The original, transparent and unbiased Haute Grandeur Awards just wrapped up in Thailand and, as one of its founding sponsors, we wanted to shed some light on a few of our favourite winners.

W

ith 105 delegates attending the black-tie event at the Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit in Thailand last October, the 2017 instalment of the Haute Grandeur Awards demonstrated increasing ambition for the platform, not just because 522 prizes were presented but because the organisers thought fit to expand the scope this time around with a second category for spas, and even a third for restaurants – due to kick off in 2018.

pioneered this uniquely unprejudiced system, which relies exclusively on the feedback of paying customers, rather than a quantity of votes by the general public or judges.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the overall winner – the Rosewood Beijing, which de Wet described as “deserving of this coveted award in every way, as it is an exquisite establishment, renowned for its passion and commitment to impeccable service, and this was demonstrated by the high customer rating score it received this year.”

Best General Manager Located in Midtown, two blocks from Central Park and a short walk to Times Square, the Park Hyatt in New York opened in 2014, occupying the lower quarter of a handsome new 90-storey skyscraper. We could mention its stylish and particularly large rooms (of which there are 210), or its amazing indoor 20-metre swimming pool (from where you can enjoy some bird’s eye views over Carnegie Hall while you take in the sound of classical music being transmitted via underwater speakers) but what really sets this property apart is its service. Credit of course goes to the General Manager, Peter Roth, and his iPad-wielding, Narciso Rodriguez-wearing team, who clearly take the personal approach to the nth degree.

Park Hyatt New York (USA) Best Medical Spa Overlooking the shores of Lake Geneva in the mountain town of Montreux, the pioneering medical retreat of Clinique La Prairie has been around since 1931 and in that time it has welcomed luminaries such as Churchill, Thatcher, Bowie, a Rolling Stone, a couple of Popes and many a sports star looking to harvest the benefits of its unorthodox cellular rejuvenation techniques.

And though the science of cell therapy remains its best known practice, this luxurious state-of-the-art medi-spa is also specialised in everything from cardiology and neurology, to cosmetic surgery, via countless holistic wellness treatments. Okay so it doesn’t come cheap, but the best things in life rarely do.

escape | ultimate hotels 109 Best Spa Hotel When Adrian Zecha created the Amanpuri in 1988, not only was a new laid-back ultra-luxury hotel concept born but a new race of travellers too: Amanjunkies – fiercely loyal customers, who craved a piece of the peace (Aman is Sanskrit for peace). And though this group has an ever-growing roster of destinations (32 so far), each characterised by exclusivity and minimalist architecture designed to complement the resort’s natural and cultural setting, the Amanpuri remains one of its best properties thanks in no small part to the staff who literally bow to you every time they see you, a near telepathic level of service, an extraordinary spa.

Best Family Hotel Built just outside of Türkbükü along a verdant slope edging Bodrum’s Paradise Bay, this 60-hectare property was designed by Antonio Citterio as a stunning all-in-one resort you’d never need leave.

Almost all the 86 rooms and 23 apartments boast seaviews and among the resort’s many amenities are two private beaches, a 3,000 sqm spa, 10 restaurants and an array of amusements for kids including a children’s pool with some great play-equipment next to it, a supervised play-room for toddlers, a games room for older kids, and of course baby-sitting services for when Mummy and Daddy want to go downstairs and try the Mandarin’s waterfront JuJu Bar, one of the Turkish Riviera’s hottest night spots.

Mandarin Oriental Bodrum (Turkey) Best Pool Villa Resort Bali’s One Eleven is not your usual Indonesian resort. It comprises just nine one-bedroom villas, no kids are allowed, there’s no physical spa, and meals are exclusively prepared and served within your own premises (so too are the massages by the way). By breaking the rule book, One Eleven’s going for an original take on intimacy and exclusivity: each villa comes with a 14-metre pool and 350 sqm of very open space (only the bedroom and en-suite bathroom come with windows, curtains and air-conditioning). Privacy is guaranteed though, and should you ever venture out from your sanctuary, you’ll find it to be close enough to the action of Seminyak, but far enough that shoppers and partgoers won’t be an annoyance.

One Eleven Bali (Indonesia) Haute Grandeur Award Opened in October 2014, this Beijing property was the Rosewood’s first in Asia, and the start of a four-project roll-out in mainland China.

It offers 283 spacious rooms (that are among the city’s largest), opulent interiors that mix modern international design with traditional Chinese references, and a Central Business District location. Some of the most memorable aspects for us were its eager-to-please staff (who are stunningly dressed in designer uniforms by Mushi’s Caroline Deleens), the fact it’s as popular with well-to-do Chinese guests as Westerners, and its array of restaurants and bars including a northern Chinese joint called Country Kitchen that serves the most mouthwateringly scrumptious Peking Duck.

