in vital nonclinical programs will enable the Institute to continue to lead the way in addressing the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs of our patients and their families, thereby optimizing health outcomes. Through philanthropy, the Institute plans to expand patient support by implementing cardiology patient navigators to better streamline care delivery, eliminate barriers to care and improve the overall patient experience. Patient navigators will also establish remote at-home monitoring to observe the physiological status of patients at high risk for admission or worsening cardiac outcomes.

MIAMI NEUROSCIENCE INSTITUTE Fundraising at a Glance

Miami Neuroscience Institute is the most recent Institute to emerge at Baptist Health. Comprehensive funding is vital to help advance and expand the range of technology available at the Institute, and therefore remains at the forefront of philanthropic efforts. Telestroke carts, for example, are state-of-the-art solutions that allow us to communicate effectively via telemedicine and remote access for timely treatment of stroke patients across Baptist Health. Support for the technology behind Miami Neuroscience Institute’s stroke program helps reduce time to treatment, regardless of the patient’s geographic location.

Looking to the Future

In conjunction with Baptist Health Foundation, Miami Neuroscience Institute will soon launch its new Neuroscience Research Scholars program for current and recently graduated undergraduate students, first- or second-year graduate students and first- or second-year medical students. Three scholars will be selected for the 12-week program, which will take place each summer. The program offers the scholars the opportunity to engage with the Institute to conduct clinical

research and review past and current clinical efforts to analyze results and suggest improvements in clinical practice, where necessary, in a variety of subspecialty disciplines. Scholars will be matched with research mentors within their area of interest and will be required to participate in an existing study. In addition to hands-on clinical research experience, the scholars will be required to participate in weekly educational workshops on various research topics, providing a complete and immersive learning experience.

MIAMI ORTHOPEDICS & SPORTS MEDICINE INSTITUTE Fundraising at a Glance

OBERD is the leading patient intelligence platform that captures and measures patient-reported outcomes across every touchpoint, providing the best feedback. Funded by the generosity of Al and Jane Nahmad, OBERD has been up and running at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute for more than one year and has had more than 6,800 patients and 20 physicians enrolled with the platform. Thanks to the high number of patients participating and the engagement of the Institute’s physicians, OBERD has been instrumental in making important modifications.

These include adjustments pertaining to pre-operation compliance, iPad integration, automatic and manual patient reminders and the implementation of new surgical coordinator guidelines and questionnaires at patient visits. Thanks to donor support, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute has collected data and recorded outcome measures for 114 procedure types.

Looking to the Future

In July 2021, Baptist Health and the Miami Dolphins unveiled the brand-new Baptist Health Training Complex at Hard Rock Stadium. The 217,200-square-foot complex includes an outdoor practice area with two full natural grass fields and a full indoor practice facility, a two-story weight room with a cardio deck, locker rooms, a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy area, dedicated recovery area including cryotherapy and isolation tanks, an athletic training room with expansive rehabilitation space and much more. However, what’s still

to come from this exciting new facility is the access the community will soon have to Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute services. Beginning in 2022, local residents can head to the new training complex for outpost diagnostics, clinical appointments, physical therapy and rehabilitation services. Offering this access to the Miami Gardens area will surely have an impact on the Institute’s ability to expand its reach and deliver high-quality care to even more members of our community.
