With more than 200 delegates from the hospitality sector in attendance, the first ever Haute Grandeur Global Hotel Awards gala ceremony took place in October in Abu Dhabi.



owards the end of 2016, BESPOKE had the honour of sponsoring the inaugural Haute Grandeur Awards, an innovative new platform for recognising outstanding hotels worldwide. Orchestrated by Marinique de Wet, formerly one of the key figures behind the World Luxury Hotel Awards, Haute Grandeur’s originality lies in its rating system, which aggregates reviews from TripAdvisor, Facebook, Booking.com, Hotels.com, Expedia, Agoda, Google+, Yelp, Laterooms.com, Orbitz, HolidayCheck, 4travel.jp, Tablethotels, Hotelchatter, Priceline.com and AsiaRooms. By relying on such data, generated by real paying customers, de Wet believes she has created the most unbiased and independent rating system around.

In attendance at the black-tie event in Abu Dhabi was Nicolas Shammas, BESPOKE’s Editor-in-Chief. “Given that the global luxury consumer has never had such a wide variety of choices in terms of products and places, the question is how can you rise above the competition?” he remarked from the podium to present the award to the overall winner. “We, at BESPOKE, believe the answer to that question is actually quite simple, and it is passion. For if you are truly passionate about what you do, and if you can inspire those around you to be like you, then the consumer will invariably reciprocate in kind.”

Winner of the Haute Grandeur Hotel Award Sitting at the southern tip of Indonesia’ capital, in an area comprising luxury hotels, malls and skyscrapers, the Raffles Jakarta can be found sandwiched between the upscale Lotte Shopping Avenue plaza and the Ciputra Artpreneur Centre, an art gallery and theatre complex that fronts some of the best culture the country has to offer. Entering via the expansive marbled lobby, you realise that local culture, in the form of contemporary art, plays a key role here too. Though the splendid rooms (featuring floor-to-ceiling windows), memorable food and top-notch service are all impressive, it’s on the 14th floor where this business hotel is most compelling. For it’s here you’ll find the indoor and outdoor pools, lush terrace, kids club, gym and superb spa.

Raffles Jakarta (Indonesia)

Best Family Resort Lake Kora was once owned by the Vanderbilts but it’s now available for exclusive hire, for families or groups of friends. Located in upstate New York, around a five hour drive from NYC, it is set on a 400-hectare estate. Fully staffed with a gourmet chef, general manager, housekeepers, and outdoor instructors, this allinclusive rustic paradise features 19 exquisite guest rooms (spread among eight log cottages near the lake’s edge), a heritage bowling alley, tennis and squash courts, vintage board games, billiards, an outdoor roller rink, lake activities, sailing boats, canoes, motorboats and balsam trails. In short, this property is a magnificent playground for adults and children alike.

escape | ultimate hotels 105 Best Beach Resort Staking a claim as the finest resort in the Maldives, LVMH’s Cheval Blanc resort at Randheli can be found among the white sands and turquoise waters of the northwestern Noonu Atoll. In all, there are 45 supremely elegant and incredibly spacious one- and two-bedroom villas. Each comes with seven-metre high ceilings, indoor and outdoor relaxation areas, private access to the powder sand beaches, as well as its own 12.5-m-long swimming pool connected to a lagoon-side pontoon, perfect for discrete skinny-dipping. There’s plenty to do by way of watersports, tennis courts, indoor virtual golf, a gorgeous Guerlain spa island, and various restaurant offerings but most guests are so happy in their secluded sanctuaries, they rarely venture out.

Cheval Blanc Randheli (Maldives) Best Spa Retreat Laucala Island is a 1,400-hectare, almost totally self-sufficient, paradise in northern Fiji, which once belonged to the Forbes family and is now owned by the billionaire owner of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz. Of course, he appropriates it for himself some of the time, but rather than let staff (including a GM, who’s the former Managing Director of Amanresorts) get bored when he’s not there, he decided to share it with others too. There are 25 thatched-roof villas, an 18-hole golf course, an equestrian centre, five restaurants, a fleet of 14 boats to explore the reef, and a vast man-made lagoon of terraced pools complemented by a 25-metre-long glass-cube lap pool, and a spare-no-expense hilltop spa.

Laucala Island (Fiji) Best Desert Resort A couple of hours from Abu Dhabi and close to the Saudi border, you’ll find the epicentre of the Empty Quarter, as well as the Qasr Al Sarab, a 5 billion USD resort managed by Anantara, which emerges, mirage-like, amid the towering dunes. Resembling an old fortress marrying Islamic design with modern touches, the hotel offers 206 large rooms, camel trekking, desert walks, outdoor yoga, fat biking, sand boarding and dune bashing on the property, as well as archery.

The spa combines mainstream techniques with local ingredients such as ground dates and sand for exfoliation. Even the culinary experience has been localised with offerings like maq’louba, machbous and camel milk available for a private dinner in the desert during cooler months.

Anantara Qasr Al Sarab (Abu Dhabi) Best Design Hotel Built from sustainable material and powered by hot water from a geothermal source, the ION Luxury Adventure Hotel in Selfoss, Iceland, offers a truly unique experience just an hour’s drive fom Reykjavík. The location is ideal for watching the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), and while the hotel’s 45 minimalistically stylish rooms aren’t all that spacious, they do incentivise you to explore the surrounding lava rocks, waterfalls and natural hot springs.

There’s hiking, horseback riding, fishing and even a Unesco World Heritage Site close by. But if you want to kick back, try the hotel’s Lava Spa, with its 10-metre hot pool and glass-fronted sauna from which to admire the extraordinary views.

In 2008, five new bungalows were built. The 230 m² Esmeralda bungalow has a double bathroom with spa, a chronotherapy bathtub, a sauna with sea view and an outdoor area with a deck and a heated swimming pool. Extra touches include 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and wine cellar. Known as the most exclusive bungalow in Ponta dos Ganchos, the Especial Esmeralda offers the guest an incredible experience without ever leaving the bungalow. It has its own gym on the lower floor and a swimming pool with ten meters. With approximately

310 m², bedroom and living room fully integrated and separated from the outside area by an extensive glass door, which allows a perfect natural light and enjoy a breathtaking view without leaving the bed or the cozy sofa. There is also has a sauna with sea view and a spa bath with massage tatamis and whirlpool also overlooking the sea.

These newer bungalows have been built in a sustainable way, with cross ventilation, solar panel, green roof and reforestation wood. Care for the environment is part of the essence of Ponta dos Ganchos, which in addition to sewage treatment, captures rainwater to be used in gardening and recycles 100% of the waste. The organic waste goes through a composting process and then is used as fertilizer in the hotel organic garden.

Ponta dos Ganchos offers a beach, gym, cinema, business center, restaurant, bar, lounge, games room, tennis court, heated pool, massage tents, SPA and ecological trails. Close to the resort is the best dive site in southern Brazil, the island of Arvoredo, as well as excellent places for boat trips, such as the island of Anhatomirim and the Bay of Dolphins.

In addition to a paradisiacal setting, all the charm of the bungalows and the care for the environment, Ponta dos Ganchos Exclusive Resort has its own private island.

During the day, you can enjoy the island to rest, read or even enjoy the scenery in the lounge under the gazebo. At night, the island is the setting for a special evening. An experience for one couple only each night.