Dubai’s Crazy New Floating Underwater Resort Will Be Inspired by Venice UAE | MIddle East | www.thefloatingvenice.com Dubai — already home to the world’s biggest indoor theme park and on the way to opening the world’s longest zip line — is getting another jaw-dropping attraction: an underwater luxury vessel resort.

Opening in 2020, The Floating Venice will offer an “authentic Venetian experience” in the Middle East. The floating resort — that’s technically classified as a boat — will have an underwater deck with accommodations as well as restaurants, bars, and shops.

Above the sea, the Italian-inspired design includes rising domes that resemble structures like the Basilica San Marco, as well as gondolas, glass-bottom (well, acrylic-bottom) pools, and 12 floating beaches.

Below, there will be underwater restaurants, bars, and a spa. And beyond the deck there will be more than 400,000 square feet of coral reef and will have an on-site coral nursery to assist in maintaining a thriving marine life in the area.

The Floating Venice will be located in Dubai’s The World islands, which guests can get to by boat, seaplane, or helicopter.

The resort, which claims to be the “first luxury underwater vessel resort,” joins the likes of Poseidon Undersea Resort, the world’s first sea floor resort, in Fiji, and Atlantis The Palm, which has two underwater rooms built into the hotel, also in Dubai.

These luxury experiences add new meaning to the word “getaway.”

The new hotel, Vienna House Mokotów Warsaw, is being positioned as a casual four-star superior business hotel with a combination of industrial design, modern, green guesthouse culture and a culinary journey of discovery that is based on sustainability values. Warsaw has experienced significant growth in the last ten years and has become a globally leading destination with a focus on culture, politics and business. The district of Mokotów, located near Warsaw’s Chopin international airport, has developed from an industrial area into a booming business district.

“Opening a hotel in Warsaw was a natural step for us.

“We have been managing hotels in Poland very successfully for many years, including a resort and several business and city hotels,” explained Rupert Simoner, chief executive, Vienna House.

“The new Vienna House brand hotel confirms our growth strategy as well as our commitment to the Polish market. “And I am sure that one or more hotels will follow,” Simoner added. The owner of the new hotel is private equity fund Garvest based in Polish Poznań.

Vienna House Mokotów Warsaw will be managed under a lease agreement.

The investment volume amounts to about €22 million.

The leitmotif of the new Vienna House will touch on the industrial past of the location and the zeitgeist of the booming district.

This will be reflected in the visual concept, based on a design by Polish architectural firm Jems Architekci. The focus of all activity will be the hotel lobby, which will fulfil the wishes of the modern, cosmopolitan guest. Thanks to tables and chairs that can be easily grouped into new arrangements, the cosy lobby will present itself with a new look every day so that guests are constantly discovering different perspectives and possibilities. Gone is the classic reception.

The huge spa will feature 15 single treatment rooms and two VIP suites.

Set to open in early 2018, the huge spa will feature 15 single treatment rooms, two VIP suites, four double rooms and seven ‘scrub rooms’ – which include two hammams, one each for males and females.

As well as the extensive treatment areas, there will also be a large wet area with saunas and a swimming pool, as well as a yoga zone and a health club.

Separate manicure and pedicure areas will also be available, as will a hair salon.

All treatments at the spa – which has been designed by Alexandre Pierart from APS.A Suprem architects – will be provided by Cinq Mondes.

Carole Wininger, global hospitality director at Cinq Mondes, said: “Kempinski Dubai will be join the growing portfolio of Cinq Mondes spa and wellness retreats, which are more than just spas, providing healing and prevention.

As part of Cinq Mondes’ holistic approach to wellness, the spa at Kempinski will also offer nutritional advice, promote restored sleep and provide yoga and Qi Gong classes in order for guests to “reconnect to themselves and to be reborn to the world”.

Marriott Hotels has opened one of the largest spa hotels in Poland, located in the seaside resort town of Sopot on the “Polish riviera”.

The Sopot Marriott Resort & Spa houses 35 treatment rooms and four swimming pools – including an outdoor rooftop infinity pool.

The expansive spa will focus on two main wellness strands – stress management and deep relaxation; as well as anti-ageing and purifying treatments.

Treatments range from body scrubs, body wraps, facials and massages to “therapy baths”.

Children’s services will also be available at the spa, as the 145-bedroom resort will target the family market – due to its location in a high tourism area.
